So the tires on this 240d look practically brand new. They have been
on the car in the guys shop the whole time. They show no signs of rot
or cracking. The car feels like it’s going to fly apart though. I put
the first one on my balancer and it was way out of balance. When it
rotates I can see what must be the flat spot. Am I crazy and stupid
for rebalancing them and trying them back on the car to see if they
straighten out?

What lubricant do I use for the speedometer cable (I was told that was
the source of the howling/screeching I had observed)?
You want a wet or dry graphite lube, or a molybdenum lube, Lock-eze is
a good place to start.

How does one tell speedometer screeching versus speedometer cable
screeching?
Replace one and see if it works. Get a stethoscope with a long probe
and lay upside down in the passenger seat and probe the cable and head
while someone else drives? Or get a couple glue on microphones, stick
one on the speedo head on a one on the speedo cable casing and see which
one squeals louder as you drive. (also requires amp and speakers)

[MBZ] Copart

2018-02-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Well the guy selling that 300e I bid on yesterday screwed me out of bidding on
that E320 that went thru today I needed the fender and bumper off of. I
countered him back at $250 and he has not responded yet. I can only bid one car
at a time. So I watched the live auction for a bit today and it’s strange all
the places people are bidding from. It shows was country or state the bid comes
from. I saw several from Nigeria, some from Bahamas, some from Mexico.

I did notice the types of cars I am interested in such as 210s don’t seem to
bring much bidding action. I saw a 01 E320 top out at $250 which may have been
the prebid amount. The black one I was interested in started the auction at
$300 prebid amount and never got any live bids. It was a pure sale so it sold.

You can park a 2003 ML350 on a very busy off-ramp in Lansing Michigan for 10

Around here, a flat bed costs $75 hook charge and $3.50 per loaded mile.

Most newer vehicles are so generic looking that most folks would never
notice that an ML350 was a Mercedes. I think there is more risk with a
classic vehicle but I could well be wrong. Not anxious to test my theory.
I have arranged short hauls of vehicles close to home for $50 cash.
Don't know what it might cost if I was a 100 or more miles out and
needed to be hauled home.
Looks like a 76 300D weighs about 3400 pounds and it also appears that
my F150 will pull 8,000 pounds, so I would just need to rent or borrow a
trailer and I should be able to retrieve it by myself.

What lubricant do I use for the speedometer cable (I was told that was

BTW, on our '72 220D/8, I had speedometer screeching. I removed the
speedometer, sent it off to be repaired, installed it when it came back,
and never did anything with the cable.

How does one tell speedometer screeching versus speedometer cable
screeching?

I like the car and I really do not want to part with it but I did not
buy it to be a garage queen. I don't take it to car shows and I don't
want it to be a hobby car that I work on to make perfect but never
drive. I bought it to drive it. Now, having said that, I have not
actually driven it all that much, partly because I don't drive it in the
winter (which tends to be long up here in the GWN) and I don't normally
take it out if it is raining. Plus, it needs a few things tended to and
that kept me from using it as a daily driver to work last summer. I need
to put the vacuum shut off  doodad in as it won't shut off without my
opening the hood and pushing on the red tab. I have the part but have
not yet installed it. I intend to do so this spring as soon as things
warm up some.

However, I am concerned that it is becoming too old for my intended
purpose. It appears that parts are becoming harder to get and I don't
want to feel that I cannot readily take it any distance from home. I
don't want to have to hire a flat-deck tow truck to haul it home if I
run into trouble and I would not want to leave it along the road
anywhere for fear it would be vandalized. I doubt anyone would bother a
Honda parked along the road but this thing has become old enough to be
unique and that draws attention.

So, I am sort of at the point where I wonder if I should part with it
and get something newer. Maybe MB and maybe not but not quite as
noticeable.

Re: [MBZ] More copart

2018-02-15 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
I don't know who sells donation cars at Lansing, but they're always on approval
and they have lofty expectations of their Mercedes. First one I saw was a W140
S320, hit so hard in the rear that the back was bent down and it was buckled
above the back wheels. I was stunned when the bidding hit $900, and even more
stunned when I saw it at the next week's auction.
They should have jumped all over that $900 bid.
Furthermore, since the donation people don't have a dealer's license and they
don't want to retitle the cars in the name of the charity before they sell
them, all the donation cars are 'dealer only' bidding, so the idiots that bid
on that S320 all had dealer licenses.
