[MBZ] Rolling, Rolling, Rolling.....

2017-08-14 Thread redghost--- via Mercedes
The OM617 had been sitting on the hoist, blocking my garage door for the past
week. I had tried to use a garbage harbour fright dolly, but it just shattered
when the engine was lowered on to it.

I made my own out of a few scrap 2x14 and some 2x6. HF got the trashed dolly
and I got some spare cash out of it. I purchased their 5.25" casters for my
wheels. Once all bolted up, I rolled the thing under the now raised motor and
learned it would slide just over the legs! Dropped it down and pulled the dolly
away. That was totally cool. I pulled the SL out of the garage and grunted
enough to get the dolly, with motor, tucked against the wall with enough room
to pull a car in alongside.

I am happy.

The local show and shine was yesterday. I took Polei, but garnered no awards.
The fellow I sold a Hirschmann to a few weeks back did win the B class
(1980-1999) second place. I got him to sign up when I helped him install the
antenna, which gave him two weeks to make his 560SEL into a very lovely example
of the Marque.

Photos of Polei will be posted to BW.

Re: [MBZ] OT cpap machines

2017-08-14 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
If you get one with good data logging, you can view the results on a computer.
Like my Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset.

If it senses and responds to your Apnea/Hypoapnea events, you can adjust the
prescription over time for the best results. I was prescribed 9-12 CM of water
for pressure levels. I ended up setting it as a CPAP instead of an autopap, 7cm
works perfectly for me. When I went in for my 3 month checkup and they took the
SD card out of my machine, the doctor came in a while later, and said "has
anybody changed the settings on your machine?"
(you can see every RX change and when it was made, and I'd made a lot of them
as I was zeroing in on the best pressure).
I told him that twice in the first week I woke up with the pressure at 12, my
mouth open, air rushing in my nose and out my mouth, none going to my lungs,
feeling like I was going to die. After the 2nd time I lowered the max pressure
out of self defense. He just said it looked like it was working great where I
had it set, he wished every patient was that engaged in their treatment.

If you travel a lot, it's good to have a small machine, like mine.
If you sleep away from the power grid, it's good to have one that runs on 12v,
unlike mine which runs on 24 volt and needs a power adapter to run off a car
battery.

Back in October, my machine was considered the best one on the market. Well,
the AS 10 for her is slightly better, it has his and hers modes, some people,
male and female, get better results with the female response curves, the normal
model just has the manly mode, the female model (white instead of black
housing) has both modes and costs the same.
If you want a specific machine, just have your Dr prescribe that exact thing.
My Rx is for an auto responding machine with data logging, and my DME (durable
medical equipment supplier) supplied me with the exact machine I was going to
ask them for (I didn't know about the for her model then).

My dad got a new machine last month, he has Cheney-Stokes and had a $3900 VPAP,
his new one is a special version of my machine that's a step above VPAP but
only costs about $1700.

Mine is price-fixed at $883, but if your insurance isn't paying for the whole
thing you can find demos/open box/etc for around $500. My insurance pays the
DME $76 a month for ten months on a rent to own plan, after ten months I own
it. Final payment should have been a couple of weeks ago, I suppose I should
call them and verify it's mine now.
They're supposed to supply everything needed to keep it running while I'm
renting it, but the jerks would only give me what the insurance company will
let them bill extra for, they wanted me to pay them for air filters because
they were supposed to be included in the rent but they wanted to be paid extra
for them, so I just bought extra filters online. If my insco wasn't paying less
than list for the thing I would have made an official complaint over trying to
bill me for filters.

I found a vacuum hose underneath the area where the cruise actuator
mounts that was loose. I reconnected it and the shifts are better.

No, it's a function of the topography of the hill, with its constantly
varying slope. The car has enough power in fourth to go up a part of the
hill until the slope increases, which requires a downshift to third.
Then, when the slope decreases, it upshifts to fourth and continues on
until the slope increases again.

So, is that a design flaw or the result of making less power than when new?
If an auto trans shifts up when current power demand is more than what's
available in the next gear, it's flawed.

Yes, it will if I engage the kickdown switch. But then when the slope

I have to engage the kickdown switch again. That repeats several times

Or you know the car will downshift, so you're trying to save wear on the trans

Yeah I do believe it is Sun Valley.

As for having to manually down shift. Doesn't the transmission do
that for itself? If it didn't I would have looked at that a long
time ago. With my 123's going up a hill if I want to go faster I
just push harder on the peddle. It will either go faster in
fourth or downshift and go faster. Might be that there was
something wrong with it for a long time and is finally letting
you know that it's time to get a rebuilt?

Is that the big hill on that multilane highway (40?) going east
from Albuquerque? I don't remember having much of a problem going
up that in June's 4cyl pickup. Course that was a few years ago
and we only went up that twice I think. I probably forgot about
it slowing down, but then again I did have to keep up with John
who was driving his V10 diesel Turag so we were probably doing
around 70 or more. He loves pushing that thing.

I understand. Thank you for your effort to help me.

Does anyone know if Craig's car has the electronic part in the
transmission? If so could it be a problem in that part? If not
then trying to break loose a stuck valve may work. My thought is
that if this was an isolated first time thing of doing a manual
downshift then there might have been some crud broken loose in
the valve body that is keeping one or more of the valves from
operating the way they should because it got jammed.

No, I regularly down-shifted the transmission manually, particularly when
going up that specific hill.

You might try hand shifting up and down doing the shifts at first at
lower RPMs and then if that doesn't work run the snot out of it and
make it shift only at the upper limit of the shift range both up
and down. The faster the engine turns, the more pressure builds
up and sometimes stuck valves will come loose when the harder
shock of that high RPM shift hits them. If nothing else works
that might. If not then it may need to have the valve body come
out and be gone through.

Oh.

Another thought is to try calling the guys in California and see
what they have to say.

That did come to mind. Sun Valley, isn't it?

Thanks Gang! You've given me some detective work to do! I am getting
better and can stand a bit now using my walker. I'll see what I can
find during the next few days -

Max - re- pulling a vacuum on the shutoff valve - maybe I looked at it
wrong in the past but I always found it hard to track any vac lines near
the shutoff valve except for the ones on the side between the shutoff
and the windscreen washer fluid reservoir. The vac lines on the top/rear
are so crammed in they're hard to work with.

But ya know, it just dawned on me, last Dec I had some problems with my
GPs - also had difficulty installing the manifold and getting good
electrical to the GPs. I recall removing the manifold again and
reinstalling it so I would be sure to get the stands set properly.
Maybe that's when I disturbed the Vacuum Lines??

Sound familiar? ;-)

Bad servo on the IP (or broken line between switch and servo)

Bad column switch (very rare, I've only seen one and that was on my brother '75

Typically you will find a cracked hard plastic line, they get really brittle.
Often get broken when you do something on the IP side of the engine, like

Door locks are a separate circuit powered by a pump under the rear seat, no
need to look there.

Check under the hood that the vacuum connections are all in place. I believe
there is a vacuum diagram on a sticker on the radiator support.

How well do the brakes work?

Vacuum shut off valve working? Your mouth should provide enough suction to
pull the stop lever down.

Re: [MBZ] More problems ...

2017-08-14 Thread MG via Mercedes
OK Do you normally do a manual downshift on that hill or was this
something that you did because the engine wasn't putting out
enough power this time vs doing ok all the other times till this
time?

Not really any help in fixing your transmission problem but
trying to get all the info I can.

Does anyone know if Craig's car has the electronic part in the
transmission? If so could it be a problem in that part? I not
then trying to break loose a stuck valve may work. My thought is
that if this was an isolated first time thing of doing a manual
downshift then there might have been some crud broken loose in
the valve body that is keeping one or more of the valves from
operating the way they should because it got jammed. You might
try hand shifting up and down doing the shifts at first at lower
RPMs and then if that doesn't work run the snot out of it and
make it shift only at the upper limit of the shift range both up
and down. The faster the engine turns, the more pressure builds
up and sometimes stuck valves will come loose when the harder
shock of that high RPM shift hits them. If nothing else works
that might. If not then it may need to have the valve body come
out and be gone through.

Another thought is to try calling the guys in California and see
what they have to say.

I'd love to pick up a Cayman some day, those are truly gorgeous. Years ago
I knew a fellow who picked up an early Boxster very cheap because it had
several nearly invisible paint flaws the drove the perfectionist original
owner nuts. They were only visible in bright sunlight, but totally ruined
the car for the guy. IIRC the car was two or three years old and the price
was like $15k for a car that was $50k new or somesuch. I was truly shocked
and immediately petitioned the Chairman of the Finance Committee for money
to get mine, but got nowhere. Recently a neighbor bought one for about $4k
I think, it had major paint issues but otherwise was very nice. Looked
like it was never washed or waxed and left out until the clear coat failed.

Seems that these were popular in Egypt for some reason. Considering the way
people drive there, I can sort of understand it.

Re: [MBZ] More problems ...

2017-08-14 Thread MG via Mercedes
Please describe "the engine stopped running correctly". Just loss
of power or actually misfiring and dropped cylinders?

MG

Craig via Mercedes wrote:

Shirley and I were driving back from Albuquerque in the '90 E300D and
about to ascend a hill at 65 mph, so I moved the transmission from D to 3.
Suddenly, the engine stopped running correctly and had little power and I
couldn't get the transmission to work correctly.

I got off I-40 and drove to a nearby filling station. The engine seemed
to run OK and the fuel gauge was not showing the reserve light, so I
drove the rest of the way home on Route 66. I noticed the engine ran OK
going down hills, but had difficulty going up hills.

I recalled the color of the prefilter being dark, so I thought maybe it
had plugged with bugs growing in the fuel tank.

Just a little while ago, I changed the prefilter and took it for a test
drive. The engine seems to have normal power (I don't have any hills
around here to check that out), but the transmission wasn't working
properly.

When starting out from a stop with the transmission in "D", it starts out
in third gear, even when I engage the kickdown switch.

I can make it start out in first and second by moving the lever to "2"
and the car starts briskly.

When driving 40 mph in fourth gear, I can make it go to third gear by
engaging the kickdown switch, so that seems to work.

Any ideas what is wrong?

Thanks,

Craig

What were they new 30 years ago, $100?

Nowadays, $1000 for a 2' long piece of plastic reflector seems outlandish.
But, hey, it's perfectly contoured to match the ridges in the taillamp lenses.

Mitch.
