Are there other refiners actually making synthetic nowadays? One question is how much an oil companies choice of additives is responsible for a motors increased longevity. I remember when high performance engines were required to add "whale oil" to dino oil since dino oil could not maintain a film between the bearing surfaces. Even some high performance Chrysler engines required whale oil. I don't know if it was an additive or the advent of synthetic oil that made whale oil unnecessary. Does anyone know which oils for the new Mercedes Diesels are recommended? Has anyone sent off diesel oil samples for testing lately? IMO if the amount of synthetic in Mobil1 was cut, it would be in the oils for gas burners. I don't think Exxon would have cut the synthetic in oil for diesels because of the much heavier bearing loads on diesel engines, but that's just a guess of course. [MBZ] OT Article for Rich
SOUTH CAROLINAGullah enclave has long history of enduring hurricanesPublished: Thursday, September 13, 2018 As a potentially catastrophic Hurricane Florence steamed toward the Carolinas, Josh Dais watched the weather reports on the television in his barbershop and listened for updates from emergency officials. But when it comes to deciding whether to flee this island where thousands of black residents trace their ancestry back to West Africans who once toiled in nearby fields, the opinions of family elders can carry as much weight as those of professional meteorologists. "If Mama won't leave, most folks aren't going to leave," Dais, 29, said Tuesday, recalling how he rode out Tropical Storm Irma last year and Hurricane Matthew in 2016 with relatives at his mother's home. "If Mama and Grandma are going, then a lot of people are leaving." Respect for tradition and deep cultural roots have persisted for generations on St. Helena Island, the largest Gullah community on the South Carolina coast. An estimated 5,000 or more people living here are descended from slaves who worked rice plantations in the area before they were freed by the Civil War. Smaller enclaves of Gullah, referred to as Geechee in some areas, are scattered along the Southeast's coastline from North Carolina to Florida. Scholars say separation from the mainland caused the Gullah to retain much of their African heritage, including a unique dialect and skills such as cast-net fishing and basket weaving. Destructive hurricanes haven't been too frequent in St. Helena Island's past. But the so-called Sea Islands Hurricane of 1893 devastated the area after rolling ashore in Savannah, Ga., and killed an estimated 2,000 people. Emory Campbell, a Gullah descendant and scholar, recalled riding as a boy in a neighbor's old cart on Hilton Head Island as Hurricane Gracie struck in 1959 and tore the roof off a hotel. "We saw some remnants of hurricanes here when I was growing up," Campbell said. "The wind would blow, you'd put some tin up against the window, but you wouldn't know that much except for the scratchy sounds on the radio coming out of Savannah." Hurricane Matthew smashed and toppled trees across surrounding Beaufort County in 2016 but largely spared the modest ranch houses, bungalows and mobile homes of St. Helena Island. John Brown, 54, said he spent two weeks after Matthew cutting up fallen trees with a chain saw in his job for a municipal public works department. A giant live oak uprooted by the storm remains intact across the street from Brown's home. "If my job didn't require me to stay, I'd be out of here in a heartbeat," Brown said after giving fresh water to his four cows Tuesday. "I think most of the older ones, they're kind of stubborn. But the younger ones, not so much." Bertha Bradley wasn't worrying. She and her husband grew up on St. Helena Island and own Bradley's Seafood, a small cinderblock shop where they sell shrimp, flounder and whiting, all caught by their son. Bradley said she has never favored evacuating ahead of hurricanes, in part because her great-grandmother never did. Bradley and her husband missed Gracie in 1959 because they were in Savannah after getting married. One subsequent storm, she's not sure which one, scared them enough to get them to leave the island. But the traffic, she said, was awful. "I said, 'Why get on the road like this? I'm going to get killed on the road,'" Bradley said. "I should stay in my house, where I have water and food. If God's coming for you, you can't run from him." *— Russ Bynum, Associated Press* ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] 1999 Mercedes ML430 - $2950
In pictures, looks better than my 2003, has 20k less miles. Tires look quite new, if potentially a bit noisy. But it doesn't have the 2000 model year upgrades, and rumor used to be that the 1998-1999 MLs were not that great mechanically (transfer case and maybe transmission). But, if it doesn't leak steering fluid, the belt tensioner is good, the drivetrain steering and suspension seem tight, I don't think you're risking too much if you offer $2500 for it. Can't say I like the roo bar, but if it'll help stop Bambi from taking out the radiator... ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

That puppy would be what I would want, if I lived on that beach. - Max Charleston SC On Thu, Sep 13, 2018 at 12:50 AM G Mann via Mercedes wrote: > "Only 55 ft waves" > > Well dang and I already unpacked the big water wings... > > 83 ft waves so... a wave 3 times the height of a single story house... > That makes me want to run right out and buy a little "beach house", right > on the ocean... yup not. > > > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Have you tried climbing in and out of an ML? I'm concerned that may be hard for Shirley. 430 = V8? How's that mileage compared to the I6? - Max Charleston SC On Wed, Sep 12, 2018 at 11:18 PM Craig via Mercedes wrote: > OK, here is one in which I might be interested. > > What do all of you think? > > > https://albuquerque.craigslist.org/cto/d/1999-mercedes-ml430/6695407207.html > > 1999 Mercedes ML430 AWD > 17 miles > Runs Great > Clean Interior > Very nice vehicle > > clean title > $2950 > > > Craig > > ___ > http://www.okiebenz.com > > To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ > > To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: > http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com > > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
