Re: [MBZ] Sticky broken plastic trim pieces

2020-09-12 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I watched a coupla utubers who used goo gone to loosen the sticky stuff and
kinda roll it off. The turps seemed to actually dissolve most of it and it
mostly rubbed off. There was also a suggestion of acetone which I was out of
so grabbed the turps. And it smells better than thinner or acetone.

Some utuber asserted that the sticky stuff was like some kind of varnish
coating on the plastic. This stuff seems to be pure black plastic with that
coating.

I think tomorrow I’ll try to remove the trim pieces and get them cleaned up,
then try the epoxy with some screen material. Maybe tack them first with
cyanoacrylate.

It’s kinda odd these are the only pieces that are sticky.

GWN neighborhood is proximate to ANC, so lots of noise. Homes go for the
triple panes when the glazing fails. Probably comparable to hurricane glass
pricing. Not enough window factories here, and the big brands have to come by
barge. Custom glass takes a few months to arrive, so they sell it to you this
summer for install the next.

My desire is to do a custom build with all the next gen goodies in a structure
able to operate in analog mode for when the veneer of civilization is gone.
The best of the 21st century to operate in 19th century splendor.

Now if I could find a goodly plot of land for a reasonable price….

NOT in GWN, but maybe proximate to hurricane country, but not in it.

I did a complete replace on the SEA casita over the past 20 years. One door
has fogged. The GWN house has annual temperature fluctuations of 70-80*C. A
majority of the glazing has failed, fogging and interior frost formation in
winter. Laminate would reduce ambient noise from airport operations and remove
the cataracts on the view. Original 35 year old windows. I expect no thermal
upgrade, as the shack has 2x4 framing and low R pink insulation.

Here in FL hurricane rated windows are the big thing for replacement. They’re
very expensive, so builders won't use them, you’ll have to retrofit at your
expense.

I don’t think they’re multipane, but they could be. A neighbor just had his
house done, and it was close to $30k.

When we built our first house down here we asked for double pane windows, not
just for the energy savings but for noise, too. Builder wouldn’t do it, even if

New South are the big window guys down here, although there are plenty others,

[MBZ] Convergence

2020-09-12 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Winter is setting in in GWN. Had the first semi killing frost this morning and
the lettuce gave up the ghost. Flowers are just peeved, as it is a sunny day.

I have no intention to remain in this land of limited warmth and light (climate
change is a hoax and will not get here soon enough). The past month or two I
have been doing some research into home building for retirement. Lots of FEMA
literature, house plans, regulations, geo-tech and building systems. Today was
glazing deep dive.

Hurricane glass and laminated glazing. I wanted to find mean time before
failure, as double paned normal glass seems to fog and fail very swiftly to my
mind. Rabbit hole of usages, history, applications and not much on how long
this stuff remains within design parameters. I did find lots of glass to deal
with current social and environmental issues. Bullet and impact resistant
glazing. Fire resistance and noise attenuation. The part is do want to look at
further is using laminated instead of tempered for side lites in automotive
uses. That should allow a driver to exit situations of peaceful protest
without shattered windows. No idea if wildfires would be kept out long enough
for the car to get very far.

Re: [MBZ] Sticky broken plastic trim pieces

2020-09-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It was a design of the plastic’s deterioration, planned or not.

My ML500 was like this, too. All of the plastic surfaces were sticky, no matter
how often you cleaned them.

As I search for a nice SLK 320 for the wife I’ve found that there was another
major plastic “fail” at the time, too. The plastics on the SLK230 and SLK320
were not molded in the color of the interior, that is, there was a finish
applied to a plastic part. The finishes wear off or break down over the years,
and depending on the original color can look just horrible. And it’s not just
the console, it’s the bolsters and glove compartment door, too.

My upholstery guy say they refused to work on them because nothing they tried
was permanent or would wear. He said the last job he did on one about five
years ago was complete new replacement parts from MB, and he said it was really
pricey.

I have to defer to “Mr. Adhesives” here. As Don suggested, plastic epoxy with
some reinforcement is probably the best approach.

I’ve never used “Goo Gone” but I’ve heard many sing it’s praises. What you’re
experiencing is the plastic breaking down as it does in all early 2000s

those is that the legends are painted on them, so if you go at them really hard
you end up with white buttons and no legends/icons.

I did this once, it took days. I had to move the hose a few times, as
they would crawl from the windy exit and take off a few inches away.
I didn't want to kill my good shop-vac, so I bought one for $20 at the
liquidation outlet. (Costco returns, etc.) It did the job, and is still
running. It's small and handy, and also has a stainless-steel tank
like the bigger one I was protecting.

They don't live that long, in a dry tank out in the hot sun. Also helps if
you shoot a little insecticide down the hose.

I had very good luck once with a hornet nest that had set up inside my

I found that an acetylene torch with a white flame was the only thing
those little bastards could see. They all flew at it on the attack, whipped
through the flame, and hit the ground wingless. Stomp city after that,
and I used the flame to cook out the nest.

I recall my uncle getting rid of a paper wasp nest (the kind that looks
like a big grey football) by using a shop vac. He set up the hose so it
was near the nest entrance. Every wasp that arrived or departed got
sucked into the shop vac. Not sure how long he had to let it run to get
them all. My shop vac is old and sort of marginal so I'm not sure the
motor would handle running for hours nonstop. And then you have to do
something with the canister full of live wasps.

Having some personal experience with trying to kill both fire ants and
killer bees in underground hives, the use of insecticide does not penetrate
deeply enough into the hive to get a kill... the hive may get "sick for a

The diatomaceous earth works because it gets carried deep into the hive by
every member coming through the entrance... or leaving...
I've found killer bees [very active in AZ on the desert] are particularly

placing one end at their entry point, after laying a trail of diatomaceous
earth [nice and thick] to put the pipe 1/2 over... then throwing dirt over
the entry point end at the building which forced arriving and departing
bees to use the "poison entry tunnel" instead of just fly in, land, and
enter the hive..
I did this at night, and still got stung, even with protective clothing...
End result... after about a week... the hive went inactive... I refreshed
the "killer earth" and left it there, in case there were any
survivors..finally able to close up the foundation and use the building
again.
As always when dealing with poison critters... use caution... your results
may vary.

Later models had the 2.3l four banger, which was a really awful engine for a
lot of reasons, mainly because they choked it with pollution control
modifications. Remember, this was in the early part of the addition of
pollution controls. 1974 was probably the peak of kludges, add-ons, timing
tweaks, etc., until they could actually design and test systems for production
vehicles.

The Pintos were varied based on what mill they had. The early models, like
mine, had a 2000cc OHC 4 cylinder that was also used in the Capris, and was
very popular in that community. It was a wicked little engine that was
constrained by the Holley 5200 Ford put on it. For whatever reason, no doubt
pollution controls, which were very crude at that time, the linkage on the carb
was set up so the second barrel would never open beyond about 25% or so. As
soon as I figured this out I remedied the situation so I got both barrels, full
operation. That made it a totally different car.

The story about dropping the head bolt driver came from when I had pulled the
head and ported and polished the intake and head. I read a couple of books on
how to do it, got the necessary die grinder bits and went at it after hours in
the shop where I worked. This resulted in some additional performance, although
I don't recall it being a great deal.

By today’s standards it would have been pretty inadequate, but at the time it
was a good car. The fuel tank thing was just a design flaw that should have
never happened. The remedy was nothing more than a plastic shield placed
between the tank and the undercarriage of the car.

A former coworker told me a tale of his friend who had a Pinto that was
absolute garbage, could barely get out of its own way. So he decides to take it
to the junkyard and just for a laugh drives it the 5 or 6 miles there in second
gear with the engine just wailing and trailing a billowing cloud of smoke.
Apparently when he's nearly there he relents and shifts up and is amazed to
find the engine very peppy.I don't remember if the story included the tale of
the little old lady that owned it first and got it all carboned up but the
punchline was that the drive had burned all the carbon out of the engine and
the guy ended up keeping it several more years.
My parents owned both a Pinto and a Vega at the same time. Some guy hit the
rock wall by my parent's house and sent a rock into the door of the Pinto which
"totaled it". I put that in quotes because the car was so terrible I'd have
called it totaled long before. "Check the gas and fill the oil" comes to mind.
Anyway with the insurance money my parents bought a Mercury Lynx wagon which
was a rebadged Escort. This was about the time I started to realize (at 8 years
old no less) that my father had no taste in cars. His '91 Ford Tempo with a
3spd automatic was the closer.
Other than his current Jeep Renegade my dad knows how to pick loser cars like
nobody else...

though.  He thrashed that thing unmercifully and I think the engine blew

My boss when I worked at the airport summers in college had a yellow
Pinto wagon or hatchback or whatever it was, black interior, 4spd.  He
let me drive it once to go on some errand or delivery or something.  It
was quite peppy and handled well, you could see out of the big windows
well too.  I kinda liked it, it was "sportier" than the big merkin iron
I was used to driving.

Another summer I was working for another place, a guy drives up on the
ramp (back when you could do that sort of thing) early one Sunday
morning in his MGB GT, BRG/black, and asks me to get his airplane out of
the hangar.  OK fine.  So I get the plane out after some jockeying other
planes around, he hands me the keys to the car and says, "Go drive it
around if you want."  Oh yeah.  So I spent the next hour or so racing
around the ramp and the old taxiway that went by our hangar.  Now THAT
was sporty!  He comes back after awhile, I fueled the plane and put it
away, give him the keys back.  H asked me how I enjoyed the car and we
chatted a bit about it, really nice guy.  I think he really got a charge
out of letting me drive his car.  I can't remember who he was, a rich
guy with toys I guess, just liked to have fun with them.
