I have one oil change volume of M1 20-50 left for use in the R107. Then I will
be selling her. The diesels have been running store brand 15-50 the past few
years. Might need to toss the six or seven spare gallons of that onto CL while
I wait for a time to rid myself of the SDL

[MBZ] Yet another oil thread - Mobil 1™ Formula M

2019-08-05 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Anybody seen this in stores?
Mobil says I can buy it at O'Reilly in my hometown, but not NAPA, Wal-Mart, etc.

For vehicles requiring a 5W-40 viscosity and specific Mercedes-Benz approvals

Mobil 1™ Formula M 5W-40 is an advanced performance synthetic engine oil
engineered to help prolong the life of both diesel- and gasoline-powered
automobiles that require an oil that is approved against the Mercedes Benz
MB-229.3 and 229.5 specifications.

Thanks Mitch. You are right about viscosity now vs. 40. years, ago.
Actually probably either 5w40 or 15w50 would work for how little i drive
this car.

5w30 is about 12cSt at 100C.
15W50 is 18 cSt.
5W40 is 14.5 cSt.
The only difference I'd expect to see is that the 15W50 will peg the oil gauge
at idle in slightly worn engines.
One thing to consider is the loss of certain valve and rocker protecting
additives with oils formulated for modern engines. The 15W50 has more
phosphorus and zinc in it than any of the other non racing / non motorcycle
formulas of M1.

Last I knew Turbo Diesel Truck was available at Wal-Mart and Meijer for
substantially less than at Autozone/Advance Auto, unless you partake of the oil
change specials at the parts store and they have a filter you want. (the only
Mobil filter for MBZ that I can use is the one that fits M112 engines)
TDT comes in 4qt jugs that cost almost as much as the 5qt jugs of 0W-40. You
need to buy 5 qts to get the rebate.

15W50 comes in 5qt jugs at Wal-Mart, they have it in my small town store.
I assume 15W Mobil One is OK for OM-616/617 in winter, it's got to flow better
than the 10W40 that was available to us 40 years ago.

As somebody else mentioned 15w50 would be just fine too. I think I finally
used up the last jug of that I had bought for a 240D. I put it in my lawnmower

Re: [MBZ] Triggering an Oil Thread [was: Re: W123 FB Idiot]

2019-08-05 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I use the same Traveler 15w40 in my 1952 Farmall Super M although I buy it in
2.5 gallon jugs. A year or two ago I had the valve cover off to replace the
gasket, the rockers were all perfectly clean. I attribute that to my use of
high detergent oil. When I first started using it I changed the oil way more
often than was probably required to be sure all the sludge from years of
non-detergent oil got pulled out.
Now I change it every other year. If that machine gets 30 hours a year I'd be
surprised...

I would use 15W50.  It is hard to find around here, so for a
number of years now I have been using Traveler (Tractor Supply

decent oil, and relatively low cost, so I just change it more
often than if it was "real" synthetic.

purchase a new BIOS chip to recognize a hard drive. I used it for about
three years with a full length AVL Genesis daughter board that ran CP/M to
program multi project slide shows. That was a lot of fun and paid well

I would use 15W50. It is hard to find around here, so for a
number of years now I have been using Traveler (Tractor Supply
house brand) 15W40 bought in 5 gallon buckets. Seems to be a
decent oil, and relatively low cost, so I just change it more
often than if it was "real" synthetic.

I have an ancient cheapo that I rarely use. I don't have any robusta at the

Dark roast and made with a proper espresso machine give you very nice coffee,
anything else and that robusta flavor is all you can taste.

If you like it, not a problem, but I do not.

2019-08-05 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
The issues with the 787 appear to be sloppy manufacture, not design defects. I
think it's fair to assume that if the assembly crew is leaving tools and trash
on the planes the actual assembly is probably suspect as well. Something about
attention to detail, I think.

Boeing may yet regret moving their assembly plants to areas of historically low
wages and no recent aerospace construction, it's not quite like tossing sloppy
out of square cinder block foundations together.

Sorting alogrithms and very large lookup tables do not equal intelligence. Ask
people about the "reliability" of facial recognition software, widely touted as

Mediocre at best, and nearly useless for non-caucasions.

Fast processors and giant look-up tables do not equal intelligence, and never
will. All the "intelligence" in there is provided by the computer programmer.

I have a Bialetti grinder that I like pretty well. It has an adjustable
grind.

I also have a JavaPresse grinder that was OK but slow. I use it as a
pepper grinder now.

Finally got around to putting a three pronged plug on it a few months ago.

"Jeff" has a place down the road in the luxury gated resort lifestyle
community.  Purchase of the house was an interesting story.  A friend
worked for him at GE, was a big shot, and he and "Jeff" golf together a
lot over at the gated luxury lifestyle resort community.  My sense is
that "Jeff" is "special" (or at least thinks he is).

The Doppler effect is the change of pitch (frequency) perceived when the
source of the sound and the receiver (hearer) are moving relative to each
other. If they are moving in unison down the road (at the same speed) the
pitch will be unaltered and will be the same whether the hearer is in
front of or behind the motorcycle.

Now, if they really wanted to alert the people in front of them, their
pipes' outlets would face forward so the majority of the sound would be
heard by those in front of them.

I have had that happen, too, even in New Mexico. Yes, it's very scary.

Back in the mid-70s, my buddy and I got our pilots license is in my dad’s
Cherokee Warrior. As the 70s came to a close, he kept flying and I thought it
was more fun to spend my money on cars and weed.
Now he flies the long halls in the 787. Dallas to Tokyo, Dallas to Sydney,
Dallas to Hong Kong, Dallas to Dubai. We talked about this the other day and he
says that he has thousands and thousands of hours in the the 787 And there has
never been even a hint of an issue. But he did agree that he “flys” more than
the younger pilots do.

Their idea is that loud pipes will alert motorists around them that a

The reference to doppler is really just that the sound of the pipes when it

Re: [MBZ] Robusta

2019-08-05 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
There is a local coffee place called “Buddy Brew”, with “Buddy” being a large
Labrador as their mascot.

They just recently opened a place a couple blocks away from my office. We went
in to check it out a few weeks ago, and the barista or whatever they are were
telling us all about their roasts, etc., etc. I told them I had heard their big
seller was a form of Kopi Luwak using “Buddy” as the vehicle.

It took the guy a few seconds for this to sink in, after which he was far less
accommodating.

Hee.

As I recall, toshibas form the 1995 -1998 timeframe do NOT boot with a

big bucks.   Yes, nicad.
