I found an 84 300SD with only 69K miles. Supposed to be in perfect like new
shape. Pictures do look like it. Anybody near Jefferson, GA and want to take a

When I worked at a large Oldsmobile and Honda dealer (97-2001), the order of

1. Service Department
2. Used cars
3. F
4. New cars
5. Body shop

Yep. The administrator works for an insurance company. In this case, the BMW
made money selling it and the Lexus dealer made money getting the work. I will
never feel bad for an insurance company. Some actuary has run the numbers and
on some they might lose and most others they make some.

Unlikely for either. They are both the only dealers in the area for their

[MBZ] OT Extended Warranty success story

2022-06-16 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I imagine most people on here wouldn’t buy an extended warranty. And I have
never bought one before. But, back in September I decided I needed an SUV. We
went on a family vacation and taking the dog, kids, stuff, etc we didn’t have
much room in my car.

I bought a 2014 Lexus GX 460. It’s not the biggest SUV, but it is still full
size and three rows. I bought it with only 39,000 miles from the local BMW
dealer. They offered to sell me an extended warranty and I immediately said
no. Then, I wondered what crazy number they were going to quote me. They said
$2000 for 4 years and 48,000 miles — on top of the miles it already had. I
started thinking with an 8 year old vehicle things like an alternator or a
starter or power window motors are going to fail. None of those are
outrageous, but a few repairs here and there and it’s not hard to get to $2000.
This is the zero deductible top of the line coverage.

I got an oil change last week and they called me and said the timing cover is
leaking oil and said $3000 to fix. BUT, I had the warranty. They covered it.
I watched the video on how to do it. ALL the stuff in front has to come off.
It’s a huge job.

I picked up my car at lunch and it’s all done and it cost me nothing. I only
mention this because it is so rare that a car extended warranty (other than
CPO) actually works out.

[MBZ] MB diesel education and advice

2022-05-26 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I have been out of the MB diesel game for too long and can’t keep up on the
nomenclature and which ones to avoid.

If I was looking for a Mercedes diesel that would get 30+ mpg and is pretty
reliable which would I look for?

I know the 124 diesel with the 2.5 (602?) is great. And the 603 is very good
too. (Right?)

The 606 in the 124 and 210 is also good?

Then, the CDI started and the Black Death is a big concern and the blue tec is
next. Someone mentioned the other day that bluetec has its own issues — most
notably it is not good for relatively short drives like a 10 minute commute.
It really needs to be driven for a while to get everything heated up and
working.

My cars now get driven to work only 6-8 miles one way. Half of that is on the
highway - obviously not for long. Then relatively short trips on the weekend.
occasionally we drive long distances over a weekend 600 miles or so maybe every
few months.

So, if I want a fuel efficient MB diesel that doesn’t have to be driven 30
minutes at a time, should I be focused on 124 and 210 with the 602, 603, and
606?

What was the six cylinder non-turbo that was in the 124 and 210? I remember
hearing great things about those.

2022-05-24 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I drove my Lexus GX460 this weekend on a 775 miles round trip. One station was
$4.89 for premium. For a big 4WD SUV, I got 19.2 mpg which doesn’t seem
horrible. But, at these prices (4.75 average), it was almost $200 for gas.
Diesel was over $5 per gallon, but a 2014 Mercedes E250 Bluetec (I saw one for
sale) would have cost half as much getting 40-42 mpg.

I messaged the seller. He says everything works and they did the 100,000
maintenance. BUT, they did say the EGR code does occasionally come on.

I was just checking on that and it looks like this is a fairly common issue
except I read stories about lots of different fixes. Some claim the EGR just
needs to be cleaned. A few others said the DPF is bad (not expensive and not
hard to replace). Others said it was something about the flow (which is very
expensive).

Anybody dealt with this? I think the same engine was used in the E class and
the GL and ML.

Other stuff I read talked about deleting the EGR and doing an ECU tune.

[MBZ] Glow plug adventure

2021-02-02 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I was suspicious that the 81 240D had a bad glow plug because it was hard to
start and there was white smoke on start up.

I ordered Bosch glow plugs. they arrived and this afternoon I attempted to put
them in.

I managed to get three of them replaced. however the one which is second from
the firewall was so tight I never could get the old plug removed. I tried all
sorts of tools and even bought a 12 mm deep socket. Unfortunately, everything I
tried ended up almost rounding off the glow plug.

One of the glow plugs was wet. The other two looked okay with typical light
soot.

I also change the fuel filter today. After changing the 3 plugs and the fuel
filter I decided to take it for a test drive around the neighborhood. It ran
fine. I still think the linkage is worn or loose. It doesn’t have much power.
But, when I returned home, it would not shut off. I even tried the stop lever
which seemed to sort of bog it down but it kept running. The only thing I
could think to do was dump the clutch and make it stall. That worked.

So, is this all an indication that the linkage is messed up since it wouldn’t
shut off even with the stop lever? Or did I knock some vacuum line loose
working on the GP.

Any ideas how to get the last glow plug out? There isn’t much room to maneuver
and it is close to rounded off.

[MBZ] 240D purge

2021-01-24 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I did a diesel purge with the kit from Kent (Mercedes Source). It worked very
well. I thought. At first, it was spewing out a lot of white smoke. About
halfway through it smoothed out and had no smoke. None.

I took it on a drive. It is still a little slow. I’m thinking valves are out of
adjustment or the linkage is too loose.

When I got back I parked it in front of my house and moved my truck. When I
went back to start the car, it was a little hard to start despite being warm
after drive on highway. It is 50 degrees here. So, it’s not exactly cold. When
it started it blew out LOTS of whitish smoke. I mean lots! I have not changed
fuel filter yet.

The reserve light was on when I got from Kaleb even though it had 1/2 tank. It
went out when I filled it up. But, it came on again with 3/4 tank. I drove
another 100 miles and the light was on with half tank. So, I guess the sender
is all
Gummed up. Could that also mean the sock in the tank is all clogged up? How do
you get that out without dropping the tank?

will bring you to 85-90mph pretty easily.
Start with linkage, and all the maintenance stuff of course”

Ok. Good thoughts. I’ll start with the linkage to see anything obvious.

In terms of maintenance, I figured I would start with stuff I can do like Fuel
filters. I have a diesel purge kit too.

I am thinking I should probably have the valves adjusted/checked. I noticed
when it starts up, it runs a little rough until I give it more fuel. It smooths
out. It also has quite a bit of whitish gray smoke. My old worn out 82 300D
with 400K miles would blow out black smoke.

I’m wondering about the glow plugs too. Isn’t there a way to check them with a
multimeter? I remember changing the plugs on my 617. I thought I would start
with the hardest one. It turned out the one right in the middle was the

[MBZ] Initial thoughts of 240D was Re: Instrument cluster Fuse?

Kaleb wrote:

>

I made it all the way home. I stopped a couple times to take a break and tried
to figure out instrument cluster and fuse issue. Never did have luck.

Nothing flew off! Thankfully. I do understand what others have said about how
slow these are. And yes, it takes some planning ahead.
It was good on flat stretches. I could maintain 70-73 mph. A few times, if
there was a pretty good hill I could get close to 80. Having the new tires was
much better. I would have been nervous with old tires.

I had heard some people say that when these cars are at maximum speed they are
really straining. It definitely didn’t feel that way to me. When I was getting
up to speed it definitely generates some RPMS, but once I shifted into 4th, it
seemed to just settle in. It’s not fast — at all. But, once it’s in 4th and
cruising at 70 mph, it felt like it wasn’t straining. It was like it was
saying, “ok, here we are at cruising speed. This is what you get. I can do this
all day, but I’m not pushing too hard.”

I had the pedal Floored for pretty much the whole time. But, at 70 mph it
didn’t feel like it was working too hard.

I did check the mileage. I had to guess a little based on mileage traveled on
my GPS because the odometer quit. My calculations are probably pretty close.
27.5 mpg.

[MBZ] Trip to Okie Acres

2021-01-23 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
It wouldn’t be a real road trip if I didn’t get delayed! Stuck in DFW for 2
hours. But, Kaleb has very graciously agreed to meet later than planned at
Tulsa Airport for the purchase of the 81 240D!

I’ve had 3 prior 300D (123) and a 124 300D. This will be my first 240D. I’m
excited for the trip.

I think this car needs a name. I’m thinking something German or something that
means slow.

[MBZ] 123 for sale cheap

2019-10-12 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Selling my new to me 1982 300D
This is the one I just bought and drove back from Dallas. I found a really nice
82 240D that is really nice with working a/c!

Just replaced exhaust hanger donuts.
Valves adjusted last fall
New glow plugs at the begging of summer
Diesel purge with new filters just done.
Fixed Tach Amp (works 90% of the time)
All windows work
Radio antenna works
Sunroof works
ACC controller needs to be rebuilt just a matter of resoldering it — blower
motor does not come on.
Oil pressure gauge does not work.

205K on odometer, but it stopped working two years ago.

Just fixed/adjusted Bowden cable. It wasn’t kicking down into first. It is now.
This is the fastest 123 diesel I have driven! It is still a 123 diesel but SO
MUCH faster than it was and faster than my previous two.

Previous seller put new(ish) tires and wheels on it just recently long with
shocks, and control arms. I got a steal when I bought it for $1000. I have put
some money in it.

I have it on Facebook group for $1200 to the first buyer with cash. Located in
Memphis. Still have clean title from seller. If one of you wants it, I’ll sell
it for $1100. But, need to act fast.

Comes with replacement cluster and other parts in trunk! I have several pics,
but not sure they will go through list.

[MBZ] It’s a Major Award!

2019-10-07 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I took my old $1000 123 to the car show this weekend. I came away an award
winner!

But, I did discover that everyone who entered and paid the entry fee got an
award. It did include a framed photo of the car. I got a “bronze award.”
Unfortunately there were 125 cars in the show. And 123 of them got either a
gold or silver award. My poor car along with a 66 Mustang (that looked like it
was towed from the junkyard) were the only ones to get a bronze award. But I
can still say my car was an award winner!

Re: [MBZ] Climate Control unit 123

2019-10-01 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I understand a vacuum leak could have an effect. But, when I try the CCU (push
button unit) nothing happens. Wouldn’t that be more likely to be related to
the switch?

Keep in mind (and I’m just relying on the honesty of the seller), the previous
owner said he was told he could “hot-wire” the blower to get it to work. So, I
think he is saying that the failure is in the switch because the solder traces
have failed therefore nothing is telling the blower to come on.

Is that completely wrong?

Re: [MBZ] Vacuum lines

2019-10-01 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
It’s a 300D. It’s slow. But, not nearly as bad a 240D. The one time I drove one
of those it felt dangerously slow. Keep in mind, the last MB diesel I have
driven was my former 124 300D 2.5T and I remember thinking back then it was a
lot faster then my previous 123 diesel. So, maybe what I am experiencing is
normal.

The thing I keep wondering is if the lack of black smoke means this is tuned
perfectly (and thus no wasted fuel) or is something wrong and it is not getting
enough fuel which would mean the reason there is no smoke is because it is
running TOO lean. That might explain low power and no smoke.

One potential wrinkle I experienced last night was that the car seemed to run
tougher than it did when I drove it back from Texas. I didn’t baby it. I
wanted to see what it could do. I know the old advice is to drive it like you
stole it. But, I’m hoping I didn’t drive it a little too hard.

Seeing all the vacuum lines is sort of giving me a little PTSD from prior 123
experience. :)

On another note (which is also enhancing my anxiety), the three closest
Mercedes/European shops in Memphis have said they do not work on these old
cars. I was hoping one of these shops had an old guy that would be excited to
see one of these cars because they are so iconic.

I did find one shop in Memphis that has been around forever that I think will
work on it.

new (reman) blower motor and claimed that the problem was in the CCU. Anyone

[MBZ] Vacuum lines

2019-09-30 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Anybody have an actual picture (rather than the diagram) of the vacuum line
routing? I think there should be 3 lines going into the switchover valve. But,
I have 1 or 2. I also have a 3 way connector that only has two hoses going
into it.

I remember something about one line that a lot of people put a golf tee in.
But, I don’t remember which one.

My locks don’t work — and I’m not worried about that now. But, that could be a
symptom of vacuum leaks.

I’m wondering about the lack of power. Either I have forgotten how slow these
really are. Or, there is something wrong. A few things seem odd.

Almost zero smoke with hard acceleration, some at start up. But, even with it
floored climbing a hill, there is no smoke.

Transmission either shifts very early or the kick down isn’t responding. I was
able to drive consistently at 75-80. I even climbed a hill at pegged it at 85
and it was still accelerating. But, if I floored at 60, it accelerated but did
not downshift. Maybe that’s too high for it to go into second?

[MBZ] 93 (140) Diesel for Sale in Dallas

2019-09-30 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
The guy I bought the 123 from also had an 87 300SDL. I wish I would have known
that. But, he sold it already for $1500. He also has a 93 (140 chassis)
diesel. That’s a rodbender, right? He said the previous owner garaged it
since 2003. 129K. Transmission was rebuilt two years ago. Has new tires and
AMG wheels. I’m assuming it has not had the replacement engine. He wants $3K
but says he is open to offers. I’m staying away from it. But, for anyone
else that has an engine, this could be decent.

On this new to me 300D, the ignition key does not unlock the trunk. It has the

right? BUT, if the ignition lock cylinder has been replaced previously then a
key that I order by VIN number will not work in the ignition, right?

[MBZ] 123 Wheels and caps?

2019-09-30 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
My new to me 82 300D has much newer wheels on it. They are the 5 hole wheels
that are pretty wide. I can’t decide if I want to put bundts on it or try the
240D style with wheels and hubcaps. I’m a sucker for the painted caps since my
first MB (71 250) had the painted caps.

Anyone have wheels and caps that fit? Or a set of bundts? If they have good
tires mounted on them that might be the best way to go.

[MBZ] Exhaust fell down!

The exhaust on the cheap 123 I bought had rope holding the muffler up. I did

This morning I went to car wash and when I pulled out the muffler dropped. It

by the engine.

So, i don’t know if I will need everything all the way back or just part. I
have it secured now. But, it’s definitely loud!

[MBZ] Report from the road

2019-09-28 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I’m on the road between DFW and Memphis. This old 123 is having no problems
down the highway at 75 miles an hour. Very little black smoke. It makes me
think that the valves have been adjusted recently. It feels like much better
acceleration than my old 123 diesel.

Unfortunately the air conditioning does not work. Seller claims that it was a
wiring problem to the blower motor. But when I picked it up he told me it was
in the controller and needed to be re-soldered.

Couple of questions already. Re-check on motor does not work. Oh it didn’t
work for about a minute after I filled up with diesel and drove away. Be oil
pressure gauge also just not work. But we fuel gauge, clock and temperature
gauge all work.

There is a complete cluster in the trunk. Could the tach and pressure gauge
failure be in the cluster? How hard is it to replace the cluster?

I’m looking forward to getting into the rolling hills of Arkansas so I can do
an Italian tune-up

[MBZ] MB cheap car show vehicle search

2019-09-27 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Hey Listers! Blast from the Past. I am considering getting back into the
Mercedes fold! I am looking for a “show car.”Let me define the term. I am
not looking for a $10-20,000 car that is in show quality condition. I am
looking for an older and interesting Mercedes that is in good condition. I do
want it to look good cosmetically. But, I don’t mind a lot of miles. It is
okay if it has 250,000 miles (or more) as long as it has been maintained and is
in good shape.

Some of you may remember I moved to Memphis from Kansas back in December.
Memphis is a big change. The only connection I have to Memphis is my new job
and my older brother lives here.My brother has a fantastic car collection.
He has a 1971 Pontiac Grand Prix (in true collector car #1-1.5 condition) and a
1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Convertible and a 1976 Cadillac Coupe deVille (with
13,000 miles). I am enjoying hearing about the car shows and I have attended
a few with him. But, I feel a little left out. So, I am looking for my first
car show car. Whatever I buy will probably not be a real competitor for
awards. But, it will still be fun to participate. Most car shows don’t have
many foreign cars (at least not the ones I have been to), but I still think a
cool old Mercedes would be welcomed and appreciated by others. So, here is my
budget -- $4,000-5,000. I have about $5K to spend. But, I figured I would
have some transportation costs and minor maintenance, taxes, licensing, etc. I
might go slightly higher for something REALLY nice. I am thinking about the
following:

123 (gas or diesel)
114/115 if it won’t require a fortune to make decent
124 if it’s a coupe or a wagon
126 gas or diesel

I might be open to something older than 114/115 but I have no experience with
them and I’m guessing that I can’t afford anything decent from 107, 113, or
108/109.I would absolutely love a 114/115 especially a 250 because my first
MB was a 1971 250/8 with the 2.8 engine.

I saw a 77 280E on ebay and it looked fantastic and had just a little more than
140,000 miles. I asked a couple questions and waited for an answer. I should
have jumped on it. It sold within 12 hours of being listed.

[MBZ] OT Lexus question

2019-02-08 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I found a 2009 Lexus GS 450H (Hybrid). It is in GREAT shape. But, it has
150,000 miles. Anyone have a experience with these? The reviews I have read

the problem. The cost is around $2500-3000 to replace.

[MBZ] Need a car

2019-02-07 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I just saw all of your responses to my question about the 91 rod-bender. The
seller did confirm that it is burning a quart of oil in 700 miles. I think he
knows he is on borrowed time.

I was looking at it because I am in need of a car. My house in Wichita will
close next and I’ll have some cash. My current BMW has been great, but is
starting to send signals that things are going to get bad real soon.

I’m looking for a decent looking car. Not too small. I wouldn’t mind a 123
diesel if it’s nice. A 124 diesel would be better or a 126 gasser (not a
300se/Sel) would be great or even a newer MB — I am not very knowledgeable
about them. I also like Lexus or the Toyota Avalon.

I’m looking to spend anywhere from $2500-6000. Anybody got anything? Miles
don’t bother me if the car has been taken care of.

[MBZ] 91 Rodbender

2019-02-04 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I found a 91 350SDL. That would be a possible rod bender. It only has 129K
miles and appears to be in GREAT shape. But, Kaleb suggested that the mileage
is right in the prime window for bending rods. Other than (as Kaleb Suggested)
taking the head off and measuring piston height is there another way to check
the car to see if the issue has been addressed?

Is there a new head casting number that might show if the head has been
replaced? Obviously if the seller has records to show the repair/replacement
that would work. But, is there any other sign to indicate current trouble or
evidence of repair?

I agree! I know how to drive in snow. BUT, I will say that the traction
control/dynamic stability did improve things in my car. AND it’s a 20 year old

The big issue is all the electronic nannies that do the thinking for you. Folks

in late 50's or early 60's) in an old decrepit Ford coupe.
Not a big guy but very muscular, when he wasn't teaching he was farming and
logging.  He stopped in some small town in the south, either asking for
directions or had some car trouble or something.  Tried to talk to some guy on
the street for help, the response was something along the lines of "Boy, you
aren't from around here, are you?  You best just keep on moving, we don't need
your type around here!".  Some type of threat followed, so he "kept on moving".

Different guy also from WI, was alone in some big southern town, visiting or
looking for work or something, found himself in the wrong neighborhood and was
getting the stink-eye from the locals.  He tried to be a tough guy and stand
his ground, pretty soon a group of black men was chasing him down the street
and he was running for his life.  Just when he thought he'd outrun the bad
guys, he came upon a group of white guys, so he runs up to them to ask for help
and they promptly started beating him up.  He's saying "wait wait, I'm one of
you!" to which one replied "No, you're not from around here, you're NOT one of
us".

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking. Are you seeking an out of the way

Mississippi. But, the state certainly offers plenty of places where you won't
see much other than farms.

Mississippi has a population around 3 Million. It is a fairly large state in
terms of geographical size. The urban (or semi urban) areas are located on the
coast, around Jackson, and to a lesser extent: Hattiesburg and the college
towns of Oxford and Starkville. Oxford is a Beautiful town. It is home to
"Ole Miss." Because it is a college town, it is probably one of the more
liberal areas in the whole state. Of course, "liberal" in Mississippi is much
different than Liberal in Illinois or Massachusetts.

The least populated county in the state is Issaquena County. It is far west
and central. It is notable because it had the highest concentration of slaves
(before the Civil War) of any County in the Country. 40+% of the county is in
poverty and the county has the highest unemployment in the state.

Hinds and Jackson Counties are the most populous.

My father lives there. He has lived there for 30 years and loves it. But, he

things about the south. There are also some negative things. North
Mississippi in the old Cotton areas is still pretty backwards. It is VERY
racist. I'm sure that is a generalization and probably unfair. But, it is a
whole other world there. Jackson and the Coast are nice areas. The Coast is
probably more liberal and more diverse in terms of people from other places.
The small towns close to the Louisiana border can be a little scary for
Yankees.

It is the deep south. So, its God, Guns, and Country. The south is also home
to some of the kindest most generous people in terms of helping out a stranger.
-- Unless that stranger looks like he/she just got there from New York City.
When I visit, I stay on the coast. BUT, Vicksburg and Natchez are fantastic
places to visit if you are interested in civil war history. Of course,
Beauvoir (the home of Jefferson Davis) is in Biloxi on the coast about 10
minutes from my parents house. It is worth a visit and Tour.If you go to
the Coast there are a lot of great places to visit that I can suggest and some
