If low compression or no compression on a cylinder or 3 is the situation
with this car, wouldn't it be obvious due to the sound of the starter? When
it's coming closest to starting, it sounds like it's catching on 3 cylinders
out of 5. I do have a compression tester. This may be the

Thanks, Jim! I want to find out how the GP's and relay are working in the
infamous Black '85 300D I'm checking into. If everything's in order and it
still won't start, it's probably in much the same state as the $500 1981
300CD that I had. It had tight, VERY TIGHT valves , and the GP's didn't
superglued the odometer.
How does this work? Do you put the superglue on the affected shaft/gear?

Is it harder to remove the NSS on a later W123 than the one on a '77 300D?
It didn't seem that hard on that car, just two 10mm? bolts and the bolt on
the shifter arm that clamps to the rod sticking out of the tranny. The
hardest part was getting the arm off without breaking the two ears and/or
Pinch bolt has to come out completely, just loosening it won't work.

That's exactly the sound it makes, and engine revs don't affect it. The
sound is coming from the right side, so I'll check the lower right ball
joint when it's up on jacks for the front brake job.

Driving hundreds of miles without a cold start sure helps the mileage.
That's how my '78 300cd was able to get 28MPG on the highway coming back to
Oregon from Southern Kalifornia. It never got mileage that good ever again.

Try as I might, I could not make it "Dangerous at any
Speed"!!
My dad threw that '62 Monza convertible quite hard into the corners as fast
as it would go with not even a loss of traction. The car felt like it was
on rails. It was a well-used 102HP with the powerglide 2spd auto. One
time,
carry a 9/16" wrench so
you could put the belt back on if you missed a shift.
That happened while we were driving the Greenbrier, but we didn't have a
tool kit with us at the time. We were about a mile from home, and made it
before things really heated up.
