Gerry From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorotrast : Thorotrast is a suspension containing particles of the radioactive compound thorium dioxide, ThO2, that was used as a radiocontrast agent in medical radiography in the 1930s and 1940s. Use in some countries, such as the U.S., continued into the 1950s. Thorium compounds produce excellent images because of thorium's high opacity to X-rays (it has a high cross section for absorption). However, thorium is retained in the body, and it is radioactive, emitting harmful alpha radiation as it decays. Because the suspension offered high image quality and had virtually no immediate side-effects compared to the alternatives available at the time, Thorotrast became widely used after its introduction in 1931. António Egas Moniz contributed to its development.[1] About 2 to 10 million patients worldwide have been treated with Thorotrast. However, today it has shown an increase risk in certain cancers such as cholangiocarcinomas and angiosarcomas of the liver. Safety Even at the time of introduction, there was concern about the safety of Thorotrast. Following injection, the drug is distributed to the liver, spleen, lymph nodes, and bone, where it is absorbed. After this initial absorption, redistribution takes place at a very slow pace. Specifically, the biological half-life is estimated to be 22 years.[2] This means that the organs of patients who have been given Thorotrast will be exposed to internal alpha radiation for the rest of their lives. The significance of this long-term exposure was not fully understood at the time of Thorotrast's introduction in 1931. Due to the release of alpha particles, Thorotrast was found to be extremely carcinogenic. There is a high over-incidence of various cancers in patients who have been treated with Thorotrast. The cancers occur some years (usually 20-30) after injection of Thorotrast. The risk of developing liver cancer (or bile duct cancer) in former Thorotrast patients has been measured to be well above 100 times the risk of the rest of the population. The risk of leukemia appears to be 20 times higher in Thorotrast patients.[3] Thorotrast exposure has also been associated with the development of angiosarcoma. German patients exposed to Thorotrast had their median life-expectancy shortened by 14 years in comparison to a similar non-exposed control group.[4] Thorium is no longer used in X-ray contrast agents. Today, iodinated hydrophilic (water-soluble) molecules are universally used as injected contrast agents in X-ray procedures. The Danish director Nils Malmros's movie, Facing the Truth (original Danish title At Kende Sandheden) from 2002, portrays the dilemma that faced Malmros's father, Richard Malmros, when treating his patients in the 1940s. Richard Malmros was deeply concerned about the persistence of Thorotrast in the body but was forced to use Thorotrast, because the only available alternative (per-abrodil) had serious immediate side-effects, suffered from image quality problems and was difficult to obtain during the Second World War. The use of Thorotrast in Denmark ended in 1947 when safer alternatives became available. Current use Thorotrast has also been used in research to stain neural tissue samples for examination by historadiography.[5] ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] OT: Boots update
I can't remember who suggested neets foot oil with bees wax but as it was raining today I figured I'd take some time with my boots. As always I brushed 'em clean first, then oiled with neets foot. I keep a bottle for lantern pump leathers although the boots took so much I'll need another soon. Mixed up my regular beeswax cut about 50% with the oil. I was pleased how easily it works in, I used to warm the boots with a hairdryer, today just sitting near the wood stove was plenty. They absorbed a lot of the mix easily so I left 'em by the fire (not too close, just to stay warm) for a couple hours to soak, then buffed off the excess. The leather feels softer than before so at least something has happened. Maybe tomorrow I'll give them a shot, certainly Buster didn't like sitting inside all day today but it was blustery and miserable... -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Electrical weirdness
Installed a fully charged battery, big spark when connecting the negative cable. Big draw immediately starts pulling down the battery. Unplugged the glow plug harness so no power can get from relay to plugs. Big drain still there. Left the glow plug harness off, rigged an amp meter, looks like roughly a five amp draw. Now I've got the battery charger on this battery, while I pull fuses and check for the draw to go away. I think the alarm system pulls a big load while it starts up, but that's probably normal. I need to rig up that trouble-shooting light someone described to see if I can speed up the diagnosing step. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 On October 27, 2018 2:34:46 PM EDT, G Mann via Mercedes wrote: >Yes, I believe the result of higher current indicates a shorted cell in >the >battery... Follow up. Didn't have time to look at car until today, so it sat for about eight days. Battery is so low it won't even run the air pump for central locking system, let alone start the car. Remove battery, hook up charger, at the 2 amp setting the charger meter says the battery has almost 90% capacity. Increase the charging current to ten amps, then the meter rapidly falls to only 25% capacity. Does this indicate a bad battery? I'm going to swap in a good fully charged battery, then go for a drive to see if the weirdness is gone. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 On October 18, 2018 9:24:14 PM EDT, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: >Just as you describe - low voltage. > >-D > > >> On Oct 18, 2018, at 9:09 PM, Meade Dillon via Mercedes > wrote: >> >> What would cause all the instrument cluster warning lights to come >on, and >> the ASD (traction control) light to flash, and the ABS light to >flash? >> This happens when I slow down and come to a stop, and the engine >speed >> drops to a low idle.
