2020-10-02 Thread Clay via Mercedes
I think my 6year old Yota has this “feature” embedded. To use the infotainment
system a person needs to register a telephonic device to the system to enable
the thing. That means giving your identifying data to Yota of course for the
app to link you up. Otherwise you have limited mapping and access to OTA radio
and not the full spectrum of geegaws and distractions on the screen. At least
the thing does not drive itself.

I don't think so but not 100% ruled out. PS fluid level is good, that
much I know, and the whine doesn't change at all with steering
movements.

Yeah some. The common problems seem to be a solenoid (which I've
replaced) and belief in the magic Honda fluid (which is in
use). Honestly I think at 213K miles it may just be at EOL given
whatever likely minimal care it had before my ownership. But changing an
external filter is cheap enough to be worth trying.

consumer. I wouldn't mind a Cruze, 50+ mpg sounds appealing. I'm
concerned about the GDI though.

The 2014-2015 2.0L diesels had issues with emissions controls,
particularly NOx sensors and DEF tank heaters ($$$).
The 2017-2018 1.6L diesels seem pretty solid. Stick shifts had dual mass
flywheel issues, but apparently the replacement parts are more durable.

Anything over 60mph you aren't getting 50mpg steady state cruising or
over 44mpg tank average in a GDI auto trans unless you spend your time
on the freeway 50 yards behind a semi. But it's cool to go down a flat
road at 55mph with the dash reading 52mpg, even if stop signs kill the
average.

As for LSPI in the GDI engine, for 2018 (and in replacement engines and
warranty piston replacements) they use pistons with strengthened ring
lands. Usually the sides of the pistons break below the ring grooves, so
the crown looks fine and it runs OK until ring flutter sets in. They've
also revised the ECM tuning several times, which is probably why only
the 2016 model year was rated 42mpg hwy and later ones 40mpg. The
problem is said to be oil additives, like calcium, lowering the octane
rating of the fuel that gets behind the rings and causing detonation in
a tiny enclosed space.

For me, using LSPI formulated oil and 93 octane gas was not good enough
with the May 2016 ECU programming, especially after I had it tuned for
higher boost. I was sure I was OK, but I was not.

The app gives you the ability to remove or delete “trips” that it records. For
instance, if you’re not driving, you can tell it you’re not.

You can also disable the app’s ability to phone home, too, if you want.

I didn't think anybody but Craig cared.
Want to decide what one I'm buying and pay for it today so I'll have it
next week.

The top contenders are both still in cars.

Probably go with the one that's local, 12k mi, with turbo for the same
price as the 500 mile engine in Detroit without turbo. But I still like
the idea of an engine with only one tank of gas through it, will call
Detroit and see what they'll sell it for with turbo attached. Not that I
need a turbo, but it's easier to not mess with turbo oil lines, gaskets,
and single use exhaust manifold bolts if I don't have to. Can probably
sell my existing 26kmi turbo for a couple hundred once more of these
cars get out of powertrain warranty.

If I go with the local one I'll take my camera and have a peek inside
before I pay for it. That one's in a 'black' car, so I might end up with
a package deal with a door and fender, if it's black granite metallic
and not plain black. Want to put my black granite 2017 together and get
it out of the garage to make room for the red 2016. Get both of them on
the road and I can sell one, pay down some debt.

I usually drive right past cops with the cruise set on 74. Might be a different
story with AZ plates though. They have people pulled over all the time with out
of stare plates with their crap pulled out of their car all over the ground
looking for drugs.

Re: [MBZ] OT maybe Honda transmission fluid is magic

That's the problem that Barney (E320) exhibited. Except that
when cold it worked slightly better. Whine, and no-go-ness.

Never fully resolved, but will get another look soon once my wife
fully steals the other E320 from me and the X5 is gone. I had
changed fluid and filter one more time, but never took that crucial
longer road test. (Accompanied by chase vehicle and tow rope.)
It's been pending for a year and a half now...

2020-10-02 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Are you sure some accessory like the power steering pump or the alternator
isn't making that whine? Mechanic's stethoscope would help locate the
source of the noise.

I like the idea of the filter change.

Given the cult following, have you been able to find any forums that
discuss solutions to this problem, or is this a novel issue?

I foresee a coming mandate for EV imbedded GPS mileage (and who knows what
else) logging with auto download to servers when within Wi-Fi coverage.
Doesn't Tesla already have the hardware for this? Big brother is watching.
