[MBZ] Unique transmission

2015-10-24 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

Here is a unique transmission/driveline system that seems difficult to explain.
Following these links is an owners comment. Can anyone on the list offer a
better explanation of how it works?

My favorite transmissions are the fully synchronized 4 or 5 speeds
used in MBs of the 60s through the 80s or more.almost never need
repair unless abused by running with no oil or being filled with 90
weight trans grease.

Re: [MBZ] Unique transmission

2015-10-24 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
The best analogy I can think of would be if you had an automatic transmission
with one planetary gear set, and made the case of that transmission into an
eclectic motor/generator. Add another electric motor around the driveshaft,
between the "transmission" and the differential. Now you can drive the rear
axle with just the electric motor around the driveshaft, or use the
motor/generator "transmission" to allow the engine to add power to the
driveshaft, and get the "CVT" control by using electronics to control the
rotational speed of the motor generator "transmission". As you change the
rotating speed of the "transmission" (or even change the direction of its spin)
you can get CVT performance forward or reverse.

Is the culture capable of accepting the type of motivation that
Speaker Wilton would offer? My impression is that the culture really
does not listen or hear. Perhaps if Speaker Wilton does a series of
videos at youtube, we might be better able to conserve Wilton for us

whomever here and perhaps more persons that need the motivation might
be watching Speaker Wilton at youtube? We gotta think like the

And it appears that you cannot transmit motive power from the IC engine to the
wheels without powering the 'transmission motor' with electricity. I suppose
that explains the comparatively abysmal highway MPG of this system.

Karl,

I don’t want to sound d*ckish, but why are you cutting corners on a job that
involves easily 20+ hours of work? OK, so you maybe save $200 on an evaporator.

Until you have to take it out in a couple of years when it fails.

You’re saving some serious coin by doing this yourself, I presume. Buy an OE
part and be satisfied that it’s right. I would not roll the dice on something
like this.

Don't install an evaporator with copper pipes, those are the ones that
fail at the crimp joint between copper and aluminum core!

This is a bear of a job, one I've done once and need to do again (not
on the same car).

Do it right, you do NOT want to do it twice, believe me. Took me
three days.

Re: [MBZ] w124 dash & evapectomy

2015-10-24 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

Karl,

I don't want to sound d*ckish, but why are you cutting corners on a
job that involves easily 20+ hours of work? OK, so you maybe save
$200 on an evaporator.

Until you have to take it out in a couple of years when it fails.

You're saving some serious coin by doing this yourself, I presume.
Buy an OE part and be satisfied that it's right. I would not roll
the dice on something like this.

Back to the books,

Dan

I agree in principle, but in this case, the original does not have a
stellar history. At any rate, I think 4 seasons is reputable.

The original MB part number from 1986, 1987 etc was NOT reliable or
reputable. By the time they got to the xxx xxx 07 xx part,
presumably they had fixed it 7 times. (or at least switched
suppliers)

4 seasons makes most of the automotive heat/AC parts used in the US
of A for repairs, including repair parts for some of the
manufacturers. So IF you went to a stealer, you might end up with a
4 seasons evap anyway, depending on what vehicle you have. (I'm
guessing MB does not use 4 seasons for ersatzteile)

Crock auto is $76.79 for the 4 seasons evap. I sure would NOT buy
one from fleabay when crockauto is so much cheaper. At least
crockauto will stand behind it to some extent. Fleabay won't.
Crockauto has a listing for Behr/Hella, but it sez "out of stock."
If we were to call crockauto, it may be possible to have them get a
Behr.

In this case, when the factory evap has a history of failure, I think
I'd call 4 seasons and see if I could talk to the engineers. I'm
guessing they are well aware of the OE failures (prob'ly 90% or more
by now) and can tell us how theirs are better than even the 07
version of the OE evap. (or maybe tell us that the 07 version is
made by them...)

Note from Larry: the new evaporator should be pressurized with nitrogen, which
