Re: [MBZ] Okie acres tire disposal

2021-09-25 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Use your backhoe or front loader to dig a pit, then sprinkle some diesel on
them, then a sprinkle of gas [stale gas if you have it] with a trail out of
the pit... pitch a match on the trail, let the gas fire off the diesel,
which fires off the tires... Then you have a contained fire that you can
bury over when you're done... A tire fire throws off a lot of heat and
smoke, so you might draw someone's attention with a fire call.

It seems that a not sun damaged or cracked full dash would be a worthy
investment is you had a car in restoration.. The initial ask price however

Re: [MBZ] I would further assert that the CL600 is indeed rarer than the CL55 AMG worldwide

2021-09-16 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Price point is set by assessing $10,000 for the "Rare", and $2,000 for the
car, it seems.
If I bought it, I would need to buy 12 sets of coil packs to store with the
car in a sealed climate controlled room [mouse proof of course] where I let
it "age to perfection" for a future sale at Pebble Beach...
By the time that happens, coil packs will no longer be available, and
having 12 sets [tested and certified] would make the future sale possible.
Doing that, would the car ever make the $1,000,000,000 sale price or above,
in 20 years?

When I was at military survival school, the question was, "What is the
difference between a gourmet and a violent scavenger?"

2021-09-15 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
An effective EMP event does not require a huge nuke. A small nuke,
detonated at altitude to maximize coverage.. or several small nukes
perhaps, could fry every circuit board and computer system. Your "smart
phone" would be a brick, TV stations, banks, gas pumps, food stores, cash
registers the list quickly gets long, because we are now deeply
committed to such devices, and have no backup system.
Suddenly, your cars do not run, you have no cash, your food in the fridge
is rotting, and you can't call 911 because the phone system is fried... cop
radios don't work... etc etc etc no backup systems in place.
What just happened to your personal quality of life, as you now know it?

Even when new, they were never a very popular car.
What they lacked in performance they overcompensated for in lack of styling.

Re: [MBZ] Lubricant for Protecting Tools

2021-09-10 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
If it has surface rust already, spray it with vinegar, which will clear the
rust [keep it wet with vinegar while it works. Neutralize the vinegar with
distilled water spray... dry it with a hair dryer, then coat it with your
preservative of choice.
WD40 does NOT give long term protection.
Wax will degrade and let in moisture.
The military uses Cosmoline because it works. It is a bitch to remove,
unless you use Mineral Spirits, a common paint thinner which dissolves
Cosmoline. rubber gloves and a stiff brush and some work, will take you
back to bare metal for whatever you've preserved.
What is cosmoline made of?
Cosmoline is a trademarked brand of petroleum-based, wax-like corrosion
inhibitors. Its chemical composition consists primarily of *a homogenous
mixture of oil-based, non-polar hydrocarbons*. Physically, Cosmoline is
brown in color and comes in various viscosities and shear strengths.

Re: [MBZ] Soldering irons

I bought one to use specifically as a plastic welder. Temp control adds
just the right extra control to stitch various thickness plastics back
together. Temp control and proper fill rod material with a bit of practice
and I've now added plastic welding to my "Repair Skills CV".
I grind my own tip shapes to accommodate the particular repair. Started
with a regular pencil type solder gun, and soon wanted better heat
control..

Good luck, China. It will be an experience you will not forget quickly.

Re: [MBZ] Prices

2021-08-15 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Can't offer any help on that issue. The Courts hold absolute hostage anyone
convicted of drunk driving. They mandate what can be installed, how it has
to be certified, how often it has to be inspected, and what it has to
report. Also, who can install such a device and how it must be "tamper
proof".
All backed up by the drunk driving laws passed by legislature.
Part of those laws also state the cost of the machine, the install, and the
court release to remove said machine, must be borne by the individual
convicted.
The companies which make or install the machines know the charge ticket is
punched in their favor, so no price breaks are given.
The legal intent is to make driving a "sobering experience" used only to
drive to work, and your court ordered AA meetings, so you can pay the huge
fines imposed for driving drunk.
I know all this because of an employee who spent 5 years in prison for
killing someone with his car while blind drunk, and his conditions of
parole required a vehicle monitor, with GPS locator. If his car was parked
in front of a bar, that was a parole violation and he went directly back to
prison.
Talented worker, as long as he was sober. Ultimately he died of liver
failure after a huge round of binge drinking.

The stance is all wrong, the tires are too wide and too low ... That era

Re: [MBZ] OT: Ghia notes

2021-08-09 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Seafoam was invented to solve a particular problem in the boating industry.
Outboard motors are a seasonal use device. Spring, summer, early fall, they
get used, then comes winter and they are stored [stored means everything
from left on the boat in the water to brought inside and kept dry]. All
that said, the months of non use brought about the fuel/ oil mix congealing
in the carbs and plugging jets, etc.. everything we are plagued with.
Then came SeaFoam, which dissolves all the crud and lets you get back on
the lake or river without the expensive annual engine rebuild cost.
Lucky us... it also works on cars, trucks, and tractors... Great stuff...
It pulls the rabbit out of the hat time after time. They even make a
version to add to engine oil that dissolves sludge in the crankcase. That
works well also... Cheap? no. but it works.

I'll take bets the starter is burned up from cranking on that big cat

The facts:

Driven 15,000 miles.
That comes to 384.7 miles per year of "driving".
Big cat don't like to purr much.

Re: [MBZ] Travel trailers

2021-08-09 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
IIRC, in the original post you said your dad bought the trailer new and
never used it? They came with an "owners manual" so if that is tucked in a
drawer somewhere, it should give you all the skinny on power requirements.
I have a 5th wheel, same setup, roof air, and it takes 220v but pulls 110
off of one leg of the 220 to run the blower, while the compressor is 220.
Coleman unit, which is very common for the travel trailer industry. About
the only thing that changes from installations is the BTU rating of the AC
unit, or the number of units on the roof.

2021-08-08 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Almost forgot, LUBE THE SLIDE.. a lot... slides like to stick and hang at
the worst possible time, like when you are moments from pulling out of
camp. I use dry film silicone because it doesn't absorb dirt as easily as
some others. While you are at it, lube the jacks, they will work with much
less effort.
Somewhere in the trailer storage bays there will be a power cord to hook up
at a RV park power plug. I'm taking bets that it has a 220 V / 30 amp plug.
If you are trying to run the AC on 110, the compressor is only getting 110
on one leg of a 220 V compressor, so it says.. this isn't right, and shuts
down when it tries to cycle on the compressor.

When you replace the roof vents, use the metal ones. They are easily
available, and don't break into dust at the first hail stone. Same sizes
made in both metal and plastic, within pennies of the same cost.
Most 5th wheel roof air runs on 220 / 30 amp for the compressor, but the
blower fan is 110, thermostat could be AA or AAA battery, or 12V. Go on
the roof, pull the plastic cover, and read the data plate. Also, get the
Mfg and model. Then go to google university for all the details.

Re: [MBZ] The 300TurD lives!!!! PT 3

2021-08-08 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I recall there is an in tank fuel filter that sits at the bottom of the
tank where the fuel line attaches. I wager that the filter is completely
clogged with "something". I would attach a cheap 12v fuel pump to the tank
outlet fitting and try to pump fuel into a container. If that fails to
produce fuel, then insert a section of fuel line into the tank via the fill
tube and pump out as much fuel as you can to reduce what happens when you
unscrew that tank bottom fuel filter from the tank [it will be messy, plan
for it.]
Once that tank filter is out, you can assess how to proceed.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Ghia notes

2021-08-07 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Chances are, that push rod is now bent. I would not reuse it.
Cause: Possible excessive valve clearance, possible weak or cracked valve
spring which let the rocker "float" out of the push rod pocket. or, the
push rod could have failed and bent on its own which would have made it
lose thus unseated itself.
Here is what your cam follower should look like. To replace it, you must
split the case. However, they are generally very hardy and I would think
you shouldn't have to go there.
https://www.jbugs.com/product/113109309C.html

I would pull the rockers and remove the push rod, inspect the valve springs
in place for damage or weakness [compare that cylinder to the others]. It
could be a simple case of the valve sticking open, giving excess clearance
for the rocker, which then unseated the push rod. Has the car been sitting
unused for any extended time?

Re: [MBZ] Glow plugs loop style

2021-08-02 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Since a relay is a pretty simple electrical switch that uses a small
current to close a larger circuit [ie starter solenoid] how about just
finding an off the shelf relay that has the same values for both the low
circuit and the high power circuit?
I wager the glow plugs don't care as long as they get the right volume of
energy when you close the switch to energize the "solenoid" that powers
them.
Buy one that doesn't say "Mercedes" on the box, but works the same.

2021-07-29 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
"Not more than a few minutes without overheating" speaks loudly of a
blown head gasket and intrusion of combustion gasses into the cooling
system... cooling system holds about 16 psi... compression gases make
140 +- at 400 F, so compression blows into coolant and makes it hot,
quickly.
Quick check, Open coolant tank, start engine, look for bubbles and surging
of coolant as cylinder pressure pushes out. If it does, head gasket is
leaking.

Re: [MBZ] Nice CD $4500

2021-07-26 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
It is about the most unexciting color combination possible, for myself.
However, if the bones are solid, it might be worth a careful and complete
repaint that would do justice to the model, major lipstick and cleanup to
the interior, as well... but only if it has good bones that would support
that level of investment.
All said, the ask price is above that investment level... so, deal killer.

Re: [MBZ] W124 window gremlins

2021-07-26 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
My avionics guy refuses to use crimp only. His argument is, a crimp
connection is only a friction connection, thus subject to failure. He does
both crimp then solder, then shrink tube to seal the connection joint.
He isn't cheap, but since I started using him, electrical related issues
have gone away.
His work is extremely tidy also.

I like solder and shrink tubing much better than tape. It creates a much
tighter seal and doesn't come off because of heat or cold like tape. It
also makes a smaller repair joint, which serves better in tight spaces.

Re: [MBZ] NC Covid shots

2021-07-25 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Based on near daily research of all available information about each of the
injections offered, I came to the personal decision that there was not
enough documented clinical testing data to warrant my personal well being
risk of being injected.
As time goes by, more numbers of people are having adverse effects post
injection, and more research is revealing the changes caused by MRNA. Until
all that is sorted out, in good clinical trial format, I withhold
participation.
The Nuremberg Rule [now part of the Geneva Convention Treaty] requires all
patients to be fully informed in advance, and be willing participants,
without coercion, before being involved in any medical event, trial, or
research.
IMHO, that duty to inform fully has not been met.
This is my personal assessment and opinions, I fully respect yours.

Re: [MBZ] Hiccup with the LB7

2021-07-24 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Somewhere in your fuel system, you have an air intrusion that lets fuel
drain back to the tank and the fuel system is losing prime, or the fuel
supply is not supplying.
Question: Does this truck have an electric high pressure fuel pump in the
fuel tank? If it does, it should supply pressurized fuel to the injectors.
Or, does the system use a high pressure oil pump to pump fuel to the
injectors [Ford has that system in concert with the tank fuel pump] .
Did you change all the fuel filters? Nick an O ring anywhere to make a
vacuum leak?

Re: [MBZ] HF Pittsburgh torque wrenches, any good?

I own 3 of each, 1/2, 3/8, 1/4 ...[all part of "go bag" tool kits] and have
put them all to good use with no complaints. No failures and while not
certified to aviation test standards, close enough. When I got them [bulk
buy while on sale, putting together tool travel kits for the fleet] I did
test them against a tested and certified torque wrench. They all were
within a couple pounds of the cert wrench. Good enough.
For the on sale price, a bargain. HF now treats their tools like Craftsman
used to, it breaks, you walk in, they give you a new one, no grief.

Re: [MBZ] MB to go all electric by 2030?

2021-07-23 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The true short fall with solar is not panels, it is battery storage, or
some sort of storage yet to be invented. We now have decent panels, at
decent prices, and panel production facilities with excess capacity [which
was not the case even 5 years ago].
What we do not have to "make it all work" is some way to capture energy
during daylight, and then store it for use at night, to charge EV cars,
cool or heat our homes, etc.
Easily, during a "solar day" there are megawatts of energy available for
collection. We as a society just have not been smart enough to figure out a
way to capture and store it for later use.
Producing more EV cars, and destroying fossil fuel production, without
solving this one critical issue first is stupid in a classical way.
If you want to be the next richest man in the world, invent a solution to
this storage issue that works, is cheap, and can be used by normal low tech
people, as part of their home equipment.

Re: [MBZ] MB to go all electric by 2030?

2021-07-22 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I hate to rain on the EV parade, but, who is going to invest the critical
and much needed $400 Trillion in building new electrical generation and
transmission lines to support all these new EV vehicles, in the next 9
years?
Graphic example: California just ordered all EV vehicles NOT to charge,
because the power transmission lines were at peak load and could not meet
the expected charging demands.
Record heat, record AC use, forest fires caused by overheated and sagging
transmission lines... etc etc... repeat across Europe.
Presently, there is serious discussion about shutting down Hoover Dam
because of extreme drought. The water level in Lake Meade is lower than it
has been in 50 years.
Mining for EV battery materials and critical component materials is in
extreme short supply, for the projected future.
Large power plants historically take 20 or more years to build, Large
transformers have lead times measured in years. Transmission lines? Who
knows for sure, few have been built in the past 40 years. Steel for
towers... made in the steel mills in China... Wire for lines... ? Who mines
the raw materials and what is the real lead time to make thousands of miles
of new transmission lines?
Asking for a friend.

I just sold a 100 sheet pallet of OSB, 1/2 inch 4X8 sheets. They had been
sitting unused for 4 years in the corner of the shop. I paid $5.95 a sheet,
I sold them at a bargain price in today's market for $35.00 each sheet,
which gave the very happy buyer about an $8.00 break over what Home Depot
and Lowes lists for, but did not have any.
Cash, buyer loaded, thanked me so many times I was embarrassed. Almost.
That stack of OSB paid better interest than money in a savings account.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Electrical Distribution Panel Relocation

2021-07-14 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Your existing panel, which you want to replace with a larger service panel
in a better location, will need to be removed and replaced with an approved
watertight sub panel. All the existing lines will then be connected inside
that sub panel with new lines that come from your new service entrance
panel using code approved connection blocks, with all the necessary ground
requirements met [to local code] and an inspection seal that says it's been
approved by the powers that do that in your local area.
As I recall, there are some code requirements about how high such a panel
has to be mounted, away from possible water intrusion.
This would be a good opportunity to make sure all the present house
circuits are up to code and safe because the city or county inspectors will
be looking for such things. [ie, they inspected the work, the house burned
down and killed everyone, their inspection seal and sign off is on file..
the insurance lawyers will name them in the suit.. ]

Drive it. I bet the computer has to re-learn everything because all the

You might consider replacing the O2 sensors since they are likely carboned

Re: [MBZ] 1964 220SE 4-speed

2021-07-06 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
tJust from the pictures, it has the look of a fresh repaint, which would
mean base coat / clear coat, instead of single stage original paint.
It does not have the look of original paint that has been well cared for by
multiple repolishes and buffing over years of ownership. That, coupled
with the look [again, only by the pictures] of the interior seat cover
condition, I'm seeing a mismatch.
I'm calling it a presale lipstick job and that suggests to me a very
complete in person pre-buy inspection, with a lift, and a MB certified
mechanic would be wise.
Anyone have sales prices for this model over the past 5 years? More than

Re: [MBZ] OT Electric Vehicles On Collision Course With Reality

2021-07-03 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Billions of government support dollars have been thrown at solar, wind, and
other alternate energy systems. Those government free money dollars
produced more solar farms, wind farms, and programs to build more. However,
each system to date has a fatal flaw. That flaw being, the wind doesn't
always blow the same speed, the sun doesn't always shine at night or in ice
storms, and the energy produced has no way to be stored to be used "on
demand" after it is produced... There are no huge city sized batteries to
plug your Prius into.
Add to that, the transmission systems for power are old, and tired, and
have not been updated or maintained. At current capacity, they are
routinely at or near overloaded.
Vulnerable, is the word that comes to mind. So, if you really want an
"electric only utopia" start building the support structure that will
support it. Or, learn to like fossil fuels.
I know, reality bites...

It is a law of nature that two things represent the extreme ends of any
spectrum.
Government on one end, and Reality and Logic on the other.
A bridge built of borrowed money to be paid back with taxes will never be
able to connect the two ends.

Try this:
The learning curve is pretty short, and it gives live satellite coverage
from geostationary weather satellites. Once you learn how to track weather
movement you can get a good visual image of what is moving to your area.
Wind and Temp [via infrared] is available.

Have a look at these folks:
https://classictube.com/

Click on the "Products" link at the top of the page. A page will come up
with a list on the right hand side, showing foreign cars that they provide
tube sets for.. Mercedes is on that list.
I have never used them, but it appears they have been around for quite a
while supporting the restoration world, and classic car world...
There is a phone link.. call and ask. Oh.. I notice they do stainless
steel preformed sets.

Re: [MBZ] W124 rear brake hard lines

2021-06-24 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Why take a risk, simply call a flatbed rollback tow company and have it
picked up and delivered to your home. Compared to risking a possible wreck
because of sudden loss of braking, cost v risk would be small, IMHO..
Since the mechanic probed a hole in the line, and you did not ask for it,
perhaps he would pay the tow.

It doesn't matter if they sell, it doesn't matter if they work. All that
matters is that they qualify for the huge government "go green program" so
they can absorb large government subsidies. Remember Solandra?

Re: [MBZ] Pressure filler -- has anyone ever used one of these?

2021-06-20 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I like them so much, I actually own several, and keep spare vane sets in
case they need rebuilt. So far, after 10 years of frequent and abusive use,
they are still pumping as new.
The pump bodies are stainless, the impellers are nylon and individual
vanes, so actually well designed.
I do take care to always only store them clean, so they are ready to use
for whatever comes next. The addition of a 12v switch at the pump, and 20
ft of good low voltage wire from the yard light section at home depot, with
nice battery clamps well identified [red and black for +- ] are worthwhile
mods. I now keep them in their own tool bags, with zip lock bags of various
fittings, and rolls of different size hose, which makes them a "grab and
go" item.

Re: [MBZ] Pressure filler -- has anyone ever used one of these?

2021-06-20 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
https://www.harborfreight.com/12v-dc-transfer-pump-290-gph-63324.html

Here is what I have been using for over 10 years to move fluids. Costs
less, and runs on 12 volts.
Ace Hardware sells bulk vinyl hose, you add barb fittings to the pump in
the size you need, fabricate whatever you need to attach to what you are
pumping fluid into, and drop the pickup hose in the desired fluid to be
pumped.
I used low voltage wire [home depot, in bulk] to make an extended power
cord [ 20 ft, in my case], and added a 12 volt on/off switch at the pump,
so I have easy control of pump / not pump.
Once I'm done pumping, I treat the vinyl hose as disposable, so no cross
contamination on next use, of another fluid.
List of things I have pumped:
Engine oils, new and used, various weights.
Transmission oils, various weights, automatic, and manual transmissions.
Rear End oils... various.. I've also used the pump to suck diff oils out,
then flush the pump and reverse lines to pump new oil in. [mineral spirits
to flush]
Diesel fuel... tank transfers, priming filters and injectors, etc etc...
Antifreeze...
Other stuff as it may arise... like brake fluid... I routinely use the pump
at the bleed valve to suck all the old brake fluid out of the line and
master cyl reservoir, on each wheel, then fill master with fresh fluid and
have a clean system.

Re: [MBZ] OT small towable backhoe

2021-06-14 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
On a number of projects that needed some mechanical muscle, I have called
up one of the local commercial rental companies for a backhoe, or a reach
forklift. The cost, compared to hiring someone in the business has always
been "reasonable" and I have usually rented for a week, because delivery
and pickup then washes into the "weekly rental fee", and I get to use it
for more than one project [if you have one handy, and you know how to use
it, "Projects appear".] Then, when I'm done, it's gone, I don't have cash
tied up in owning one. Overall, I've found it to be cost effective.
