It did not work after I installed the new electrical portion of the
ignition switch. The new switch was comparable the original I'd say. The
more I think about it, I think it's the wire from the ignition switch to
the solenoid.

I have a lot of cars.  But I don't own a single one with an
electric lift pump.  But my limited experience suggests that the
pressure switch (or timer?) will turn the pump off with air
still in the line.  So to pump all the air out requires a lot
more time than the pump cycle when the key is turned on.

I recently heard about "continuous chest compression".  Seems to
be an easy to do right, hard to do wrong technique to replace
CPR - and does a better job.

Assuming the soleoid works, this is the senario that first cinspired us to
wire a door bell button to start the '81 240D. Bad ignition switch, but
easier to wire around that to fix it. The kids loved it, and eventually
threw a fit when I announced I was going to replace the ignition switch
after the second door bell button burned up!

FLAPS sell a started switch for timing, adjusting valves, etc. that
connects to the big wire from the battery and the little wire on the
soleniod that is only a more elegant screw driver across the terminals -
but does make it easier to activate without shorting the battery for ground
and welding the screw driver to the chassis (DAHIK).

that it was a bad switch, but Herr Doktor insisted the switches never 
fail.   I "solved" the problem by getting a momentary contact push 
button switch from flaps.  I ran a wire from the Battery + through a 
fuse, to the switch, the from the other side of the switch to the 
solenoid small terminal.  I drilled a hole through the metal at the 
far lower left side of the dash, near the door to mount the switch. 
Then when the key did nothing, i pushed the button and had a starter. 
Prior to that, I carried a 20" long piece of 1/2" copper pipe in the 
car.  with it, I could jump the starter solenoid small terminal to 
the batt+ terminal to make it start.  Herr Doktor argued with me for 
years that it could not be the "ignition" switch.  After a few years, 
I ordered a new electric switch from Q just to try it.  No problems 
since then.   Then new switch was nowhere near as robust as the 
original though.


Switches DO go bad.  As thorough as Herr Doktor was, and as much 
experience as he had, There were anomalies that fell outside his 
research and experience.  Seemed like I got most of 'em.   RIP Herr 
Doktor.  We miss you.

Which of the terminals on the starter/solenoid are you jumping with 
the screwdriver?


If it's the two big bolts with the heavy wires on them then the only 
thing that will happen is that the starter will turn. Just what is 
happening.


If you are jumping the big wire coming into the solenoid to the 
small contact with the push-on terminal on it and the starter just 
turns then there is something wrong with the solenoid.


'80 has a screw terminal for the solenoid switch.



My guess is that you are jumping the two big wires. Try jumping the 
incoming big wire to the little terminal and it should make the 
starter turn the engine over rather then just running by itself. 
There should be a small wire on that small terminal. If there isn't 
then you need to look for it because it fell off. (push-on connector 
too loose) That would also be why turning the key doesn't make the 
starter work.

So the jumper is the solution.  LnL   Sounds like an "improvement" 
that does not work so well to me.  I like my Diesels.

The old Saabs used to have a timer in the pump relay, ran for about 
5 seconds IIRC. My 190e does something similar, and I think it's on 
a timer not a pressure switch.


I don't know if my e320 operates as it's supposed to, but I had 
Brianna turn the key to run while I had my hand on the pump, and 
nothing happened until she turned it to start.


I never hear the pump from the driver's seat like I do with the 190e.

Sounds like you have multiple problems:

- If the starter spins, but the engine does not, you at least need a new
  starter solenoid. More likely a new (rebuilt by Bosch) starter.

- If you cannot make the starter spin with the key, you have an
  electrical problem. Could be the Neutral/Park lockout switch on the
  side of the automatic transmission. Could be wiring or anything else on
  the journey from the battery to the center terminal on the soleniod.

I remember Lemmings, I'm surprised that never made it to Android or iOS.
OTOH zaxxon only came to Android a few months ago so maybe it is on its
way.

I recently discovered gog.com, hunting a game I only vaguely remembered
from my wasted youth (Martian Dreams, if you are wondering).  It is very
different playing a DOS game from the early 90s on a cell phone under a DOS
x86 emulator than it was watching the characters trod along on my PS2 model
30.  I remember that I would put a book on the keyboard over dinner to get
the characters to travel through the vast wastelands, hours and hours to
cross the map.  On the phone it is quite playable, if not very interesting
by the metric of more modern games. :)

I also remember having to check every program's requirements; the PS2 had
MCGA so a lot of VGA games would work, since it was popular to cheat on the
resolution - but definitely no EGA!

I am trying to recall the first program I bought.  I do remember the first
bit of shareware I registered, I paid my mother to send a check to the
author of a fractal generator.  I don't think I have the floppy with the
registered version around anymore...

I also remember programming assembler and using Fidonet, and teaching my
English teacher (recently deceased) to use QWK mail.  I never expected the
information of the whole world would be on HTTP, and I'd be shocked when I
-didn't- have a connection to the Internet.  Funny how things change.

The radio slides back into the recess slightly.  There is a horizontal
piece behind the front panel that you "lock" in with two vertical strips of
metal, which press against the top and bottom of the console, just above
and below the radio cutout.

In other words, the cutout should be the height of the radio back section.
It would probably work as long as the cutout is smaller than the front
panel.

To be honest the sizes are pretty standard, if there is no obvious hacking
then it will probably work.  My 300D radio got replaced with an aftermarket
by the po, then literally ripped out by a ham handed thief, and still the
proper Becker and also the SDL's Becker fit perfectly.  If you are really
curious I can get you a depth tomorrow.

wire going from the ignition switch to the solenoid and see if that lights

Sounds like you are not getting the right terminals with the screwdriver.
You need the big top one and the little o e to engage the motor and
solenoid.  If you just cross the big two only the starter motor will spin.

Which of the terminals on the starter/solenoid are you jumping with the 
screwdriver?

If it's the two big bolts with the heavy wires on them then the only thing that 
will happen is that the starter will turn. Just what is happening. 

If you are jumping the big wire coming into the solenoid to the small contact 
with the push-on terminal on it and the starter just turns then there is 
something wrong with the solenoid.

My guess is that you are jumping the two big wires. Try jumping the incoming 
big wire to the little terminal and it should make the starter turn the engine 
over rather then just running by itself. There should be a small wire on that 
small terminal. If there isn't then you need to look for it because it fell 
off. (push-on connector too loose) That would also be why turning the key 
doesn't make the starter work.

The old Saabs used to have a timer in the pump relay, ran for about 5 seconds 
IIRC. My 190e does something similar, and I think it's on a timer not a pressure 
switch.


I don't know if my e320 operates as it's supposed to, but I had Brianna turn the 
key to run while I had my hand on the pump, and nothing happened until she 
turned it to start.


I never hear the pump from the driver's seat like I do with the 190e.

I might have related my story about driving through Athens some years 
ago.  We were headed from Sunion (Temple of Poseidon is there, very cool 
setting, amazing view) and had stopped at some little taverna on the 
water for late lunch, then were going to Korinthos down on the 
Peloponnese.  Had to go through Athens, and it was getting on to about 
4PM and I was thinking it was going to be horrific traffic.


So we get close to downtown Athens and are driving along, and there is 
NO TRAFFIC and all these people standing alongside the road waving at us 
and screaming.  WTH?  We are trying to figure this out, thinking maybe 
some holiday or something, when all hell breaks loose and some screaming 
little ricers in gaudy colors, stickers and such, come blasting by.  
Just about scared the  out of me!  I realize this must be some kind 
of race and the streets have been closed for these guys and somehow we 
were the last vehicle through, or I managed to miss something and just

What "starter" terminals are we referring to?
Are you on the starter or the solenoid?

You might pull the vacuum line from the shutoff valve, that sounds to me like 
the reason for the car not starting when the starter spins.

I guess the other thing that came to mind after posting my question was 
that a photo would assist in anyone's opinion of whether my car has been 
modified to install an aftermarket unit. I don't think so but I am no 
judge of what it should look like either.

with giving you some idea of what it costs to reman one of these if you need it.

in Havbro Nielsen's office at Sondrestrom Air Base, Greenland.  I was 
Director of Engineering, in charge of construction and maintenance of

had asked Havbro about some aspect of one of the projects we had 
underway.  He was standing on the other side of the table from me

We were having our usual friendly but very business-like discussion of 
the situation at hand.  Suddenly, Havbro stopped in mid-sentence, 
turned and rushed outside the building.  I thought for a second that 
he had seen something out the window behind me that needed his 
immediate attention.  I turned, glanced out and saw nothing unusual.  
To rush out without saying, "Please, excuse me", or something to that 
effect was not like Havbro, at all.  He was every bit a gentleman and 
a stickler for protocol.  I was still a bit shocked and confused by 
his sudden departure and even said aloud to myself, "Well, I guess 
he'll be back in a minute." He had been gone for only a few seconds 
when a Danish workman came rushing inside the building and past the 
doorway to Havbro's office yelling, "Call emergency!  Havbro's down!

He lived for 17 more years, and died of a heart attack in 1996.

Starter is not engaging but only when using big screwdriver. Key does
nothing. Guess I will get the light out tomorrow and check stuff out. I
hate electrical crap. Ironic, huh.

 On a similar wave length, my dog seems dense - and I don't mean stupid 
- he is quite a smart little fellow.
He is a Bichon Frise and that is probably why. He has a fair amount of 
fur despite the fact that we have him groomed often. I am amazed when I 
pick him up, at how heavy and solid he feels.
He is only the size of a good sized cat and weighs about 15 pounds but 
he is solid.
He is 10 years old this July and spends most of his time laying on our 
bed - I joke that his job is to hold the bed down all day - but he is 
quite muscular.

[MBZ] OT - Sondy Tale - Havbro's Down!

'Nother Sondy Tale; 'don't think I've posted this before; if so, please 
pardon the redundancy.  'Hope it's not too long for a Friday (Moose Day).


HAVBRO'S  DOWN!

One morning about mid-January, 1979, I was sitting at a briefing table in 
Havbro Nielsen's office at Sondrestrom Air Base, Greenland.  I was Director 
of Engineering, in charge of construction and maintenance of all physical 
facilities on base.  Havbro was the Danish civilian, civil engineering 
contractor's chief engineer, my civilian counterpart.  I had asked Havbro 
about some aspect of one of the projects we had underway.  He was standing 
on the other side of the table from me using a flip chart to his left as a 
briefing aid.  The door into the office was behind him.


We were having our usual friendly but very business-like discussion of the 
situation at hand.  Suddenly, Havbro stopped in mid-sentence, turned and 
rushed outside the building.  I thought for a second that he had seen 
something out the window behind me that needed his immediate attention.  I 
turned, glanced out and saw nothing unusual.  To rush out without saying, 
"Please, excuse me", or something to that effect was not like Havbro, at 
all.  He was every bit a gentleman and a stickler for protocol.  I was still 
a bit shocked and confused by his sudden departure and even said aloud to 
myself, "Well, I guess he'll be back in a minute."  He had been gone for 
only a few seconds when a Danish workman came rushing inside the building 
and past the doorway to Havbro's office yelling, "Call emergency!  Havbro's 
down!  Call emergency!"


As Havbro's secretary grabbed the phone, I rushed outside and found Havbro 
lying on the frozen ground immediately outside the doorway.  My immediate 
thought was that he was dead.  His eyes had the classic "blank stare" of 
death, and I saw no evidence of his breathing.  I felt quickly for a pulse 
at his wrist then at the side of his neck beneath his ear; I felt none, but 
I also thought, "I may not be feeling just the right place, especially in my 
excitement."  I felt certain, though, that he was dead.


I had never had any CPR training.  I had seen actors on TV "perform" CPR in 
such shows as "Emergency", "Squad 51", etc.; I had even seen a couple of Los 
Angeles EMT's (emergency medical technicians) on the real Squad 53 
performing CPR on an actual victim as I crept past an accident scene in Los 
Angeles several months before, but I had never had any training in it and 
had never attempted such.  My thought was, "Havbro is dead; I must do 
something; if I can keep some air/oxygen and blood moving through his system 
'til the doctor gets here, it may help."  I started pumping slowly and 
rhythmically on his chest the way I had seen them do on TV and on the street 
in LA as I passed slowly in the car.


Meanwhile, the Danish workman had come back out of the building and was 
kneeling beside Havbro, holding his hand and calling, "Havbro!  Havbro!"  He 
also knew that Havbro was dead.  I never said a word - I just thought I 
would keep pumping as long as it takes - 'til a doctor or EMT could get 
there.  As I heard the siren of the ambulance a couple of blocks away, 
Havbro's eyes suddenly fluttered; he gasped a couple of times and started 
trying to get up!  The workman and I tried to restrain him and tell him not 
to get up - to just lie there, but as the ambulance pulled up, Havbro got up 
and walked over to it!  He got in the ambulance, and they drove away as the 
workman and I just stood there in shocked disbelief.


A few minutes later, the workman and I went to the hospital and told the 
nurses and the doctor what had happened.  At first, they doubted what we 
were telling them, but they soon realized that if it had not been for the 
pumping on his chest, Havbro would likely have been permanently dead.


They flew him to Copenhagen the next day for extensive testing and 
treatment.  I left about three weeks later and have not seen Havbro again. 
He recovered and returned to work for several more years at Sondrestrom.  I 
spoke to him on the phone several months after this incident.  He cited some 
type of heart problem, but I don't remember the details.

He lived for 17 more years, and died of a heart attack in 1996.

The president of Havbro's company in Copenhagen, Danish Arctic Contractors, 
sent the Air Force and me a letter of thanks and commendation for having 
such "a well-trained officer who knew exactly what to do in such an 
emergency."  As I said before, though, I've never had such training, and I 
certainly did not know "exactly what to do."  I was guided by nothing more 
than the basic principles of "never give up," and "no matter how bad things 
get, you have to be able to think and do something."

When you say "it spins the starter" do you mean only the starter, or 
that the engine turns over but does not catch.
If the former, then the starter is not engaging the ring gear or 
something is wrong with the ringgear/flywheel etc.


If the latter, then one must wonder if the engine is getting fuel or if 
the glow plugs are not getting power with the key on.

Or are you saying that you can crank it from the starter but the engine won't 
fire?

If it's the starter won't turn when using the ignition key, you need to get a 
test light and work backwards from the starter solenoid.

[MBZ] No Start, 240D

Over the last 4 months, I have replaced the following:
Ignition switch (electrical and mechanical portions)
Starter
Voltage regulator
Cables
Car will not start. Nothing happens when key is turned. When I turn the key
on and try to start it using the big old screwdriver, it just spins the
starter.What should I check? I'm getting annoyed.

As I understood it, many of the koalas she had were either found injured or 
were displaced when land was cleared for new construction.

Most of the animals she got were returned to the wild. There was just a small 
number of them that she kept permanently due to their injuries or that they 
were too socialized to turn loose and survive.

They didn't smell all that great either.

The gummint-funded Propaganda Broadcasting System had a show a few weeks 
back about koalas ("kwallas" like "walla") and how they were being 
squeezed out of their habitats by developments, and also that they were 
prone to some STD that was killing them.  Go figure.

Heh!  I was about to suggest that.  It's one of the advantages
of an electric lift pump.

The 'lectric FP should run when the key is "on" until it hits the 
pressure limit.   Should not be a need for a jumper.  Am I missing 
something?

rehab facility for koalas at their sheep station. We flew out there a couple of 
times when I visited and spent weekends with them.

You pick one up expecting it to be fairly light and in the process you wrench
