[MBZ] Road Trip!

2018-05-22 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I think I may have mentioned on the list that we are no longer going to
Indiana. SonSet Solutions withdrew its offer for me to join them as a
volunteer engineer. When we interviewed with them in March, 2014, we were
told they were used to waiting up to five years for people to raise
support. Since it had only been four and since we were actively working
with a real estate agent and looking for a house to buy and were planning
a trip to purchase a house, we were quite shocked, to say the least. They
said they now had enough engineers and didn't need me.

We still have to move, however, because the place in which we are
currently living is not really suitable as a long-term dwelling and is
quite expensive. That's not even considering the dusty environs in which
the building is situated and my health problems with dust.

Last September, when we were poised to haul 1000 disaster relief buckets
for our denomination's relief group, but were later told the buckets
would not be available, one of the places at which I looked to provide
assistance was Samaritan's Purse (the ministry which does the Operation
Christmas Child) in North Carolina. Nothing came of that at the time, but
I have looked at them again since February.

I called a college friend of mine who lives in North Carolina and asked
him what it was like. His bottom-line assessment was that he likes it.

We plan to head east tomorrow morning to explore what is back there.
Exactly how long we will be gone and where all we will go remains to be
seen. I do know the U.S. Postal Service will hold our mail for up to 30
days, so we have the potential for being on the road for a month.

Currently, I plan on driving to Charlotte, North Carolina, and visiting
the college friend of mine, then exploring the Boone and North Wilkesboro
area where Samaritan's Purse is located, then exploring Waxhaw, NC, where
JAARS (Jungle Aviation and Radio Service, another missionary
organization) is.

We may even take a jaunt down to Chucktown to visit the dynamic duo who
run the Southeast Mercedes Rescue Association.

We then plan on driving to New Jersey so I can talk with the people who
sold me an ARB refrigerator that doesn't hold temperature very well.
After that is the Hudson Valley of New York, where some friends run a
Christian radio station network.

After that, we will drive to Kentucky, where we will visit Answers in
Genesis and the Kentucky Trailer company, which manufactured our 51'
drop-frame furniture van, so I can ask them some questions.

Then we will head through Missouri, where we will hopefully visit with
Philip (fmiser) and stop at 4 State Trucks, a heavy truck accessory
seller, and then back through Oklahoma and to home in New Mexico.

All in all, about 6000 miles.

I for one, would truly enjoy seeing a video of a lawyer having shame. I've
never seen that..
After that however, I'm done... ;))

There are cell phone mounts which fasten to A/C vents, too.

Once you have the phone mounted, how do you expect to implement the
hands-free portion?

I really don't think law enforcement would be interested if I brought a
case, because repairing the damage would probably run maybe $150 including
a new part.

I just looked at the other pictures.
The Delco picture is the same Bosch photo.
TYC and Power Source pics are generic Chinese alternators similar to the one I
received.
I processed a return for the one I got with the corner busted off the
regulator, they gave me a return label for ME to drive it to Fedex. Apparently
they think I work for them as an unpaid volunteer.

I ordered another one, and will try to hand the damaged one off to the Fedex
Ground contractor who delivers the replacement.

I was hoping they'd tell me to just keep it, like they did last year when they
sent me somebody else's returned damaged radiator for the ML. If they did, I'd
put a new regulator in it and put it on the shelf for a spare.

Re: [MBZ] Hit and run plus catch

2018-05-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Look at it this way:

If you call the tool you better have an idea of what you want and prepare to
stand your ground. State what your amount is, what you based it on, and that
you will accept cash in return for an agreement to consider the matter closed
(that you get to review prior to a commitment) followed wth a date that you
want it resolved by.

Alternately, you can call your insurer and explain what happened and ask their
advice. At least I know I can talk to my agent in a situation like this and
get an idea of which way will be the most expedient resolution and benefit me
the most. If you don’t have that kind of relationship with your insurance
agent, I’m not sure what to tell you as I sure as heck wouldn’t call the home
office customer service and ask. That’s because they’ll make a record of it.

Re: [MBZ] Hit and run plus catch

2018-05-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
He’s an attorney. He attempted to flee the scene and had to be coerced to
cooperate and do the right thing.

Does that make you think he’s going to negotiate with you in a reasonable
manner?

I think you would be wasting your time, myself. The guy sounds like a real
tool, and based on his actions I wouldn’t expect anything better.

And what do you think you’re going to get from him by going directly?

I’m not against this in principle, as I had an incident at work where a guy
nailed the side of my 350SDL. We talked about it, I got an estimate which was
slightly more than his deductible, and I offered to take the deductible ($500)
and call it a deal. He was more than happy to do it - but - and I say this to
punctuate the situation - he fessed up when it happened like an honest person
would do so. That had a lot to do with my willingness to work something out
with him.

Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe have a branch in DC, you need to get them on
the case

If they are busy, get all the names of the principals at the FH (you are
democrat so you could get a few dead people to give statements too) and
get all that to the insco and let them go after the shyster, whom one
hopes had a nicer Lexus or something that got a good scrape courtesy the
old Benz.

This is why I have insurance and an insurance agent.

At this point (if it were me) I would call my agent and ask him how I should
proceed. Your deductible may play into this, so before you call you might want
to get some parts prices and see what they’ll cost to replace. Reinstalling
the rubber bumper strip on those pumpers is a PITA and to do it correctly
involves removing the bumper, if I recall correctly.

Re: [MBZ] 2003 MB E500

2018-05-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The early ones were not known for their reliability, I don’t think. Jaime
would know for sure as he’s more familiar with the W211s.

You gotta hedge your bets, and you have the provenance for this one, so if
you’re going to go for one it’s far better than buying one off Craigslist. And
you know your indie is familiar with it, too….

Re: [MBZ] My brother's W140 For Sale

2018-05-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That’s still a lot closer than Tulsa.

I do love the W140s, but not the pre-1996 models. The earlier models have so
many issues compared to the facelift ones I wouldn’t touch one that was made
before 1996. 1996 and later are pretty darned bulletproof, even though the
glass isn’t. My issues were with pre-facelift (1995 & earlier) models, which
this is.

And based on the description, this is a whole bag of hurt. Sounds more like a
parts car, if that. Then again, that *would* make it an Okie Acres candidate,
wouldn’t it?

(1) Make a police report immediately. Would be nice if the police got
statement(s) from the witnesses.

(2) Contact your Insco and let them collect from the perp.

(3) If that fails, either lawyer-up or take him to small claims court.

I went to pick up my car at lunch today, which was parked right in front of
a Funeral Home on the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and a side street in
northwest DC. To my horror, the front bumper was knocked off that is, the
rubber strip was detached and the side rubber cover at the Left End of the
bumper was torn. There was a note on my windshield from the funeral home
however. Turns out some older lawyer guy took a shortcut through the
funeral home driveway to avoid a light, and in so doing scraped his car
against my bumper. He tried to drive off, but a couple of dudes from the
funeral home chased witnessed the accident, chased him down him down and
forced him to turn over his personal identification. The guy from the
funeral home and I try to reattach the strip but ended up just tying it
down with a piece of twine. My question is, should I contact contact this

there may have been some overlap/transitional models.

Re: [MBZ] E300td oel and EGR?

2018-05-22 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
My 15k was at least half highway driving - that probably contributed to the
good analysis results. Oil analysis is valuable for identifying developing
problems by detecting excessive wear early. You hope not to find anything,
but if you do, you can take steps to repair before you get stranded
somewhere. This is more important with 60+ year old aircraft engines than
it is for MB engines, since you can't pull over and call AAA.

You don't - stay with the original radios. Get a Bluetooth speaker if you
want to listen to media from your phone. Don't answer the phone, even hands
free while you're driving. It's your lack of attention, not your hands that
cause accidents.

A "man in the middle" attack is when a fake wifi access point deceives you
into connecting, and then captures all your traffic. The danger is that a
sophisticated attacker would then route your request to go to your bank to
a fake website that looks like your bank, capture your login info, and then
exploit it.

Sorry, I still don't understand.

How would having wifi authentication information make connection to a
bank insecure? If I make sure the bank's page is encrypted before I enter
my bank login information, is that not secure?

If I make sure I am connecting to the correct access point, how would
someone else eavesdropping be a "man in the middle"? Would he not just
be an eavesdropper like someone monitoring wire traffic?

I like it so far. The only things I don't like are basically that it isn't my
7 series. For example, the back seat is a lot smaller. But, the back seat in
almost any other car other than a BMW 7 series is going to be smaller. I do
like the power. That 5.0 engine feels pretty sweet. I like the ride, I can't
figure out half of the controls but that is just because it is new to me. I
like the fact that it is running and my BMW is sitting in Oklahoma waiting for
a water pump to arrive. My friend and mechanic has serviced it for 10+ years.
So, I know it has been maintained. It is comfortable although quite a bit
smaller than my car. I am surprised how small it looks. But, it feels larger
than it looks -- in a good way. The only thing I have noticed is that it has a
slight shimmy at 80-85 mph. I think the tires need to be balanced. I like the
fact that my mechanic knows this car and its history.

THe price? I'm not sure yet. He bought it from his customer (who has had it
for 10+ years) for $4000 because he she had some health problems and needed
some money. He was going to let his son drive it. He had to replace the air
shocks. That cost him almost $1000. So, he has $5000 in it. I think he
would sell it for what he has in it. That seems to be a decent price. The
fact that this one has service records so it is arguably worth more.

Re: [MBZ] E300td oel and EGR?

2018-05-22 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
I think the synthetic stuff resists coking better if it leaks past the
turbine seals. I also think it keeps working to higher temps if the engine
overheats. And after running it for 100k in the 617a, I am convinced the
timing chains wear less with synthetic. Something about better shear
properties. Small but significant considerations for higher mile cars.

The oil change cost analysis does not factor in the time needed to assemble
parts or dispose of the used oil or do the actual swap in the driveway or
wherever when you should be doing something else. Or the time to clean the
soot out of your fingernails.

It is definitely interesting to think about changing oil a lot less often.
15k seems like a stretch in the city though.

Re: [MBZ] OT: https and public WiFi hot spots

2018-05-22 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I've found that Marriott hotels generally have the wifi router in the room,
under the desk, and it has a couple ethernet ports. They usually even have
a cable available on the desktop, so I can avoid the wifi altogether.

If I have to use the wifi, I look at all the wifi signals available, make
sure I'm selecting the legitimate hotel source, which in the case of
Marriott they require a login on the landing page. If I go to a bank
website, I make sure the bank website is https BEFORE I enter any login
credentials. Many banks used to have both http and https login pages, but
I think most have eliminated that practice by now.

I've also got two-factor authentication set up wherever possible, so I
enter the login, then get a text on my phone that I have to enter the code
as well.

Re: [MBZ] No frills - car Radio Supplier

2018-05-22 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Kaleb,

The big draw for me is the Blue Tooth link between phone and radio. Hands
free phone conversations have become a legal requirement in many places.

I also listen to podcasts far more often than radio or music, especially on
a long road trip (download an audio book or two) and Blue Tooth makes that
so convenient.

The Continental / VDO radios have no swimming fish or little teeny tiny
buttons and actually look like they belong; they DON'T blatantly look like
aftermarket. User controls are simple and easy to use while driving (knob
for volume, push the knob for mute, hold down the knob to power down the
radio; discrete programmable buttons for radio stations0.

The downside is they are made in China and the programming of the radio is
rather 2nd rate, so the menu system is weird and the defaults for some
things are irritating.

Re: [MBZ] OT: https and public WiFi hot spots

2018-05-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
While using https does provide security, your authentication information is
initially sent in the clear in some cases depending on the wifi protocol being
used. This makes it possible for a “man in the middle” attack to occur, giving
the attacker your authentication credentials and therefore access to your data.

I’m talking about when you’re actually connecting with the access point, not
the connection with your banking institution.

When I’m on public wifi I do nothing that would be considered secure, such as
accessing bank or credit card accounts. Too risky.
