2018-04-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've got a similar one I paid about the same for. Works in my 2010 Dodge Ram.
Tried it in Dad's '04 Jeep Liberty but never got it to work. Haven't tried it

This thing came the other day, I think it was like $12 delivered with
the special a week or two ago.  Plugged it into the E300D a little while
ago.

I downloaded an app OBD Car Doctor to my ifone that gives some basic
readings from the thing.  Go into Settings/Wifi, find the device and
select it, my phone connected right to it, the app picked it up and
started showing data, so it works, pretty simple set up.  Showed the GP
codes so it got those, one of them it said what the code meant, the
other it gave the option to look it up when not connected to it.  It
also lets you email data right from the app when the car is running  I'm
going to try it on my trucks too, see what it says about them.  In this
app you can set up multiple vehicles and select the one you're looking at.

There are other apps too, both free and pay.  This app has the option to
by the pro version that has a lot more features, but it gives the basics
well enough in real time on a little graph.  You can watch individual
parameters in real time while driving, the pay version lets you set up a
"dashboard" with multiple parameters at once.  There are a bunch of
apps, like $5 and $10 if you want to pay.

Some of the emailed data are listed below, it goes on with the whole
time log.

VERDICT:  Not bad for $12.

Identical in weight and MPG, the 350 had 254 ft-lb @ 3000rpm, 232hp @ 5750.
The 320 had 229ft-lb @ 3000, 215hp @ 5600. Don't ask me why the larger
displacement version breathed better at high rpm, maybe the 350 has a slightly
hotter cam or bigger valves?

I don’t know if that would work since the numbers change with engine speed etc
when displayed on the main screen. If you go to each parameter on this app it
takes you to a graph where the number is displayed but then also a running

[MBZ] OT Gullah Story

2018-04-28 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

copied this off a FB history post:

Here is another Gullah story. Back in the '60s we hired this Gullah
woman from our farm labor to help out in the house and look after our
two young ones while we worked. She was an excellent cook, and told us
that she worked one time for a man named Capt'n Sam, a local shrimp boat
owner and had this story:

He was hunting and brought an egret it home for her to cook. She said"
Unna pluck dem feathers til the whole bak yaad been full. Unna cut de
nek off cuz dey ain't hev a pot big 'nuf to put de bird in. Unna put de
nek in de pot and unna bile an' bile em. Unna chek de meat and it be
tough. Unna bile em and bile em sum mo'. Capt'n. Sam cum in de do and
axe bout de bird. Unna tellum it be cook all dey long. Capt'n Sam set to
de tabul an' unna tek de nek out and win' roun' and roun’ on de plate.
Capt'n. Sam look and study dat nek fo' while and den say "' Gib dis nek
to de dawg."' Unna thro' the nek out de do to de dawg and dat dawg
smellum and run to de woods. Unna had to bury dat nek fo' dat dawg come
home. Unna tell Capt'n. Sam dat if 'e brung somp'in home lak dat 'gain,

Unfair advantage to the code reader boys who will know the car is junk. The
code reader folks might destroy stuff while trying to get the reader hooked up.
They maybe suck the codes out and blank it.

[MBZ] Kobra cheepchinee wifi OBD reader

2018-04-28 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

I kinda like that bread van.  I'm seeing a hot rod version with updated
suspension and a big engine.

This one is interesting too.
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1958-moore-hemi-roadster/

Some years ago I was looking at a property where the old man had died,
kind of a ratty little house on a pretty nice few acres of land, there
was a shed with an old Jeep and an IH Metro van kinda overgrown but out
of most of the weather.  I so wanted that Metro van, it would have made
a very cool rat rod project.  It was an old plumber van, had the painted
graphics fading on the side.

kinda like this.

Re: [MBZ] Today's 400E Fun

2018-04-28 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I have had some past success removing the "dead foam" from headliner cards
using nylon dish brush [the kind with a handle] to break loose the
remaining foam bits from the headliner card without doing damage to it.

It also helps to use two folding tables as a work surface to support the
headliner while you "scrub" the foam bits off. Shop vacuum in one hand,
dish brush in the other, while holding the headliner steady with your third
hand ;))

It's a bitch of a job...
YMMV,

Re: [MBZ] Today's 400E Fun

2018-04-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Take out the “A” pillar trim, “B" pillar trim, loosen the leading edge of the
“C” pillar trim, pull off the windlace that goes around the door openings,
remove the rear courtesy light, remove trim strip on the leading edge of the
sunroof opening, remove the grab handles and trim panel containing the rear
view mirror, sun visors/clips and courtesy light. Pull forward slightly to
disengage the locking strip on the trailing edge of the sunroof opening.

Then the fun begins.

Move the seats forward as far as they will go, then lower the seat backs down
as far as they will go. I can’t explain how to do it, but once the headliner
board is removed from the roof you just have to orient it so it comes out one
of the back doors. Takes a little finagling but that’s how it comes out and
goes back in.

It’s not a difficult job, just time consuming.

Re: [MBZ] Today's 400E Fun

2018-04-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Nothing more than a plastic putty knife and a shop vac.

If you use a shop vac with a plastic nozzle you can scrape and remove the
remains of the foam from the headliner board without a lot of difficulty, and
it’s not terribly messy. Try to avoid scraping it into big clumps, as these
will end up sticking to the board and are pretty much impossible to remove.
The fabric has to be laid out and scraped with a wide plastic putty knife, but
if you’re light with your touch and just sort of “sweep” it with the putty
knife the remains of the foam comes off pretty easily and leaves little in the
way of residue.

I put the scraped headliner board out in the sun for a while to harden up the
remaining glue. A fair amount of the little “pills” came off after I did this
since they weren’t sticky any more.

From there I hung the fabric up from my (raised) garage door using some clamps
to hold it, then used the brush attachment on my shop vac to clear off the
remains of the glue and foam.

It’s messy, there’s no denying it. But using the shop vac goes a long way in
keeping the mess to a minimum.

Here are some pictures:

http://penoff.com/photodump.html

B pillar covers get done today, probably.
