I really like my RedWings. That's been my work boot for more than

Keep 'em oiled (I use a beeswax and oil mix) and they will last a

Back when I first owned my '83 240D a bad battery killed several (5?)
alternators. The car started okay as long as it was warm out. Once cold weather
came the bad battery became obvious and once I replaced it I never had to
replace the alternator again.

Stop in at any local FLAPS and ask them to load test the battery. If is
passes, and I doubt it will from your problem description, then load test
the alternator.
Typically, it's "no charge", for both tests and should help with your
problem solution.

True, those will be my first objects of interest. Tachometer problem may
be unrelated to the apparent low voltage condition.

When you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras. The alternator and/or the
battery are at fault here. Both are easily testable, often for free at
many FLAPS.

The alternator (with non-replaceable voltage regulator) was replaced about
6 or 7 years ago, so I think a bad alternator is low on the list but yes it
is still worth checking.
Something is amiss, as I also still have the "lazy" tachometer, which only
reads about 50% of the actual RPM.
Of course,
Can you still zip a zip file? Back in my college days we used to do that, the
email would interrogate the zip and not find anything it didn't like and pass
the file on without interrogating the zip file inside...
