2019-11-19 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Any MB Fahrtzoid 6zyl Diesel should be able to adequately power a
peekup.   OM603, 606, and the newer V models shoould work.  Of course
with the newer ones, you'd also have to transplant the black boxes and
deal with nannies until you could get it to run.

BTW, Fahrtzoit is your word of the day.   KHD used it extensively to
segregate variable speed Diesel engines from constant speed engines,
such as for generators, water pumps, etc.   F912 series, F913 series, etc.

I rode in a IH pickup with an OM636 and a 5 spd crashbox.   It was
adequate.   OM616 was used quite a bit in boats.  Probably OM615 also.

I believe I have seen utube videos etc about transplants into Toyota

What else is out there? I am curious as to whether there would be

I've never been all that excited about the power to weight ratio of a 617 in
stock form. I'd want to wind it up a bit for use in a truck. A 60x would
probably be a better choice.
Jeep guys use mostly TDI engines because they're teeny by comparison. Even the
old VE engines can do 150hp with some modest tweaks...
The 1980s vintage PB100 Pisten Bully snow groomers used a 617 engine...

I've thought about an OM617 in my 2004 Frontier. It's a V6 4WD with a
5-speed. The gearing seems about right based on engine RPMs at the shift
points.

In the specific case of my Frontier, though, it's too rusty for me to
want to invest that much work in it. Also there's nothing wrong with its
V6 engine. It's the best part of the vehicle.

For Toyotas, there are adapter kits here:

2019-11-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m not surprised that someone has marinized a Mercedes diesel, but I wouldn’t
expect them to be terribly popular due to the limited output.

I’ve never worked with propulsion engines in a boat but I’ve done lots of work
with marine generators, which aren’t a lot different as far as the
modifications necessary to make them work in a marine environment. My takeaway
from the experience made me convinced that a boat is not something I would ever
care to own - unless it was something like a canoe. The adage about them being
"large holes in the water you pour money into” is as true as the one about
there being no such thing as a “cheap Mercedes”…

Re: [MBZ] MB Engine Transplants?

2019-11-19 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
There is a company in Scandinavia that has kits for marinzing for Mercedes
diesels. Its not too uncommon to see 602s as marine engines in Europe.
But they're fairly low output compared to any engine we'd find here in the
states in most boats. Its hard to compete with a Mercuriser V8 in terms of
horsepower. And boats like trawlers that have lower horsepower needs are
better served by large slow turning engines that last forever, like Ford
Lehman diesels.

I too would like to retrofit a MB diesel into a boat, having been around
boats for most of my life. But finding a combination of boat and engine
that makes is difficult. As Dan said, the exhaust is a major issue.
Building one yourself isn't simple... its pretty easy for the engine to
swallow up sea water when conditions are not perfect.

“Marinizing” an engine, that is, making it suitable to operate in a boat, is a
very tricky business and typically involves some serious modifications to an
engine, primarily in the cooling and exhaust systems. A water cooled exhaust
manifold would be required, along with a heat exchanger (closed system) or not
(open system). You would also need to set up an accessory drive for the raw
water pump as well.

Far more complex than dropping it into another over the road vehicle, I would

That's smarter, all the donor parts could be of value. Much easier to
transport to your transplant location.

Consider using an OM603 or OM606 turbo engine, which can provide a lot of
the torque needed to move a pickup in a more satisfactory manner.

An OM606 turbo would need a mechanical injection pump from a 603 to make an
easier swap.

The G300D had a 617, I would guess that thing is about the same weight

be OK in a P/U with proper gearing for a farm truck but for everyday use
probably not pleasant. Apparently transplants into the Toyotas is

I believe I have seen utube videos etc about transplants into Toyota
4Runners or something similar and I think that Jim had a Mazda pickup
with a MB diesel that someone had put into it that he traded to his
brother or something like that.

What else is out there? I am curious as to whether there would be
sufficient power available if one were to put one in something like a
full size 2WD Chevy pickup.

One step further - how about putting one in a boat?

Technically I sold it to him, for exactly what I paid, in exchange for his
interest in Dad's Ford diesel.
Its smaller size better suits his needs than mine, and vice-versa. The actual
payment will
come at final reckoning of the estate, so nobody's ponying up anything in this
deal.

My guess is that it would feel underpowered, especially with today's
expectations.
It probably would not actually drive any worse than an older pickup with a
straight 6 in it.

That truck was far less drivable than it should have been. I suspect
ALDA/turbo problems,
and the gearing might not have been optimal. It worked, though. The lack of
the double
mount via engine subframe was quite apparent, there was a LOT of vibration.
The whole
effect was FAR less pleasing than the 200D sedan. But, it WAS a pickup and it
DID have
4wd and a manual tranny. And, fairly unique. Still cool, in other words, in
spite of the issues.

Around here I've seen diesel with green, yellow, or black nozzle
handles. Gasoline with black, yellow, or red.

Can't go by nozzle color.
