Whenever it’s time for new tires, I always have them determine which of the
four is the best and replace the current spare. This guarantees me that the
spare is not a bizillion years old and it is a still useable tire but
essentially spent tire so if some asshat manages to nic it, it doesn’t hurt too
much.

Lately, sadly, I’ve been getting pushback from the big box tire joints when I
ask them to do that. Liability, you know. So now I simply take the best one
with me when I go and have Pop at the Mexican tire shop/Mexican meat market
swap it out for me. It typically costs me two 12 packs of Tecate.

[MBZ] Hey Curt….VW BioDiesel Question

2022-04-28 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
I’m over here in San Diego getting my cancer treatments (19 out of 28 complete)
and diesel is $6.19 a gallon. A few gas stations offer biodiesel for $6.09 a
gallon, but in typical California fashion they label it as a renewable energy
source somehow. I haven’t been close enough to a sign to see the percentages of
biodiesel it actually is but if I try to save that $.10 a gallon, which seems
to be ridiculous when you’re spending this much money on a take a fuel, I
wonder if that would be unadvisable in my 2014 Passat TDI?
Having Driven 1707 miles since I left my home on April 3, I’m averaging 41
miles a gallon.

[MBZ] CrossClimate 2s

2022-04-14 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
I got the CrossClimate 2s put on the Passat today. They look kind of strange
from the side. From the side they look very luggy and aggressive. They will
take some getting used to. Drives really nice and are quite on the freeway.

[MBZ] W123s

2022-04-14 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
I need a W123 back in my life. That white 240D Kaleb teased me with in that video is what I need since it was my first hard core MB lust. DIBS!! The looks, the sound, the feel….yeah. I think I’ve gotten over the idea I might consider wanting to buy a big-ass fifth wheel. That being said, I probably will sell my big-ass pickup in the next few months (2005 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT Quad Cab 4x4 Cummins 5.9).  Nine treatments down, 19 to go.  AZBob  Sent from Mail for Windows

Found a VW indy close to our hotel. Going to take it over at 1300 and he is going to put it on the lift. We will see. I talked to insurance bubba and he said $250 deductible, have to file a claim…wait until it’s reviewed….wait for them to decide where I can take the car…..leave the car for several days more than likely. Yeah, no.  Only if there turns out to be substantial damage under there. AZBob Sent from Mail for Windows From: Andrew Strasfogel via MercedesSent: Wednesday, April 13, 2022 8:37 AMTo: Mercedes Discussion ListCc: Andrew StrasfogelSubject: Re: [MBZ] Interstate Gator Unless the deer was insured... On Wed, Apr 13, 2022 at 11:30 AM Allan Streib via Mercedes wrote: > Did a quick search and I think you're right. [MBZ] Interstate Gator

2022-04-12 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
Sailing down the 5 today, having just finished my treatment for the day, I ran over a huge chunk of coiled up truck tire tread. Typically, I can dodge these rascals but today I was closed in my lane by a UPS truck on one side and a milk tanker on the other. Nowhere to go. It looks like it whacked the front air dam, of course, cracking it and the belly pan has popped out on the drivers side in the front behind the crack in the air dam.   Stupid me left the travel tool box I normally always carry in vehicles on trips…in my garage at home. I have a flashlight and a Leatherman. I know the belly pan is held on with Torx screws but I don’t know the sizes. I’ve walked the hotel property (there has been a hold up on us moving into our Vrbo) looking for a ramp-like place I could pull up on to be able to get underneath, but I suppose I will have to get very creative ‘cause I see nothing obvious. Or, should I just go back to the stealer where I just got my oil changed and ask if they could button it back up? Or, look for an Indy? Or buy a Torx set and look for a “ramp”.  AZBob Sent from Mail for Windows

Re: [MBZ] 1986 Escort DIESEL 5 speed manual on BAT

2022-04-02 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
In 1986, we lived in a single wide trailer. I was working for the city of Phoenix at the big shit plant. I was in-between Mercedes’, I was driving my 1970 Bug (Blanche) to the shit plant every day, and SWMBO was driving the ’83 Subaru GL Wagon. I suddenly got the gig at the old nuke plant. Our dinky little trailer house was 57 miles away from the nuke plant. I reckoned that was a long way to drive a Bug.So, I commenced that job driving the Bug. Being hired in March, it lulled me into a “hey-this-isn’t-too-bad” having lived here for only for four years. When the heat hit I looked at the diesel Escorts as an option. I liked them a great deal. Almost bought a white, manual, with cloth seats and air….and an AM radio. At the time I couldn’t find a good MB at the time.  Long story short…..bought a ’77 240D manual, no air.  AZBob Sent from Mail for Windows From: G Mann via MercedesSent: Saturday, April 2, 2022 3:26 PMTo: Mercedes Discussion ListCc: G MannSubject: Re: [MBZ] 1986 Escort DIESEL 5 speed manual on BAT New price when sold in 1986:$7,448 in 1986 dollars factor in inflation loss in value of dollar forcurrent sales price real value. 1986 Ford Escort LX Prices and Values - NADAguideshttps://www.nadaguides.com › Ford › 4-Door-HatchbackOriginal MSRP. Re: [MBZ] OT: Shocking video of fatal PA Turnpike pileup

2022-03-31 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
“Its not really "caused by a snow squall" it's caused by people driving MUCH
faster than conditions allow.”

When I was in high school we had old school driver’s education: behind the
book, gruesome old films of ‘50’s Detroit iron in mangled collisions complete
with body parts strewn about, then behind the wheel. God forbid Mr. Reinholdt
had to flick his Pall Mall out the window and grab the wheel as you were
driving on the interstate in the snow.

Mr. Reinholdt always said “there is no such thing as a car accident because
someone is always at fault.”

Thank you all.
I feel like it won’t feel like it is real until I complete these damn cancer
treatments.
I have been officially done for two weeks and have taken three calls and a
dozen texts to “put fires out”.
And, in case anyone wondered, six weeks of lodging in San Diego is stupid
expensive. Stoo-pid.
Now I get to participate in breaking the news to the MIL that she has liver
cancer. Yee frickin’ haa

[MBZ] Retired

2022-03-24 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
As of 1730 March 18, 2022, my 37 year career of making ‘lectricity was done. It
hasn’t sunk in yet, I still feel like I’m just taking time off.
What few, basic plans that we made for what we wanted to do upon retiring have
had the Kabash thrown on them for the time being now that we are in the throes
of eldercare.
I start my cancer treatments in two weeks. Six weeks of living in San Diego. It
will be good to get this taken care of.
Right now I feel like I have the fat kid plate at the Boo-fay. I’ll be glad
when some of these things start coming off.
What are my first tasks is trying to convince SWMBO that we need to make a
circuit of the United States ensuring that we get to New England around
September Chowder Q time.

Re: [MBZ] $6K Repair or Different Vehicle

2022-03-19 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
To put a tidy little bow on this string of emails, we were offered $4500 in
trade value for the Jetta on the purchase of a 2021 Outback. The girls fell in
love with it after they drove it.
I told the dealership GM that in 1983 I bought a 1983 Subaru GL Wagon off of
the showroom floor from Evan Mecham himself (ring a bell anyone familiar with
AZ history) from his Glendale Subaru. Yesterday, 39 years later, I bought
another Subaru off of the showroom floor. No one seemed to be as excited as I
was about that, and no one in the building ever heard of Ev Mecham.
This Subaru seems very nice. The tech is overwhelming. The owners manual is 600
pages. Hell, the “Quick Start Guide” is 200 pages. The young salesboy, in a
very polite way, told me he realizes geezers like me like reading the manuals
when they get a new vehicle but most everyone else watch’s YouTube videos that
have supplanted manuals.
My ‘83 GL Wagon lasted a good long time. SWMBO loved it. When it his 250K miles
(many trips between IL and AZ) traded it in on a ‘93 Eddie Bauer Edition Ford
Exploder She drove that wagon around while I went through four cars:
‘68 250SE
‘63 Ford Falcon
‘78 Rabbit
‘68 Bug

Yes. Oil level is perfect.  This VW has the yellow oil can light for level (comes on and stays on) and for the sensor (flashes).  AZBob Sent from Mail for Windows From: Allan Streib via MercedesSent: Sunday, March 13, 2022 3:14 PMTo: Mercedes Discussion ListCc: Allan StreibSubject: Re: [MBZ] OT, Jetta Oil Light Have you checked the oil level? In my Volvo, the low oil warning comes on with the level at or very slightly ABOVE the lower mark on the dipstick, with the engine hot. So it seems if the yellow oil can light comes on and stays on it’s level related. If it comes on and flashes, it’s sensor related. The light did not come back on after the drive home. The Large Wimmin drivers can deliver things to me inside my garage with my
garage door is closed. Some packages they deliver that way and some packages
they don’t. I was out in the driveway the other day messing around with the
garage door up, and the Amazon guy showed up and said he had a package he had
to deliver in my garage. I said knock yourself out buddy boy. He asked me if I
could put the door down so he could raise the door deliver it and then close
the door. Lunacy.

[MBZ] OT, Jetta Oil Light

2022-03-13 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
SWMBO and youngest daughter were out running around in the 2014 Jetta 1.8 SE
(110k, well serviced from new by me) this morning. Drove down to the NASCAR
madness (daughter’s dance studio was performing), about 10 miles then sat in
the parking lot for a bit with the engine running. After ten minutes the yellow
oil light started flashing. As taught, they shut the car off and immediately
called me. after I gave them a blast for sitting with a car idling for 10
minutes with the current gas prices, I reassured them they did the right thing.
When they were done several hours later, she checked oil level (SAT), verified
nothing leaking, and then they hopped in and drove home without incident.
So where do I start troubleshooting this? Of course there’s no oil pressure
gauge on this vehicle so I can’t validate any oil pressures.
Thoughts?

Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices

2022-03-05 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
Diesel hit $4.59 here. Many sellers are resurrecting old ad phrases like “good on gas’ or “gas saver” in their adds when listing their over-priced, clapped out Asian shitboxes.  We carp about this but we will pay what we have to pay. I just make sure I keep things full in the outside chance we suddenly can’t get fuel. AZBob Sent from Mail for Windows From: Curt Raymond via MercedesSent: Saturday, March 5, 2022 10:52 AMTo: Mercedes Discussion ListCc: Curt RaymondSubject: Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices I fueled up my TDI at $4.59/gal last night, Angie scored $4.29. I'm tempted to fill a couple 5 gallon jugs at that price. The stations in the "big city" just east of us are asking $4.99...On a related note, used pickup truck prices seem to be coming down. I'm seeing 5 year old, 70k mile trucks in the $26k range again. I haven't seen any that age around in a year. These are the first sub $30k trucks I've seen in a long time. Curt Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android    On Fri, Mar 4, 2022 at 11:19 PM, Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes wrote:   Bodes well for us diesel lovers. On Fri, Mar 4, 2022, 11:09 PM Allan Streib via Mercedes wrote: > Four dollars a gallon here tonight for 87.> > Just keeps going up. $0.30 in the past two days alone> > Bodes poorly for values of used V8s and SUVs?> > ___> http://www.okiebenz.com> > To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/> > To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to:> http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com> > ___http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to:http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com   ___http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to:http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] CDI or BlueTec

2022-02-21 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
I saw a 2012 E350 BlueTec, 103k miles, show up at a Subaru dealer here. Ran it
to ground and in the process talked to the shop that performed all its
services. The dude‘s shop makes its living servicing and repairing Mercedes’.
We talked diesels in general and he revealed to me his love of older MB
diesels. He told me the car in question is squared away. He told me everything
he has done to it, he even sent me its complete service history. Then in the
very next breath he told me that I should run away from “modern Mercedes
diesels”. He has years of empirical data and it shows that people will spend
almost exactly twice as much $$ to correctly maintain one of these “modern
diesels” as people will spend to correctly maintain the gas version, same
model.

I know we’ve had his discussion before (CDI v BlueTec) but I need my mind refreshed, and we are likely, collectively, smarter armed with new information.   Drove the Passat TDI over to San Diego for consultation with the sawbones to set up proton therapy to eradicate my hitchhiker. I managed 40.2 mpg so that was great, but I discovered the seats are not very comfortable for long stretches of time. Now I’m kicking around the idea of selling the Passat and getting a probably much more comfortable ’09-ish ML320CDI, or a newer ML350 Blue Tec.
