[MBZ] New story at Bring a Trailer - '82 300TD w/V8

2013-05-13 Thread Jon Agne

 V8-Swapped 1982 Mercedes Station Wagon

This 1982 Mercedes Benz 300TD W123 wagon is powered by a carbureted 383 Chevy
crate V8. We’d swap in steel wheels with painted taxi-cab hubcaps, delete the
tint, and add the factory steering wheel to make it pretty much perfect for
grudge night. Find it here on eBay in Orlando, Florida for $18,900. Special
thanks to BaT reader Chris P. for this submission!

I've taken pictures with my iPhone as well. When I put stuff on Craigslist,
I usually have someone help me take the picture. Someone wanted a close-up
of the chassis of an RC car I was selling, and since there was no one around
to take the picture, I just aimed the phone at it and shot. I wonder if this
was the reason why I never got a response? Most people can't understand how
a blind guy can drive and repair RC cars, and I sure can't take good pictures
of them :D!! They do get the picture once they actually take the time to
show up in person and test drive and inspect my well-maintained RC's.

Our deer are large enough.

I've hit three with my 300td

One was mostly just grill and headlight doors, the next was AC
condenser and fan and grill, headlights, and some damage to radiator
as well (I glued it up and used it pressurized for another year) as
tweaking the lip of the hood and bending the radiator support a
bunch and bending the fan.

Heavy enough!

Then there was the one last month that busted my driver's side
window and showered me with glass and busted the mirror glass.

By the way, the double sided tape is holding the replacement glass fine

thanks,

Those are pansy a** road rats. The deer around here do a min of
$4000 damage, and generally more than that. You are in a for a frame
shop as well as the hood and fenders, grill, lights etc. THest are
close to 200lbs dressed.

Our old van was totalled after hitting the 4th road rat. Ins. paid
$4000+ and I bought a replacement with 100k miles less for $2000.

One hit pretty much wipes out a 124.

Re: [MBZ] OT: chain saws

2013-05-13 Thread Curt Raymond
Stihl seems to have a rabid following. I consider it a Ford vs Chevy debate, I
bought the Husky because theres a dealer (I bought from a saw shop) near my
house and the Stihl guy is miles and miles away.

Stihl seems to run a lot more money for the same size/power saw too.

I'm very anti-Poulin for the new ones, seems like they only make really cheap
crap.

We've got an old (probably 30 years) Echo at camp. Its a good saw but overkill
for what we need and HEAVY. I can run my Husky for a lot longer because its
lighter and doesn't vibrate as much.

A helmet with ear and eye protection is a vital component too as are chaps if
for not other reason than they protect you when you bull through the brush.

Just yesterday I noticed that Tractor Supply switched from Husqvarna
to Jonsered. AFAIK Jonsered makes good saws but doesn't have much
for name recognition, at least around here...

Red Jonesies are popular in N WI where a lot of people heat with
wood. For my money I'd still buy stihl.

Moose is excellent. My cousin in Canada has a chain saw (with vegetable oil
in the oiler) dedicated to moose butchering. Comment to tie this thread in
with the chain saw thread). When hunting moose, always have a practical
plan for getting the moose from where it is dropped to where it will be
butchered and consumed.

As with deer, I prefer to hit them with a Remington rather than a Benz.
I've had some close calls (with a Volvo), but never actually hit any with a
vehicle.

I've hit three with my 300td

One was mostly just grill and headlight doors, the next was AC

tweaking the lip of the hood and bending the radiator support a bunch

  Heavy enough!

2013-05-13 Thread Randy Bennell

Once again, I am coming in late.

I have a Husquvarna (sp??) that I quite like. Got it at Lowe's in the
USA for something over $200 a couple of years back.

Not the Rancher but the next one down.
Lighter, quieter and more powerful than what I was used to and probably
safer too.

We had a pair of old Homelite XL's that would not die.
A blue one that was probably bought around 1970 and then a red one that
was likely purchased around 1980.

Still have the red one and sold the blue one to a friend of my younger son.

Red one could use a new chain but apart from that, no real issues.
However, I am not sure about parts availability.

Needs to be gas-powered, too large a lot for electric to be practical.

Don't really know much about them. I don't need anything
lumberjack-quality, but don't want a piece of junk either. It's
probably something I will only use a few times a year. Maybe should
just rent one as needed?

The MBCA forum was much better under the original Listmom, Kathy Kenel.
 The Anti-Kathy people were/are morons.

BTW, for the newcomers, Kathy is the reason we sometimes refer to Kaleb

[MBZ] best chain saw

2013-05-13 Thread Rick Hawkins Java

thanks,
Folks,

THe best chainsaw that i ever had was an old Poulan pulpwooder's saw,
i would call it. It was huge and had a big open bow for a bar. It was
only for cutting up logs. You'd put the end of the bow up against the
log and there was a casting clamped to bottom of the bow that you put
under the log. You would then lift the motor end up and the bow would
go deeper and deeper into the log. You could just cut logs on the
ground.

I think they are supposed to be incredibly dangerous. Are they even
still made. I had mine back in the late 70's to mid 80's when i heated
with wood.

It was a bear to start or even to pick up, to drop while holding the
starter cord to start it. I could do it fine from age 25 to 35, but i
don't know about now, at nearly 59. Once running it was great and
never would quit.

I got the machine from my local chainsaw repair guy who would always
sell me interesting saws that needed a little work.

I think, that sadly, it was stolen at some point.

Now all i have are a couple of barely used mass marketed Poulans
maybe a 2150 and a 2300 with bars that are probably too long. They
suck. I bought them for probably $5 or $10 each at yard sales. Once
running, they are ok, but since much of my living is made cleaning
carbs on motor scooters, i have little interest in cleaning chainsaw
carbs.

I usually start them with starting fluid for the little bit of cutting
that i have to do, normally. Now i have a big tree that i had a crazy
guy take down and need to cut up the limbs on the ground.
