[MBZ] Rusty sprinters

2019-08-31 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks, I think that Boston $3k sprinter is more rusty than my Mennonite one.
And mine has a tommylift big platform gate that is unfortunately only 1000
pound rated

When I went to remove the Pennsylvania license plate, I got into a nightmare
scenario It was attached with stainless steel machine Phillips headed screws
driven into the probably 1/4 inch thick sealed square tube tommylift bumper and
taillight assembly the factory taillights on mine look to be disabled.
Anyway, the screws wouldn’t come out. I tried the usual abusive tricks like
striking them with a hammer and using a screwdriver and hammer in one of the
slots. Vice grips slid off of them, they were sort of panheaded with little
slope. Finally, I gave in and found the creme brûlée bernzomatic torch and
heated the hell out of them for about five minutes. After another strike with
the hammer, I removed them with some difficulty and a screwdriver

This is why I hate fusty vehicles!

I just got a new phone on Republic and was unable to get another CDMA phone

I've been very satisfied, especially since they switched me to the CDMA net

With reliable cell at home now, I switched my home phone to OOMA (premium

One would assume that the issue would be the need for the phone to be Verizon
compatible and support VoLTE (4G voice calling)

I didn't realize until this spring that a lot of "4G-LTE" phones were set up
for 4G data and 3G CDMA speech, which Verizon is no longer allowing MNVOs to
activate due to the planned shutdown of retail CDMA voice service. My favorite
little Samsung, bought just last summer, is on the 'do not activate or
reactivate' list, along with my mom's ZTE that I bought new in October. Verizon
quit activating them at the start of June, with CDMA service scheduled to
terminate on New Year's. I've since heard that Verizon delayed that for a year,
but Tracfone still won't let me reactivate my Samsung, although it still works
if I stick an active Verizon SIM in it.

That ZF 6 speed is 4 speeds plus O/D plus creeper.
Unless you're hauling a big load you start out in 2nd.
The shift knob is marked L-5.

IIRC, there were early 2001 with 235 hp and later ones with something like
275hp.
A friend of mine bought one new in October 2001, turns out it was sitting on
the lot for 13 months because of the manny tranny and was the old 235hp engine.
His nephew has it now. XLT, 2WD, long bed 4 door supercab (crew cab has bigger
doors that open independently, Supercab/extended cab you have to open front
doors first. It had the turning radius of a battleship and would get stuck on
wet grass with the slightest uphill, even with LSD.

I'd sure like it! 7.3, crew cab, 4WD, manual, long bed. The
interior looks "soft". I like more utility for pickups - but this
combination is not terribly common. It's rather far away, so the
sell price would have to be pretty low for me to be able to pull
it off.

> semi.

Like a big truck, you don't have to use all the ratios all the
time. Though most big trucks have a lot more than 6. I did drive
a straight shift (not dual range) 7 speed about 25 years ago. It
was a lousy truck in the hills but managed okay with less than
40,000# and not leaving the great plains.

9 and 10 speeds are pretty common for fleet trucks. 13 speed is
a nice to drive, but usually is not in fleet trucks - often found
on Owner Operator rigs. If it works offroad (dump trailer,
low-boy, over-size) 15 and 18 speed transmissions are the way to
go.

I've owned 3 of them, same configuration, except automatic. a 99, 01, and
an 03, all with the 7.3 Diesel [built by International, sold by Ford] .
Loved them. worked them, never had a mechanical issue.

Presently own 2 with 7.3, and 1 with 6.0 [2005] all are going strong, one
now has almost 400,000 miles of work on the clock.
Couldn't open your link successfully, but if it works well and is priced
well.. you will have a decent truck for as long as you want a truck.

If it is stuck because it is gummed up, try soaking it in 100% BioDiesel.
100% Bio is a powerful cleaning agent when it comes to such thingsalso
works on concrete driveways with oil stains... Since it's "Bio" it's "eco
friendly" when you wash it off.

some good storm, wind, surge, and flooding but it will be less than a direct

[MBZ] 201 fuel sender unit

2019-08-31 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I pulled the fuel tank sender on this 190D to clean it because it is
stuck.  I have fixed many of these and they all have a plastic nut on
the bottom you unscrew with a pair of pliers.  I have never done a 201
sender. This 201 has a flat disk thing on the bottom that does not seem
to turn.  I decided to pull one out of another 190D I have and it is
stuck too so I figured I would try to remove this one.  Same thing.  It
does not even seem like it is intended to turn.  I ground it off with
the bench grinder but the bottom still does not come off.  I set it in
the bench vice not clamped down to try and pop the end off.  I got the
end to pop off but in the process bent the tube, so it is trash.

I dropped the original one in the parts washer and will let it set in
there until next week. I am doubtful this will clean it up but figured I
would try.  Is there some trick to getting this thing apart?

It is free online from MB, Star Tek Info. Don't have link handy, but it is
really clunky because it is just like the CD version with the awkward and slow

One has to go through each phone and the following options of where it was

AT&T

Verizon
Sprint
Unlocked
International

"Unlocked", I presume, would show the greatest possibility of operability.

Yep, my thoughts also, It has "bones" for a full restoration, with a proper
engine and transmission.. .notice the chevy truck like floor shift lever

Perhaps, it hasn't been to mangled.. I think the engine parts in the back
trunk are original engine?

Buy it cheap.. spend about $80K to make it a full original, and only lose
$40K when you sell it.. I'm still drawn to it.

[MBZ] $600E320

2019-08-31 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
So I just talked to this woman who is selling this E320 with the trans
problem.  Sounds like she has thrown a fair amount of money at it.  It
was running rough so she had a "tuneup" done at an indy sounds like (has
the receipt) but then the trans acted up worse and worse.  They replaced
the TCU apparently (so they said) which did not cure the problem, so
then she took it to a trans shop and they said it was the conductor
plate and quoted her $800 to fix it ($80 part, maybe 2hr work, some
fluid and filter...).  So she figures it is a $1400 car...

Depending on this storm I am going to go get it, she said it was well
maintained, everything works on it, has new tires 6 months ago (some off
brand she couldn't remember but I have these new Kumhos I put on the
$500E300 I could swap if they are crap).  She says it leaks or burns oil
a bit, but has not been a problem to top it off occasionally, 260kmi.
It is stuck in limp mode so it at least runs and drives, she can't
remember if the CEL is one or not.  Looks pretty good and clean in the pics.

Those are good to have around, but not living in the car.  My poodle was
out with me the other day and took great interest in this tree out
front.  It is an old oak, has some voids in it, he was trying to get up
into one about 4ft off the ground.  I looked in there and saw a possum
nose sticking out. They are all over the place.

Re: [MBZ] W210 Diesels?

2019-08-31 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
That looks pretty good for a white car.  Good power, good fuel mileage
-- I was getting 28 in the $500E300 but I know it could do better, I
just didn't fool with it.

When I got it I had to take off the intake manifold and EGR and debugger
it, car was barely running as the EGR was completely crapped up.  Was
like a Sunday afternoon of work.

Re: [MBZ] What do you think? 2000 Mercedes Benz E430 - $1000

2019-08-31 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
So this woman with the E320 with trans issue (limp mode) posted it again
after she told me she was waiting to get a replacement title sent.  I
happened to see it posted again this morning (WTF?)  so got hold of her,
said she would let it go for $600.  I think she was down in the $500s a
coupla weeks ago, but whatever. Car looks decent, worse comes to worse I
could swap the $500E300 tranny into it and it would be good to go, but
it is probably something fairly easy to deal with, connector, conductor
plate, solenoids or something like that.

I was kinda liking the 210 so another cheap one to replace the $500E300
until I decide to fix it up, and have the time, would be OK, I could
flip this E320 if I ever got the diesel going again, maybe even make a
few $$, who knows.  Rather have a diesel but compromises...

She is down near Savannah and this hurricane is headed our way now, so I
might be a little occupied the next few days dealing with that but I
told her I could send a deposit until I could fetch it.

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/388477685168971

Looks like the E430 is gone, seems like it had the same issues.

Re: [MBZ] Meet Google Fi, a different kind of phone plan

2019-08-31 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Good to know. I wasn’t aware of this, as I had looked at the Google thing a
while back while searching for an alternative for one of the boy’s phone plans.

And Mitch - the Spectrum plan allows tethering, at least I don’t see anything
in the agreement that doesn’t permit it. That’s what I’ll be doing with my iPad
once I get it off of the Verizon plan at the end of the billing cycle - I can’t
believe I wasn’t astute enough to realize that I could just tether it to my
phone whenever I needed LTE service for it. Duh!
