Chrysler had a push button transmission back in the late 50's or early 60's
didn't they? - nothing new there.

Way to GO, Curt!

I had one of those on a rental car, fortunately there was an LED
screen in the dash prompting me with the foot on the brake thing...

Which reminds me, the other day after work my 240D wouldn't start,
it acted kind of crazy, I pushed my glow plug button and heard the
relay clunk, then shudder on and off, turned the key and nothing. I
jumped out and opened the hood. The car parked in front of me was a
late model Golf TDI, the owner said "You okay?" I replied "dunno
yet." he came over and shook his head obviously out of his league.

Acting on a hunch I retrieved the adjustable wrench from the console
and pulled the ground cable. The guy said "I've got this guy you
could call if you need, he's real good" the guy pulls out his phone
and starts looking for the number, I spun the ground cable back and
forth a couple times on the battery post, tightened it down, jumped
back in the car and hit the button, the relay clicked and held 10
seconds later the car was running. I jumped out and closed the hood.
"Hey thanks for checking on me."

Jumped back in the car, the dude scratched his head as I drove off...

Another reason I love 240Ds (of any stripe), 123s, 124s and 126s.
'specially the Diesels!

No dopey toadas for me please!

I had a rental a couple of years ago that had the silly "Start"
button and no ignition. As long as the fob was close enough the car
would start (it was in my pocket.)

I could never shake the need to reach up to the dash with the key
and try to put it into an ignition. Really disturbing.

The turkey baster does work over time. Without solvent or flush I'd expect
any new fluid to turn dark pretty quick. Once you do it a few times you'd
be able to see the filter at the bottom of the reservoir for quite a while.
The new fluid will end up cleaning stuff up or mixing with fluid you never
really got out earlier.

Re: [MBZ] Power Steering/Steering Gearbox Question

2013-03-13 Thread Dan Penoff
The return line on the W140 is pretty tough to get to, nothing like earlier
models where it's right out there with a hose clamp on it. I don't have any
Stoddard solvent, but I do have two liters of MB PS fluid, so I have plenty to
flush.

I'm not keen about the turkey baster/suck the reservoir dry/refill/repeat
approach, as I think it's horribly inefficient and won't get all of the old
fluid out. I would be a lot more comfortable with a drain and refill at least.

I have some things to take care of in the morning, then I'll get it up on jack
stands and have a closer look. If I can remove the centering bolt and use that
to drain the system I would be happy with that

Thanks,

Dan

When I used to be a corporate "troubleshooter" I can't count the number of
times I had to tell people that "Don't worry, we've all done it ourselves.
Your only mistake was having someone catch you when it happened"

Thank goodness it was something simple. I had no idea the W140 chassis lock
system was so different from earlier models. At least now I know.

I also took the opportunity to hit the lock cylinder with a little bit of
graphite while I was there.

Re: [MBZ] Power Steering/Steering Gearbox Question

2013-03-13 Thread Max Dillon
There is no drain bolt, but...

The hole for the locking bolt (locks the steering gear in center position) is
what I use. FSM should describe that job and show the bolt. It is either 13
or 14mm. Once you get it out, if the steering is pointed straight ahead, you
will see a detent in the hole where the tip of the locking bolt engages.

In order to get the fluid to drain, you must turn the steering off center to
move the internals so they don't block the whole.

Just got out of the shower after doing the motor mounts. Good news!

Despite this job being described as nightmarish in just about every
reference I have found, it only took me three hours from start to finish.

The passenger side was the worst, amazingly, as getting the top bolt
broken loose was a real trick. There isn't enough room to get on it from
above the engine, so you have to work from below, which is tough with all
the stuff that's down there. By using a couple of long 1/2" ratchet
extensions and using a part of the frame as a fulcrum, I finally broke the
top bolt loose. Oy.

Surprisingly, the driver's side mount was easier! Once I got the lower
bolts out, I raised the engine, which gave me room to get on the top bolt
from above using a combination wrench. Figuring I would have to find
something to lever the wrench in order to apply enough torque to break the
bolt loose, I first tried using my hand. Pop! Darned thing came loose.
Woo-hoo!

As an aside for anyone contemplating this job, there is a special wrench
for removing and installing the top mount bolts that can be had for around
$20. While I considered buying one, I figured I would try it first
without and then get one if I was unsuccessful. Knowing what I do now, I
would still suggest that someone thinking about doing this job drop the
$20 and go with the wrench. It would make breaking loose and tightening
the top mount bolts far easier, and save a lot of time.

The driver's side is really tight with hoses and wiring harnesses in the
area, so I was concerned about how I would get the mount out and the new
one in. With the engine jacked up as high as it would go, I was able to
raise the mount, turn it sideways, and lower it out from underneath. New
one went in the same way, only in reverse.

Getting the top bolt started on the driver's side mount was a challenge
and time consuming - it would have been a lot easier with a helper. I
finally got it started by working from underneath. Amazing he sorts of
gyrations one has to accomplish to do things like this.

Everything lined up well underneath after lowering the engine, and only
required a little bit of "tweaking" with a long screwdrivers to get the
lower bolt holes lined up.

With the mounts tightened up, I put the fan shroud back on along with the
air cleaner assembly and I was done. I must have been living right today.
I'll be going out later and will report on the difference while driving
after that. I had my local dealer order a transmission mount for me,
which will be relegated to two weekends from now for installation. Based
on the condition of the motor mounts, I feel confident that the
transmission mount is due as well.

Next up - power steering flush and fill.

I rented it from these folks:

I think the rental was $60 and shipping both ways about $30. They were
very responsive to my questions and also made it clear that if the smoke
smell wasn't gone from my vehicle before the end of the rental period that
if I contacted them I could keep the unit longer at no additional charge.

I don't think my situation was as bad as Rusty's, as his car had a

noticeable when you first got in it and went away after a minute or two.

I just had the ozone generator running for about 4 hours, and so far I
can't smell anything. My nose is pretty lousy from years around chemicals
and industrial engines, so I'll have the spouse check it out when she gets
home. If she can't smell it I'm satisfied. I'll still run it all night
just for the heck of it. Can't hurt.

Just got out of the shower after doing the motor mounts. Good news!

Despite this job being described as nightmarish in just about every reference I
have found, it only took me three hours from start to finish.

The passenger side was the worst, amazingly, as getting the top bolt broken
loose was a real trick. There isn't enough room to get on it from above the
engine, so you have to work from below, which is tough with all the stuff
that's down there. By using a couple of long 1/2" ratchet extensions and using

Probably not, as the W140 uses the electronics to determine when to turn on the

Royal Purple makes Purple Ice. They are much the same as RedLine, a
manufacturer of high end specialty fluids. You can find a lot of their stuff at
FLAPS.

I understand the slightly lowered boiling point, but heat transfer is slightly
better with water and an additive than with higher concentrations of coolant.
And yes, I don't plan on being in freezing temperatures, so the concentration
shouldn't be an issue.

I'll drop you a private note about the parts. Thanks!

Re: [MBZ] Snook Car Saga begins again

2013-03-13 Thread Gerry Archer
Clay makes a good point. The intervertebral discs are like little bags of
semi-soft material that can flow. A whiplash can cause damage to one or
more cervical discs that cause no immediate symptoms and are not visible on
xray, catscans, etc. Gradually or fairly quickly this soft material can
protrude, the disc can partially collapse, and pressure on nerves or the
spinal cord can be the result. For that reason it's always good to claim
pain from whiplash and to be evaluated by a physician if that's what the
insurance company wants. A medical exam can be a baseline if later problems
arise. There should be plenty of legal data/cases addressing this problem.

Being a tort lawyer, Donald must certainly have claimed whiplash since
that's the only way anyone can get fair treatment from present day

Other than that, I have not found anything awful about these cars. The

HA! I wish that were true. Fortunately, I was not hurt. My neck was a
little sore for a couple of days, but I took some ibuprofen and its fine. It
will be one week tomorrow, and I am fine. Plus, in Kansas, there is a

[MBZ] OT - how fast children grow up

2013-03-13 Thread Randy Bennell

Just commenting on some issues raised in other threads -

I have been copying old home movies made with a video camera and copied
onto VHS tapes, onto DVD's in an effort to save them for the future.
I have been working on tapes made starting in 1992 and am up to
Christmas 1995.
My boys were born in 1984 and 1988 so I started out 20 years back when
Tom was not quite 4 and Geoff was not yet 8. There are major changes in
the time from 1992 to 1995. It is truly amazing to watch them change in
a matter of minutes. We fail to note a lot of the changes on a day to
day basis but watching the old tapes brings it all home. The younger one
especially changed a lot in the 3 years or so between ages 3 and 7. The
elder one, not quite so much but he was always quieter anyway.
The video quality is not so great but it is still nice to have these
memories preserved.
Unfortunately, I am convinced that there was an earlier tape but have
not been able to find it. I don't recall exactly when we got the first
video camera but I specifically recall one incident with my younger son
and am sure it was on tape as both my wife and I recall it and I am sure
I remember watching it on the tape.
If I never find it, it will not matter but it annoys me that I think it
should exist but cannot find it.
We have had 3 video cameras now - all Canon. The new one is so much
better that it is hard to believe how technology has changed in 20 years.
Unfortunately, we also did not use the cameras often enough. I tend to
have tape of Christmas and birthdays, and maybe Halloween but not much
else. Too bad in one way but I guess I should not complain at not having
spent more of my life looking through the viewfinder at what my children
were doing.

Using a 40% mixture of antifreeze works well since you don't plan on
going to the frozen north in winter, but also keep in mind that it has a
lower boiling point than a 50% mixture as well.

I have one new, unused cap and one cap that's been used only a short
while (the left cap was in the list of things to disassemble when I
changed the power steering pump). I also have rotors in similar
condition. I won't be able to get to them for at least two weeks, however,
since we are in Phoenix for my surgery tomorrow.

If you need any specialized M119 parts, you might drop me a line, since
I'm planning on parting out our '94 E420. That's assuming the parts used
haven't changed between '94 and whenever your S500 was built. The M119 is
a really nice engine. It was frustrating to work on with it shoehorned

When I read this, I didn't know which engine you have. Looking at Part
Deux, however, I see that it is an M119. I've done the very job you
describe. THAT deserves an ATTABOY, for sure!

I hope you have more room around the engine with it in a 140 than it has

Good fix. I wonder if it applies to other cars as well.

HA! I wish that were true. Fortunately, I was not hurt. My neck was a
little sore for a couple of days, but I took some ibuprofen and its fine. It
will be one week tomorrow, and I am fine. Plus, in Kansas, there is a
threshold for medical bills before you can even make a claim for pain and
suffering. I'll just have to make the millions on some other suit. :)

Well, the insurance check that I am getting is more than I paid for the car.
So, sort of like free. I do know that the Lexus has value and I am trading it
in, but the insurance proceeds pays me more than I invested in the car
originally.

Mitch also asked, "Lifetime to him or lifetime to the car?"

Good question. If I have a problem, I will definitely argue that it meant
lifetime to the car.

You are probably right. In fact, that was my thinking too. The book value is
going to be significantly higher than what I have invested in the car. It makes
economic sense.

The family is great. My son, Henry, will be 2 years in exactly two weeks. He
is a blast. He is learning everyday and it is so fun to watch him learn new
things. He really tests things. I can tell he is going to be a good problem
solver. He is also going to be handful. He has beautiful blue eyes that are
very bright and clear. He is also already learning how to charm and flash a
smile when he wants to. He is going to be trouble later. :)

I had the same thing that Ford improved the cars pretty dramatically. The BMW
is doing great for its new owner. My firm's office manager bought it and she
and her husband love it. They don't drive it everyday. Its more of a fun car.
But, in the last month we have gotten two whoppers of snow storms, so I am
guessing it hasn't been driven much. I miss it.

Lifetime to him or lifetime to the car?

Could it be you've discovered the reason why somebody would spend
$6,000 customizing a car and then trade it in for less than $6,000?

Yep, the Snook car saga begins again.

Before you groan because I am trading cars again, this time its not my
fault. I was in a car wreck. Its pretty funny that a personal injury
trial lawyer gets rear-ended. But, the 2003 Lexus that belonged to my
Stepmother is much worse for wear. It really got smacked. The insurance
company is considering totaling it. If they do not total it, I do not
want the car because it has frame damage. The car really took a hit.

At any rate, my indy has a car that I am considering, but I want to make
sure I am not acting crazy. I don't think I got a head injury in the
crash . . . Just Kidding.

It is a 2004 Jaquar XJR. I know, when I heard Jaguar I thought that is
CRAZY. But, I can get a great deal on this car. I mean a real bargain.
My indy wants to buy the lexus (in its present smashed condition) and
then I pay him a little bit more for the jag. I get to keep the
insurance check. In fact, I would basically be getting the Jag for free.
My indy bought it from the local Jaguar dealer when they wholesaled it.
It has 110,000 miles and is in AMAZING shape. Apparently, the biggest
problems with these cars is the air ride suspension. The previous owner
had several problems and finally just had the local Jag dealer replace
everything with regular (i.e. non Jag air ride) components at a cost of
$6,000. They gave him a lifetime warranty on the repairs. Other than
that, I have not found anything awful about these cars. The R indicates
it has the 4.2L supercharged V8 and this thing is SCREAMING FAST. Not
that I need that. It is also a beautiful car. Am I being crazy to
consider this car? I think Jaguar has improved dramatically since Ford
bought them.
