Re: [MBZ] Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory

2019-07-06 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
I put the film on the R107 euro lights. Hard enough finding the glass, so a
worthy investment.

Are the w124 lights on the wagon not the same as those that would have come on
the 94/95 w124? If the glass is a rare or hard to source item, film would
give a modicum on protection. Installation is much the same as application of
window tint. PIA to chase bubbles, so get it right the first time. Make sure
it is perfect, of the dust and schmutz will find a way to accumulate under the
film and between

clay.

Might also be buyer location, though now the state of washington is no longer
honoring purchasers from locals without sales taxes. Used to be you could show
your ID and the merchant would not collect tax. This year you pay the tax and
have to keep your sales papers so you can ask for a reimbursement

Facilitators, like
eBay and Amazon, even if not themselves involved in the transaction, now are

Beats me. I don’t know anything about these later models.

I’m pretty sure he bought this one out of Ft. Wayne, IN. At least the last time
I spoke with him he had bought a later model diesel sedan out of that area and
was waiting for it to be shipped.

I dropped him a note to see what’s up.

The swing axle models will jack in turns, although not horribly. Enough to let
you know you should slow down, but they won't "pogostick" like Corvairs did.

The 280 6.3 had camber limiters and anti-wrap fixtures to keep it from
bunny-hopping too. Good thing, since you could lay down 50 ft of rubber at
least from a standing stop with it.

the W124. The W115 was well known for lack of rear roll oversteer, with the
result that the big fat anti-roll bar up front would load the outside tire to
the point it would unmount and cause a crash.

Not usually a problem in a 220D as you can't go fast enough, but in the other
models it was a problem. The W123 and later cars have a softer anti-roll bar
that produces some rear roll over-steer, so you don't roll the outside front
tire off the rim.

It was fun to crank that old 220D into a hard corner and have it stay very
flat, but rolling the tire off is something I'd rather not experience.

I just bought some Mercedes factory rubber floor mats for the W210 wagon today.
I didn’t get charged sales tax.

I think it depends on the seller.

2019-07-06 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Typically that is the relay that holds the interior lights on for the 30
seconds or so after you close the door. If I remember correctly, it's actually
an electronic relay and the lights go out, but the current draw remains around
1A, more than enough to flatten the battery overnight, or at least over a day
or two.

Pretty common on the W124/6 models, we've replaced a few over the years.

Re: [MBZ] Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory

2019-07-06 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
On the (vanishingly) small victory front, I changed out the multifunction
stalk on the 123 and was feeling cocky, so I got the one off the shelf for
the 124 I have had sitting around for two years waiting for the original to
fail. Keep in mind it had not in fact failed. You already know how this is
going to go - sort of.

The steering wheel removal/airbag detonation issue gave me pause so I
decided to pull the plug in the passenger footwell. Of course it
disintegrated into several pieces when I tried to pull it apart. Not my
finest hour. It slots into a metal plate and the whole back just blew off
the bottom half of the red plug.

So I traded a functional airbag for a new multifunction switch. Maybe
having functional turn signals will help me avoid the accident the airbag
was supposed to save me from. My karma is definitely still running over my
dogma out here.

In other news, that Amazon headlight film is awesome. My mechanic thought I
had painted the whole car when all I did was wash it and put new headlights
in with some of that film on them.

I left the test light in place while I was processing the picture and
writing the email and doing some other things (about half an hour), so
I would say it stays active forever.

Plus, when I bought the car, the guy selling it would get it started by
jumping it, but after running it and charging the battery, a while later
it needed another jump.

It's now time for dinner, so I don't have time to measure the draw.

Have you metered the draw?
It might be clock plus relay coil current.
The question is, should that relay be open at rest, and does it open after a
few minutes or does it stay active forever?

Yes, the W115 '72 220D we had did not have the straight up hood feature.

The hood would, however, very nicely hold a two-tube, four-foot
fluorescent shop light fixture with a length of zip cord tied to its two
ends, thus bathing the engine compartment with light.

The battery mounted in the left front of the engine compartment was very
handy, too. Quite unlike trying to get a battery out of a W123 or W124 ...

There are certainly some mental giants over there, but for the most part
everyone seems to be pretty decent so far. I’ve had a couple of people that
have posted complete falsehoods which I rebutted with facts. I never got
challenged, so they either accepted reality or moved on.

I withheld comment on the slammed W123 yesterday as that’s simply a matter of
taste(lessness) that no matter what I say will never change someone’s mind.

But what about the civilians who live within 100 miles of the base?

After I sent the email, I thought it might be because the Rear Admiral
wanted all of her personnel away from the earthquake area so they would
not have any chance of being in harm's way.

Re: [MBZ] OT Pex

2019-07-06 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
In this case, freezing temps.  It is seasonal.  While I have been
careful about drainage, it is in blueberry country.  (acid soil = acid
water = copper washing away, as well as Iron pipes washing away.)  THe
copper is over 40 yrs old. All the pipes hung below the joists.  Now all
the plumbing is neatly tucked up between the joists.   All the joints I
redid with the permatex clear rtc are holding nicely.  I redid a couple
more last night without leaving the water off for a 1 hour cure time.
They hold even without the cure time.

Another factor was to make as many runs as possible sloped so that when
the bottom manifold is drained, the pipes drain also.  I will have one
sink that will need to be drained separately.  Making the drain process
simple is a big advantage.   My goal was to be able to open two valves
(hot and cold manifolds) and drain the whole thing.

Scott Ritchey via Mercedes wrote on 7/3/19 7:01 PM:

Depends. My well water is slightly acid, not enough to be unhealthy but enough
to eat copper pipes (especially thin wall - type M). The 40-year old copper in
my house developed leaks, especially flexible tubing but the rigid stuff broke
easily too. I replaced all with PEX or black poly for the feed from pump.

-Original Message-
From: OK Don

Perhaps the best "PEX" system is copper tubing??? New is not always better.

[MBZ] Earthquakes in Southern California

2019-07-06 Thread Craig via Mercedes
Lots of things happening due to the recent earthquakes, the most
surprising of which, to me, is:

https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2019/07/06/ridgecrest-earthquakes-naval-air-weapons-station-china-lake/

RIDGECREST (CBSLA) — Multiple earthquakes that struck the Ridgecrest area
left Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) China Lake “not mission capable
until further notice,” the base announced Saturday.

In a Facebook post, officials said Rear Admiral Bette Bolivar issued an
evacuation order for non-essential active duty, drilling reservists,
civilian employees, and dependents to evacuate to a radius of 100 miles
from Naval Base Ventura County.

NAWS China Lake remained accessible to mission essential personnel only.

The alert came hours after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake rattled the
Ridgecrest area on Friday.

A 6.4-magnitude quake shook the same area the day prior, followed by
hundreds of aftershocks.

Evacuate 100 miles from the base?!

July 4 broke their all time high. Made it to almost 90f. Should see 30c

Driving out might be fine the first few days. Lots of night light. Closer to

[MBZ] WTB - 13" Wiper Arm

2019-07-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This is a long shot, but…

I have a pair of mismatched wiper arms on my 1965 220SEb. One is painted silver
and the other is chrome.

I'm trying to find one for a match, which I would gladly trade someone for. I
can buy a new one of either from my German supplier but would just as well swap
one out with someone who needs one. My right side is painted, left side is
chrome.

So I would need a left side painted or a right side chrome.

Thanks!

[MBZ] Joy in Mudville

2019-07-06 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Went out and washed the SL600 this morning and after doing that decided
to see what was going on with the AC not cooling. Dumped a can and a
half of refrigerant in it (after having to use the googs to figure out
where the low side tap was -- hiding under the driver side air box down
low which has to be removed to get at it, things are tight in there) and
lo the AC now BLOWS ICE COLD! Quick and easy once I learned where the
port was.  So that is nice when it rains and I have to have the windows
up as I still have not removed the hard top and sorted out the soft
top.  I'm going to drive it this afternoon, storms around, so that will
be nice if I have to put the windows up.  I'll monitor it, might be some
leaks in the system but for now it is nice and cool on these hot muggy
Lowcountry days and nights.

I also popped on an antenna base cover which I had ordered a coupla
weeks ago.  I ordered what I thought was the right thing some time ago
but it turned out to be the conical rubber "grommet" that the antenna
goes through, that mounts in the fender.  So that looks nice and took 3
seconds, a huge job!

When you get a result, click on the part number to expand the information to
see details. This is handy if the part is out of stock, as it will say so.
Otherwise it just looks like they don’t have it.

I take the number and drop it into MB of Naperville’s parts page to get an idea
of price:

I have not heard of the Mercedes Classic Center parts search engine.

Is there a web link?

Re: [MBZ] hosed

2019-07-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This is a quote of mine from a recent BW Vintage forum post:

However, many of the sites you’ll find online, such as
https://www.mboemparts.com for example, are web
front ends for the dealers that Mercedes offers to them. This particular one is
for MB of Naperville, IL, for example, and they offer very good prices and
often free or discounted shipping.

Watch out for eBay. I say that because there seem to be many sellers there who
are selling NOS parts for stupid money that are readily available from Mercedes
for far less. A good example are the trunk tristars. I’ve seen them offered on
eBay in excess of $100, yet you can buy a brand new one at list price from
Mercedes for under $50.

This is why I use the sequence of:

Look up part in EPC or parts manual

Use Mercedes Classic Center parts search engine to determine availability from
Mercedes

If not available from Mercedes, perform a Google search using the part number
and “Mercedes” - like this : Mercedes 0009896754 This will often yield sources
for both new and used versions, if available. If not, too bad.

Do not use US dealer parts sites for searching parts availability - always use
the Classic Center parts search. Why? Because the dealers are responsible for
maintaining their parts sites, and if they don’t keep them current you’ll often
find a search for a part coming back as good with a price when it was
discontinued a year ago. You won’t find out until you try to order it and they
come back to you a week later to cancel the order.

There’s a definitive method of doing this I have found that has worked for me
for years. You can go your own way, but you’ll burn a lot of calories chasing
down stuff that no longer exists.
