[MBZ] Back to 124 Daily Driver

2024-02-14 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes

I inherited a car and had too many cars – 4 to be specific. I decided I needed
to consolidate. I sold my 2022 F150 and I am taking my 81 Cadillac to a car
show at the end of the month and a buyer is meeting me. He wanted the car
earlier. The point I am getting to is that I will now be daily driving my 90
MB 300E. Sometimes I forget how nice the 124 is to drive!

I did find an 82 300TD (123 diesel wagon) that looks great. They want $20K for
it with only 115K miles and it’s a two owner. I know that’s a lot of money,
but these have been going for crazy money. It makes me think there is
something wrong with it. I have had 123 diesels before. But, never had a
wagon. Assuming the rear suspension is good, isn’t that the big thing that is
unique to the wagons?

[MBZ] Oil filler cap leak?

2023-10-16 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I have now made a couple speed runs from Memphis to Biloxi, MS running 85-90 on
the interstate. I noticed a little bit of oil around the filler cap and pooled
up a tiny bit by the valve cover gasket. It is only on the right side (looking
at the engine). It looks like it ran down from the oil filler cap. It was only
a teaspoon or so of oil.
I think it’s the oil filler cap. Do these leak? Is this common?

The previous owner used ligui moly 10-40 for the oil. I’m thinking about using
Mobil 15-50
(The one with extra zinc for higher mileage) or Delo 15-40. Any
recommendations?

[MBZ] Auxiliary fan?

2023-10-04 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I noticed when I was driving back this weekend that when I stopped and turned
off the car the temperature of my 124 would climb pretty high. Running at
highway speeds or even in town, it would never get very high. It was staying
below the 100C mark. It has a new OEM thermostat, the antifreeze is nice and
clean, condenser is not clogged up bugs or dirt, etc.

[MBZ] 210 v 211 v 212

2023-10-03 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
According to Dan and Rick the 210 is the Camry of Mercedes. I was casually
looking at wagons and found two 211 wagons. One has 99K on it and is sort of a
boring beige with dark gray interior. I’m wondering if the fact that it is
almost to 100,000 miles that means a bunch of neglected maintenance will be
due.

I also found another one that has 155K in it and it half the price. Silver
over tan. The price is good, but when I googled the VIN number, I found it was
sold at Copart almost 2 months ago with 144K on it. I don’t think the fact
that it was sold Copart disqualifies it automatically. But, it does make me
wonder how it would end up there instead of at a dealer if it’s as nice as it
looks.

Both of these are 2009 which I think means they are after the problem with a
gear/sprocket that is too soft. I don’t know much about that. Both are also
4matic and both are gas.

Finally, I found a 2013 E350 4matoc with 102K. It is obviously the most
expensive being more than double the cheapest and 150% of the other. I know
Zero about the 212.

[MBZ] Initial review of 124 after 1500 miles.

2023-10-02 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I had to drive my recently purchased 90 124 300E on a longish trip. I drove
from Memphis to Biloxi, MS and drove a lot down there for a week and drove back
last night.

I don’t know if it’s my imagination or if a couple of Italian Tune -Ups made a
difference. It seemed to drive better on the way back.

I drove close to 1000 miles total. On the way down I was thinking that it
should feel more powerful. The last 124 gasser I had was a 95 and the M104
feels more powerful.

I haven’t been thrilled with the fuel mileage, but it did improve. On the way
down and a few days of in town driving I got 17.8 MPG. The car requires (?)
91 octane. But, every time I have gotten gas they only have 93. So, when I was
on the coast I got 89. On my drive back I got 19 mpg. I filled up and checked
the tires and added a little — up to 37 psi. On the remaining 300 miles I got
21.8 and it definitely drove better and felt more powerful. I cruised for at
least 100 miles running at 82 mph.

I guess these car were made for highway cruising. In town, it feels much less
powerful than modern cars.

The camper is equipped with a four-cylinder diesel engine mated it to a five speed manual transmission.

The pros. Original paint is in excellent condition, the engine runs exquisitely well.

The cons . in need of brake work, some minor, cosmetic, fiberglass work, and a new windshield. All parts can be sourced overseas, or manufactured here in the US.

That’s all Greek to me. I’m basing it on what I read was the problem it.
Mechanically it worked. The original owner drove it with the v-8-6-4 still

Perhaps I should amend my original statement to the 1981 Computer Technology

1981 Coupe DeVille — with the V8-6-4.  It was GM’s very early attempt at cylinder deactivation. It was a great idea, but 1981 computer technology wasn’t up to the job.  It was only offered for 1 year.  It’s a great engine 368 Cu (6.0L) once the cylinder deactivation is turned off. This is accomplished by removing one wire. Technically the 368 was used in 1980 also without the cylinder deactivation. They also offered it in the Commercial chassis for a few more years. Donald H. [MBZ] Real world MPG and shifter question

2023-09-14 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I checked my mileage on the new to me 124 300E and I was a little disappointed.
It was 16 and that included travel on the highway. My commute to work is only
8 miles, but about 5 of that is on the highway. My big Ford F150 4x4 Crew Cab
got 17.5 in mixed driving. Shouldn’t I be getting 18-19 mixed? 20 plus for
all highway?

The shifter knob/handle whatever you call it is the only thing that doesn’t
look new and perfect. The black rubber is a little dry and looks old. Do those
just screw in? I have seen wood replacements and it looks like they are
threaded at the end. Is that right?

Re: [MBZ] OT whole house generator

2023-09-13 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
All of these emails about ways I could have saved by rigging up a different
generator and potentially electrocuting myself and having an electrical box
that may or not be code has convinced me I absolutely did the right thing.

The last time the power went out the house behind me lit up in 20 seconds. He
has a generac. Every time his came on and I’m dragging extension cords around
and figuring out which things need to be on first and which ones can wait and
will it get too hot or too cold and did I remember to fill up my 5 gallon gas
can, etc I realized he didn’t even give it another thought.

Most importantly — my wife said she would rather have the generator than
putting in wood floors. She’s happy, then I’m happy. Except when it comes to
cars, then the rule is as long as I don’t mess with hers, she doesn’t care.

My problem with the little portable was that I could run the refrigerator, a
freezer, a few lights, maybe the TV and not much else. And that required
running extension cords all over the house AND running home from work and
filling it up with gas.

Plus (and this happened after I decided to get a whole house generator) a small
but efficient group of thieves hit my neighborhood a few weeks ago and stole my
generator and my weedeater. It was my mistake for leaving it in the carport.
Apparently a BUNCH of people had stuff stolen.

Next years home improvement project will be converting the carport into a
garage. It’s plenty long (my 81 Cadillac fits in easily) and it’s plenty wide,
but it needs a garage door. Have to save up for it.

Mine is a Generac. They said two years for the first oil change unless we run
it more than 200 hours. So, I guess that means every 200 hours or 2 years
whichever comes first.

It will “exercise” every Thursday. It’s funny you used that term because that

[MBZ] OT whole house generator

2023-09-12 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
My neighborhood has a LOT of very large and old trees. Just this year the
power has gone out 5 times. We got pretty frustrated and decided to pull the
trigger on a whole generator that runs off natural gas that is coming into the
house anyway. It has an automatic switch and does everything on its own.
Pretty amazing technology.

They just finished installing and testing it today. Interestingly, there is no
maintenance for the first two years. The first thing is an oil change in two
years which is included in the “free” maintenance for 5 years. I wasn’t there
today when they finished installation. It would have been interesting to watch.

Yep, I’ve known a few lawyers that bought a plane thinking it will save them
money. Most sell the plane within a year. One guy upgraded all the avionics
and spent $100,000. I think he felt lucky a year later for what he paid for it
(minus hanger fees).

Re: [MBZ] If OK don does not want it, I might buy it

2023-09-11 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Several years ago I flew on a King Air like this one several times from Wichita
to Liberal, Kansas. Instead of a 4.5 hour drive it was an hour and 15 minute
flight. That’s a very nice plane. We had several lawyers with clients who were
more than willing to pay the cost instead of that much drive time. I could get
used to it. But, maintenance and hanger fees add up fast AND I’m not a pilot!

I got to fly on one of the FedEx Corporate jets. It was a Global 6500
(Bombardier). Flew to Harrison, Arkansas from Memphis. Usually a 4.5 hour drive
and it took about 39 minutes. Now, that was a luxury.

Any particular areas of concern on these?  I have wanted a wagon for a long time.  But, the 123 Wagons cost a fortune. The 124 diesel wagon is the same. The 300TE Is hard to find. And anything recent scares me because of all the tech and reliability.  So, the 211 Wagons are good? I drove a loaner 2005 E500 a friend had. He had spent several thousand dollars on struts.  I read about some issue with the radiator that blows up and trashes the transmission.  I loved driving it. I’m sure the joy had a lot to do with the V8. Donald H. SnookOn Sep 8, 2023, at 11:01 AM, Floyd Thursby wrote:

[MBZ] Leatherique

2023-09-07 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
My 124 has leather rather than MBTex. I’m a real fan of MBTex because it wears
like iron. I suppose leather is an upgrade. The seats are in great shape with
hardly any creasing and no tears. But, the leather is not soft. It’s almost
hard. It is very smooth and I don’t want (or need to) change the color.

I have not ever used Leatherigue. I don’t need to do the crack filler or
sanding or the total restoration. I want to soften and condition the leather.
I think a few folks on here have used it. Is the two step package what I want?
It’s the Rejuvenator and the cleaner.

[MBZ] Is a diesel worth it now?

2023-09-06 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Recently diesel was so expensive that I’m sure a lot of folks were wondering if
it makes sense to drive a diesel. For purposes of this I’m setting aside the
reliability/durability argument. I realize that is the factor that is most
important to many.

If just the issue of efficiency and cost is considering, it looks like diesel
would make sense again.

I just filled up at Costco with 93 for $3.55. The station across the street has
diesel for $3.87. I compared the cost of my 124 gas versus a 1990 300D 2.5.
Using the EPA mileage estimates and their formula of 45 % highway and 55% city
at the above prices per gallon.

The gasser 124 costs $2950 annually. The 300D is $2250. Maybe this ONE reason
the 124 Diesel is still selling at a premium.

[MBZ] Replacement Key cost

2023-09-06 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I called my local dealer to see if a new key can still be ordered. They can,
but they are $50! I haven’t ordered one in years, but they have definitely gone
up. I don’t need a key except as a spare.

I know the new fancy keys are a lot more $. But, it’s is just a steel key.
Isn’t a dealer the only option? Because you have to provide registration to
order it.

[MBZ] Early review of BAT Sale

2023-09-06 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
As I mentioned earlier, the BAT transaction was going very smoothly. The car
has arrived, I have looked it over and I’ve driven it. I can say definitely
that I am very happy with everything. The seller communicated well, the
description was honest, any issues (radio) were disclosed and he included extra
parts he had not mentioned in the listing.

I used BAT shipping. I figured it was better than trying to get quotes from a
ton of companies I knew nothing about. When I had a question, BAT answered it
immediately. The car arrived within 1 week of the end of the sale. This was
my first purchase through BAT and I was very pleased.

[MBZ] Obligatory oil question

2023-09-05 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I found out the seller of my new 124 has been using Liqui Moly 15-40 for oil.
He has only had it since 2021 and drove it less than 5000 miles.

Is there any reason to keep using it? I remember lots of discussion from Dr
Booth about synthetic oil. And many other differing opinions. I don’t mind
using full synthetic. Mobil 1 isn’t horrible especially when it’s on sale.
But, I don’t remember the conventional wisdom on the best oil for the M103.

[MBZ] 124 Tires

2023-09-01 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I watched a couple of Motorweek Retro Reviews (which I really like) and the
were reviewing the 124. The videos I watched were from 86, 90 and 92. In them,
Motorweek loved the 124, but was critical of the tires saying they were too
narrow and too soft.

I’m wondering if I could upsize the tires on my 90 300E without changing the
wheels. I don’t need or want to put stupid-big wheels or tires on it. But,
maybe just a slight increase. The current size is 195/65/15. I tried a few
online calculators and I think the 6.5J wheel will allow a tire up to 215.

I found some 205/65/15 that would likely work. According to the calculators,
it’s a pretty small difference.

Am I wasting my time? Is that small of an increase going to make any
difference? I don’t drive aggressively. My one issue with the current tires
is they are Michelin Premiere a/s which are good tires but they tend to wear
quickly. I have had them on other vehicles and they were comfortable and
quiet, but the lifetime is about half of many other Michelin.

That will probably sell for close to that. If somebody had $50k to put into it,

An A220 pulled out in front of me. I don’t remember seeing many of those on

Re: [MBZ] Back in the fold

2023-08-26 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I did sell you that you that one! And it was a great vehicle. Hasn’t it been
around to several others now? You and Craig and maybe others? It probably has
400K on it now.

And yes, I thought it was too small then. Of course, I’m smaller than I was
then too (about 40 pounds) and since then I have had 29 cars. Some larger and
some smaller.

I realized something recently again that I had forgotten earlier. I like cars
too much to have only one and I dislike car payments even more. So, I plan to
sell my new truck 2022 F150 Lariat and save a lot of money on payments.

I have been looking for a 124 and was focused mostly on diesels.
And if I could have found another 300D 2.5 for sale that was as nice as this
one I would have gotten it. But, this one has had everything fixed. I’m sure I
could have found a cheaper version but then I would have had to do all this
work.

Yep. The administrator works for an insurance company. In this case, the BMW
made money selling it and the Lexus dealer made money getting the work. I will
never feel bad for an insurance company. Some actuary has run the numbers and
on some they might lose and most others they make some.

[MBZ] OT Extended Warranty success story

2022-06-16 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I imagine most people on here wouldn’t buy an extended warranty. And I have
never bought one before. But, back in September I decided I needed an SUV. We
went on a family vacation and taking the dog, kids, stuff, etc we didn’t have
much room in my car.

I bought a 2014 Lexus GX 460. It’s not the biggest SUV, but it is still full
size and three rows. I bought it with only 39,000 miles from the local BMW
dealer. They offered to sell me an extended warranty and I immediately said
no. Then, I wondered what crazy number they were going to quote me. They said
$2000 for 4 years and 48,000 miles — on top of the miles it already had. I
started thinking with an 8 year old vehicle things like an alternator or a
starter or power window motors are going to fail. None of those are
outrageous, but a few repairs here and there and it’s not hard to get to $2000.
This is the zero deductible top of the line coverage.

I got an oil change last week and they called me and said the timing cover is
leaking oil and said $3000 to fix. BUT, I had the warranty. They covered it.
I watched the video on how to do it. ALL the stuff in front has to come off.
It’s a huge job.

I picked up my car at lunch and it’s all done and it cost me nothing. I only
mention this because it is so rare that a car extended warranty (other than
CPO) actually works out.

[MBZ] I don’t understand this BAT result

2022-06-06 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Obviously this car is exceedingly rare and special for some reason.

I’m guessing if others are out there, they are talking to BAT now about listing
them.

[MBZ] 124 Wagon

2022-06-03 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Anything special to look out for 124 gasser wagons that would be different than
the Sedans? I suppose the SLS and accumulators would be the primary thing?

On later 124, the other things to check are the wiring harness and the
evaporator. Right? I keep finding 124 wagons for sale and they are really
growing on me.

It’s going to be a small wedding if the car doesn’t even start and run.

2022-06-03 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Are these the ones that have the radiator problem that costs $3,000 and if it
fails it can kill the transmission? I drove one of these as a loaner and loved
it.

[MBZ] 123 Wagon

2022-06-03 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Pretty cool 123 Diesel Wagon. Has a new (upgraded) injection pump that the
seller claims raises HP to 200.

https://thembmarket.com/1982-mercedes-benz-300td

It also has 472K miles! It would be fun to get it to 500,000 (or more).

Re: [MBZ] MB diesel education and advice

2022-05-26 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I agree a Hybrid would potentially be a great solution. And I already started
looking for a Lexus ES Hybrid. I found one 2-3 months ago that I should have
bought. Now, the newer ones are priced as much as they were new. All hybrids
are probably going to skyrocket.
