83? That steering wheel belongs in a earlier model, also the headlights
should be the 280E style ones but I could be wrong and very early 83's
still

came out had the round ones (poor lighting).
Also I doubt wether the bottom end is the cause of the noise unless severly
overheted or run with low/no oil. Timing chain and valves are a problem in
those motors but the bottom end is pretty well build.

[MBZ] Electrical problems

2006-06-08 Thread Roger Conlon

Hello,
I have a 87 300SDL, I'm wondering what might cause the number 5 fuse to blow
when I

put the car in reverse, it only blows then,
I can start the car in neutral and select drive and its ok.

I can tell this because the A/C- blower stays running.

The fuse designation chart lists fuse #5, as a 8 amp white fuse
that controls the following
back-up lamp, heating water valves, water pump, climate control syst, relay
aux fan term. 86,

aut. transmission electrics, blower motor inside temp sensor,
air condition compressor, electromagn. clutch/valve air injection.

I also have another problem that my blinkers and flasher do not function
this is control by the #2 8 amp fuse which is good because my clock
functions.

It controls

diagnostic term. 6
hazard warning system, clock
front roof light electronic radio,
vanity mirror light,
electr. illum. control

It did blow the fuse in the back of my Becker radio.

Any help info would be great.

Thanks
Roger

There's a pretty well documented timeline here:
http://www.factcheck.org/article348.html
According to it, Blanco asked Bush to declare a state of emergency two
days before the storm hit, on August 27, and he did so. On August 29
she asked him again for help. Not exactly the actions of someone trying
to keep the feds out.

While Bush isn't personally responsible for FEMA's slow response, I do
hold him responsible for appointing an incompetant political hack with
no disaster response experience to head the agency. Unfortunately this
administration has seen a return to something of the old spoils
system, where government jobs are given as rewards to people who are
politically loyal, not to the people who are best qualified.

Without knowing the offset (ET), hard to tell if they will fit or not.
The W126 takes an offset of around 25.

I bought some tires with wheels a few years ago and while the tread
was fine, they were sidewall checked and lasted only about a year
before I had an internal separation. Wouldn't do it again.

Price seems OK for now but the shipping seems awfully high.

The skinnerbox.steaky.org site CAN be browser sensitive. What browser
are you using?

Try this site: http://mb.braingears.com/ (it seems to like IE better
than Firefox on MY machine). May relate to the installed plugins or the

The company that made Heet went belly up about 20 years ago. There have
been different formulations over the years and some are methanol and others
were ethanol or blends.

I also remember when the station in town had a drum of alcohol to put in
the radiator for the oldtimers who didn't believe in Prestone or Zerex

We had a neighbor who drive his Model T until he died.

From: LT Don During my lunch break, I drove to our town's truck stop (a

The biodiesel was gone from the sign, replaced by #1 diesel. Went in

[MBZ] 300SDL Alarm System

2006-03-06 Thread Roger Conlon

Last night I changed a broken accelerator pedal on my 87 300SDL.
All I did was remove the two floor mats, then replaced the pedal.

Now this morning went out to warm up the car for the wife, open the
drivers side car door and the alarm starts going off, nothing I did with the
master

key with red dot would help.

Locked unlocked the car, started and shut it off, lock an unlocked the alarm
was still sounding or would start again.
Not much help reading the owners manual.

Is there a wire or switch I could have knocked off putting the floor mats
in?
I started the car after replacing the pedal an move the car and it was
fine.

Any suggesting?

This, btw, is one big reason I've installed a keyless remote

Yes, hub has to come off since the rotor is bolted to it from the back.

10mm allen driver, very tight.

Repack bearings while you are at it, using synthetic grease. McParts
will have the seal, bearings too if you need them (Timken).

[MBZ] 85 300D Instrument cluster removal

2007-02-09 Thread Roger Conlon

Hello;
I plan to replace my tach and non working clock with a remanufactured unit I
bought.

Was wondering what it takes/how to remove the cluster.
Does it slide out with the coat hanger positioned on it's side like the 126
model does?
Also wondering what cables to expect behind it, is there one for the tach
and speedo?

Should I disconnect the cables for the battery?

Should I disconnect the cables for the battery?

Some do, some don't. The worst you're likely to do is blow
the clock (unswitched) fuse if you don't.

-- Jim

Thanks Jim,
But could you go a little deeper in the meaning of the unswitched fuse?
For the clock.
That is the reason behind taking out IC the tach/clock, the clock is non
functioning

is there a fuse to it? Bought a re-mfg tach/clock for $45.00.

[MBZ] 85 300D Instrument cluster removal

2007-02-11 Thread Roger Conlon

Thanks to all who replied concerning the IC removal.
I did remove the steering wheel which did give me more room
to work with.
It was not a quick procedure.
Not much room to get a hand behind there to unscrew the speedo cable or to
reattach.
But with careful patience and a few dad gum its, the re-mfg tach/clock are
in and functioning

along with a re-mfg cruise amp.

I don't have a heated garage so I left the car run with the heater on until
it was time to unscrew the oil pressure line, I believe the outside temp was
a balmy 0 degrees F.

Thanks to all.

[MBZ] 300SDL windshield

2007-06-22 Thread Roger Conlon
Sounds like you got a good price on the glass, the two places I called
wanted $279 $250. (PPG glass)
The one place said they can reuse the molding and the other place would like
to order new molding
just in case.
So I guess my next step is to call the insurance co to see if the added
expense of the molding
well be covered.

There is no gasket for this glass, like you quoted below they use a
glue/urethane kit.

I got a new windshield in my 300SDL last summer at the local

leaked in the torrential rains we've been getting - even at highway

can't tell they touched it.
I think this windshield is glued in instead of using a gasket?

Glass - $98.52
4.8 labor - $72.00
2- Urethane kits - $20.00
tax - $9.48
total $200.00

We put a PPG windshield in our 1987 300SDL when we had it and it worked out
okay. Have the installer be careful of the two rivets on the top corners of
the roof that hold the molding down. I think they're aluminum and oxidize.
When they remove the molding the rivet that holds the molding clip on

I phoned Beissbarth ( the manufacturer of the spreader bar) and learned
that their price is appx. $ 199 for the spreader bar.
It has an MB number of 900 589 012700.

This may be a rather simple item to make for a fraction of the cost. I
am sure that the Beisbarth spreader has a built in
torque device pre set at 90-110 NM. However, it might also be done
with two short pieces of pipe with plates welded on the
end. The middle can be fashioned with a 18 piece of all thread and
two
nuts. You will however need a torque wrench and
a crows foot wrench to tighten the nut.

Your thoughts on the subject..

Constantine

Go through PayPal. They will require an expert opinion on company

write a letter stating why the dash isn't in excellent condition. Fax

Homosexuals seem to be one of the few minorities it's still okay to
discriminate against. I've always found it striking that the arguments
against gay marriage are mostly the same ones that were used against
interracial marriage, back when that was illegal.

2007-01-18 Thread Roger Conlon
Would it be OK to adjust the valves on a 85 300D in cold weather, say 20
degrees F, or would it be a no,no?

I have not done the valves in 2 yrs and I don't have a heated garage.
