Northeast peach crops decimated by Valentine's coldPublished: Monday, May

In mid-February, the majority of the peach crop in the Northeast was
destroyed by subzero temperatures. One fruit tree expert is calling the
incident the Valentine's Day massacre of peach blooms.

New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts lost 90 percent
or more of the peach crop, according to specialists.

Through a combination of the February freeze and a cold spell in early
April, the Hudson River Valley lost 90 percent of its crop, according to
Dan Donahue, commercial fruit tree specialist with the Cornell Cooperative
 Extension.

"That Valentine's Day massacre really did us in," said Mary Concklin, fruit
tree expert with the University of Connecticut cooperative extension. "So
much for that peach cobbler this summer."

New Jersey lost about 40 percent of its crop in the southern region of the
state, where 4,500 acres of peach trees are located.

"This is not just a local event," said George Hamilton, field specialist
for the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension in Hillsborough
County. "We're seeing it all over the Northeast. The crop in the Hudson
River Valley and other places in the Northeast got hammered" (Lynne Tuohy,

Re: [MBZ] OT: Peach crop wiped out I NE States

2016-05-09 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
You can loose a peach crop several ways. If it gets too cold too
early, you kill the buds. If it gets too cold at the coldest part of
winter, it will kill the buds. If it starts to get warmer, then
turns very cold, it can kill the buds. And, if the buts are breaking
or if the tree is in blossom and you get a hard freeze, it kills the
blossoms. THe exact temperatures for each killing temp at each stage
varies by variety and by the temp history of the fall/winter up to
the date in question. From bud break until the fruit is set, the
tolerable temp changes every day. If you are in an area that grows
a lot of peaches, the Extension Hort guy should have the temps and
descriptions of each stage. Even then, microclimates can make it
hard to predict. some varieties are more or less tolerent of the
cold. In general the "Fiery"

varieties of peaches tolerate cold better than other commercial varieties.

In general, if the temp hits 20 below, you won't have a peach crop.
By blossom time, temps as high as 28-29 or 30 can cause crop loss.

In 1940 (11-11-1940) the temp dropped something like 70 degrees in a
couple hours in the midwest. This radical temp change to well below
freezing caused the water in the tree to freeze, expand and it popped
the bark off the limbs, killing the trees. It was devastating. For
example in 1939 or 1940, Iowa was #3 in the USA for apple production.
(Far above its "children" Washington and Oregon.) in 1941, the state
was pretty much off the map, there were so few producing trees that
survived.

For alleged peach lovers Fred, Dimitri, Curt et al:

Northeast peach crops decimated by Valentine's coldPublished: Monday, May
9, 2016

River Valley and other places in the Northeast got hammered" (Lynne Tuohy,
AP/*Boston Globe*
,
May 7).

have dissimilar metals, galvanic corrosion, oxidation etc. And in
the worst cases, little cups that hold water to increase the

always gets in.

Oh man, might as well open the oil debate, at least we've been

I'd suggest if you make a good Western Union joint soldering is as

a good crimp joint is forever.

The effort makes it taste twice as good.

Last night I made some fava beans, the last the farmstand had. The guy
there who cooks a lot of interesting things told me how to cook them.
Shuck the beans, which took forever as there were only 3-4 beans in a
pod. Then boil them for 3 min, easy part. Then dump them in ice water
to stop cooking. Then you have to shuck the beans from a skin around
them, which took twice forever. Then saute them a bit in a pan with
some garlic, onion, whatever. Turns out they were not particularly
special, they tasted OK but not worth the time and effort. I do have
lots of stuff for the compost bin though.

[MBZ] OT - but so very funny

2016-05-09 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I just had to share this from the Washington post. Peter Chang is
supposedly THE best Chinese restaurant in the DC area, but their serves
could use some basic IT training.

Servers trash customers in private note on check — then forget to delete it
By Tim Carman May 9 at
12:58 PM

Four diners, three of them wearing plaid, were ready to enjoy a meal
Saturday night at Peter Chang in Arlington ,
the authentic Sichuan outpost opened by the Chinese embassy chef turned
serial restaurateur
.
But the dinner took a left turn when the server brought out a family-style
bowl of rice.

The offending check at Peter Chang in Arlington, courtesy of a diner.

One of the diners, who had lived in Beijing for much in the 2000s, was
surprised by the rice presentation and made a comment to the server, saying
"'Oh, you guys don't serve them in individual rice bowls?'," related
another diner in the party, who asked to go by his first name,*Matt*.

The server told the group that when rice is served to three or more diners
at Peter Chang, it comes in a large bowl. The former Beijing resident
thought that was odd, considering the family-sized portion ran counter to
the personalized bowls he encountered in China. The server then asked if
the foursome would like individual rice bowls instead. They declined.

*[Peter Chang restaurant review: A master's cooking, times two
]*

"She said, 'No, no, I can bring it for you,'" Matt related. "He said, 'No,
no, don't worry about it. It's fine. Just wanted to let you know that's the
way it's done in China. It's not a big deal.' . . . It just got really
awkward."

The diners thought that was the end of the episode until it came time to
pay. The group asked to split the check four ways, to which the
server apparently said, "That's totally how they do it in China."

"I obviously had no idea what that meant, because I'm just a white guy from
Arlington," Matt said. "But my friend from China, he told us after she
left, 'In China, one person pays for it. That's not at all the way things
are done in China, so she's being sarcastic.' Then we saw the receipt."

At the bottom of check were two comments, each obviously typed into the
system from the restaurant's point-of-sale, or POS, system. The first: "im
a plad a--." The other: "i have a small penis."

The former comment, despite misspelling "plaid," was clearly a shot at the
diner's attire. The second, a cheap shot, period. The diners were not
amused and immediately summoned a manager. The manager, in turn, summoned
the server and another server who had apparently typed the comments into
the system. The manager apologized and explained the servers were just
joking with one another via the POS system. They meant to delete the
comments before presenting the check.

It'd be easy to tell, peaches here are really small, more like apricots...

Are these the white peaches that grow so fast the pits are shattered? We

No they are your regular peaches, with kinda pointy ends. Not
freestones. They are not particularly soft but even sorta hard they are
ripe and juicy and sweet. They would probably make good pies.

Northeast peach crops decimated by Valentine's coldPublished: Monday, May
9, 2016

River Valley and other places in the Northeast got hammered" (Lynne Tuohy,
AP/*Boston Globe*
,
May 7).

My dad had a stroke some years ago so could not walk really well. I
would occasionally take him to Walsmark on little expeditions to get him
out of the ALC. They had carts there. The problem was that due to his
stroke he couldn't really assimilate stuff he would see on his left
side, but that did not stop him from ripping off on the cart. I had to
try to keep up with him to keep him from banging into stuff, it was hard
to do.

Re: [MBZ] fuel cans - spouts

2016-05-09 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
When I was a poor college student at UW Madison, I ran out of gas just a
couple blocks from a gas station, so I hiked over to get some gas. I found
that either the city or the state has passed a law outlawing the practice
of gas stations loaning out gas cans to stranded motorists. Apparently one
too many WI citizens had removed themselves from the gene pool, spilling
gasoline and then catching fire, so they passed a law to "fix that".
Result: all gas stations sold gas cans, so I had to spend a few bucks
(precious funds better spent on beer) to purchase a gas can and then a buy
the gallon of gas to get rolling again. I'm sure that this law prevented
all future self-immolation eventsor maybe it just enriched gas station
owners?

River Valley and other places in the Northeast got hammered" (Lynne Tuohy,
AP/*Boston Globe*
,
May 7).

Contrary to the royal edicts of the Peoples Republic of Kookifornia, you
can not legislate common sense.

Recently, I stopped to assist a motorist at the side of the road.. they had
run out of gas. This was apparently a common event because they had a spare
gas container in the trunk, with gas in it.. It had no nozzle, and the cap
was loose and leaking. As soon as the trunk opened you could almost see the
fuel fumes coming out.

The agitated woman driver very belligerently advised me she didn't need any
help and could handle it, so I stepped back and watched as she tried to
pour fuel from the Blitz container, with no nozzle, directly into the fill
port... drenching herself in gas and the side of the car, with a puddle
under the side of the car..
[Hey.. it's cheaper than renting a three stooges movie, right?]

Scratch one set of nice shoes and a business dress. I noted a wedding ring,
so I sent up a prayer for the poor devil who wakes up to her each morning..
and again offered to help.. which was now accepted, with a lecture about
how she was late for work anyway..

I just happen to carry a spare Blitz fill nozzle in my truck tool box, with
an attached flex hose reducer to fill generator tanks [small fill port
size]... Installed same, put fuel in tank.. started car.. woman drove
off... leaving the spare Blitz fuel tank setting at side of road.. I
collected it.. and continued on my way.

I do so hope she has some other talents besides operating machinery.. ;))
The country phrase that covers her is, "She couldn't pour pizz out'ta a
boot if the instructions were written on tha heel."

The camera has motion detection mode, so it can be set to turn on any time
it detects motion, and the threshold for the trigger is variable.

I do not think power consumption is low enough to keep the ccd or whatever

Re: [MBZ] Ideas?

2016-05-09 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Hell I can get dad to bring the .577-450 and see how 400 grains of soft lead
does...
Some friends had an argument about .223 vs 7.62x39 for zombie killing when I
suggested I'd grab the Sharps in .50-70. I'm pretty good with it out to about
200 yards. In a real zombie apocalypse I'd want something I could really make
my own reloads on...

[MBZ] W126 Console Wanted

2016-05-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I may have posted this previously, but I'm looking for a nice center console
for a W126.

The stereo that's installed was done by someone with a Sawzall and they
literally carved out the supports for the radio and ash tray.

Gray or black preferred, but I can paint anything with vinyl paint so color
isn't critical as long as it's in good shape.

Thanks,

Dan

I'd suggest if you make a good Western Union joint soldering is as good as
anything.on the other handIf you've got a good proper crimp tool and not one of
them crap things they see at the autoparts store a good crimp joint is forever.
Of course most of the automotive yahoos can't find their butt with both hands...

Re: [MBZ] '07 E320CDI

2016-05-09 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Oh man, I gotta tell you about this:
My grandmother is 96, she's been living in assisted living for about 15 years
now since my grandfather passed. Recently her knee is playing her up so she's
got one of them rolling walkers. Her room is way down at the end of the hall
and recently we found out that what she's been doing is sitting on the walker
and dragging herself down the hallway...
So now she's got an electric scooter but lord above she was hell on wheels when
she still drove the car, we're all pretty scared about her running that
scooter. My uncle put a rubber band in the controls to limit how fast we can
do. He's gonna check it pretty frequently, don't want her getting into trouble
if that band gets loose.

'Just worked out a way to put walker (some call it rollerator) and elec.
scooter in trunk of Schwartze when necessary - 2 pass. in back.  Not as easy
as in 124 but doable.  Scooter in 4 parts always goes in trunk; walker
normally goes immediately behind driver seat, folded and standing on it's
wheels in passenger foot well (on other side when I'm "playing" passenger.

You might pair them up with these tiny $30 compute-on-a-pc-board. Solid state would be better but yours would be much cheaper. I read where you can do a lot with the tiny boards; automation, robots, etc.

So it seems at least one new beetle Diesel has covered 250k and the
owner is still happy.

Everyone told me soldering wires in a car was sacrilege!

I have always soldered everything. You just want to
make sure that vibration isn't flexing the joint.
All of those wonderful large connectors in MB from
the 'good years' are soldered, inside.

[MBZ] vw dissel

2016-05-09 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

A report from the field from SWMBO:

"Remember one time early on when I started to work for the LA dept
one of the students had a new VW bug...one of the new models? Up
until that time she drove her mom's old model MB although I do not
think I knew her very well at that point. Anyway she graduated in
2001 or 2002. Before she graduated she gave me a ride in her new bug
with the moon roof etc. because I told her I liked it. Well she
posted a photo of her odometer and it now has 250,000 miles on it.
She said she and her parents went for a test drive in it 15 years ago
and it had 11 miles on it. She still loves the car. I also
remember it was a diesel and I had a diesel in the design parking
lot."

So it seems at least one new beetle Diesel has covered 250k and the
owner is still happy.

You just might catch the guy who keys your paint or does a parking lot hit and run. Alternately, I'd like to see one that you could plug into an American style outlet (always on),and record while the car is running, for example, when voltage is over 13. Mitch.

Err, um... Yeah. 190 - 175 = 15.

Thanks Craig. *smile*

Continuing from my previous research, I built a chart of
showing the DIN and EN numbers as well as the BCI. I have
failed to figure out why there are two DIN numbers...

NOTE 1: all of these batteries are 175 mm wide, so I did not
list that dimension.

NOTE 2: The batteries with a "b4" holddown may be a problem
for 123 cars. I don't know the clamping range of the
factory clips.

NOTE 3: This chart is in the same order as the last listing -
descending volume as calculated from the maximum
exterior dimensions. With all else equal, greater
volume should equal greater capacity - unless the
calculated volume does not compare to the internal
volume.

| BCI |DIN| EN | length | height | Holddown |
|-+-+-+--+++--|
| 49 | H8 | L5 | 88L5 |354 |190 | b3 |
| 93 | T8 | LB5 | 88LB |354 |175 | b3 |
| 94R | H7 | L4 | 77L4 |315 |190 | b3 |
| 92 | T7 | LB4 | 77LB |315 |175 | b3 |
| 98R | H6 | 3 | 66L3 |283 |190 | b4 |
| 48 | H6 | L3 | 66L3 |278 |190 | b3 |
| 41 | T65 | | 54LB |293 |175 | b4 |
| 40R | T6 | LB3 | 66LB |278 |175 | b1 |
| 91 | T6 | LB3 | 66LB |278 |175 | b3 |
| 97R | H5 | L6 | |252 |190 | b4 |
| 47 | H5 | L2 | 55L2 |242 |190 | b3 |
| 96R | | | |242 |175 | b5 |
| 90 | T5 | LB2 | 45LB |242 |175 | b3 |
| 42 | T5 | LB2 | 45LB |242 |175 | b4 |
| 67R | | | |132 |176 | b2 |
| 99R | T4 | LB1 | 36LB |210 |175 | b3 |

Holddowns
b1 - 10.5 mm high, long side only
 b2 - ?? high, short side only
b3 - 10.5 mm high on long and short sides
b4 - 19.0 mm high, long side only
