[MBZ] 190d blower motor resistor/ac

2018-05-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Is it normal for the blower motor resistor to glow like a toaster? Not sure I
have ever noticed it before. I need to push the 190d into service since the 98
e300 is down right now with a bad conductor plate, and the muffler has fallen
off the 95. Going to try to use an adaptor deal to reconnect it. Ac is dead and
is still r12. Compressor does not kick in when pressure switch is jumped, but
does kick in when Klima relay is jumpered. While compressor is running I don’t
see anything moving they the sight glass so it’s probably empty. I will hook it
up to my r12 machine and see if it holds a vacuum or not. I think I have a
partial 30lb cylinder of r12 but am reluctant to use it. Is there a drop in
replacement that will be available locally? I seem to recall freeze 12 but
don’t know if it’s still available at flaps like it used to be. Otherwise I
guess I will convert to r134.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Elon Musk's very awkward moment...

2018-05-30 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Yes its a union thing. Autonomous trains have been possible for decades now.

Flawed as they may be, and as deceptive as the advertising is, the
collision avoidance stuff is probably saving more lives than it takes, by a
large margin. But I have driven the Tesla and was so unimpressed by the
otto pilot that I went and leased an x5 instead. Unlike the tesla it has a
range following radar. Works pretty well but not perfect either.

Teslas got rid of lidar. Nobody else thinks that is possible.

Waymo is way mo advanced than the rest. They will have driverless minivans
for hire deployed this year or next I think; only company to be even
remotely close to that.

[MBZ] Drilling a hole in a bolt for safety wire

2018-05-30 Thread fmiser via Mercedes
I went looking for a jig to simplify trying to drill a hole
through a corner of a bolt/nut hex to attach safety wire.

Amazon has one for sale. Two parts - one to drill the corner of a hex and the
other to drill through the thread end of a bolt.

https://www.amazon.com/MOTO4U-Safety-Lockwire-Drill-Metric/dp/B074J83Q2V

One review. I do agree with the fellow that some sort of
instructions should be included. But look at the photo to see how
he is using it.

Creative. And really struck my funny bone!

[MBZ] OT - .22 Shooting Fun

2018-05-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Spent about three hours at the range with the youngest boy his afternoon. Went
through easily 300+ rounds of .22 between the Marlin 60 and the Beretta Neos.
Shot about 80 rounds in the SKS as well.

The boy got the Marlin’s scope zeroed in quite well. At 25 yards, the max
distance of our range (after all, it really is a pistol range) you can easily
group within an inch. Not bad for a cheap scope.

Looking forward to getting the speed loader, for sure.

Absolutely - they are trained and kept current to the standards of their
country, or company in some cases. I really like the pilots who fly GA
aircraft in their spare time for fun - they know how to hand fly an
airplane. that having been said, I don't think Sully flew GA - just had
good training and kept his cool.

Tesla in Autopilot mode hits parked police car in Calif.Published:
Wednesday, May 30, 2018

A Tesla Inc. electric vehicle in Autopilot mode yesterday crashed into a
parked police car in Laguna Beach, Calif., authorities said.

The driver of the Tesla sedan suffered minor injuries, said police Sgt. Jim
Cota.

There was no one behind the wheel of the police car, which ended up with
two wheels on the sidewalk, Cota said.

The incident places even further scrutiny on Tesla's semiautonomous
Autopilot feature.

Earlier this month, a Tesla Model S on Autopilot sped up just before
crashing into a fire truck in Utah.

Consumer groups have asked federal regulators to probe what they call the
company's "deceptive advertising" for the feature (*Greenwire*

It’s Craigslist. Need I say more?

I replied back to the seller and suggested they have “go to Jesus” meeting
with the owner if they expected to sell the car, listing just a handful of
reasons, but didn’t get a response - not that I expected one. I did it as a
courtesy, but these slime bucket sellers will always be in the market and
there’s no way to rationalize where they’re coming from.

Re: [MBZ] OT: HTML is bad for Email

2018-05-30 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Nearly all email clients offer an option to send messages in plain text.
However, there’s nothing you can do about emails you receive from others.
Again, most current email clients will display both types of mail without
issue, and make the determination to do so on the fly and automagically.

[MBZ] OT: HTML is bad for Email

2018-05-30 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
More and more people seem to be sending simple messages to email groups on the
web using an unfamiliar version of html.
Those that appear as little boxes marked html that force you to open them from
the web are a big PIA, and sometimes you can't even read them then.

A website last published in 2005 had this to say:

"Because HTML is for making web pages and plain text is for simple
communications. If you're looking to create a web page or write a book, fine.
But e-mail messages are not web pages or books. e-mail was designed for simple
messaging. Anything else detracts, rather than adds to its core functionality."

Why HTML in E-Mail is a Bad Idea
http://archive.birdhouse.org/etc/evilmail.html#problem

Since friends who use it are computer illiterate, and don't even realize some
members can't read their emails, what should I tell them to do? Which email
client should they use if the email client is causing the problem; OR; which
email client should I switch to?
Thanks,
Gerry

Jaime (and I, if it's 4matic which is probably is not) are interested in it as
a car.

1. It's the very last of the 210 chassis, and there weren't many of them made.
2. It's probably 100% rust free.
3. It has less than 100k on the odo, mine had 234k on it when I bought it six
years ago.

Re: [MBZ] W108 Walkaround

2018-05-30 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Five minute walk around - just a sampling of what I found:

Repaint. Paint poorly masked around windows and seals and peeling in those areas

Floor rusted through in several spots and repaired, but they missed a couple of
dime-sized holes in the rear seat floorboards. Oops!

Undercarriage has signs of recently applied undercoating (floorboard
replacement and covering rocker panels)

Both sides of trunk wells full of water, like 3”-4”

New motor mounts!

The “new” cold start valve came with gobs of RTV slathered around the joint
where the cover meets the base. Nice. Never saw one out of the box like that,
must be a redesign

I could go on, but why bother? A classic example of a CL ad. Looks halfway
decent, but upon closer inspection it’s a train wreck.

Yeah, I’m not interested in spending a grand for an old beat up 1911,
regardless of provenance. I may ask the range about it next time I’m there.

Interestingly, I noticed that all of the local ROTC groups are members.

Further questioning reveals a shifting issue; it doesnt always do what it
