Re: [MBZ] Next Shoe, Was: Go Go TSA!

We went through that when Medicare began. Docs were supposed to retire
or change professions en masse. Didn't happen. Some tried refusing
Medicare patients. That didn't work either.
The young generations attitudes are different than ours, just as they
nearly always are.
For example, I told a young urology resident that he ought to open an
office in Citrus County, Florida where I live; that there is a big
demand there because of all the retirees. He said no, that he was going
to work for an (HMO?) since private medicine was on the way out; that he
looked forward to having a regular income without the hassle of private
medicine. His father is a private MD so his choice seems to be based on
a thorough knowledge of private medicine.

I think the left lane thing is more of an attitude than anything else. The

this.

I don't know if it is just me or what, but lately it seems people simply
do not know how to drive. I do a lot of highway driving every day,
spending as much as 4 hours of my day on the interstate. People
increasingly DRIVE in the passing lane and will not move over. It is
ridiculous. I even have started seeing semis doing the same thing.
These people will create a rolling roadblock for miles and miles.

[MBZ] Welding helmet update

2014-03-16 Thread Curt Raymond
So some of you might remember that my auto-darkening welding helmet got super
slow to darken. I refer to this link: http://www.pskl.us/wp/?p=648

Mine is a Northern Tool helmet but its completely identical inside to the one
in the link. I like his solution but decided I was going to go with AA
batteries because I have lots of them. It seemed to me that there was no reason
to use 2 sets of batteries for this job when one would do. I removed the old
cells, wired jumpers from the left port to the right. I was careful to carry +
to + and - to -.
The battery carrier I'd bought at Radio Shack has a 9volt style connector on
top making it removable. I thought this would make changing batteries easier.
So I soldered in a 9 volt style pickup, then connected and tested by holding it
in the sunlight, cover the sensors and it lightens, remove my hand and it
darkens instantly. Sweet!

Problem, after about 2 minutes it starts to smell hot, in fact it IS hot, the
batteries and the wires. Clearly somebody is drawing power, more power than I
expect considering the assembly is face down on my desk. My multi-meter
suggests its 3A of draw which is huge from AA batteries...

So it would appear connecting the two sides together is a bad idea. This might
explain why in the link and in my helmet one of the two batteries was dead
while the other was fine. Now that I've got to go back to Radio Shack I'm
debating if I want the weight of 4 AA batteries or if I shouldn't go with AAA
like the other guy did.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel-less

2014-03-16 Thread Curt Raymond
Mine has 241,9something so thats clearly not true.

The dual mass flywheel is a known weak point. The suspensions seem to just come
apart all at once. Where a Mercedes around 200,000 needs (in my experience) a
ball joint and shocks from what I've seen online a Volkswagen needs all the
struts done. Either that or VW people are really good at ignoring how bad the
suspension is getting until they all of a sudden need a bunch of work. I'm
seeing a lot of people online with 2004-2006 cars in the same place Bob was at.
In no small part you get what you pay for. In '98 my Jetta still cost half of
what my 190D did in '84.

That said with the money put into it (other than the DMF that could be done
over time) thats still a $10k car. My '98 with its rust is still a $3k car...

Very sorry to hear that.

So a VW diesel will only last about 200k miles or less?

That looks like it will be my one data point. I get that everything I
wanted to do was normal maintenance... except the flywheel. There were lots
of other fit and finish issues. Like it was said, it is a non-MB diesel

So some of you might remember that my auto-darkening welding helmet got
super slow to darken. I refer to this link: http://www.pskl.us/wp/?p=648

Mine is a Northern Tool helmet but its completely identical inside to the
one in the link. I like his solution but decided I was going to go with AA
batteries because I have lots of them. It seemed to me that there was no
reason to use 2 sets of batteries for this job when one would do. I removed
the old cells, wired jumpers from the left port to the right. I was careful
to carry + to + and - to -.
The battery carrier I'd bought at Radio Shack has a 9volt style connector on
top making it removable. I thought this would make changing batteries
easier. So I soldered in a 9 volt style pickup, then connected and tested by
holding it in the sunlight, cover the sensors and it lightens, remove my
hand and it darkens instantly. Sweet!

Problem, after about 2 minutes it starts to smell hot, in fact it IS hot,
the batteries and the wires. Clearly somebody is drawing power, more power
than I expect considering the assembly is face down on my desk. My
multi-meter suggests its 3A of draw which is huge from AA batteries...

So it would appear connecting the two sides together is a bad idea. This
might explain why in the link and in my helmet one of the two batteries was
dead while the other was fine. Now that I've got to go back to Radio Shack
I'm debating if I want the weight of 4 AA batteries or if I shouldn't go
with AAA like the other guy did.

If the only thing connected between the two sides is the power
leads, it is rather odd that they would cause a problem. One thing
you could try is putting a resistor in series. I'd try 100 to 300
ohm or so. That will isolate the two sides in case there is
something screwing going on with the regulator. That won't work if
the circuit needs a current surge.

If you put the battery boxes near the pivot, it won't affect the
balance of the helmet as much.

[MBZ] Welding helmet - finale

2014-03-16 Thread Curt Raymond
I know you guys have been on pins and needles. ;)

Went to Radio Shack and picked out their last 2 AAA battery holder, fortunately
I'd bought one the last time I was there. I removed the 2 AA holder and
installed the AAA holders in its place. I plugged in the batteries and checked
function, then gave it a few minutes to heat up. Seeing no heat up I potted the
wires into the case with hot glue, then assembled the shield itself with a
little more hot glue just to pull in the corners that had lifted when I cut it
apart. Installed the shield into the helmet and again used hot glue to hold the
battery holders in place just above the shield. This places them forward of the
hinge but I think actually improves balance a little.

The enloop AAA rechargables from my calculator provide power for now. Need to
order some more batteries. It turns out I only own 8 AAA rechargables but
something like 30 AAs.

[MBZ] A story

2014-03-16 Thread Dieselhead

An old guy and his bucket of shrimp

It happened every Friday evening, almost without fail, when the sun
resembled a

Giant orange and was starting to dip into the blue ocean.

Old Ed came strolling along the beach to his favorite pier.
Clutched in his bony hand was a bucket of shrimp.
Ed walks out to the end of the pier, where it seems he almost has
the world to himself.
The glow of the sun is a golden bronze now.

Everybody's gone, except for a few joggers on the beach.
Standing out on the end of the pier, Ed is alone with his
thoughts...and his bucket of shrimp.

Before long, however, he is no longer alone.
Up in the sky a thousand white dots come screeching and squawking,
Winging their way toward that lanky frame standing there on the end
of the pier.

Before long, dozens of seagulls have enveloped him, their wings
fluttering and flapping wildly.
Ed stands there tossing shrimp to the hungry birds. As he does, if
you listen closely,

You can hear him say with a smile, 'Thank you. Thank you.'

In a few short minutes the bucket is empty. But Ed doesn't leave.

He stands there lost in thought, as though transported to another
time and place.

When he finally turns around and begins to walk back toward the beach,
A few of the birds hop along the pier with him until he gets to the
stairs, and then they, too, fly away.

And old Ed quietly makes his way down to the end of the beach and on home.

If you were sitting there on the pier with your fishing line in the water,
Ed might seem like 'a funny old duck,' as my dad used to say. Or,
to onlookers, he's just another
Old codger, lost in his own weird world, feeding the seagullswith a
bucket full of shrimp.

To the onlooker, rituals can look either very strange or very empty.
They can seem altogether unimportant ... maybe even a lot of nonsense.

Old folks often do strange things,at least in the eyes ofBoomers and Busters.

Most of them would probably write Old Ed off, down there in Florida.
That's too bad. They'd do well to know him better.

His full name: Eddie Rickenbacker. He was a famous hero in World War I,
And then he was in WWII. On one of his flying missions across the Pacific,
He and his seven-member crew went down. Miraculously, all of the men survived,
Crawled out of their plane, and climbed into a life raft.

Captain Rickenbacker and his crew floated for days on the rough
waters of the Pacific.
They fought the sun. They fought sharks. Most of all, they fought
hunger and thirst.
By the eighth day their rations ran out. No food. No water. They
were hundreds of miles
From land and no one knew where they were or even if they were
alive. Every day across
America millions wondered and prayed that EddieRickenbacker might
somehow be found alive.

The men adrift needed a miracle. That afternoon they had a
simple devotional service

And prayed for a miracle. They tried to nap. Eddie leaned back and pulled his
Military cap over his nose. Time dragged on. All he could hear was
the slap of the waves against the raft...

Suddenly, Eddie felt something land on the top of his cap. It was a seagull!

Old Ed would later describe how he sat perfectly still, planning his
next move.
With a flash of his hand and a squawk from the gull, he managed to
grab it and wring its neck.
He tore the feathers off, and he and his starving crew made a meal
of it - a very slight
Meal for eight men. Then they used the intestines for bait. With it,
they caught fish,
Which gave them food and more bait . . . and the cycle continued.
With that simple
Survival technique, they were able to endure the rigors of the sea
until they were

Found and rescued after 24 days at sea.

Eddie Rickenbacker lived many years beyond that ordeal, but he never
forgot the

Sacrifice of that first life-saving seagull... And he never stopped saying,
'Thank you.' That's why almost every Friday night he would walk to the end
Of the pier with a bucket full of shrimp and a heart full of gratitude.

Another story about the trials and sacrifices that brave men have

As you can see, I chose to pass it on.
It is a great story that many don't know...You've got to be careful

You just never know what they have done during their lifetime.

telling 'em we need to dismantle the railings and replace the roof before
repairing/rebuilding railings. Finally got roof replaced coupla weeks ago

Hi Wilton,
is all that work the result of our severe winter weather this year or
was it just a matter of regular maintenance catching up with you?
Personally, I tend to put things off longer than I should until i have
numerous things that need attention. I used to be better at doing stuff
as needed, which prevented a land slide of work at once.I must be
getting lazy in my old age.? ;-)

The 300D is like that. Need to do the front wheel bearings and the
front struts as well. Also need to have rear brake hard piping replaced
and check the rear suspension bushings.Oh yeah, I need to find the
leak in the AC system. If it's in the evap inside the dash I may have to
buy another car as my wife cannot have a daily driver without AC in our Va
summer heat. So much stuff, so little time

Good luck with all that stuff Wilton!

Sincerely,
Larry

I know you guys have been on pins and needles. ;)

Went to Radio Shack and picked out their last 2 AAA battery holder,
fortunately I'd bought one the last time I was there. I removed the 2 AA
holder and installed the AAA holders in its place. I plugged in the
batteries and checked function, then gave it a few minutes to heat up.
Seeing no heat up I potted the wires into the case with hot glue, then
assembled the shield itself with a little more hot glue just to pull in
the corners that had lifted when I cut it apart. Installed the shield into
the helmet and again used hot glue to hold the battery holders in place
just above the shield. This places them forward of the hinge but I think
actually improves balance a little.

The enloop AAA rechargables from my calculator provide power for now. Need
to order some more batteries. It turns out I only own 8 AAA rechargables
but something like 30 AAs.

Much of is a matter of stuff catching up sense I've been unable to do it
myself for nearly 15 years. Widow's walk roof has been leaking since I've
been here for 26 years; others who worked on it did inadequate jobs; 'kept
telling 'em we need to dismantle the railings and replace the roof before
repairing/rebuilding railings. Finally got roof replaced coupla weeks ago
with EPDM (membrane); same on bay area roof.

Hi Wilton,
is all that work the result of our severe winter weather this year or
was it just a matter of regular maintenance catching up with you?
Personally, I tend to put things off longer than I should until i have
numerous things that need attention. I used to be better at doing stuff
as needed, which prevented a land slide of work at once.I must be
getting lazy in my old age.? ;-)

The 300D is like that. Need to do the front wheel bearings and the
front struts as well. Also need to have rear brake hard piping replaced
and check the rear suspension bushings.Oh yeah, I need to find the
leak in the AC system. If it's in the evap inside the dash I may have
to buy another car as my wife cannot have a daily driver without AC in
our Va summer heat. So much stuff, so little time

Good luck with all that stuff Wilton!

Sincerely,
Larry

try the gold fixed shade.  you will like it. Seems like all the pro welders I
