It is very easy to copy, move to new hardware, keep special software running on old operating systems, etc. Especially since from what I remember STAR is picky. If it's happy in a VM - leave it there! > I can’t get the VM to recognize the USB connected drive as a > hard drive. Virtualbox or VMWare? I haven't used VMWare in more than a decade. Virtualbox can mount external harddrives via USB. But the recent open source versions of virtualbox need "extensions" to allow USB. Those are separate pieces due to licensing. I only run Virtualbox host on Linux, so I can't comment on what is included on a Mac on MSWin install. Might that be your problem? I still recommend keeping it as a virtual machine and not turning it into hardware. But maybe I'm not understanding what you are really trying to do. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] Amazon Delivery Clown Trying to Buy My W124
AN Amazon delivery dude, driving a brand new 2500 GMC DuraMax, lifted, gaudy looking, rang my doorbell and asked me if my 300D was for sale. I told him everything is always for sale, typically. He said his little brother (his delivery cohort) just moved into town and he needed a car so he and his wife and new baby could get around. I told him $2K and the AC needs a fresh charge of R12 (I haven’t done it this year because I’m not driving it hardly at all). So immediately they were asking “what’s your bottom line….new wife and baby…..Jesus will bless you….will you take $500”. When I quickly said no, the brother said, “let’s gamble for it. I win, you sell it to him for $500. You win, we give you $2k.” I laughed and said something akin to get lost, asshat. Bob R. Re: [MBZ] OT lightning hit
Probably your modem negotiates with whatever the next thing is upstream and that box kept your configuration. If its their box they've probably got some little note in the ToS that allows for it. We've got a storage system that has a little Linux computer (or 2 for redundancy) onboard. If the computer fails you get a replacement, hot swap it into the box, it picks up your software version and configuration from a saved copy and configures itself. It sits and churns for about 15 minutes and then is ready to use again. Compared to the old days when new hardware meant between 9 and 25 minutes of staring, hoping, praying the system would accept a manual update this is indeed magik and well appreciated. -Curt On Thursday, August 20, 2020, 4:25:26 PM EDT, Floyd Thursby via Mercedes wrote: It's a Uverse modem, I plugged it into the line, it churned and blinked for a few minutes then all was well. So the new modem came today, plugged it in, it sorted itself out in a few minutes and I was back online. The instructions said to put the new one next to the old one and it would transfer settings over. Well, I couldn't do that since the old one was fried. So I was going to try to configure it to what my old modem's settings were, names and passwords and such, but lo somehow or other it booted up with exactly the same settings as the old one had. How did that happen? Was AT&T storing the settings in their cloud and the new one automatically downloaded it all and reset itself? THAT is weird and somewhat unsettling. --FT On 8/20/20 2:24 PM, Jim Cathey via Mercedes wrote: I flipped breakers after unplugging delicate electronics from the wall in preparation The (unplugged) power cord _alone_ is enough of an antenna to destroy sensitive electronics if the lightning strike is close enough. Not sure what you’re describing (I know what you’re talking about as far as partitions.) The existing hard drive isn’t large enough for the STAR VM. Native hard drive in the laptop is 100GB. The VM is 95GB. Wouldn’t be enough room for the OS. This is why I want to clone/copy the VM to a hard drive. Once done, I can put it in the laptop and run directly off what used to be the VM. -D > On Aug 20, 2020, at 1:18 PM, Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes > wrote: > > Perhaps I'm ignorant enough to come up with a solution: > > Why couldn't you create a new partition, clone the HD to the new partition, > et voila! > > Greg > > -Original Message- > From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Dan Penoff > via Mercedes > Sent: Thursday, August 20, 2020 9:42 AM > To: Mercedes List > Cc: Dan Penoff > Subject: [MBZ] OT - VirtualBox & Copying a VM to a Physical Machine > > My STAR system is on a VM that runs off an external drive. Perhaps I'm ignorant enough to come up with a solution: Why couldn't you create a new partition, clone the HD to the new partition, et voila! Here in my part of the PNW we don't get a lot of lightning. But back when I lived on the east coast I had a strike takeout the serial port of my Kaypro II through the phone line. The socketed chip was easy enough to replace. I was thinking the same thing. Got a big ZAP right there, thought I had been hit by lightning, heard the boom a half second later back behind the house so the strike was very close by. Not sure what it hit, tree in the woods or something I guess. Fried my uverse modem which is about 6ft from where I was sitting so I’m thinking it came through the (buried) phone line. Again. This is like the fifth time this has happened, I guess the lightning induces a high voltage spike in the line. I try to tell the ATT people I need an arrestor or surge suppressor or something on the network interface but it doesn’t sink in. So they send me a new modem every couple of years. --FT Sent from iPhone ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
