Re: [MBZ] OT - User Friendly

2019-11-22 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Yes, it was very confusing the first time I had a toada rental car and
needed to turn on the headlights.  No headlight switch to be found
anywhere.  Not on the left side of the dash, not on the right side of
the dash.

They put headlights, wiper switch, washers etc on the turn signal, of
course!

Everyone would look on the turnsignal switch for headlights and wipers
in 1985, or whenever it was.

I like how the story  ended: We have to become cannier, more critical
consumers of the user-friendly world. Otherwise, we risk blundering into
more crashes that we’ll only understand after the worst has already
happened.

To  resist someone else doing the thinking for you is not the same as
being a luddite.   I learned long ago to challenge the underlying
ASSumptions, and to challenge the "normal" and to think differently, all
while trying to understand the basis for prevailing norms.

This may not be off topic, but I found the article interesting enough
to go look for the book

https://www.wired.com/story/how-dumb-design-wwii-plane-led-macintosh/

I wonder how much the dumbing down of the user experience has impacted
the newer model cars. I had to drive SWMBA’s ‘yota of choice to class
today and was boggled at getting accessories to function the way I
required (wipers, heat). Years of driving Mercedes had me trained as
to where things I needed to have function belonged. And those systems
had been in those exact locations over at least a 50 year period. I am
not sure if they remain there today, but I am sure I could sit in any
Benz built since 1960 and knobs and buttons would be where they
belonged, and I could drive right off. Not so with this car. Too many
buttons and whistle features I could not figure out. Even worse, the
“yota I am supposed to be driving will not arrive for two more weeks,
and I will not be back to ANC until 2020 to learn all its tricks.

I will be so pleased to get behind the wheel of the SDL and transport
myself in comfort for the next six weeks.

I have a bunch of plastic bottles from Shirley's blood sugar test strips
as shown in the pictures. The lids seal tightly (air tight) when they are
closed and, with the flap on the side opposite the hinge, they are easy
to open.

They are 1.180" OD, 2.076" high outside with the lid closed, 0.975" ID,
and 1.800" high inside.

I have not thought of anything useful to do with them, but they seem too

Now, I was not suggesting anything untoward . . .
I thought Gerry might have some cute granddaughters or great
granddaughters etc.
I have a couple of cute granddaughters. One lives nearby but is not
quite 3 yet. The other lives a long way from me so I likely will not get
to train her to find right wrench.

Either that, or you need a pretty young assistant who can fetch wrenches

Ugh. Looks like you have to drive on I-294 to get there. Sorry to see that. I
really, really hate the TriState Tollway.

While driving back to WI from visiting family in Indianapolis one holiday
season we were going across I-90 through Gary and East Chicago late at night,
my favorite time to drive. Oldest son was sleeping in the Suburban and happened
to wake up. He’s glued to the window looking at the refineries and steel mills
lining Lake Michigan, all lit to the hilt as you would expect, smoke streaming
from their stacks. Looked pretty surreal, and always does.

“Dad, does Hell look like this?”

“Possibly. But it probably smells better."

I would expect that many conveyors would keep you busy all the time.

Remember, Randy is probably talking Canadian dollars, where we think in US
dollars.

The $150 does seem high, especially considering you can get a new one for
US$250 or less.

They only had 300SE in the early years in the US. In later ones they had S320
and I believe they had a LWB version.

it is and go take a look at it if it is still there. I have a vague idea

A few years back a friend (who has subsequently passed away
unfortunately) told me he had gone to look at a Mercedes that had been
stored for a long while in a building of some sort. He said that when he
first walked in, he was quite impressed as the car looked good. Then he
looked under it and said it was really rusty. The building had no floor
and it was parked on dirt. He assumes that it was damp a lot of the time
and that was the cause of the rust. It might also have been driven in
the winter in salt and not kept clean. In any event, he did not buy it
and probably no one else did either.

Good for you  Gerry. I am not so old as you but I am having a harder
time motivating myself to do things than I used to.
It sounds to me like you need a garage with a hoist so that you can walk

Either that, or you need a pretty young assistant who can fetch wrenches
etc.

G: I fell behind the shop and broke a hip; crawled around and into the front of
the shop, and then passed out or something a few feet from the phone. SIL and
daughter found me 24 hours later. That was five to seven years ago. A couple of
years ago I fell in a restaurant rest room and cracked the pelvis. Had very
good rehab, and now the pelvis is good as new.
Since getting up and down and working under the Mercedes is getting pretty
difficult, I may have to get somebody to replace the rubber bits and center
driveline bearing on the '83 240D, but still hope to do it myself eventually.

Ditto - sort your small screws, nuts, other fasteners, etc. Being white, it
is easy to label them - better than film cans!

I have not thought of anything useful to do with them, but they seem too

collecting old pill containers for re-use, I think it was for doctor's
