You make money with the trailer Unless you want to commit to a CDL and life bouncing over the road, you could buy a trailer and use it foe moving and storage. A dry van that is roadworthy and has a recent DOT inspection can be had for $2500 to $5000. Residual scrap value is $1200 to $2500. You can hire a tractor and driver. Keep in mind that FTL freight is about $3 to $3.50/mile and for a one way haul, you will probably pay $5 to $7 per mile one way, as you are in reality paying the tractor and driver to bobtail back home from IN. Unless you get really lucky and find someone who has a load going the other way. (bought a new trailer in IL or IN and needs to get it home) Dunno about your state, but here it is $35 a year to license a trailer. The weather forecast here in northern Maine is interesting, they're telling us how cold it could be based on Nuri but then mention it'll probably rain by Wednesday. Temps are hovering just around freezing. I'm going to quit listening to the weather on NPR, they predicted it would snow all day Friday which it did but we got maybe 3 total, not the 9-12 they predicted. Actually we probably got more but it was wet and heavy, the temp hovered right at freezing all day and since the ground isn't frozen very little of it stuck. Interestingly there seems to be a line at the the Aroostook river. As I write this I'm in Presque Isle which is on the south side and theres maybe an inch more snow. I suspect farther south theres even more. The same was true in the last storm, Dimitri and Jon were on the very southern edge, where RT 95 ends in Houlton had the most and the farther north I went from there the less snow there was. Craig via Mercedes wrote: At what size of trailer does one need to have DOT compliance? Or is it commercial versus private? I think once you put magnetic signs for your business on the doors of the pickup without painting DOT numbers on it you're asking for it. Back in 2002, he could drive a 28' box truck full of materials with a helper driving an F350 towing a couple of fork trucks and a scissors lift, no DOT numbers or weigh stations AFAIK, or maybe he just didn't know any better. By 2005 he'd sold the box truck because it had to stop at weigh stations. Soon after, he'd had problems with the F350 because its GVWR was over 10k and switched to a F250. In recent years the F250 has DOT numbers on it and he gripes a lot. I don't know if it's because it is used for business or because the combined truck/trailer weight is over 10k. I used to read about Hot-Shots hauling freight with F350s and Ram 3500s maybe 10-15 years ago, and that end of the business seemed to be about as regulated as gypsy taxis. Maybe my friend who works on factory conveyor systems just got caught up in a regulatory crackdown on the hotshots. I do know that as a guy who hauls his own tools on the road about 10-20 times a year, he doesn't think he should bear the same regulatory costs as somebody who has a long haul semi on the road 300 days a year. DOT inspection is a requirement for both the truck and trailer. Insurance for a commercial truck will shock your socks off. Trailer not so much. License for truck will run in the thousands per year. Trailer license, if done as a permanent tag could run in the $500 range [perhaps, depending on what state you choose to register it in]. My wife worked with a guy who collected cars (he had an S600 he bought cheap, said he had no problems with it, surprising, I would see it parked next to my wife's SD in the parking lot) and told me he had a big tractor/trailer he would drive around to collect them. I asked if that was a problem, licensing and all that. He said he got a CDL and took one of those classes on driving the truck but other than that it wasn't a big deal. I guess since it was a private owner different rules applied? I never pursued the car thing, I should try to do that. He lives around here somewhere on a farm with a big barn he said. --R On 11/9/14 2:25 PM, G Mann via Mercedes wrote: DOT inspection is a requirement for both the truck and trailer. Re: [MBZ] Fw: Today's CL Crack Smoker
After my Dad passed my Mom worked for a couple of different people over the years just to keep busy and have some pin money. One of the places she worked with was an equipment moving company that hauled stuff all over the US. She answered phones, so she would be the first point of contact when the drivers called in to Dispatch. She said that there were certain states where the drivers knew they would be stopped and scrutinized, and often kept off the road until things were put in order by the state DOT boys. She also said that most of their drivers had multiple driver's licenses, a chosen one which they would present when stopped depending on the state they were in. I worked next to Mayflower's national headquarters in Zionsville, IN when I first started in the generator business. Mayflower recruited drivers big time, providing training, tractors, etc. Many of them came by our place because they were using power units powered by Onan engines for heating the cab and providing electricity. From what most of them told us, they were beholden to Mayflower for pretty much the next decade or so, as it would take that long to pay off the tractor and training expenses that Mayflower fronted them. We also heard stories about new drivers who wanted to stay in motels rather than their sleepers, and how they often ended up in the hole or close to bankruptcy as a result. Expenses were so tight that you pretty much had to live in the truck to make a decent living, or so we were told. I listen to them through a good part of the day while I am working. What I notice is that you have to be aware of what they DONT tell in a story more than what they DO tell. What they tell is correct and reasonable, but they tend to leave out the parts that don't comport with their progressive agenda. [MBZ] The Brakes that WON'T - 1983 300TD
Some of you will recall my write up of the intermittent loss of power braking on my 1983 300TD, coupled with the loss of engine shut off (won't turn off with key). I fiddled with a rubber connector to the brake booster line, and happily the problem disappeared for nearly a week. The issue then resurfaced, but now the following symptoms occur all the time: 1) Power brakes completely gone - must apply extremely forceful pressure on the brake pedal (or petal, if you prefer). 2) Cannot shut off the engine with key - must be done manually 3) Vacuum door locks completely inoperative, even with the engine running. Otherwise, everything else on the car works fine. Whoever is the first to successfully diagnose this problem, based solely on the symptoms enunciated above, wins a coveted ATTABOY. Good luck. Democracy: Two wolves and One sheep voting on what to have for dinner. Republic: One well armed sheep inviting Two wolves to eat all the grass they want. Questions? The news media, and I impose the same responsibility on all of them, has failed for about 3 decades to actually report news.. rather, they have focused on opinions, mostly their own. I hold them all in contempt for doing that. It is insulting in many ways, particularly when they only apply the 4D Rule to anything they report. Deceive, Deny, Delay, Deflect. We never get the whole truth, on time, with responsibility given to the party who did the act. The public has responded by simply using the OFF feature, print media sales are lower than any time in history, electronic media watcher count lower percentages as well.. Americans, most at least, want the facts, just the facts.. we will draw our own conclusions. My opinion may not reflect others opinions. Grant...
