Yes, I saw it in the picture and saw it was a V engine and presumed it
was a V-8. But I didn't know M119, M118, or what. Turns out he said M113.

crypler/fiat was smart enough to contract with cummins.   Frod
contracted with IH, then bastardized it to remove some of the IH
reliability.  Then decided to kick NavistarIH and build their own POS.
Shovey built their own POS. It gradually got refined until it was no
longer a complete disaster. Then they decided since they owned isuzi,
they should let the folks that knew how to copy German Diesels make them
an engine.

Seems to me that crypsler and now fiat is the only one that got it right
and stayed there.   But yes, the cummins engone is NOT made by crypsler.

I always thought the 4 cyl (or a 5 cyl) version of the IH/Navistar DT466
engine would make a great light/medium truck engine.  But even though
they prevented the tractor folks from building the German designed
engines, Navistar never built any but the 6 cyl.

2019-05-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
No. There’s no realistic way to get it there, unfortunately.

We gotta have a Florida Q if anyone would ever sign on for one. As I’ve said
before, I’ve got the perfect place for it, a private 60 acre park I can use for
free….

Yeah, I would like to get the spouse into an ML due to ergonomics, but
she’s so smitten with her SL500 I’m not sure I can lure her out of it.

The intent behind this purchase is to acquire a spare or backup vehicle
that I can have in the pocket in the event one of the daily drivers goes
off road due to a repair or issue. My youngest son has pretty well moved
out and taken the 2002 E320 with him, not that it was a backup, but with
all the cars and drivers in the house at the time there was always someone
to back you up. I have a parking place for it a few blocks away at a
friend’s house, so I don’t have to worry about it jamming things up here
 with the limited driveway space.

Icing on the cake is something that can tow, as I’m tired of waiting for
the youngest son to step up and buy a pickup truck as he’s claiming he
wants to do. As much of a tightwad as he is, I’m guessing he’ll be in the
E320 until it dies and he’s forced to buy something of his own. And yes,
it’s got a full blown Reese receiver on the rear and wiring set up for
 towing.

The finnie is progressing well, but I’m getting close to wrapping it up,
maybe 30-40 hours away from completion if that. I want to keep it as a
casual driver and not be a backup car in the event I need something and
the weather is lousy, for example.

The ML500 is enough of a beater and a cheap enough car that I can insure
it here for less than $100/month. That’s not Hagerty price, which it
wouldn’t qualify for anyway, but it’s cheap enough to be able to justify
having it around, and cheap for Florida insurance, too.

And now you can see some photos I took of the ML500 this morning when I
 was giving it a once-over:

2019-05-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Oooh, that’s right, I remember that being an issue for you. Bummer.

Yeah, I’m not ready to pop for a trailer. Youngest son needs to get off his
bottom and find that 15-20 acre homestead he’s been jonesing for. Then I’ll
have a place to store cars and start my own “Okie Acres” south.

it’s got a full blown Reese receiver on the rear and wiring set up for

Yeah I looked into Hagerty but the cars need to be in a garage or something,
not there yet. But it is a LOT cheaper. Soon maybe...

You can probably find a beater trailer for not a lot in the hinterlands. My
used trailer, fairly new, was like $2k but I’ve seen them for quite a bit less.

No trailer - yet. Worst case I rent a UHaul dolly to tow my “MG”, right?

Unfortunately, Florida is a no fault state. You pay big bucks no matter what.
Right now I’m probably paying around $1200-$1400/year for the fully covered
cars (E320, SL500). I think this is going to cost me about $75-$80/month once
my agent can sharpen his pencil and knock all the froo-froo stuff off.

With a Hagerty policy like the finnie has, it costs me $300/year. You could
probably do the same for your SL600.

It’s the curse of living here, but with the youngest off my policy along with
his E320, I’ve saved far more, so my expenses won’t increase.

Re: [MBZ] Am I Being Unrealistic?

2019-05-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
To address the various comments/questions:

Yeah, I would like to get the spouse into an ML due to ergonomics, but she’s so
smitten with her SL500 I’m not sure I can lure her out of it.

The intent behind this purchase is to acquire a spare or backup vehicle that I
can have in the pocket in the event one of the daily drivers goes off road due
to a repair or issue. My youngest son has pretty well moved out and taken the
2002 E320 with him, not that it was a backup, but with all the cars and drivers
in the house at the time there was always someone to back you up. I have a
parking place for it a few blocks away at a friend’s house, so I don’t have to
worry about it jamming things up here with the limited driveway space.

Icing on the cake is something that can tow, as I’m tired of waiting for the
youngest son to step up and buy a pickup truck as he’s claiming he wants to do.
As much of a tightwad as he is, I’m guessing he’ll be in the E320 until it dies
and he’s forced to buy something of his own. And yes, it’s got a full blown
Reese receiver on the rear and wiring set up for towing.

The finnie is progressing well, but I’m getting close to wrapping it up, maybe
30-40 hours away from completion if that. I want to keep it as a casual driver
and not be a backup car in the event I need something and the weather is lousy,
for example.

The ML500 is enough of a beater and a cheap enough car that I can insure it
here for less than $100/month. That’s not Hagerty price, which it wouldn’t
qualify for anyway, but it’s cheap enough to be able to justify having it
around, and cheap for Florida insurance, too.

And now you can see some photos I took of the ML500 this morning when I was
giving it a once-over:

Re: [MBZ] Am I Being Unrealistic?

2019-05-17 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Temporary diversion. I’ve been doing nothing but major work on the Finnie. I
need a break from springs and suspension stuff.

I also need a standby/backup car in the event any of the daily drivers have to
be taken off the road. This is a perfect choice, and I get the ability to tow
with it, too.

That's exactly why he said, "Chrysler products are turds (except the
Cummins engine)."

[MBZ] Clay, Kleb here you go

2019-05-17 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Hey ATL is only about 5 hr away...

On the FB 123 group

Too bad nobody wants to answer the phone!!! If your wanting a project or
needing part’s I’ve found a gentleman who own’s no less than 100 car’s.
He has been ordered by county to do something with them. Most have been
sitting awhile and just need tinkering. I’m no expert but, got these
running with little effort. He’s North of Atlanta and ready to make some
awesome deal’s. Gonna take more pic’s to share. The photo attached shows
a couple 124’s but the 123’s are an ‘85 Couple, needs new back window(in
car) installed and ‘84 sedan. Some need more than other’s but, I found
that they mostly need fuel! Going try get a list of what’s at this
location. He is ready to deal, if interested... of every 5 that gets
operable, he’ll compensate with 1 car! I did 4 today and got a
transmission & engine. FYI, there’s 6 estate wagon’s, 15 sedan’s & 3
Coupe’s at this site alone! If your needing ANYTHING Mercedes from 1975
to present and not far from Atlanta, let me know, and I’ll get you in
contact to make your deal!

Re: [MBZ] Am I Being Unrealistic?

I’d have at least countered at $1200 maybe settled at $1300. But I guess for a
Benny it’s not worth losing much anguish over. Still a decent deal.

This one I got was $1300 with whatever tranny fault it has, it’s in good shape
but a 320. Would the 500 tow more? Does it have a hitch on it?

 Here’s the deal:

 Nearly 200k
Driver’s window has big crack in it
 AC blower motor is bad
Car was dead as it has been sitting for a while
Lots and lots of SDS faults, most cleared but some did not, such as ons
 for the AAM
 Wipers don’t work
 Interior is really filthy
 Needs a major exterior cleaning/polishing
 Drives OK
 Needs two tires
 Rear brakes are sketchy

There are probably a good page list worth of other things, some functional
(lens on passenger side rear view mirror turn signal gone, for example)
 and others cosmetic.

I offered the guy $1000. He countered at $1400. I thanked him for his time

So you think I was being unrealistic? I can take the feedback, I’m OK with
that. I don’t have a point of reference, so I’m not sure if I *was* being
unrealistic - that’s why I asked. I guess if it was a 320 it might not be worth
that, but do you think because it’s a 500 it is?

I will say that it was a wicked fast thing, for sure. Would definitely have to
keep the wife out of it or she might abandon her SL500.

I was thinking about going back to the 240D in Palmetto and offering $1800 if I
was going to drop $1400 on the ML.

[MBZ] Am I Being Unrealistic?

2019-05-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
So I go to look a this ML500 this morning:

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/659169807867662/

Yes, I know it’s on FB, sorry to those who can’t see it.

Here’s the deal:

Nearly 200k
Driver’s window has big crack in it
AC blower motor is bad
Car was dead as it has been sitting for a while
Lots and lots of SDS faults, most cleared but some did not, such as ons for the
AAM
Wipers don’t work
Interior is really filthy
Needs a major exterior cleaning/polishing
Drives OK
Needs two tires
Rear brakes are sketchy

There are probably a good page list worth of other things, some functional
(lens on passenger side rear view mirror turn signal gone, for example) and
others cosmetic.

I offered the guy $1000. He countered at $1400. I thanked him for his time and
moved on. Probably a solid ride, but definitely had issues and lots and lots of
little picky things that needed addressing. That and there were no books, so no
radio code.

Do I need to lower my standards?

Re: [MBZ] Window switches: Solution

2019-05-17 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I dunno my '96 Dakota went 222,000 miles before the body rotted out of it.
That included hauling a 4500# tractor 300 miles, an '85 190D 250 odd miles,
literally tons of firewood many miles. I had it buried to the frame in mud
once, pull started the Farmall a bunch of times, hauled snowmobiles,
uncountable dump runs. That was a great truck.
My current 2010 Dodge Ram has just over 135,000 miles on the clock with not
much more than regular maintenance, it just started to show a little rust which
I'll try to keep up with. Its getting 19-20mpg now on highway trips, did a
little better with less aggressive tires but does better offroad with these.
Its also done a bunch of hauling...
Other than the Challenger which I quite like I find Chrysler cars uninspiring
but I've done real well with their trucks.

You had to reboot the window controller?

If so, why does a window need an electric motor?  And if it has a
motor, what is the value provided by having more than just a
switch?  Inquiring minds want to know!

I ordered the new window switch unit.  (dogde van)  it came in tues, so
I was all excited to get the windows fixed.   Put in the new switch:
same thing.  no driver's window.   !!!XX*&^$@^%#$   So I did more
reading.  Wed night I stumbled over another idea.   Tried that
yesterday, and guess what? Drivers window works with the new switch!!!
Hmmm.  So I put the old switch in.   Driver's window works, both mirrors
work, the rest of the windows work with the old switch.  You'll never
guess what the solution is!

I wonder if a M120 will fit in a 124.  I bet it would as the 129 chassis
is basically a shorter 124.  6L of V12 yums!  This says the 500E has a
129 engine in it, so I'm thinking it would work.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W124

The R129 SL roadster
was based on the W124 platform, and in return, W124 was later equipped
with one of the roadster's engines, creating the 500 E.

That would be kinda special.

Re: [MBZ] I won this auction, a few minutes later seller canceled the order, WTF?

2019-05-17 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Oops, I followed your closed auction link, and the Bay of Fleas showed me a
$1500 rodbender instead.
I hate when they do that.
I go to fleabay so seldom that I always forget they do that, so it keeps
working on me.

I suspect the guy in Oklahoma didn't want to sell it for less than scrap value,
but didn't want to set a reserve because he thought that discouraged bidding.

It comes up with a "similar item" that is at $1550 but if you click the
link on the closed item original listing it comes up with $115.50
winning bid.  Strong work!

10 disk CD changer in the trunk? That doesn't sound factory to me. (or maybe he
can't count that high)

2019-05-17 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
When you click on the link, fleabay pops up a current auction for a
140.  It is at 1550.   You have to work to find the listing you bud on
for $100.

I fell for it too.   A new sneaky trick from fleabay.

So I was high bidder, no reserve, I guess seller did not like the
outcome so they cancelled the order?  Can they do that?  I sent them a
message to see what they have to say.

H didn't notice that.  I guess running the VIN would be the thing to
do, but even so it is likely OK.  Looks like the bumper has the cutout
though, that is what I was keying off.

Looks like this one has the tow package.  170k miles, overpriced at a
