Re: [MBZ] New Addition to Dan's Acres

2020-04-24 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
That is a good deal. Congrats.

The front bumper cover is about 700 from mercedes. I have one of the cheap
ones from Latvia sitting around if I would sell cheap.

Dont back into anything. The rear impact strip is nla and no aftermarket
parts here that I could find.

Factory CD changer is mint! I may need to find one. I wonder if it only
works with a Becker head unit.

They all need the fcp euro rear suspension overhaul.

Did they do the harnesses, or are you going to make one?

16" SL wheels are a nice upgrade.

160mph on 275hp?

Does it have ASR?

How is the headliner?

Amazon clear film on the headlights looks super.

Slightly better. 4.2 liters of displacement versus 4.0. Facelift model, (94-95)
so the last and best of the design and enhancements to the W124 chassis.

Just loaded on the truck about 30 minutes ago. Should be here on Sunday or
Monday.

2020-04-24 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I had the hood up on the Sprinter today. It also has plastic covers of various
sizes and shapes, under which I’m sure lies a 3.0l V6 Diesel engine. Everyone
who has driven her says that she is very easy to drive and does very well on
the road. My niece said that the cabin is designed much more ergonomically
correct with simpler controls than the 2017 Honda Oddity van that was destined
for the used car market before COVID-19 hit. The Sprinter is MUCH more van for
the $10K price difference, way more room with similar fuel economy! It’s
averaging 18MPG just like the Honda, and it should get better as it breaks in.
It has no problem getting as high as 22.6MPG on mostly highway drives, probably
capable of mid 20’s on a long hwy trip.

Doubtful they'll last that long.

Too much plastic, too much is unrepairable, or cost of repairs quickly
exceeds value of vehicle.

Ok it was more then the Eufy. $449 on Scamazon with the vacuum base. It
could be worth it, as it finds it's way back and empties itself. The base
is also a vac so you really get two vacs.

Anyway a bit more spendy to get bells and whistles but it requires a lot
less intervention. It is an Amazon pick with four stars and 2500 reviews,
FWIW.

2020-04-24 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Actually now that I think of it I've bought bullets from a couple suppliers.
You can't ship loaded ammunition into MA but there is no restriction on
components. Besides which I have the proper permit to own a gun and to buy
powder. I can drive to Cabelas and buy components. I think I need my permit to
buy powder but not primers or bullets or wads or shot.
I think some companies just avoid MA, NY, IL and CA because they don't want to
keep up with the laws and don't want to accidentally run afoul if there are
changes.

Actually weirder than that. A few weeks ago I ordered some shotgun wads from
Ballistic Products. I got a confirmation of the order but no confirmation of
shipping and then the order looked really weird, zero dollars billed. Anyway I
waited a couple days and sent them an email. They replied "Unfortunately, our
system automatically removes reloading components from orders with a
Massachusetts shipping address as we are currently only able to ship to 01 or
07 FFL holders in Massachusetts or out of state addresses."
Which is bollocks, theres no reason they can't ship wads here. I've got another
supplier that has sent me all manner of bullets no problem at all. For
reference shotgun wads are little plastic cylinders that hold the bird shot
away from the powder. I specifically wanted some to try in my muzzleloading
shotgun and Ballistic carries a type its hard to get elsewhere.
Anyway today their catalog arrived, 75 pages of things I can't buy. I've never

Actually I might have the bullets sold. The lead in these isn't super useful
to me for bullets as its usually pretty hard, muzzleloading wants pure lead.
Could make weights for the loader tractor though. I was going to fill a 5
gallon bucket with concrete but a much smaller can of lead would be a lot
heavier and take up less space.

Seller bought it in 2015, took it to Columbus, OH
Kept in a heated garage, washed whenever there was snow or ice on the roads

 Has intermittent ASR/ABS fault
Needs driver’s seat bottom cover (tears)
Owner says the paint on the roof is checkered, but I got some close up
photos from him and if it is, I can barely see it. Might be a Martha thing.
Two sets of wheels (snows and summer)

 $1500 sale price

This deal came together so quickly it was scary. We were frantically

Cool. Then my 400E was a sleeper. I never paid attention to the engine numbers.
They’re probably both 112.974.

Bought a 1995 E420 from a guy in Columbus, OH today. Shipper is picking
it up this afternoon/evening, should be here by Sunday or Monday.

 Here are the details:

 113k on the clock

Delivery (1995) to 2015 lived in South Florida
Seller bought it in 2015, took it to Columbus, OH
Kept in a heated garage, washed whenever there was snow or ice on the roads
Everything works, all original such as Becker radio, etc.
Has issue with brake booster according to owner, sounds more like a vacuum
 issue
 Has intermittent ASR/ABS fault
Needs driver’s seat bottom cover (tears)
Owner says the paint on the roof is checkered, but I got some close up
photos from him and if it is, I can barely see it. Might be a Martha thing.
Two sets of wheels (snows and summer)

 $1500 sale price

This deal came together so quickly it was scary. We were frantically
trying to find a way to transfer money around this afternoon after finding
out the shipper was on their way already. I wasn’t sure I was going to be
able to get a Hagerty policy issued before it got on the road, but that’s
 done, too.

More upon arrival. I’ll get it on the SDS and see what’s up with the
ASR/ABS. I’m convinced the brake booster issue he’s described is a cracked
 vacuum line.

In comparison, the 275k 1993 400E I had would do 130 mph before I chickened
out, with some pedal still left. This one will probably go just as fast, or up

so the last and best of the design and enhancements to the W124 chassis.

[MBZ] New Addition to Dan's Acres

2020-04-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Bought a 1995 E420 from a guy in Columbus, OH today. Shipper is picking it up
this afternoon/evening, should be here by Sunday or Monday.

Has issue with brake booster according to owner, sounds more like a vacuum issue
Has intermittent ASR/ABS fault
Needs driver’s seat bottom cover (tears)
Owner says the paint on the roof is checkered, but I got some close up photos
from him and if it is, I can barely see it. Might be a Martha thing.
Two sets of wheels (snows and summer)

$1500 sale price

This deal came together so quickly it was scary. We were frantically trying to
find a way to transfer money around this afternoon after finding out the
shipper was on their way already. I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to get a
Hagerty policy issued before it got on the road, but that’s done, too.

More upon arrival. I’ll get it on the SDS and see what’s up with the ASR/ABS.
I’m convinced the brake booster issue he’s described is a cracked vacuum line.

2020-04-24 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
You need more weight then, a mower or blade isn't all that heavy all things
considered, couple hundred pounds maybe. If you're trying to counteract 3000#
on the front you need at least 1500# on the back. Loaders have been around for
60+ years, 4wd in tractors wasn't common until fairly recently...

Not exactly, I'd say "Tractors with loaders BENEFIT from 4wd". What the really
need is a BHT, "big heavy thing".

Once I get my garden tractor loader (furlough project) done its going to get
about 100# of lead hung off the back to go with the 50# of wheel weights
already on it. Might consider fluid filling the tires, haven't decided yet.

Allan,

I'm not sure he sees a lot of W116 stuff, but it can’t hurt to ask. If he’s got
the right color leather he can repair seat covers, too, so that’s an option as
well.

His name is Craig and you can email him at: mscho...@sbcglobal.net

Tell him I sent you - I get nothing out of it other than the satisfaction of
getting him more business. He’s done a great job for me over the years and I
would love to see him be able to help more owners.

Re: [MBZ] I'm thinking about Poos

2020-04-24 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Calls for good piloting skills too. Not speaking from experience but
it's my understanding that the ability to hold a motionless hover like
that takes some time to learn. Maybe there's some autopilot assistance?

The linemen who do this make a lot of money. I would imagine this sort
of thing will be replaced by drones/robots as soon as it's feasible.

Re: [MBZ] FW: 1986 Mercedes 500 SEL project

2020-04-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This is one I see with some regularity over the years but don’t understand. I
know the 500SEL, especially the gray market versions, are supposed to be very
high performance vehicles for their time. However, most of the ones I’ve seen
are in disrepair and just seem bodged up. The ask is often far beyond what a
comparable W126 chassis car would be from the same time frame.

They don’t seem to get a lot of love.

That would be a fun ride.

Bad: previous owner cut a hole in the hood for a diesel stack (kinda

a little oil which is common for these old diesels. Odometer stopped
working so true mileage is unknown.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Robot Vacuums

2020-04-24 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
We have a dumb one and a smarter one. The dumb one is a Eufy. It rumbles
around randomly. Never finds it's way back to the charger. Very durable
however. Amazing it still functions. Runs daily.

The other one was a gift. It is a Shark. They seem to have favorable
ratings. It has a stand with another vacuum in it to empty it's own dust
bin into a larger stationary bin. It learns the floor layout of the house
over time and optimizes the cleaning pattern. It runs systematically, like
you would till a field with a tractor and implement, or mow the lawn.
Because it sort of knows where it is, it generally finds it's way back to
the stand to recharge. It sends me a text if it gets hung up somewhere, or
if the battery runs low. It occasionally speaks, which can be startling if
you didnt know it was under the couch beneath you.

Overall the shark does a better job and I'm not sure it was that much more
expensive than the eufy. It is several years newer however. I think these
devices are improving rapidly at the same price point. Hoping it has a mute
button, which it probably does in the phone app somewhere.

0 buckshot for reloading 10ga or 3.5" 12ga?
Put it up on eBay as slingshot ammo?
Put it on Gunbroker as muzzle loader round ball?

[MBZ] OT - Robot Vacuums

2020-04-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I had asked for opinions and recommendations on robot vacuums a while back and
come to the conclusion that this was not something I felt was justified.

I reversed my position recently and bought one of these:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B079QYYGF1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My observations and opinion after a couple of weeks:

All in all it works well. Occasionally gets tangled up in things, but for the
most part is pretty well autonomous. It definitely doesn’t replace sweeping,
but goes a long way in keeping the “tumbleweeds” and such gone that occur
between sweepings. With hardwood floors and a cat, even though she doesn’t shed
a great deal, there’s a noticeable improvement in cleanliness from fur and dust
bunnies.

This particular model isn’t that “smart”, but it seems to do a pretty thorough
job for the most part. It’s amazing to see it get under the table and into a
forest of chair legs and find it’s way out.

So call me a convert. This doesn’t replace sweeping, but augments it to the
point of cutting down the frequency somewhat.

We’re getting this right now. Love the lightning. Like being back in the
Midwest. Nothing like a good summer thunderstorm with lots of lightning.

Re: [MBZ] June 1

2020-04-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m just yanking your chain, buddy.

But really, I needed a kick in the pants, virtually or otherwise, to get some
of this stuff done. More time working at home just made it harder, as it’s easy
to get fired up about doing something when you’re stuck behind a desk at work.
That physical separation has a big effect on my willingness to get things done.

The tie rod and steering boot was a lot easier than I had expected, which is
good. That sort of gave me the inertia to keep moving on this stuff and get it
knocked out. The weather is pretty rowdy here so I’m not sure how much I’ll get
done today, but progress is progress.

Hope those brown shirts aren’t running you into the ground. My driver said it’s
so busy it’s almost like the holidays.
