Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 is Home, or Thank You Sir, May I Have Another?

2016-05-27 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

Dan Inquires:

Why would leaving the cap off to ostensibly prevent pressure from
building up, much as one does in a vergasser, not work the same way
in a diesel?

I figured "coolant cavitation". I did a little research, and I think
my suspicions are confirmed.
Basically, a diesel hammers so hard when a cylinder fires, without
proper coolant, properly
pressurized, coolant will form high pressure bubbles (cavitation) at
the cylinder walls.
In some engines it will eventually erode holes in the head and/or
cylinder wall. I suppose
this is why A. Marshall Booth (rip) was adamant on using proper
coolant, and changing

it on a schedule, although he never did (that I recall) explain WHY.

Here's a couple links, one is more engineer friendly (dry reading), that may
help explain the phenomenon. There is no direct statement "the
coolant system must be pressurized",
but I have come to that conclusion from the information and my own
personal experience.

Another +1 for Rick.

Herr Doktor Booth was also quite adamant about replacing the radiator
(tank) cap frequently, as loss of coolant and over heating usually
start with a bad cap.

More likely it just needs to be burped. It will stream bubbles for
quite a while with a good head/gasket.

Start it up and leave the cap off, if you start seeing it bubble up
its a head/gasket probably. You will see exhaust has escaping

What Rick Said (+1) If it runs on all five, FILL and burp the tank,
SECURE the coolant cap, and go for another drive.

THey DO NOT like to be run with a bad cap, and with the cap off, you
puked out a lot od coolant before the temp went up.

BAD Martha!

Dan inquires:

I had not secured the radiator cap with the intent that if there
were cooling system problems I would avoid pressurizing the system.
Coolant is burping out of the overflow. > When it settles down I
see it's down a ways, so I add nearly a gallon of water.

Most likely there were no cooling system problems.

Oops. I learned from experience, never, ever leave a coolant cap
loose on an OM602.
One of mine had a slow leak (fuel heater) and I left the cap loose,
thinking that avoiding pressure
build up would slow the leak. I severely overheated the engine
(wasn't paying attention)

and smoked the head gasket.

Cracked head?

Not likely. They are very robust.

Bad head gasket?

It probably is now. You will know when you start it. When a five
cylinder has a miss it is distinct.
If in doubt, crack open injector lines one at a time, and see if the
idle drops. (same as pulling plug wire on a gasser)

If it runs on all five, SECURE the coolant cap, and go for another drive.

Good luck, and keep the updates coming.

bit) is over or ending, so only i5 or i7 macs are workable, and they
are new enough they still bring significant prices for used boxes.
Plus the loss of 32 bit support is causing a high demand for i5 and
i7 macs, driving prices up. (I've learned most of this from Dan.
Thanks Dan!) (Intel is/was retarded)

Macs seldom need work, and that is the beauty of it. I am trying to
hang on to 10.6 because it still has Rosetta, and that has allowed me
to keep using Eudora, because it is so good for keeping archives and
easy to manage.

Now I am trying to get an alternate 10.11 install so I can evaluate
postbox or other email programs to find a way to move beyond 10.6.
Running eudora on xp on a virtual box is just as much of a dead end
now.

I bought a used MBP from fleabay but it was DOA with a toasted
motherboard, and I have to fight to return it and get my $ back.
That is not a good route. SMWBO and #1 daughter each have core 2
machines, so we will be forced to spend $ in the future for newer
hardware.

Macs will not boot with anything other than OS X. The Linux distros
that run on Mac always bootstrap off an existing Mac OS to run.
I went down this road a couple years ago when I first got my Macbook
Pro, I'd had troubles with PC laptops in the past and had been saved
by bootable USB drives. I never could get one to work on my Mac. I
consider this a HUGE limitation of the Mac...

Not without damaging the body.

If you wan to satisfy yourself, put a wrench on them and see if you
can loosen them. Then retorque until you are ready. I am sure they
will pop loose. Only ones I've had trouble with are on non 126 cars
rusted to oblivion. Even then I have been able to get them out.

Giving some thought to this job in the near future as an alignment
indicated some very minor issues in the rear caster, which I suspect
is due to the subframe and differential mounts needing to be
replaced.

I've done this some years back and don't recall it being that big of
a deal other than having to pry out and press back in the mounts
(lots of dish soap!)

I was wondering if there is a way to get at the threaded portion of
the bolts so I could hit them with some Kroil over the next month or

OS X 10.6 versions had to be done using the universal DVD installer

Its been done before. JFK did it, RR did it. Mao's successors did
it. The fault of your logic is that it assumes a pie of fixed size.
When Merkuns are unshackled, magic happens! Just look at the growth
from say 1870 until 1900 or even 1913! it was an amazing time to
live. The Merkun dream was real. Then the progressives, who had
been meddling even before 1860 got power and killed the golden goose.

The Merkun goose has been on life support since 1913. FDR strangled
it more. Most of the Prezzies since have only tightened the noose.
Since only JFK and RR loosened the noose after FDR, you can look at
the periods of growth that followed. Most of the RR growth occurred
during the last couple years and in the 8 yrs of the clintonistas.
The Clintonistas were prevented from tightening the noose because
Newt stood fast and Billy bob was more interested in raping women.

The TRUTH is that the SIZE OF THE PIE IS NOT FIXED! When the
goobers allow the goose to lay the golden eggs, the economy grows
rapidly! (take a review of what happened in the land of the iron
fist when Nixon got them talking about what might happen IF they
loosened the grip a little and let some people run businesses

After careful consideration, I believe scrap metals are the best long
term investment and hedge against runaway inflation that is sure to
start soon. Scrap will always retain value. If goods become
unavailable, you may find a substitute in your scrap pile. As long
as you are not in the scrap business, scrap is not considered
inventory, and is therefore not taxed. Scrap is generally not
considered taxable in "personal Property tax" states.

Unfortunately it is not suited to accumulation in suburbia. It takes

forceful recruiting, the number is still not that
high.
2 out of a thousand in HS that would act
confused to attract attention or have a
victimhood (victimship?) may be realistic, but
most will drop the charade.

Call it what it is: *ist effort to undermine the

running the same scams here and many others.

I heard on the radio yesterday that there are an
estimated 700k trannies in the US. That seems
like a kinda high number, but in terms of ratio
that is 0.2% of the population. I'm not sure
that is worth all the uproar but there you go.

I have not yet figured out what the criteria are
for "identification." Say, if I am need of a

[MBZ] drum roll

2016-05-12 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
We used to talk about a drum roll, not as a type of sticking, but as
when one of us carrying a bass drum tripped over something and rolled
around the drum.

Here is a Mercedes Benz Drumroll

http://mbworld.org/articles/semi-truck-full-of-mercedes-benz-suvs-tips/

Fortunately I never did a drumroll, but my friend Mark did one last
fall after the Alumni band halftime show. The tv crews left some
boxes sitting along the edge of the field, and Mark tripped over one,
rolled around the drum, and be came a casualty. It was ugly. He
split his lip and he makes a living jabbering on the radio.

Technically, the MBs rolled on a different axis, but lets overlook that.

That doesn't mean I don't get cheap stuff though, I bought a new
garden hose at Harbor Freight the other day, its excellent...

Very best garden hose I've ever had is one I bought at the
local industrial hose shop. They had a big bin out front
of 25' black rubber garden hoses, with machined fittings,
that they'd made up. I bought three, put them on the hose reel.
They weren't that much more than big-box hoses of the 'better'
quality. Goodyear USA rubber, IIRC.

They're maybe 10yo, still look and act like new. Heavy!

-- Jim

When I went to Koll-edge I bought a good quality green goodyear
rubber hose at the local hardware store.I was tired of cheap
hoses and all the problems they caused. I used that expensive hose
the whole time in that house, moved it several times until I built a
new house. after about 15 years, it was getting stiff, but was still
useable. After about 25 years, I got rid of it. It was too stiff
to be practical. In the early years it laid outside in the sun on a
concrete slab. In later years, I stored it mostly inside. RIP.

There are good hoses available. A good 50' hose will cost $50 to $100.

It is not a front drive car. It is not a transverse engine car. No
way! No how! I'd do that or even look at the finished "POSproduct!"

MB makes diesels with Plenty HP that would pretty much bolt right in.
You might have to do some chasing to find OE motor mounts, but I'd
bet there are ones that''d bolt right in. Ya gotta remember,
original HP is 60 DIN, so even 120 DIN will make it go like crazy in
comparison. The 200D 2.4 is a 20% displacement increase and it makes
YUGE difference!

How much HP would one have had originally? It'd probably be easier
(though sacrilege) to put in a VW TDI engine. The VE engines can
make 150HP pretty easily, for $1000-$1500 in mods, bigger injectors,
turbo and a chip upgrade.
In a VW you have to worry about the stock clutch for anything over
about 115hp, but if you were already transplanting...

incident the Valentine's Day massacre of peach blooms.

New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts lost 90 percent
or more of the peach crop, according to specialists.

Through a combination of the February freeze and a cold spell in early
April, the Hudson River Valley lost 90 percent of its crop, according to
Dan Donahue, commercial fruit tree specialist with the Cornell Cooperative
 Extension.

"That Valentine's Day massacre really did us in," said Mary Concklin, fruit

much for that peach cobbler this summer."

New Jersey lost about 40 percent of its crop in the southern region of the
state, where 4,500 acres of peach trees are located.

"This is not just a local event," said George Hamilton, field specialist

Re: [MBZ] OT: Peach crop wiped out I NE States

2016-05-09 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
You can loose a peach crop several ways. If it gets too cold too
early, you kill the buds. If it gets too cold at the coldest part of
winter, it will kill the buds. If it starts to get warmer, then
turns very cold, it can kill the buds. And, if the buts are breaking
or if the tree is in blossom and you get a hard freeze, it kills the
blossoms. THe exact temperatures for each killing temp at each stage
varies by variety and by the temp history of the fall/winter up to
the date in question. From bud break until the fruit is set, the
tolerable temp changes every day. If you are in an area that grows
a lot of peaches, the Extension Hort guy should have the temps and
descriptions of each stage. Even then, microclimates can make it
hard to predict. some varieties are more or less tolerent of the
cold. In general the "Fiery"

varieties of peaches tolerate cold better than other commercial varieties.

In general, if the temp hits 20 below, you won't have a peach crop.
By blossom time, temps as high as 28-29 or 30 can cause crop loss.

In 1940 (11-11-1940) the temp dropped something like 70 degrees in a
couple hours in the midwest. This radical temp change to well below
freezing caused the water in the tree to freeze, expand and it popped
the bark off the limbs, killing the trees. It was devastating. For
example in 1939 or 1940, Iowa was #3 in the USA for apple production.
(Far above its "children" Washington and Oregon.) in 1941, the state
was pretty much off the map, there were so few producing trees that
survived.

The problem I have with crimp joints is when moisture gets in. You
have dissimilar metals, galvanic corrosion, oxidation etc. And in
the worst cases, little cups that hold water to increase the
oxidation, corrosion etc. In the climates I have lived in moisture
always gets in.

Oh man, might as well open the oil debate, at least we've been

I'd suggest if you make a good Western Union joint soldering is as
good as anything.on the other handIf you've got a good proper crimp

[MBZ] fuel cans - spouts

2016-05-08 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
I had a couple of fuel cans i have picked up along the way with no
spouts. I decided to get some spouts this week and boy is that a
trick!

Apparently bug brud"DUH" bumster has decreed from on high that we
can't buy a gas can anymore unless it has some mickey mouse
malfunctioning valve do-HICKEY in it. I found online a product made
in St Looie, called ez-pour that is a regular spout with a cap. I
had 2 brands of 5-6 gal jugs and of course they had different cap
sizes.

I took POSitive out for another 40 miles or so round trip to the
nearest farm store (TSC). They had the regular type, and a high
volume type for dissels that won't work in modern vergassers with the
tiny fill hole. I got one of each because if I need to put benzin in
both, I can swap the spouts around with the extra caps. Each spout
comes with 2 caps that fit most prastic jugs.

If you live in kollyfonia, you can buy their "water jug" spout and
use it on a gas jug. Thanks to moonbeam, you can't buy a spout for
gas can in PRK and other *ist run states.

[MBZ] Ideas?

2016-05-08 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
Seems like a quiet weekend. Everyone must be busy with mama, yard

I have probably 40 or so hard drives ranging from 10 gb to 40 gb left
from when I used to supply removable drives for classrooms. (and a
few 9 gb scsi drives)

Rather than pitch them or salvage them for the magnets, does anyone
have ideas for creative uses for old HDs? scrap is not worth much
these days...

most of them are less than 10% of MTBF, so they are in good operating
condition, but technology has passed them by. For example if they
were used for 5 classes, they would be about 500 hrs of total
runtime, with say a 10,000 hr MTBF.

For instance, I suppose you could take out a platter, cut holes or
slots with a laser and make a simple music box where the holes or
slots are like the little pegs on a music box. seems like a lot of
work to replace a $2.00 music box.

half OK I'm going to insult him with a lowball (NO LOWBALLERS) price
and see what he says. Laws laws hep me y'all he say yes. I'm gonna
need a steel codpiece if mama gets wind of it.

I was thinking that if you put in a dew drive you might be safe, but
there's no telling what they may have on the mainboard: Network wake
on signal, permanent backdoor, etc.

Perhaps there really was a reason why the computer people at Los Alamos

Re: [MBZ] Battery info

2016-05-07 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
I had figured out that the H8 seemed to be the same as a 49. For a
while a 49 was $150 or more while a 93 was ~$100 at advanceauto. I
bought the 93 as the CCA was the same. Last time (Feb) the prices
were the same.

Thanks for the info.

Group 49, or 93, or H8 or ???

I decided to get answers. Battery Council International
(BCI) is who applies the "group" number - based on _physical_
characteristics like size, terminal type, terminal location,
etc.

I found a slightly old, but still newer than any of my cars,
BCI Battery Replacement Data Book at

Looking at this, the "BCI Group 49" is equal to a
"DIN H8 / L5" or a "EN 88L5"

The BCI 93 is the same width and length - but not so tall.
175 mm rather than 190 mm.
This cross-references to a DIN T8 / LB5 or a EN 88LB

BCI group, DIN code, and EN code do not include any
electrical or chemistry data.

Some of the charts I found (not the 2013 BCI) lists a Group
49/93. It is the width of both the BCI49 and BCI93 (175 mm),
the height of the BCI93 (175 mm) but 9 mm longer than both
the BCI49 and the BCI93 (353 mm). Looking at one of my cars
with a BCI49 in it, there _might_ be enough room for a
battery that's 9 mm longer. Maybe.

A number of the charts I found must be from the same source
as they have the same typo - the BCI 93 length is listed as
"93 mm", not "353 mm" as it should be.

The difference between the Group 49 and the Group 93 is the
height, the Group 93 being 25 mm [1 inch] shorter.

~
So, the ones that will fit, listed in a descending order of
_volume_ - which means the first will be the biggest, and
maybe the largest capacity too. This will be inaccurate as
the dimensions I'm using are maximum external:

49, 93, 94R, 92, 98R, 48, 41, 40R, 91, 97R, 47, 96R, 90, 42, 67R, 99R

In addition, a Group 99 will fit, but the polarity is
backwards, and it's small - so not a good choice. I'm
leaving it out of the rest of the lists.

There are two heights, The short 175 mm ones are:
93, 92, 41, 40R, 91, 96R, 90, 42, 67R, 99R

Leaving as the tall 190 mm ones:
49, 94R, 98R, 48, 97R, 47, 96R

There are two case styles. The OEM has a ridge sticking out
the side at the bottom on both ends. Maybe as a hold-down
clamp? It looks to me like it has no purpose on my 123s.
Maybe in some other chassis it will matter. The ones with the
ridge are:
49, 93, 94R, 92, 48, 91, 47, 90, 99R

Confused? Yeah, me too. In summary, I'd likely buy the
least expensive of any of the "it fits" list except the 99,
leaning toward the long or tall ones that probably will have
greater capacity.

[MBZ] POSitive news

2016-05-06 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
Took the POSitive out for a drive tonight. Probably about 100 to 120
miles. It performed well. This was the longest drive since the
Diesel Kleen started to cut loose the soy oil polymer tank lining and
cause massive fuel filter pluggin, resulting in the tank coming out
and a week of cleaning. I can tell though that after I finish
redoing the rear suspension i will need to start on the front. I'd
guess it has a bad ball joint.

The fact that it was flawless on the road was good news, as was the
unexpected fact that the sunroof works well and correctly. Two
POSitive things for a change!

Fortunately, I have a spare pair of front LCAs now, so I can rebush
them and put them on the POSitive. Those ball joints are good and
fairly new, but I will probably replace them anyway.
