[MBZ] 240D offer

2018-03-29 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
Sitting in the local convenience store lot drinking coffee about 1:00 am.
BMW drives up and lady asked about my '83 240D which is like new.
I told her $7000 figuring that would discourage her, but she was still
interested. Gave her my phone number and told her to call me if she was still
interested tomorrow.
Would $7000 be high, low, or average for an '83 240D with 200K miles in pretty
good mechanical condition and very good physical condition inside and out?
It's a stick shift with mechanical A/C, heat, windows, and with the original
working radio.

One website said $15,000 for real show car quality with low mileage; $10,000
for one in average condition, and $5000 or less for driveable and restorable
240Ds.

Re: [MBZ] Speaking of bundts

2018-03-29 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes

About 10-15 years ago I was northbound on I95 behind a small pickup that was
loaded with cordwood. It got exciting when the pickup's right rear wheel took
off in another direction. I could see chunks of something breaking off the
rear axle and the truck began a divergent fishtail, eventually slinging
firewood to both sides until the truck spun around completely. My good luck
was an exit ramp, right there, that let me veer right to avoid the debris field
and get back on the highway. It was all over very fast. I didn't have a cell
phone back then so I reported the accident at the next toll booth. The lady
didn't seem interested.

So if the dude is asking $6k think I should offer $4.5? What about
that 302 I posted? It looks rougher and does not appear to have a
hood. And does not a brush hog with it like this one. If I was looking
at one I’m not sure if I would know if it was a POS or not. Guess if
everything goes up and down and does not leak it should be ok?

It has a diff Lock that you stomp with your left heel to engage. I
skidded logs with the post hole digger on the 3 pt, chain to the T of
the digger, balanced on rear wheels. stomp the diff lock and go. It
would skid huge logs in snow that way. Way more than it shoulda been
able to do. 32" dia red oaks 30-40 feet long. One white oak log was
almost 60' long, growing in a deep ravine. Post hole digger was a
safety to keep the tractor from flipping over backwards, climbing the
ring gear. It also allowed me to shift weight between front and back
axles, so I could lift the front end, and get all the traction on the
rear axle. This was 1530, 1975 farm version of the same driveline.

So far I am leaning toward the JD 301, wonder it I could get it for
$5k. Check my other email for a JD 302. How do you get fork
attachments for these things? With my current one that will be
departing tomorrow if I go thru with it, it has a quick attach loader.

You can probably get the IH for less too. It has been for sale a long
time. But, if I had the cash, I might go for the JD too.

So it looks like I’m fixing to sell my 3 year old JD which I have
only put 42 hours on. I have literally only had it out of the barn
maybe 3-4 times in the last year. Now I’m starting to think I don’t
want to sell it but the old boy already has a loan going at his bank.
I guess this way I will pay off the rest of my 0% loan to JD and have
some cash left and not have a monthly payment on something I am not
using that much. So that is why a while back I was talking about
cheaper tractors. I think I still need on around. As we discussed
before I prefer diesel and prefer one with a loader, but what about
if I found one without a loader and added one later? Or would I be
money ahead getting to whole thing at once. I think I want to spend
about $4-5k on one if possible. Or I might just wait and get one
later. Here are a few I have seen for sale. Some of these are more
that I have to spend but might have to pony it up a bit. If anybody

Good tractor, but the hydrostatic still scares me.  maybe other know
more about the workings/cost to rebuild, but a clutch, pressure plate
and throwout bearing are cheaper.  No concerns about gas for the few
hours you use it.  do a formal or informal compression test.  That is
a good loader.  Other than the hydrostat, a great tractor and fair price.

Decent tractor, it or the IH should be big enough to pick up small to

more like $2500-3500 tractors.

Good farm tractor

JD301 was the most popular backhoe tractor around 1970.  It is the
same as a JD1530, with heavier front and rear axles and industrial
(heavy) loader vs the farm loader.  Check a price guide, but I'd guess
the price is pretty close.  You most likely can get your money out of
it as long as the paint is decent anytime you want to sell it.  A JD
is always the easiest to sell.

So it looks like I’m fixing to sell my 3 year old JD which I have only
put 42 hours on. I have literally only had it out of the barn maybe
3-4 times in the last year. Now I’m starting to think I don’t want to
sell it but the old boy already has a loan going at his bank. I guess
this way I will pay off the rest of my 0% loan to JD and have some
cash left and not have a monthly payment on something I am not using
that much. So that is why a while back I was talking about cheaper
tractors. I think I still need on around. As we discussed before I
prefer diesel and prefer one with a loader, but what about if I found
one without a loader and added one later? Or would I be money ahead
getting to whole thing at once. I think I want to spend about $4-5k on
one if possible. Or I might just wait and get one later. Here are a
few I have seen for sale. Some of these are more that I have to spend
but might have to pony it up a bit. If anybody cares to look at these
and let me know what you think. My JD was my first tractor and I know
next to nothing about what might be a good deal or a POS

Makes sense. You are better off to buy tractor and loader assembled.
it will cost you more to put a loader on a tractor. you'd pay at least
$2500 for a loose loader and probably $500 to $1000 putting it on,
unless it came off the same model of tractor.

Good farm tractor

JD 301 was the most popular backhoe in the early 70s. This is an old
puppy like the ford. Check compression, etc. It is pretty much the
same as a 1530 JD, but with the industrial front end, loader and rear
end. That is all good for your use. The 3 cyl idles with a lope, that
is normal. It is a bit pricey, but you can resell a JD easier than
anything else, so as long as the paint stays good, you could probably
get your money out of it when you sell. Over all, so far the IH and
the JD are my licks, with the frod bing a pick if it was 3500.
The hood is still 1960s style, but that may have carried over longer in
the industrial series. the 30 series (1530-4430) came out about 1973 or 74.

Take it apart, clean the contacts, and apply a small amount of conductive
grease to prevent future corrosion of the contact points. Contact cleaner
usually doesn't do much, you have to physically remove the gunk from the
contact surfaces.

Ditto for seat switches.

Check to make sure the contact are not cracked, too -- won't work if they are.

Did you get all the wires in the right places (if any came loose)?
Contacts inside and the springs and tiny bits all in their proper
places?  I'd take it apart again and put it back together and give it a try.

[MBZ] Tractors

2018-03-29 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So it looks like I’m fixing to sell my 3 year old JD which I have only put 42
hours on. I have literally only had it out of the barn maybe 3-4 times in the
last year. Now I’m starting to think I don’t want to sell it but the old boy
already has a loan going at his bank. I guess this way I will pay off the rest
of my 0% loan to JD and have some cash left and not have a monthly payment on
something I am not using that much. So that is why a while back I was talking
about cheaper tractors. I think I still need on around. As we discussed before
I prefer diesel and prefer one with a loader, but what about if I found one
without a loader and added one later? Or would I be money ahead getting to
whole thing at once. I think I want to spend about $4-5k on one if possible. Or
I might just wait and get one later. Here are a few I have seen for sale. Some
of these are more that I have to spend but might have to pony it up a bit. If
anybody cares to look at these and let me know what you think. My JD was my
first tractor and I know next to nothing about what might be a good deal or a

Re: [MBZ] I have a fellow who is interested in buying our Peterbilt ...

2018-03-29 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Good questions:
The escrow account at his bank would serve as a "single account"
established for the sole purpose of receiving the funds. Banks very often
use "Escrow accounts" during real estate transactions. The bank serves as a
trusted third party that makes sure both parties to the sale meet the
conditions of the sale... ie... Truck is accepted at XXX price Payment
is made at XXX amount..

It has to work this way.
0. Seller agrees to sell. Buyer agrees to buy. Thus, a contract is made.
1. Buyer is approved by finance company for the agreed amount.
2. Seller agrees to sell for the agreed amount.
3. Finance company will hold a lien on the truck, thus the title [in my
state, lender holds actual title until lien is released, your state law may
function differently].
4. Funds transfer from Buyers finance company TO Sellers bank, in certified
funds.
5. Concurrently, Title will transfer to either the finance company, or the
Buyer, depending on the governing state law where transaction occurs.
6. Seller takes possession of funds, Buyer takes possession of the truck,
and title with lien interest held by Finance company.[just how the lien is
recorded and executed is subject to governing state law.]

Re: [MBZ] Brake Pads

2018-03-29 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Ditto, I've put Akebono on both MB and Infiniti, they are superb. My "seat
of the pants" testing says they are better during panic stops (faster grab)
and just as good at stopping the car during that first stop, but I think
they _may_ suffer from fade faster than the MB-spec pads. My wagon brakes
will fade during Italian tune-up sessions with aggressive braking at the
end of each run, after just two or three stops from highway speed. The
fade could be due to other factors (I need to flush the brake fluid and the
rotors are old and may be getting thin) so only a suspicion at this point.

Brake dust from Akebono: not totally gone, but nothing at all as bad as the
original MB pads.

Re: [MBZ] I have a fellow who is interested in buying our Peterbilt ...

2018-03-29 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Grant,

What are the terms / details on how the escrow account works. Do they only
transfer the funds to Craig once the buyer agrees? Put another way, if the
buyer takes the title and the vehicle, but then refuses to cooperate, how
does Craig get his money? Legal action against the buyer? Proof of title
transfer by getting a copy from the DMV? Signed bill of sale from the
buyer?

If I were Craig, I would prefer that a signed bill of sale, signed by the
buyer, would be sufficient to release the funds from escrow.

2018-03-29 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Contact the finance company, with your buyers permission, to arrange
satisfactory payment.

If the finance company checks out as legit, open an escrow account at YOUR
bank for the specific purpose of receiving The Finance Companies bank to
bank WIRE TRANSFER [wire transfers are very near impossible to recall, or
fake].

Do your dealing as necessary with the buyer, firm up the final price, and
ask him to pull the purchase trigger with his finance company. BY Prior
arrangement with your banker, have them call you confirming receipt and
clearance of funds INTO your escrow account.

ONLY THEN, release title to new buyer, shake his hand and wave bye bye to
truck... Done and Dusted.

Once the money is in your bank, move it to where ever you wish.
I've used this system for years when selling large ticket items, with good
success.

Talking to Yourself Out Loud May Be a Sign of Higher Intelligence

While talking to yourself is often regarded a social no-no, possibly hinting at
psychological problems, new research suggests that point of view may need
revision. Scientists at Bangor University in the UK found talking to yourself
out loud is not only be helpful but may indicate a higher level of intelligence.

The study’s participants were given written instructions and told to either
read them out loud or silently. After measuring the concentration and how
participants performed on tasks, researchers concluded that people were more
concentrated and absorbed what they read better when doing so out loud.

As the study’s co-author and psychologist Dr. Paloma Mari-Beffa explains, the
benefits may be coming “from simply hearing oneself, as auditory commands seem
to be better controllers of behavior than written ones”.

Dr. Mari-Beffa sees speaking out loud as an extension of our inner silent talk,
which has been shown to help us organize thoughts, emotions and memories, as
well as plan actions.

She cites athletes, especially tennis players, who talk to themselves in
stressful moments. They use spoken self-instructions to help focus their minds
and motivate themselves to achieve specific goals.

The inventor Nikola Tesla was known to talk to himself during lighting storms.

The researcher adds that talking out loud could actually be “a sign of high
cognitive functioning”.

“The stereotype of the mad scientist talking to themselves, lost in their
own inner world, might reflect the reality of a genius who uses all the means
at their disposal to increase their brain power,” points out Dr. Mari-Beffa.

The experiment in the study was performed on a relatively small sample of 28
participants but previous studies also indicated that talking to oneself had
cognitive benefits, like helping find objects quicker.

behaviour” here.

You can read the study “The impact of verbal instructions on goal-directed
behaviour” here.

I’ve never chemically stripped one, only sand or bead blasted if I took old
paint off. If it’s intact I just prep it the best I can and paint over.
