Re: [MBZ] Fwd: OT truck battery

2020-04-16 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
A FLAPS load tester does exactly that, by pressing a button it loads the
battery through a loaded heat sink device and measures battery "reserve
under load" on the meter...
I have one from Harbor Fright that works fine.. low cost, but handy to have
handy..

The acid test is to hold the meter probes in the actual battery posts while
someone cranks the starter. If the voltage (at the posts) stays above 10v
there is a problem elsewhere.

Turning on the interior lights and then looking at them before and during
starter engagement can easily and quickly provide helpful information,
too.

A bad starter and a bad battery can act much the same if "turn the
key" is the only test. The volt meter will help sort that out.

Maybe.

Sure is possible.

> Starter might be going bad?

Also possible.

>... I want to check anything else first, and avoid EMdW if
> possible.

A voltmeter may be all that's needed.

#1 Battery (ideal, post to post) voltage at rest.
   (13.6-14.2 is normal)

#2 Battery voltage under load. Starter is good. But also a high
load of somewhat known size. Headlights can work. (if it's
less than 9, either the battery lacks capacity or the current
   draw is really high)

#3 Voltage between engine block and battery "neg".
(more than 1 VDC indicates there is probably a problem - likely
   bad connections)

#4 Voltage between starter motor and battery "pos"
(More than a couple volts suggest a starter that is drawing too
   much)

#5 Optional - voltage between starter terminal and engine block.
(This really ought to be batter voltage under load minus the
drop of the starter wire as measured in test #4)

It is okay to use a long, thin wire to extend a terminal to the
meter for one that is out of reach - like the starter.

What can really help diagnosis is to have all those readings for a
system that works good. But even without that, these should be
able to narrow it down to likely culprits.

That ad hominem attack was a rather cheap shot.

Academic researchers post stuff on the web, too.

Did you look at any of the links I posted? If you had, you could have
seen a link at the bottom of the pages to https://fee.org/about/faculty,
which, among other people, lists a lot of academic researchers (see list
at the bottom of this email, which contains 83 academic researchers).

So how am I to discern what you say or what I linked is (closer to) the
truth?

It seems to me, rather, it is to help those who have been terminated from
their jobs to stay partially afloat until they find their next employment.

It is, indeed, not to allow lazy people to not work; there are
requirements to receive unemployment compensation, among which is looking
for a new job and making a record of job contacts which can be followed
up by the state agency administering unemployment compensation.

It is a cost on business, both through payment of unemployment insurance
premiums and higher taxes, which provides for former workers.

Other than providing a pool of possible new hires in slightly better
condition than without it and maybe giving an employer a slight ease of
conscience when he discharges an employee, I cannot see any real benefits
or advantages for business.

Good ideas. Do you have a digital multimeter to measure the voltage at
the battery's terminals?

How often do you run the truck's engine? Recall lead-acid batteries will
self discharge over the period of about a month or so.

2020-04-16 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Remove the cables from the battery and clean them and the battery post..
re-install them using some "battery cable grease".
Clean, Bright, and Tight... you are missing one of those three... IF the
battery is holding good charge... have you load tested the battery? Most
FLAPS will do it for you, for free.
Start cheap, clean the cables and check for good ground connection and hot
lead connection on the car... then test load test the battery.

I have a label maker that neatly solves those kinds of problems... it
prints on a plastic like material that applies with an adhesive backing
[peel off , stick on]... Made by DYMO.
I use it to make labels to stick to oil filters , ie. date, mileage, engine
hours, etc. and to label and document engine work, oil change info, etc..
IF I recall.. less than $30 6 yrs ago. It has more than paid for it's self.

Even "rarely open" probably equates to way more airflow than an average house

door...

2020-04-16 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
AFAIK these days most "synthetic oil" is just highly refined conventional oil
so it shouldn't matter.I remember somebody (Marshall?) suggesting that while a
quart of conventional oil in the fuel tank was a good thing, that synthetic
didn't burn well and was a bad idea. Of course I've heard a bunch of foolish
ideas about synthetic over the years, including the one that says you "Can't
use it in air cooled engines" which is just crap. I've used synthetic almost
exclusively in all my lawnmowers and snowblowers for nearly 20 years now. The
one time we had a failure it was when dad took a lawnmower out to mow on last
year's oil. He was only "going to take it out for a minute to warm it up." 30
minutes later he came walking back, the rod was hanging out through the side of
the block...
Now I change the oil in the fall.

Re: [MBZ] Was the world really a better place 30 years ago?

2020-04-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I totally agree, however, there are some things you simply can’t escape whether
the TV is current or a year old.

Connectivity - Don’t. It adds little in the way of functionality, compromises
your privacy, and the manufacturer’s applications that are on the TV are
generally crap. An Amazon Firestick as Karl mentioned previously is a far
better option for getting content along with a cable box if you’re going that
direction.

Picture quality - while the UHD TVs have excellent picture quality, the OLED
TVs have breathtaking picture quality. There’s truly a difference between the
two. This may or may not matter to you, but definitely compare them. While it
wouldn’t and didn’t matter to me (I didn’t let anyone watch the demo TV in the
store, I picked it out and brought it home) I can see where it might to some
viewers. There really is a striking difference in picture quality between the
two technologies. However, if it’s double the cost it might not make fiscal
sense to some as it didn’t to me.

Re: [MBZ] Question for Clay

2020-04-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
These things suck it down, believe me. I think we had a 200,000 BTU model and
would go through 500+ gallons of oil in a season, possibly more (this is in
central Indiana). Understand that we were generating waste oil on an almost
daily basis, probably collecting as much as 1,000 gallons or more in a year’s
time. Used to be the SafetyKleen guys bought waste oil, and would pay a small
amount for it. We would use that that to buy beer money for the shop. Then the
“cradle to grave” stuff for oils and industrial chemicals kicked in and they
stopped paying, and later even started charging to remove it. We had been
burning waste oil prior to this, but on a much smaller scale with a smaller
furnace used to heat the office in the shop. This was the tipping point where
we decided to move up to a furnace large enough to heat the whole shop building
and keep all of our waste oil. It worked quite well.

As with most consumer tech items, the best values are usually found with
the stuff that's one or two years behind the leading edge.

That's how I buy phones, computers, etc. I haven't bought a TV in years
and if it weren't for the rest of the family I probably would not own
one, but the same principle applies.

[MBZ] OT - Now TV - Was Was the world really a better place 30 years ago?

2020-04-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Depends.

I think the big difference is whether you go with standard UHD TV or the OLED
TVs.

I bought a new TV late last year, and the price point between the two was the
determining factor for where I spent my money. An OLED TV will probably start
around $1200-$1500 depending on size and features, where a nice UHD TV can be
had in the range of $600-$800, again, dependent on size, brand and feature set.

I think I spent around $800 for a 65” Samsung at Costco.

If I had a waste oil heater, I would likely have done so since most of
the used oil I would have is synthetic. I don't generate enough used oil
to heat much and I suspect my insurance company would not be amused but

They are in the ends of the rear bumper cover on our Subaru. Since it uses
microwaves (RF) and the covers are plastic, they are hidden inside - you
can't see them from the outside.

When I was working the Mannheim (PA) auction for a buddy who is a high line
dealer I was actively searching for a nice 300E. At the time the combination of
a maroon interior and silver exterior was not attractive to the luxury car
buying public and these were cars the dealers would avoid at auction or pay a
much lower price for.

I would think a lot of people would use waste oil for heating. In the generator

often enough to get us through the winter for a fuel source. I think the shop
was 60' x 100’ with a 30’ ceiling and was pretty much an open space.

I took an old folks class last fall, and we did tours of waste
processing/recycling facilities. For something like vehicle fluids, the stuff
would need to be gathered, then would end up in 55 gallon barrels and shipped
back down to Tacoma, WA. Too expensive to send glass down south, so it either
just goes in the trash and landfill, or the really eco friendly will self sort
and take it to a processing center where the glass ends up hauled to a place
that will crush it and use it for bedding sewer pipes. Fluids would be worse.

It would not surprise me if some of the repair/service places will have it used
in waste oil burners for shop heating. I expect it is more likely to just get
put in empty jugs and tossed in the garbage. From the large oil spots leaving
a trail behind last weeks garbage truck, somebody got rid of a few gallons that
way.

There is a landfill that is supposed to have only garbage left, and a person
would be able to segregate his toxic waste from normal waste. There is a
garbage Co-gen facility that provides around 35% of the power for JBER. Pretty
sure oil ends up there as fuel.

All the machinery/snow machines/dead cars/scrap in Alaska usually ends up just
where it died. Fluids and all. Too expensive to actually deal with it. Maybe
at some far future it will be reprocessed tectonically and mined by aliens.

white/palomino. And when the car was new even more so.

often enough to get us through the winter for a fuel source. I think the shop

[MBZ] 1973 Mercedes-Benz 220/8 NA,$1,500

2020-04-16 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Probably gone by now but this would be an interesting deal

1973 Mercedes-Benz 220/8 NA
$1,500
Vehicles
Listed 16 weeks ago in Johnson City, TN

 About This Vehicle…

Driven 60,000 miles
Automatic transmission
Exterior color: Grey · Interior color: Tan
Fuel type: Gasoline
Fair condition

 Seller's description…

1973 Mercedes Benz 220/8 W115 Old Timer Gasoline 2.2L Bulletproof 4
cylinder This would make an excellent father & son project for an
economical first classic car!!! I restore classic Mercedes & got this
car because it was headed to the crusher & I wanted more experience
solving W114 W115 W108 W109 specific problems. It’s had a HUGE amount of
troubleshooting & labor put into it. I got exactly what I wanted out of
it, knowledge I can apply to repairing other classic Mercedes. My plan
was to fix it up nice for a profitable resale but sometimes life throws
you a curve ball. I’m getting divorced & selling everything off as-is.
This car is priced to the dollar what I have in it so I can just break
even & move on. I know what it’s worth. The price is firm! First to
bring cash with exact change! Don’t want to swap unless you’ve got an RV
to trade for this & a Corvette. THE GOOD Very solid body & frame that’s
not rusted out, getting harder to find these with good bones. Wheels
restored & painted New tires with period look white wall flappers 0
miles Complete brake system rebuilt Radiator repaired & coolant system
reconditioned (cant get these anymore) Gas tank reconditioned with
electrolysis, clean like new inside. (can’t get these either) Electrical
system troubleshooting & repair. Starter restored Transmission engages
in forward & reverse, as it should. Interior has seat covers making it
clean & presentable but nothing fancy. Starts easy, idols smooth,
doesn't smoke. Fresh synthetic oil & filter. These engines are called
Bulletproof for a reason. You change the oil & they will last forever! A
LOT of work has gone into this car to solve major problems that would
total other cars like it 10 times over & you don’t have to deal with
them because the hard stuff is already done. I have videos of it running
& lots of pictures of what’s been done. No mystery of what your getting.
THE BAD The (more desirable) 32/36 carburetor has been rebuilt but it
has a stuck internal ball valve. It needs to go to a shop for a hot tank
cleaning to get it unstuck. Carb cleaner just wont do it. This is the 1
thing keeping it from being a driver. Idols smooth but bogs under a
load. It will rev up nice if you put your thumb on the butterfly but you
cannot drive it home as-is. It’s VERY close to being a driver. The front
windshield is cracked on the passenger side. The front & rear windshield
needs a new seal, $100 2 piece seal kit. (All of them need new
windshield seals at this age.) A windshield is $400 a whole parts car is
$300. A set of 4 new locking handled suction cups is included to make
this DIY install easier. There is no key. When I got it, the ignition
switch had been cut out (key cylinder failure is common) & it was a rats
nest of wires. This has been sorted out at great troubleshooting labor.
It currently has a fully functional & 100% fully reversible racing push
button start system installed. It needs a cylinder specifically with the
harness plug included. Will be easy to install, black wire to black wire
ect. Complicated part is done. Must get the gas version the diesel
version is different & won’t work. You can get a 6 piece lock & key set
for $400, again a whole parts car is $300. The 2 rear quarter panels
have had bodywork done at some point in the past & are primer gray. A
little touch up attention & they would be ready to paint. There is no
title. This is NOT a big deal with a car 47 years old! There are many
ways to get around this & you do what you want but the way I was going
to do it was to get Vermont plates by mail as this seemed to be the
cheapest & easiest way to go about it. VTs no title state attitude on
older cars is pretty much “Yes, we’ll take your money. Fill this out.
Here you go.” it’s straightforward & easy. Feel free to Google more info
on that. I’ve already done preliminary research on the cars history &
it’s 100% not stolen, it just hasn’t been registered for a long time. No
red flags or I wouldn’t have put so much time & money in it. None of
these issues are insurmountable. None of them are going to cost a
fortune to fix, especially if you can work on it a little yourself. It’s
very close to being a driver, just as it is. Car is located in Johnson
City TN close to the JC / Elizabethton exit & close to ETSU. Happy to
help you load it or work with your tow truck operator, they know me,
they bring
