Re: [MBZ] OT Dorian Damage

2019-09-05 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Next time you have a drip drip drip issue, try this.
You will need a thumb tack, some kitchen twine, a bucket and a rock.
Push in the thumb tack at just below the drip, use it to secure the upper
end of the kitchen twine, gently tension the twine so it makes a straight
line into the bucket, weight the bottom end with the rock [or any kind of
weight].

The drip will run down the string, into the bucket, quietly... as long as
the twine is wet, surfact tension of the water droplets will keep the drops
attached.

pickup. Car sold. Now it’s back with a new seller for $3k. Maybe I should offer
$500.

When I was doing big predator hunting, we had some success with snagging bear.
Slogging through the clear cuts and logging roads, and one would amble along
needing to be turned into steak and sausages. Pretty hard to bring in a

Re: [MBZ] OT: Fear the Canadian black bear!

2019-09-05 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
We're having a lot more bear on dog attacks around here and lots of nuisance
bear problems. Nobody has bird feeders much anymore because the bears will rip
down.
The state mouths that bear hunting is allowed but then makes it hard, they
don't allow dogs here in MA and make baiting difficult. If you can't bait and
can't use dogs you're not going to shoot a bear pretty much ever.
I fear nuisance bears will continue to be a bigger and bigger problem until
somebody reverses fish and game's rectal/cranial inversion. If you don't hunt
them they'll continue to breed and be an increasing problem.

Black bear kills Minn. woman in rare attackPublished: Thursday, September

A black bear has killed a Minnesota woman on a secluded island in Canadian
waters in an attack that experts call extremely rare.

Catherine Sweatt-Mueller, 62, of Maple Plain, was staying with her parents
in a remote cabin on Red Pine Island in Rainy Lake when she was killed,
Ontario Provincial Police said.

Police Constable Jim Davis said Sweatt-Mueller went outside Sunday evening
when she heard her two dogs barking, but she never returned, the Minneapolis
 *Star Tribune* reported

.

The dogs, one of them injured, returned to the cabin. Her parents, who are
in their 80s, also were on the island, and her mother called police, Davis
said. Officers found a bear standing over Sweatt-Mueller's body and shot
the animal.

Davis told the Associated Press yesterday that he could not say what caused
the attack. While authorities typically handle complaints about bears
rooting through garbage summer through fall, he said there have been no
reports of bears attacking people.

"The family is, of course, very devastated," Davis said. "The officers on
the scene were fairly devastated to deliver the news. ... We can't believe
a bear attacked a person."

The bear is being sent for testing at the University of Guelph, and a
necropsy will be performed to help determine whether there were any
physical reasons for the bear's abnormal behavior, Maimoona Dinani, a
spokesperson for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry,
said in a statement. No one witnessed the attack, Dinani said.

"Attacks of this nature are extremely rare and our hearts go out to the
family and friends of the victim," Dinani said. The last fatal bear attack
in Ontario was in 2005.

Minnesota wildlife biologist Andy Tri says a predatory attack by a black
bear is "beyond extremely rare."

On average, a fatal attack by a black bear happens about once a year in all
of North America, said Dave Garshelis, a bear research scientist with the
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Fatal attacks by the more
aggressive grizzly bear, which has a narrower range than the black bear,
happen about twice a year in North America, Garshelis said.

Black bears tend to be timid around people, Garshelis said, but bears can
become aggressive toward dogs and can charge after a dog that is being
walked by its owner. *— Associated Press*

My car might drip an odd drop but you wouldn't have to give me oil if I
was able to come.

One of you folks, maybe Curley, suggested a cable arrangement into the

Yeah the town fathers and community ASSociation booted they asses. Both Keewaw

for significant issues. I think they do have trees down, there’s really only
one road on keewaw so if it’s blocked no one gets by.

I was gonna go check on a buddy’s house but there was a patrol guy there by the

One of you folks, maybe Curley, suggested a cable arrangement into the
car so that I could just pull on the cable to shut off the fuel without
opening the hood.

If I hadn't already obtained the part, I might have gone for that. It
seems very simple and basic. Use a choke cable or something similar. A
knob under the dash would be unobtrusive.

Why rely on vacuum when a simple cable would do the job. Maybe a bell
crank so it could pull straight?

And thanks for not picking on me Curt!!

Re: [MBZ] I Want

2019-09-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
On a Jag, yes - on these cars, for the most part, no. The later M120 is a
pretty solid engine, the only issue being one of cost when it comes to repairs
or maintenance, mainly because there’s a lot more stuff due to the larger
engine displacement. The M120 is as good an engine as it’s smaller counterpart,
the M119. There’s just more of it which makes it more expensive to maintain.

The real beauty of this car is that it’s nearly the last year of production, so
all of the refinements that the W140 got over it’s design life are incorporated
into the car. It’s got the later electronic transmission (722.6xx), good
wiring, no evaporator issues, COP ignition, etc., etc. 1998 and 99 were the
ideal years for any W140, regardless of the model. Tommy’s 1998 S420 was a
perfect example - it had over 300k when it got passed on to another owner, it
was still going strong and everything worked on it.

However, due to the age of the car I’m betting the ortho seats probably don’t
work as the bladders are usually leaking by now and replacements are NLA. If
the rear sunshade isn’t working it’s in the same category, as parts for it are
NLA. There’s other things to look for, but I can’t think of any other systems
that don’t have parts available or are unobtanium.

And no, Curley, the money isn’t burning a hole in my pocket. Costs from the
finnie will get reimbursed to their appropriate accounts and the profit will be
split up a number of ways, with a nice pile going to the wife for a shopping
spree (I like to hand her the cash and then say, “Are you buying ANOTHER
car??”), some to address current expenses on the existing fleet, and the
remainder to investments for potential future restoration projects. None of it
touches working capital, which comes from a completely different account.

I’m not really looking for anything right now, but in all honesty if I could
score that W140 for maybe $6k I would seriously consider it - if everything on
it checked out. The current ask of nearly $9k isn’t outrageous in today’s
market, but a lot hinges on the details, few if any are revealed in the
Craigslist ad. Something in the current stable would have to go, which would
probably be the 1998 S210. It’s too darned expensive to insure cars in Florida
to have a driveway full of them, unfortunately.

We’ll see.

Wind is pretty much done, lots of very small debris from the flora. Still
raining, only damage seems to be leaky roof (sheet rock damaged inside) and a
leaky window. Already started claim with Insco.

Clean up will be heavy work.

I really don’t need another car, but this is definitely one on my bucket list.

Just took a walk around the vast estate, lots of smaller branches down,
some larger branches and small dead pine tree trunks, nothing
significant.  Might need to take my chainsaw to one branch but other
than that it is raking.  Off on my bike to the beach now, wind has died
down, just a bit of rain, it's actually pretty nice out.

in the back dog yard but fell between house and garage so lucky on that. No
other trees down I can see from porches and windows.

Ahh the early days when it rained every stinking year.
I remember that Tom always had to open the hood to shut the car off. I find the
dedication to not fixing that kind of endearing which is why I don't pick on
Randy for his. :)
I don't remember what was wrong with Tom's car that last year but it sure was
leaking bad...

Think so? I'm of the mind that a well kept example is worth more no matter the

If I were in the market I'd jump right on that. Seems like CD prices have

Re: [MBZ] OT Dorian Damage

2019-09-05 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
A good report!

I managed to get another couple hours of sleep with drip drip drip, no
other damage visible inside the house yet.

I think I hear some neighbors alarm going off.

Electricity has blinked off / on a few times since yesterday, but has held
on. We also get a brown out occasionally.

I'll go take a look to see how the cars are doing out in the driveway,
probably lots of little branches have fallen. The way the wind will shift
as this thing goes buy will present minimal risk to a tree strike in my
drive, there is a big gumball tree which supposedly is quite strong and
resistant to hurricane winds.

Re: [MBZ] OT Dorian Damage

2019-09-05 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I slept for a bit so I could get up to check on the 2AM tide. Woke up
just before 1AM and power promptly went off at 1254AM. Seems like it was
off all over about then from local FB group reports so wasn't just me
though I thought I heard the fuse blow again out by the road (sounds
like a 12g going off when that thing lets go).  Got the generator
running a little while ago for fridge, some lights, computer/internet
UPSs.  Sun is rising so guess I will make a reconnoiter soon.

I did go out a little after 1AM but did not look like there was much
tide though here I am probably 30min-1hr behind, but if there was any
appreciable surge it should have been up higher than I saw out in the
marsh.  I did not want to spend a long time, it was actually kinda
terrifying, rain was coming in spurts and wind gusts, which were not
that strong, but the trees were shedding branches and such.  I put on my
bike helmet to at least protect my cabeza, not that a big branch hitting
me would get much resistance.  I have a hardhat in the truck, I'll get
that out this morning.

The acorns from the oak trees around the house are also pelting the
metal roof, that makes for constant tattattattat as they hit. I did
sleep a bit through the night until a bit before 6AM, but I was waking
to hearing big howling wind gusts and loud thumps of I guess big trees
going down somewhere in the woods all around.

I guess I survived, we'll see what the day looks like and the 2:30PM
high tide.  I have not yet checked the storm status, I guess it will be
more rain, wind, and tide.  But for now Guinness and I are OK though he
does not like going outside to do his business.

Some tea and toast and fruit now, then out to see what I might see in
the daylight...
