you have to remember that Merkel, under the whipped topping, is a
communist.   What the communists have been doing since about 1950, is
destroying the culture and destabilizing countries form within.    Well,
actually that is what they did in Russia in the 1910s.   Destabilize,
get 2 factions fighting each other, then come in to the mess and offer
"Stability"   Same for mao. Pretended to fight the japanese, then with
the japanese gone, and the country in tatters, he rolled over the continent.

Merkel is just trying to ruin the EU so the communists can take it
over.  But she does not see the evil she has unleashed, and that evil
might destroy her plans.

To me, the ugly weld is disappointing. If it seals and hold

But re-engineering? Failure to repair "in kind"? Diminish

Hahaha~!!   You spent how many thousands to buy a house just to keep ya
busy so you leave that crappy bumper alone; besides you parked it at the
budget rent a car lot so you'd never see it.   That's a lot of work and
expense just to win a bet!

You know d@@m well that if you walked buy it every day for 30 days, and
had to look at it, it would be done!

Dan Penoff via Mercedes
January 3, 2020 at 2:39 PM
You would need to leave the Parktronic sensors in the bumper, or you
would have to find covers for the holes.

Good quality rattle cans (2) would cost about $60-$80 depending on who
you get it from. No idea what a shop would charge, but I’ve wondered
if it would be pretty cheap if you walked in with it, said “Paint this
at your leisure” and asked for a deal with no strings (warranty).
Can’t imagine it would be that expensive.

If I ever replace the rear bumper on my ML beater truck I may try
this. I’ve done rattle cans on a W140 front bumper cover and it turned
out well. I’m holding out for the one year anniversary before I do
this so I can beat Curley’s bet that I’ll clean it up before that…

will not name names). To be fair, I like the owner and I feel, based
on my experience with him that he does a great job with the mechanical
repairs. His “welder” is subcontracted. I expressed my dissatisfaction
to him regarding the quality of the welded exhaust repair but he
politely defended the welder and gave no apologies and didn’t ask for
me to show him what I found unsatisfactory. There was another area
that was repaired in a similar manner. The total cost was $425 for the
welding. What do you guys think of this repair? Am I being too fussy here?

All valid arguments. However, there is one factor not considered.
That factor is the imposition of Islam in the region, centuries ago.
Islam is a violent cult devoted to world conquest by any force available.
It is not now, nor has it ever been, a religion.
That factor has nothing to do with oil. Oil is only a resource to fund the
purchase of weapons to further the conquest of the world for Islam.

Ask any Muslim you meet this one question: "What will become of Islam?"
The answer will always be: "Islam will rule the world."

Take it from someone who lived in Mideast and worked for your
government to

unravel the Gordian Knot for two decades.

Yes, I believe the exhaust is stainless and therefore should have been welded
with stainless wire or ideally tig welded. That being said, I have mig welded
stainless exhausts with non stainless wire and the results were beautiful so I
do believe the problem here was due to complete incompetence on the part of
the welder (the person operating the welding machine that is).

I wonder if the exhaust is some grade of stainless? There is some stainless
that has enough ferrous material in it to be somewhat magnetic. That would
explain why the welds look like that. Welder dude used the wrong wire and
shielding gas.

If so, you can find it in bulk online from non-MB suppliers, I believe. What

[MBZ] windows 10 upgrade on PC

2020-01-03 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I did the upgrade on my main PC yesterday and it failed for some reason
and reverted back to win 7.  Problem is the registration key seems to
have vanished.  It now says it is not registered. Anybody heard of
this?  I can't locate my win 7 installation cd with the key on it.  I
guess I may end up having to buy windows 10.

Re: [MBZ] What do you guys think of this weld?

2020-01-03 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
There are various reasons why I don’t want to do that. First of all, it is a
good Mercedes shop for mechanical repairs. I guess anything welding related is
just a no no for them. After this experience, I will weld everything myself. I
let it slide this time because I was busy and didn’t want to hold up my
mother’s car while I found the time to weld it. She was complaining already
about how she needed her car back.
Second of all, the owner is a pretty decent guy so I don’t feel it’s fair to
punish him for one bad experience not directly caused by his shop although he
should have offered to remedy it either way. There is a third of all but I’ll
keep it off the list!

Paint covered up the possibility of seeing uncleaned welding slag. Not
only does the weld look like dog shit but that area was originally joined
together with flanges and bolted together. That’s not how the repair was
done. He slipped a piece over one end and into the other thus reducing the
diameter of the exhaust and creating a local obstruction in the pipe which
will rob some power from the engine. In addition, this dog shit welded mass
cannot be unbolted and separated as was initially intended.

To me, the ugly weld is disappointing. If it seals and hold
together, maybe good enough.

But re-engineering? Failure to repair "in kind"? Diminish
serviceability by replacing a flange with a welded joint?

THAT is unacceptable

If the welder was a drunken monkey working for free peanuts and warm beer,
using a flux core 110 welder, then it's an outstanding job.

Otherwise, as a 'paid expert"... it absolutely sucks !

Good welds are also pretty welds. These welds are bone ugly, show lack of
heat control and hand / stinger coordination, and most likely is a flux
core welder.. low cost cheap welder Really bad.

I would, for the money spent, demand the section be removed and replaced
with new factory bolt or clamp in piece... at the shops cost to rework...

The welds are sub standard and will crack and leak... your mom drives it...
strong argument for safety...

Re: [MBZ] What do you guys think of this weld?

2020-01-03 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Usually in this situation I just replace the rusty section with a factory
part. It bolts right in and the parts are not typically too expensive.

Yelp and Facebook are handy for this sort of social media shaming. However,
there is a flip side in that you can pretty much forget ever patronizing the
business again. Since it’s a place his mom has been taking the car that might

Re: [MBZ] should a bid a Kaleb for it? -- rear bumber

2020-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
You would need to leave the Parktronic sensors in the bumper, or you would have
to find covers for the holes.

Good quality rattle cans (2) would cost about $60-$80 depending on who you get
it from. No idea what a shop would charge, but I’ve wondered if it would be
pretty cheap if you walked in with it, said “Paint this at your leisure” and
asked for a deal with no strings (warranty). Can’t imagine it would be that
expensive.

If I ever replace the rear bumper on my ML beater truck I may try this. I’ve
done rattle cans on a W140 front bumper cover and it turned out well. I’m
holding out for the one year anniversary before I do this so I can beat
Curley’s bet that I’ll clean it up before that…

2020-01-03 Thread Clay via Mercedes
The best foreign policy ever employed by the US has been to stay the heck out
of other peoples business and tidy up our own internal issues. Not that we
have employed that line of action in forever.

Whenever we decide to meddle, the banana republic or other backward terrain
becomes a pustulant sore in our backside. We have no “national interest” in
any of these places and should resolve to show restraint in dealing with other
nations. Just pull it all back to home shores, navigate the world oceans with
our big stick navy, and trim our footprint on foreign soil to the most basic of
services needed to meet the needs of US citizens who visit these third world
cesspools. No propping up dictators, overthrowing duly elected miscreants,
play Spy vs. Spy, supporting rapacious fruit plantations or other business
dealings. Screw NAFTA and the rest of the open world trade policy crap. Make
the things we need here, jack the tariffs on outside goods, and trim the
Department of State, CIA, NSA, and other multi-alphabet agencies to the bone.

In my many decades of living outside the good old USA, the only nation that did
not go sideways were the Swiss. All the rest have transitioned into less
welcoming places for our citizens to live or visit, let alone do business.

Just my $0.02.

You could probably get some paint mixed up and buy a cheap HF HVLP

Re: [MBZ] should a bid a Kaleb for it? -- rear bumber

2020-01-03 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I found a nice rear bumper cover on CL for $60. It was for a ML500, so has the
Parkmatic sensors which I don't need. Perhaps I can get some $ back for them on
eBay. It's white, so needs painted silver to match my ML320.

How much would Maaco charge me to paint a bumper? Or how much will I spend on
quality matching paint in rattle-cans?

Re: [MBZ] Kleb Car if There Ever Was One!

2020-01-03 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
That's a 210 coupe with a ragtop with a C designation that I don't
understand.  i don't understand CLK, it should be ELK.

I find the 210s to be kinda tinny compared to a 123 or 126 but so far
the E300 and the E320 seem fairly decent so this one would probably be
OK too.  They have some electron nannies but mostly seem fairly
straightforward so maintenance is probably OK.  I doubt if this one has
major issues, some nanny probably kakked. Throw the computer on it and
it would likely get sorted right quick.  This one looks fairly nice even
with some warts, for $500 it would probably be a nice little project and
fun to drive just for grins, get your money out of it and probably make
some.

One pic shows no star, others show a cockeyed star.  Those wheels would
probably be worth $500.

4 hours at $100ea, plus $25 to dig in the scrap pile for the patch material?
I can remember when MiG welding cost me $30 an hour, but that was in the 1980s.
The good news is he cut the flange out so the next time it goes you'll have to
replace two pieces instead of the piece the idiot indy (or foolish owner)
should have replaced this time around.

I hadn’t looked at this until I saw Jaime’s comments. Wow.

And for what it’s worth, I never understood the attraction of putting something

Re: [MBZ] What do you guys think of this weld?

2020-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m no welder other than stick welding two edges of steel plate butted together
laying on a flat floor.

That being said, my exhaust guy does a much better job than that and would have
charged significantly less based on my experience. For example, he welded the
small catalytic converter on one side of my SL500 exhaust for $150, and that
involved dropping the pipe from the manifold.

Hmm. No, I don’t think you’re being too fussy. I wonder how much he marked up
the subcontractor’s charge? There wasn’t anything unique as far as the
materials, correct?

Re: [MBZ] What do you guys think of this weld?

2020-01-03 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
Not sure. Looks like mig not sure if with shielding gas or flux core. Paint
covered up the possibility of seeing uncleaned welding slag. Not only does the
weld look like dog shit but that area was originally joined together with
flanges and bolted together. That’s not how the repair was done. He slipped a
piece over one end and into the other thus reducing the diameter of the exhaust
and creating a local obstruction in the pipe which will rob some power from the
engine. In addition, this dog shit welded mass cannot be unbolted and separated
as was initially intended.

Re: [MBZ] should a bid a Kaleb for it?

2020-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Looks like there are a similar number of variants for the rear bumper, mostly
between with/without a ‘removable trailer coupling” and Parktronic.

Stuff like this I always have my dealer guy/gal confirm because of all the
variations, but if it doesn’t have a trailer hitch, I would guess it’s a 163
880 69 71. That’s the basic rear bumper. With the trailer hitch cover it’s a
163 880 70 71.

Pretty much the same part across all W163 models through at least 2003 from
what I can see.

So it looks like there are eight variations of the front bumper face bar, as
the EPC calls it.

Used without headlamp cleaning system
Headlamp wiper/washer
Parktronic
Headlamp wiper/washer, Parktronic

And the same list with the U49 or 220 option codes

The car looks nice -- I have always liked the look of that model, and
apparently Richard Sexton did, too, because he used it as the basis of
his website's logo.

At the end of the posting he wrote:

What does this mean?

What vulnerability does this open up?

I was wondering about that.
Car-part lists the newer ones differently, and they list the V8s separately
from the V6s. Along with the usual variations for parking assist and tow hitch.
I figure the hitch designation means they cut a hole in when they added a
hitch, and no hitch would be intact.

There were very few newer ones within 200 miles of me.
The $150 one was for an old ML320 IIRC.

I don’t know about the front as I didn’t look, but when the listing I linked to
first showed up it defaulted to my 2002 ML500 and said it would fit. I changed
the application to a 2004 and it said that fit, too.

If you want to PM me the VIN I’ll check the number in the EPC and see what
comes up. I was of the understanding that there was a change between 2003/2004
model years on bumpers, but maybe it’s just the front.

There's a good white one in Indiana for $275 or a beat up white one near
Detroit for $150

He’s confused.

Bumper covers for the 2004 and later models are different than earlier models.
You can get rear bumper covers for 2003 and earlier for a couple hundred bucks.
2004 and later are over $300.

1998-2003 rear bumper cover - $200 on eBay

2003-2005 rear bumper cover - $329 on eBay
