I usually stuff the hard plastic line in until it hits the bottom of the oil
pan. Never had an issue on my Ford Taurus. Pulled the plug out to be sure, and
it was bone dry.

difficult to do, I think I tapped off the lighter circuit for the power.

That’s 1,300 -1,400 miles a month over its life. That’s a goodly amount of
driving. You have to wonder if it’s just random luck or if it has been diligent
engine service/maintenance that has kept this one going.
