Re: [MBZ] Fwd: MPG Champ: 1984 Chevy Chevette Diesel

2015-02-07 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Bought a NEW 1976 Chevette for $3600 and ran it daily until 1982, saving
enough to be able to purchase our first Mercedes (1973 280) for $4,700,
which I sold a year later for $4850. Those were the days of inflating
European car prices... I got $300 for the Chevette. Only problem with
that car was that the brake shoes wore out regularly and were Expensive to
fix.

Re: [MBZ] OT - FreeNAS

2015-02-07 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Here's an update on my WD NAS I set up a while ago. It has a Linux OS and runs
a two-core 1.2 GHz CPU, has 2 WD Red 4TB HDs (set up as a mirror RAID, so 4 TB
storage), 2 USB 3.0 ports, and is fanless; but seems to run cool. I'm not
smart enough to make much use of the onboard apps, But using Allway Sync from
my Win 7 desktop my incremental backups are fast and sure. It allows remote
access to the unit, so my distant adult kids can use it as cloud storage. The
unit cost not much more than the HDs alone, and I'm quite happy with it.

Subject: [MBZ] OT - FreeNAS

Decided to nuke my Windows 7 box and use it for a FreeNAS system. Blew it away
on Thursday after making sure there wasn’t anything of value on it (there
wasn’t) and installed FreeNAS.

Set FreeNAS up on the SSD and configured a single volume for a Time Machine AFP
volume. It was amazingly simple to set up and configure. Lots of goodies in
there that I won’t use but could be very useful for someone who is supporting a
lot if different platforms.

Works like a champ, MUCH faster than my crappy DLink MAS-345 NAS that I’ve not
been happy with. As a matter of fact, I think I’m going to pull a couple of
the drives out of the DLink and put them in the FreeNAS box to create another
volume for media streaming for the Apple TVs.

The Chevette had the aluminum cylinders, didn't it? When they first came on the
market, few mechanics thought the aluminum cylinders would last.

A friend of mine has a Ford-Mazda Tempo with 5sp, 2.0L diesel, brand new head
and
I believe he has a spare IP for it. It didn't swap after the head swap, we
always intended to pull start it but never got around to it. I think it got
around 56mpg on long trips at 55mph.

Mitch.

That mileage claim is not sustainable over a long term. I'd believe
50 MPG. Maybe a shade over at sustained 55 mph.

The head onmine was perfect after 112k miles. It had overheated a
few times at high elevations. The recalled head gasket lasted until
112 K. That makes it almost as good as an M103, which often made it
to 150k before bad leakage on the head gasket.

Wabbit, escort/tempo, shovitt all got around 50 MPG on the road. I
had Wabbit and escort.

I'd prefer a wabbit Dissel over the shovette In
fact the shoveitt was THE car that changed
chevrolet from chevy to Shovy or Shoveitt.

The Escort Dissel is better built than the
shoveitt. The Wabbit is better built than the
Escort.

Escort Dissel engine will outlast the body.
Shoveitts rarely got to 100k miles.

I can see where a shovy collector might want a

MPG Champ: 1984 Chevy Chevette Diesel

You may be surprised to know that there's some
serious bidding happening around one of
Chevrolet's most underwhelming creations from
the malaise era: a 1984 Chevy Chevette. But
this isn't your run-of-the-mill econo-hatchback
from hell. Among those who are in the know,
this cramped runabout is equipped with the rare
Isuzu-sourced diesel power plant mated to a
manual transmission. In this configuration,
these cars were capable of 45 m.p.g.'s around
town and upwards of 60 on the highway! You may
laugh in its humble face, but this little
Chevette spotted by Barn Finds reader Jim S.
here on eBay has reached $3,000 on a no-reserve
auction with 8 days left! Are you tempted?

Re: [MBZ] Installing HP Printer was Korean malware FIXED

Mine was the first with thunderbolt. 8,1. It is core i5 and shipped
with 10.6 discs.

Evertek had some 2009 Macbooks for $ 235 and $ 265 thursday.
tempting but no spare $...

Since I have access to Apple's tech support library, I checked and
found that the machine originally shipped with 10.5. It had been
upgraded at some point in its past.

It's the last of the C2D machines (2.4 GHz) and the first aluminum
bodied MacBook. There's a somewhat obscure EFI firmware update for
this machine that allows it to fully recognize a total of 8GB or
RAM, where earlier C2D and CD machines could only support a maximum
of 4GB.

Apply the firmware update and you've got a much better machine that
will support OSes up to and including Yosemite.

It will be here on Monday. I'm going to grab a 256GB SSD for it
this weekend and it will really rock once I get that installed.
