Thanks. Good to know it's a regular 49. That was the only one I could find at
Pepboys.

I've used 26R and 24R, but never heard of 49R before.
One of my Tauri, I think the 1995, took a 26R and the other one took a 26.
No idea why Ford kept the size the same but reversed the cables between Taurus
generations.

Yea the group 49/H8 is what is used in must about all the cars. BTW it
is also $119 at Walmart.  WM also has the AGM version for $149 in case
anybody is interested.

I have done several sets of inner bushings with the HF tool and a ball peen
hammer to peen open the sleeve that holds the two halves together.

Do yourself a favor and get four of the eccentric bolts for adjusting the
inner control arms, they are probably rusted solid in the old joints and

Most of my MBs have exactly enough cable to reach the terminals on a 49. Move

Is that really a 49Reversed, and if the terminals are facing you the POS is on

The firewall on my router won’t let it send anything out without my approval. I
check the manufacturer’s web site to see if there are firmware updates, and
when there are I let it download them or I pull them down and side load them
with a USB stick.

If I don’t want something to phone home, it’s blocked at the edge of my
environment.

One wonders at the expense of R/R the engine and interior (!) to repaint a

I have a "smart tv"   I want a dumb tv that does not send data all over
creation.  We have a working agreement: I never plug in the enet.  It
never sends info anywhere.   Works just fine!

Yeah the built-in apps are kinda clunky.  I have a firestick and
AppleTV on my TVs so can get most anything.  I do OTA sometimes but my
antennas are buried in the forest and the transmitters are a long way
off, so that is spotty a good deal of the time.

Re: [MBZ] For when Poos moves into his new house

2019-11-05 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
When/if I ever replace our 58" Panny plasma it'll be an OLED. Nothing else
even remotely
approaches the video quality of a good plasma. OLED actually beats it. There
have only
been five different consumer display technologies: CRT, Plasma, LCD, DLP, and
OLED.
The rest are all variations and marketing hype.

The applications on our 2010 'smart' TV have all died, one by one. Maybe one
of them
still works, I'm not sure. What is not appreciated is that they stop
supporting a TV shortly
after release, and as services move, change, and die, so does the utility of
your TV.

Fortunately its tuner still works, and it's an excellent HDMI monitor for the
Apple TV.
It also works well with the LD, DVD, and BluRay players.

seven years old and starting to show artifacts. I’m happy with it for the most

Re: [MBZ] For when Poos moves into his new house

2019-11-05 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I am thinking about replacing my current 10 year old 73” DLP with a new TV. It
seems like it sort of flickers from brighter to darker at times. Not all the
time but most of the time. Sometimes it is barely noticeable. The picture was
getting darker and I noticed this before. Bulb was original so I replaced it
last week. It seemed to brighten the picture overall but it still does the
bright/darker flicker. Seems like it might be more notifsble now with the new
bulb. I am looking at 75” ones in the $699-$999 or so range. I’m sure those
are the lower end models but it would be a huge improvement over what I
currently have I am sure.

If I was to buy a new TV for the house, new or current, it would be one of
those QLED TVs. I’ve looked at them at Costco and the images are amazing.

So I believe. OTOH, the electronics will probably take the vehicle permanently
out of service anyway.
The reduction in fleet service life due to tempering might not be noticeable.

Re: [MBZ] 124/201 ball joint tool

2019-11-05 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Hot stamped will be hardened, cold stamp will be only work hardened.

There are other things to consider as well:

Heating to red hot softens the steel, which can easily result in opening up the
hole where the joint is pressed, usually making it slightly oval since you are
heating on one side. Now the press fit isn't a press fit any more, and the
joint can come loose more easily.

You can also induce or expand cracks by heating only one portion of the control
arm, resulting in sudden failure as the crack grows.

I've been in more than one auto shop where a customer was informed that unless
the part the customer heated trying to get a ball joint out was replaced with
new the shop would NOT work on the car. Way too much liability.

A good press tool does the job in a couple minutes, no heating, hammering, or
other destructive things need be done.

Just like wailing away on a tie rod end socket instead of using the two hammers
trick. Pinch type ball joint tool works far better.

2019-11-05 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Philip,

The color in the chart on the second link (SMEX) that is about where I
ended heating was in the brown red to blood red color. My friend did talk
about what kind of steel and whether or not is was already tempered as big
factors, and we decided that these control arms are probably not tempered
or hardened, and that was why the heat / cool cycle was not a concern.

So, how can we determine if the control arms were tempered / hardened?
