Re: [MBZ] More OT - Christmas presents

2014-12-17 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

I just gave out presents today that were homemade.
Apple champagne. High pressure bubbly! Vintage 2007 from
2005 crop year. It keeps getting more mellow.Mm!
Apricot Jam made from tree ripened apricots from the last
crop on my mom's tree.
Venison pastrami, made from venison given to me. I made it
into pastrami and gave some back to him.

Prior years:
In grade school, I made a lamp from walnut my Grampa cut in the 1930s
In Jr high, I made a pair of turned lamps form the same
vintage walnut. Those were given to my parents, and I have them back
now.

In Jr high, a notecenter for the wall. Also given to my parents
Lots of stuff I don't remember since then.

Last year I gave my son my onyx chess set , then made a wooden case
for it so everything fits and is protected by foam.

I never carved any neat toys like Wilton and Randy's. My pinewood
derby car was not pretty, but I made it. Most of the others, even
back then, were made by their dads.

G: These low prices bring back the joy of driving to many people. I've been
running the wheels off my Prius; 48.xx miles per gallon, and $1.99 per gallon
gas; about 4 cents per mile!

Besides that, the hippies, tree huggers, vegetarians, and ultraliberals at the
wine and cheese restaurant welcome me with open arms; even though I usually
come in wearing carpenter blue jeans, a Dubya T-shirt, and a National Rifle
Association cap. (just kidding).

I have made a few things over the years but not nearly so many as I
might have if I had put my mind to it.
I also do not think I have photos of all of them so won't be able to
share images of some of them.

Off the top of my head, I can recall making:

A clock for my sister turned on the wood lathe and stencilled by my wife.
A clock for my mother that my wife also contributed to - I made the case
and she embroidered the face.
Hand held vanity mirrors for each of the ladies in the family. My wife
has one on her dresser so I could easily take a photo of it.
A Framed Mirror with a picture in it for my sister that was also a joint
effort with my wife who embroidered the picture.
I doubt I have a photo but it is on the wall at my sister's so she could
provide one for me if I asked her to.
Rocking horses for my elder son and a few years later a copy for my
niece. My son's is in the attic of our garage awaiting grand children to
put it to use.
A hobby horse for my younger son that had to be taken away and hidden
before he destroyed the house with it - wielded like a club.
A wooden train for my younger son that remains in the closet of his old
bedroom and could be hauled out for a photo if need be. Maybe photos of
it in an album that could be scanned. I am certain it long predates
digital cameras in our house.
A weather station - barometer, hygrometer etc for my sister made out of
a board from her first house.
Trivets (routed doodads to set a hot dish on) for each of the ladies in
the family - at least I assume that is who got the most of them. There
are, or at least were, not all that many men in the immediate family so
mostly given out to the ladies. There is one in the kitchen in a drawer
so again, I could take a photo.

Those are about all that I can think of for now. None have been done in
any recent years. Probably none in at least 10 to 15 years which is
almost hard for me to admit. I used to enjoy doing this sort of thing.

BTW, I assume, that if you look at the photos on photobucket of the

Feel free to do so. Some of the photos may make sense based on things I

Some won't and some are just photos I grabbed from somewhere else and
know little about.
But, if you see anything interesting and wish to know more, I will do my

Ruler added to illustrate size - about 7 or 8 cm = about 3 inches long.
Wood is fairly soft - not heavy.
Maybe pine?
Stained brown - bottom is lighter as I wore the stain off sliding it

Yep, a great piece; likely pine.

BTW, my car is 6½ inches long, 2 inches wide. I should have included

Ruler added to illustrate size - about 7 or 8 cm = about 3 inches long.
Wood is fairly soft - not heavy.
Maybe pine?
Stained brown - bottom is lighter as I wore the stain off sliding it
around on the floors when I was a fair bit younger than I am now.

[MBZ] OT - Model car

2014-12-17 Thread WILTON via Mercedes

We'd love to see it.

As I've said before, I never had any store-bought toys, except a very
small and flimsy tricycle and a small wagon of equally poor quality at
Christmas in 1940, when I was six. The tricycle and the wagon were way
too small for me and were broken and unusable less than an hour after I
took them outside. 'Ran over a piece of pine bark with front wheel of the
trike and broke the fork.

I carved many cars and boats from scraps of pine and thick pieces of pine
bark. 'Always borrowed Daddy's pocket knife for the carving - he was
always afraid I'd cut myself or lose his knife. 'Built several boats
powered by paddle wheels and rubber bands made from strips of discarded
tire inner-tubes.

'Also made little tractors from sewing thread spools, a stick, an old
piece of crayon (wax) and a thin strip of inner-tube rubber.

'Made many kites of newspaper and dried dog fennel "sticks" with strips of
rags for tail and cotton "tobacco twine," string normally used to attach
tobacco onto sticks to facilitate hanging them in the curing/drying barns.
Lash the two pieces of dog fennel together with string; run string around
perimeter of the "crossed" sticks; attach the paper to the cross by
folding edges of the paper over the perimeter string and glue the folded
paper edges onto the main body of paper with flour-and-water glue.

'Made several "baseballs" by winding tobacco twine tightly around a center
core of a "found" jack rock ball and covered with black cloth "electrical"
tape (long before plastic tape) or white "adhesive" tape. BTW, a rock was
too hard for the center core. 'Made/carved bats of hickory or other
hardwood as available.

'Carved a yo-yo at least once.

'Made several bows using whatever thin hardwood branches available at the
time. Dried dog fennels made satisfactory arrows, but were a bit light.

'Made many "bean" shooters using a forked piece of hardwood, two pieces of
inner-tube rubber and a small piece of old shoe leather. Acorns, greed
China berries and small, round rocks made adequate ammo.

'Never had a marble, except two or three found somewhere. 'Never
had/owned a comic book; never had a box of crayons nor a coloring book.
'Never had a cap gun/pistol nor an air rifle.

'Made many other toys and tools I can't remember right now. Though I
never had store-bought toys, my supply of toys and tools was limited by
only my imagination, ingenuity and ability to create or build whatever was
appropriate at the time.

Hey Wilton

My grandfather carved boats out of an old table leg when he was a young
fellow. I don't recall how old he was at the time but he had a collection
of them.
He lived in southern Ontario as a child and watched the ships go by from
the shore. He carved copies of some that he saw.
In his later years, he passed along these little ship models to the grand
children.
I was one of the younger boys and did not see him as often as some who
lived closer to him and as such, I got one of the little ones.
Some were much bigger. The one I got was only a couple of inches long.
Some were more like 6 inches long and much more elaborate if my memory is
accurate.
My grand father passed away in the mid 1960's and was 85 years old or
thereabouts when he died. I am guessing that these little ships were
carved sometime in the 1880's or 1890's.
I still have the one that I got, which is something of a miracle as I
recall playing with it as a child.

I will take a photo of it and post it.

When the moderator can't get an attachment through...

Speaking of winter deer, I had three run out in front of the van on
Monday. I slowed down when I saw the first, which threw the folks behind
me into a tizzy. If I'd been looking away for even a second I'd have
definitely plowed #3, and probably #2. Guess that's the down side of
moving to a gun-fearing place like Chapel Hill - in Durham some gangster
would have shot all three from his window before they got to the road.

In retrospect I vaguely would rather have had the insurance payout on the
van, but... probably not. :) Y'all drive safe out there!

Thanks Guys - Lots of great suggestions. IMO the restore is the biggest
concern - I was happy with Carbonite until I had to restore my email -
then it was not so easy.

Thanks Guys -

It is simple to restore. Just go to the date you want to restore,
find the files and drag them back to your HD (location you want them
to go) Same procedure for moving to a new machine.

Unfortunately, it does not provide offsite storage, and I don't think
it is available for winders or penguins.

Re: [MBZ] Here's One for Jaime!

2014-12-17 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Doesn't look bad! It's pretty rare to find these early cars in good shape.

I just bought a 79 240D with 100k miles that's in pretty good shape. Looks
to have been garaged it's whole life, has its original radio and even the
original license plate frames and screws.

I'll probabaly pass it along with my 83 300D I've had for a few years now.
Too many cars around here and I need space for the next project, whatever
that may be.

G: Good point. Problem is the only 100% American made car is the $100,000
Tesla, and even then the Tesla Company belongs to a guy from one or two of
those British possessions (South Africa? Canada?)
