No, actually the modern version came about during WWI when factory
owners could run another hour in the summer on second shift without
using electric lighting. Of course they were running three shifts so
it made absolutely no difference anyway.

Re: [MBZ] Update XL: Shirley in a car wreck

2015-03-08 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Over the last couple years my 300D has become reluctant to start at
below zero temps. one or two cylinders fire right up, and if the
rest did like my old diesel did, it would take right off.

These days I have to keep cranking while it sputters and smokes,
eventually starting and running poorly, but this was a -8,

Engine now has at least 400,000 miles on it, and I suspect I need to
replace the pressure valve holder seals and probably need to check the
injectors, it always runs rather rough at idle and the nozzles have at
least 120,000 miles on them, possibly considerably more.

I think it would benefit from a new timing chain, too.

But it started and ran well at -8 with no block heater.

MTC brand, made in China?

Avoid problems, order from MB Classic Center, restore heat, you will need it
during the coming ice age.

If you have faith in global warming, get the MTC with five year warranty, which

Re: [MBZ] Aircraft sighting

2015-03-08 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

Starting today, at Casa Grande, AZ is the Annual Cactus Fly in. It will run
through Sunday.

The Arizona Wing of CAF [formerly known as Confederate Air Force, until the
era of "political correctness'] will be in attendance with a good sample of
it's collection of WW2 bombers and fighters.

For a price, you can purchase a seat and go for a ride.. For an even
greater price, you can take a turn in the co-pilot seat and actually be at
the controls [you will only fit in the seat after you remove your wallet
{trust me on this} ].

This airplane orgy usually brings a very fine sampling of the best antique
and special interest airplanes from many states, along with several
privately owned WW2 fighter aircraft, all in flying status.

Ð
These shots were taken at last years event, but give some example of what
you can walk up and touch [with owners permission of course].

Note the snow and ice, with heavy overcast "Arizona style" ;))

Grant...

Wish I could be there. 40 some years ago I
tried to figure out a way to get to be a gopher
for a crew at the reno air races to get close to
some of those birds and the people who flew them.
Never was successful. At that time, Bearcats
were the hot ride.

I did get to meet Pappy Boyington at Oshkosh in
1987. He was already in pretty bad shape then.

My 1983 300TD has very little heat, although the engine warms up to normal
levels even on cold days so itg's unlikely I have a thermostat problem.

At low speeds there is some tepid heat but once we start cruising on the
highway, the faster the speed the the colder it gets. Ordinarily I would
say this must be the monovalve except that the AC worked flawlessly right

While I really don't like bankers, I do like more light in the evening. I
also hate changing the clocks and having to adjust my schedule twice a
year. I vote to permanently implement the one hour ahead - make "high noon
sun time" happen at 1PM clock time. Of course, now that I'm retired and
don't keep any kind of regular schedule at all - the only effect I suffer
is that on those around me, like the other drivers, etc.

Re: [MBZ] Hi lift jack

2015-03-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
HA!
I'd said grease but Hi-Lift specifically recommends a light lubricating oil,
silicone or teflon spray. They also specifically say NOT motor oil although I
bet many a hi-lift has been lubed with motor oil.
I suspect it just ships with a little spray of WD-40 or some like to keep it
from rusting.
Sounds like the foot didn't work out, shoulda probably read the manual:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/A1veiEJCLxS.pdfthe foot slipping out is
probably the most common "oops" with them. I've seen people stand them in an
old wheel to stablize them. I keep a couple pieces of 2x12 maybe 18" long in
the truck when I'm carrying the jack.

Once he got a decent battery in it, my son's 190D started reliably in
Houghton, MI - on the UP - for two years. I'm sure it got plenty cold
there. I never had an issue with any of the OM60x engines at or a little
below 0F here. Mobil 1 is your friend (at the risk of starting another oil

I agree that given that you are moving soon, having one less car to move is
a plus. So glad to hear that Shirley is going to be OK - rolling a car is

Re: [MBZ] '85TD interior fan odd behavior

Also possible the brushes are worn. when the fan is off, (switch on)
and you go over a RR Track, does the fan come on sometimes? If so,
I'd change the brushes. If you drive with the switch on, and the
fan starts and stops randomly, it can be brushes, or PBU.

The controller is probably going bad (or is bad I guess), bad solder
joints or connections or switches or something. The repeat turning
on aspect might just be happenstance that it decides to work at some
point.

Re: [MBZ] OT Temporal Discontinuity

2015-03-08 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I live in Arizona, where the sun shines on average 360 days out of the
year. Arizona does not have daylight savings. Our Legislature was wise
enough to understand that we have enough sunshine and we have no need to
"save it"..

I personally note that "Daylight Savings" is a government program, which
has been "saving daylight" now for several decades with nothing to show for
it.

If it were a private enterprise, the daylight "saved" would be sold back
during the long dark winter hours in the frozen northeast to those vitamin
D deprived souls only getting 4 hrs of weak sun per day, or to melt snow
instead of rust cars with salt infused roads, or some other useful purpose.

If the government actually saved daylight, it would have devised some
"national sun energy reserve" managed by Dept of Energy, where you could
apply for sunlight allotments, or some other scheme.. Then, of course,,,
there would be a "sunshine tax".. have to tax it.. right?

Well.. let me just close with the comment that the government ordered
daylight savings should be put where the sun doesn't shine..

[Had to work for that one.. didn't I .. ;)) ]

Re: [MBZ] Update XL: Shirley in a car wreck

2015-03-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Any 60x engine should start well below zero. I've never figured out how cold it
has to be before a 190D won't start. I've had 'em start easily at -10F. I've
started my '98 Jetta at -16F and although I had to wait for a long time for the
glow plugs it started right up no problem. I'd suggest any diesel in that age
range should start right up in the cold.

Re-taking the thread to talk about our car situation :-) :

I had been thinking of another late W124 (I have a set of 15" rims I got
from Kaleb and could get the 16" rims off our '95 E320 -- if they are not
bent).

I also thought of an '84 or '85 300SD.

I would be open to a W140, given Dan's positive comments on the series
(and, hopefully, his advice on fixing one).

I'm not sure I would want a W210, since we will be moving to the Rust
Belt in northern Indiana.

Also, since we will be where it gets COLD, I'm thinking our next car
should run on gasoline, unless a diesel can be started when it's cold.
One advantage, though, is that Elkhart is close to water, so it won't get
quite as bitterly cold as, say, Montana or Minnesota.

With the number of things we need to do before the end of the month when
we need to be out of our home, I'm thinking of delaying the acquisition
of another Mercedes until after we move. And I'm still in the process of
getting our truck repaired (which is why Shirley was coming down to
Albuquerque to pick me up). I need to go down to Albuquerque (~ 2 hours
one way) early this week to retrieve our personal items from our E320 and
then go talk with people about trailers and tires for them.

[MBZ] OT Temporal Discontinuity

2015-03-08 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Is anyone else totally ferklempt with the DST time change thing? Does
anyone else find this whole business completely stupid and bothersome?

I grew up in Indiana, the time never changed so in the winter we were on
Central Time and in the summer we were on Eastern time, or maybe the
other way around, I forget, doesn't matter anyway. No one ever had an
issue with it. Then I moved to places where the time changes and
everyone I know complains about it. That is my anecdotal survey of the
stupidity of it.

That sort of thing is pretty scary, glad she has emerged mostly
functional. A testament I guess to a car that is 20 years old, and the
engineering in it. Not sure I would want to be in some other 20 yr old
vehicle and do that, though my truck is a 96 and I drive that. Hope I
never have the chance to test its integrity in that fashion.

Maybe Kleb can give you a coupla $100 for the hulk, use the bits to fix

She was driving our '95 E320 (the one I bought from Snook). I haven't
seen it, but was told it was rolled multiple times, so I cannot see how
it won't be totaled.

I guess I won't be needing the passenger side mirror from you anymore. :-)

I also won't have to change the transmission fluid, fix the emergency
blinker, or buy new tires for it.

We had a flat tire while we were in Carlsbad and I almost bought a new
set for the car since the Nokian WRG2 tires are down to the wear bars --
having to wait a day for the tire store to get them from Albuquerque or
El Paso stopped that, thankfully.

diesel and it does drive very nice. Shifts good, suspension feels good.
Interior in good shape. Has a few dings here and there. Clean carfax.

She's banged up, bruised, and sore, but is OK.

I am really jonesing for an early E55, like a 2000 or 2001. There’s one I like
in Portland (OR), but it’s on the high end of my budget and it would cost me
another $1000 to get it here.

There was one in town I wanted to look at, but the guy got in a wreck and it
was totaled out.

These are even harder to find than a nice S500.

You should forget about another 140 and try a 210. While I agree the 140 is
very nice, the 210 is a decent modern car that are much easier to find.

Maybe commission Donald Snook or Kaleb to find a nice 140 sedan? Perhaps

nice examples start at about $14k or so. More and better safety features,
which may be attractive to you.

Black socks with sandals! And don't forget to schedule your haircut,
doctor visit, bank visit, grocery run, pharmacy run, and other errands
on different days so you have something to do, just enough to justify
the nap after the errands.

I told my kids if I ever get to that point they have my permission to
take me out to the woods and tie me to a tree. It's in my living will.

I remain convinced that the time SWMBA was forced off the freeway
in the SL, had she been in the X5 it would have rolled. The 107
is low, wide, and heavy, and did not flip. There was a lot of
crap wedged between the tires and the rims, and a water jug in
the trunk was split. Lot of sideways forces at play there,
she did a 360 before coming to a stop. Much prefer yaw to
roll!

I just brought this home:

A 1985, 240k miles... a bit high for my tastes, but its second

the car in 1990 and has always serviced it at the dealer. Its
had lots of
work done and really drives nicely. Of course, a few things
to sort out

terms of rust,
always garaged in NYC.

concerned that the bushings were too far gone and would not even allow the

Well, I should have pushed him to at least try to align the car. I sprayed
some PB Blaster on all the nuts / bolts that needed to come loose, and then
proceeded to try some of the nicer looking examples on the right side. I
found that both inner bushings concentric adjustment bolts were loose. The
bolt for the rear bushing was REALLY loose and could easily move all over
the place. Clearly the last alignment tech had not properly torqued them,
and so they came loose and subsequently the front end went out of alignment.

They did look awful (the outer visible edge that is), and I'd already
purchased new bushings from the MB Classic Center ($137 per side for the
kit which included new bushings and the replacement one-time-use nuts), so
I decided to proceed. After another few hours and using Rich's spring
compressor and a sawz-all clone from Harbor Freight, I had both bushings
out. Internally, they looked (and probably worked) fine. The rubber had
plenty of life to it, and there was no corrosion at all inside the sleeves
of the lower control arm.

I'm going to wire-wheel the rust off the outside of the control arm, get
some black rustoleum paint on it, and put her all back together. Probably
finish up right side next weekend, unless I get some time after work this
coming week.

I’ve had folks on the prowl for a nice W140 sedan of late without a lot of

is a really, really nice S500 in Naples I want but I’m not keen about driving
2+ hours to look at it, as it’s at a dealership…

Craig,

Have you started thinking about a replacement for the car yet?

Maybe commission Donald Snook or Kaleb to find a nice 140 sedan? Perhaps leap
forward to a 2005 E-class CDI, with a straight six engine? I think nice
examples start at about $14k or so. More and better safety features, which may
be attractive to you.
