Re: [MBZ] A GL

2024-07-23 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
I have never spent more than $4800 on a pre-owned vehicle (the ML I have now).
I have always felt pretty confident, utilizing my knowledge and experience
coupled with all y’all’s insight, in doing my own PPIs.
That being typed, I have decided that if I spend more than $6k or up on a
“newer” model MB I will have my Indy do a PPI.

The young fella called me and said he wasn’t expecting to get a call on it.
Labels himself a “Mercedes Enthusiast” and he was really surprised how good of
shape it’s in. Starts right up, drives, stops, “sounds right”. He said one of
his ham-handed underlings punched the hole in the grill.
He told me I will likely be the old person there to check it out since nearly
100% of the people he deals with want late model Hondas and Toyotas.
He said he will meet me at the gate in the morning and he’s glad it “will be

Seller finally responded.
carfax reports minor damage in 2014 but it doesn’t show what area of the
vehicle was effected. Otherwise it was purchased new in Beverly Hills and
serviced there regularly until 2013, 55k miles, sold to someone in Bakersfield
and was regularly serviced there until seller buying it in June (seller is a
guy trying to be a small, independent dealer).
He said he’d bring it over to my side of town so I can see it. I just might
take him up on it…unless the CarFax should make me nervous.

Also, could I scan it with this scanner I use on the W163?

In perfect shape it might be a $5k vehicle but $4500 might be more realistic.
It’s 16yr old but maybe the diesel adds a bit of value.

Add up all what might be needed (CP swap figure $1k easy to get a “new” one for
$400, maybe $400 for programming, and $200 for fluid/filter, you do the work
not paying someone to do it) and back out from say $5k and there’s your number.
The CP might be ok though, you’ll have to see the scan.

Let’s see…..Johnny Italiano bought it for $5000 at the auction and when he went
to drive it home he learned it was in limp mode. He has it priced at $4000, and
told me that he’s prepared to lose his shirt. It for certain needs the
conductor plate, a windshield, and tires soon.
I think $1500 might piss him off, but I don’t know his definition of “loose mya
shirt” is.

$416 for a windshield from SafeLight btw.

Oh for sure.
He couldn’t even describe it. I’m pretty sure that’s what he was describing in
his broken English. He’s a 22 year old kid fresh from Italy.

I guess I’ll take 20 pictures of Mr. Franklin and my scanner and start at $1500
(depending on the codes of course) because he kept repeating how he paid $5k
for it at the auction and he’s gonna “loose hez shirt” on “dis dizzle”
I think it can be cleaned up and sorted and be a good driver. Oh, and it needs
a windshield. Would I get it insured, wait a couple days then call insurance or
just pay to get it replaced? I have no earthly idea how much a proper
windshield costs.

Finally made arrangements to see this thing with the seller. And of course,
when I get there, he says that he doesn’t have the keys that his brother took
them accidentally so my first visit was simply looking it over. He bought it at
an auction for five grand. It looks, pretty darn good. It’s in limp mode which
he didn’t know what it was or how to describe it very well. I’m going to try to
meet with him tomorrow when he has the key and put the scanner on it but he
says he’s gonna sell it and he’s gonna take a loss on it so I could really make
that happen for him. I think because all in all it looks like it’s in pretty
darn good shape. there’s no hanging out that would indicate that it has any
issues with the oil cooler seals.
So…limp mode for this would be conductor plate as well, correct?
I suppose scanning it will tell the tail.

Seller won't answer the oil cooler question I asked but he did supply the VIN
so I ran a Carfax.

Two prior owners, 90% of all maintenance/services done at dealerships (CA and
WA). One report of "minor" rear end damage in 2016. Having read through the
Carfax it seems all the important stuff has been done and maintained, no
mention of oil cooler work.

It's probably worth a look you reckon?

The TCM is under the steering wheel a bit to the left, you can pop off the connector and see if there is any fluid that has wicked up. If not check the connector at the transmission for fluid inside it. If those are dry it’s likely CP time which on a 722.6 is not expensive but a bit of a bother to swap (not as much as 722.9). Figure $200-250 for new CP and fluid and filter (which you should do anyway if it’s been awhile).  Plenty of utubers on how to do the job. And, of course, I decided to hop in the ML and drive it up to the Walgreens to see if the issue is still an issue and I suppose you all know exactly what happened…..It drives perfectly normal now. When the scanner arrives I will see what I’m working with. AZBobSent from my iPhoneOn Jul 9, 2024, at 10:41 AM, Bob Rentfro wrote:

Scan it and see if you have solenoid codes.  Any codes would suggest inability for TCM to talk to the conductor plate (I’m assuming 163?). The TCM is under the steering wheel a bit to the left, you can pop off the connector and see if
there is any fluid that has wicked up. If not check the connector at the transmission for fluid inside it. If those are dry it’s likely CP time which on a 722.6 is not expensive but a bit of a bother to swap (not as much as 722.9). Figure $200-250 for new
CP and fluid and filter (which you should do anyway if it’s been awhile).  Plenty of utubers on how to do the job. Valvoline Maxlife is a fluid you can use.
