Charcoal is very different than coal dust. During WWII, many gassers
were converted to woodgas. Most of the farm tractors ran on woodgas.
This is gasification of wood. It is done on a burner attached to the
vehicle. The gas is produced by burning the wood in a oxygen lean
environment. There is a nice example in the Deutschesmuseum in
Munich.

Mountains of coal dust have been buried (or not) in the USA. A few
years ago I saw a number of how much fuel that represented. It is a
staggering amount of Billions of BTUs. THe problem is that coal
dust oxidizes when exposed to air, and oxidation is just a slow
process with results similar to burning. The oxidation makes the
stored coal dust much less valuable as fuel, thus impractical.

Subjecting any car to that over years will rust it away. While the

provide many years of service on that road before the perches rust
away. Then they can be repaired, and the car will provide more

Aside from some light bubbles at a corner of the sunroof, mine is rust free

Make sure the transmission doesn't do anything odd. Most electronic problems
with trans can be fixed with a $200 conductor plate and $100 worth of ATF.
Probably a $700 job at the dealer.

It's got a pop up sunroof, does the roof retract smoothly, and pop up too?

Do the displays for climate control and radio work? Mine have a lot of dead LCD
segments.

As with any ACC car, make sure the climate control functions as intended.

How old are the accumulators in the rear suspension?

Pay attention to any warnings from the instrument cluster.

When do they say it was last serviced?
When does the dash display say it needs another service?

Like Jim said, the air/fuel mixture has to be just right or it won't
ignite. Learned that building propane fired potato launchers years ago.
Acetylene males much better cannon fuel.

Piffle, this stuff isn't gasoline. Or acetylene. Propane only
ignites at a rather narrow range of mixtures with air, and this
 is easy to avoid.

Open a window. Done, no problem. If in the trunk, wedge it open

Nope. My '76 300D (617.910) has a manual adjustment knob on the injection pump.
Four settings based on altitude. The ADA was introduced with the 617.912 in the
W123.

Either way, aside from reducing smoke the adjustment/ADA cannot make up for the
lowered oxygen density at higher alts.

NA engines lose 4% of power for every 1000 ft above sea. In Fort Collins
you'd be down 20%. Turbo/super charged engines aren't affected as much -
maybe 10% total loss even at 10,000 ft.

[MBZ] W210 tires

2013-01-06 Thread Mitch Haley
The G-MAX and the Ecsta 4x were tied for 3rd place when I bought tires back in
October, looks like the 4x has slipped several places in the survey since the

I usually try to buy tires that rank green (6.6 out of 10) across the board in

I agree with Mr Bruckmann on this. I drove my NA 200D from sealevel
to 4000 ft frequently with little problem. Every time I drove a NA
Diesel MB into higher altitudes, the performance was bad and so was
the smoke. even at 7000 ft, the NA (non ADA) diesels were bad. If
I could not find or justify a turboDiesel MB, I'd go for a VW
turbodiesel. I crossed the CD with my turboDiesel Quantum and it
performed pretty well .

Its a 24v 1/2 drive impact wrench up to 250 lb/ft. You can vary the torque by
watching how much it spins and releasing the trigger.

Most pneumatic guns (maybe just better pneumatic guns?) have a torque limiting
control, usually on the back.

For my uses this little electric gun is plenty, it'll take off lug nuts that
were properly torqued but not those that are gorilla torqued which is why I
have tires put on rims and put the rims on myself.

The new version of Dragon Naturally Speaking is very good. It should do
the trick.

But remember it has to be trained to the users speech habits.
You can find deals on it with a Headset and lately they have been throwing

[MBZ] OT a little light reading on injection

2013-01-06 Thread Jerry Herrman
In Hendrik's submission (Mercedes Digest, Vol 86, Issue 33, Message: 2), he
attached a link to a report by Frank DeLuca entitled History of Fuel
Injection. In the article he mentioned that Rudolph Diesel wanted to use
leftover piles of coal dust as fuel. I asked about the origin and eventual
disposition of this material.
Craig responded with the questions Which countryside? When?
The first sentence in the report states When Rudolph Diesel contracted with
Augsburg and Krupp of Germany in 1893 to develop a more efficient internal
combustion engine, one of his objectives was to use a s fuel the mountainous
piles of powdered coal which had been accumulating throughout the countryside.
I presume this means in pre-WWI Germany.

Now. I just created something else I'm curious about. As I typed this out, I
copied and pasted, which caused my page to have several sizes of print. I am
wondering if, when it get appears in the forum, the print size will be uniform,
or if it will print with various sizes. If the latter, I apologize in advance
for the difficult-to-read text.

[MBZ] Magnetic Tools

2013-01-06 Thread Larry T
Some of my tools have magnetic areas to use for holding stuff,
etc. Unfortunately, the magnetic end up picking up every bit of
metallic fuzz they get close to - drilling shavings, grinding filings,
and on and on all seem to end up on the metallic helpers.

Is there a easy (semi-easy) way to get the metallic lint off? I've tried
using paper towels, rags, etc and it ends up being a exercise in
frustration.

I wouldn't be so quick to ditch the self leveling Xenon's. New OE is
around $800-$900?, but it should be possible to pick up a used assembly
for less then half that.

The WIS has instructions for adding some factory optional equipment to
various models from the mid 80's on. ESP Xenons are a no-go on the
W210 due to the wiring electronics involved, but heated seats,
headlight washers ortho muti-contour seats are possible to add to a
car without. I thought that was pretty cool!

Yes, that's correct. Only with the headlights or parking lights on the
washer activated do the headlight wipers work.

For awhile (starting with the W210), the high pressure headlight washers
were switch activated, but recently are set at a fixed interval (i.e.
every 10 washer activations).

What David said - I don't recall the '70 220D having the altitude
adjustment, and thought it was to cool deal when I got the '76 300D. The
'81 240D had the ADA - auto adjustment.

Nope. My '76 300D (617.910) has a manual adjustment knob on the injection

Either way, aside from reducing smoke the adjustment/ADA cannot make up
for the lowered oxygen density at higher alts.

The earlier W115s have vacuum governors -- if you don't floor the
pedal, it will regulate for proper fuel for altitude. However, full

I don't know what arrangement the '72 220D/8 had, but one had to pay
attention to throttle position to maintain the proper position for
maximum power, which was a little before the exhaust smoke increased.
The position changed with rpm, so one had to be aware of how the car
was operating.

However, full throttle overrides the governor.

It does lay a pretty good smoke screen!

..That brings to mind a question: when are the headlight washers on a

The old way was, the head or parking lights must be on and when the
windshield washer is activated, the headlight washers give two swipes and two
squirts. That uses a lot of fluid so the newer cars like mine only squirt the
headlights (no wipers anymore) every tenth time the windshield washer is used.
