Re: [MBZ] 1987 Bentley for $6300

2024-07-25 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I SWAG [scientific wild ass guess] that Bently parts cost is equal to Benz
parts times six, plus delivery time lapse of times 7.
Bently / Rolls are not production line cars but built one at a time [in
principle] so the supply chain for replacement spares is anemic when
compared to high volume production..
Not a Marque for the faint of wallet..

Re: [MBZ] 617 oil pan gasket

2024-07-22 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
On the MB oil pan in question, If you have a carpenter's level [metal on
would be best] lay it along the bolt line on each side and sight along the
contact line between the pan and the level.. The level will be machined to
within a couple thousands of flat and if the pan is warped, you will see a
gap where the level and the pan do not align and gauge how distorted it may
be.

Worthy of notice: As an Arizona car, no rust. Of particular notice, I see
NO cracks in the dash, and upholstery is in amazing condition, and also
shows no sun damage.. which in Arizona means the car lived in a garage, out
of the sun..
It is a very nice example of a "survivor car" that shows it has had love.
That qualifies it for a few extra Benjamins in the negotiations.
With a new set of Mitchlens, a paint correction polish, interior treatment
cleaning to put a high shine on the whole car and it's a BAT winner.. buy
it and flip it for mega bucks..

For the asking price, I would hope that horrible paint job is a wrap

paint job, which on that size vehicle could run north of 10K easily, in

IMHO, the paint detracts from value, enough to walk away, regardless of
mechanical condition.

Re: [MBZ] Kleb needs this -- Boeing 727 Cockpit through First Class Section

2024-07-04 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I owned and operated an aircraft component parts supply business for about
20 years. During that time, many 727's were put into "stand down" status in
storage yards here in the USA and warehouses full of component parts were
being sold off [which I bought with documentation]. The majority of sales
went into Africa, some into South America. All customers were quite happy
to have a good source of airworthy parts [with proper paperwork] during
that "era"..
Expendable parts like sets of tires, hydraulic flap actuators, and control
system parts were in high demand, because production of new parts to
support the worldwide fleet was drying up.
Engine overhaul parts were in very high demand also during that time. I
delivered, they paid, we were both happy.

Re: [MBZ] Kleb needs this -- Boeing 727 Cockpit through First Class Section

2024-07-04 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The 727 fleet worldwide reached the point where all time and cycle limited
components were life cycled out, and replacement parts became NLA, much
like we are having with our much loved Mercedes, older units.
The new aircraft that replaced them were faster, hauled more passengers for
less money, and used less fuel, so it was time to retire them to scrap
value.
So goes life in industry... newer, faster, better, wins the race to profit.

At last international count there are zero 727's in fleet service hauling
passengers. The remaining few in use are shown as cargo, or "special use"
[whatever that may be].
So, the market for 727 qualified maintenance techs is pretty dry.
I have an aviation friend that built a large new hanger-dominium when he
retired and he mounted the front section of a DC6 [everything forward of
the wing main spar] sticking out the front of his "aviation palace" that he
uses as a bar, so you can sit in the captain's seat and fly no matter how
drunk you get, since it is about 25 ft in the air.

It seems that there would be a solid market, since the cracked and often

since it is "in your face [and hands]" regardless of how close to a 100

Re: [MBZ] OT 1/2 scale f4u corsair Orderment

2024-07-03 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
My first thought is to buy it and mount it on a stand [enclose the engine
bay and make a canopy for it]... then use it as a wind sock on a private
airport. The canopy could be aluminium, just paint it white.
Hang a prop in the nose hooked to a wind generator and a battery bank to
run runway lights with an on/off switch on radio frequency, so you could
land at night.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Media For Vibratory Tumbler

2024-06-16 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Since you are polishing something that is chrome plated, walnut shell is
too soft to do much. Suggest you use the small triangle abrasives instead.
Since you want to polish the parts, not strip them, suggest that you
approach the task in 15 minute sets.. ie run them with the abrasive
triangles for 15, check them, add more scrub time as needed with frequent
checks on progress... a 320 grit triangle scrub, check the parts, if they
clean up, polish them with 400 grit scrub..
Since they are likely plated parts, and you don't know how thick the
plating is, caution is your friend.

Grind some ice cubes, They will help move whatever might still be in the
grinder, and have enough water to sort of "lube the move" as they are being
ground up.
Unless the Mrs. sent a stainless steel spoon into the grinder... then it's
time for a new one anyway.. [No, she will not confess .. don't ask me how I

Jim,
Brilliant idea.
Don't forget to factor in all the energy loss caused by heavy mining to
first collect the rare earth metals to make the EV batteries, and then
factor the loss due to disposal of those same batteries.
That would be a powerful presentation in visual form.
Do it.. form an internet group of skilled people who can do it, and with a

Re: [MBZ] Electric Vehicles

2024-05-07 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I will remotely consider owning an EV only when they come with a spare 5
gallon container full of electrons for when it is out of charge and out of
range of a place to plug it in.
Point 1: They are over priced
Point 2: Battery service life is limited and replacement costs far exceed
the value of the car when the battery dies.
Point 3: Disposal of the dead and unrepairable very expensive battery
presents a huge environmental toxic waste problem, for which there is no
current or near future solution.
Point 4: Even at the current ownership density, the electrical grid is over
task to provide sufficient electrons to "gas them up", and, strictly from
the engineering view, rebuilding the electrical grid to meet present and
future demands [if we all only drove EV's] would cost many Billions of
dollars, and take decades to approve new power generation plants, since
coal and nuke are now virtually outlawed, all viable streams have been
dammed and producing at capacity, [example, Lake Meade draw down in last 3
years left it nearly empty.]
Point 5: If you give proper consideration to the environmental damage
mining and processing of rare earth materials causes, world wide, to
produce the exotic EV batteries, then add the disposal environmental
problems , lack of ability to recover rare earth materials from the "dead
batteries" the highly touted "EV" comes off the assembly line with an
environmental toxic load that far exceeds its capacity to "Save the
environment" and that is brand new, never driven, even.
Bottom line, EV's are a man made environmental disaster produced under the
governmental guise of "saving the world"..
{ Short rant complete, note the Mercedes has structurally withdrawn from
the EV marketplace.. }

My best guess is that somewhere in Europe there is a car bone yard with a

anything is possible"... :))
The ask on this car is out of my lunch money limit, so I can only lust for
it.. If you buy it, take me for a ride... [even with the ugly bumpers, haha]

Re: [MBZ] O.T. Cleaning a Recliner

2024-04-19 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
This has worked for me, in Arizona also, so it may work for you.
Remove chair to the patio or driveway. Elevate the chair on blocks or
bricks to make it a comfortable working height. Recline it so the various
areas are all spread out and then:
Wet it with a garden hose on "spray" ... Spray the fabric with Dawn
dishwashing soap from a spray bottle ... scrub fabric with a soft brush [I
used one made for scrubbing leather seats from an auto store, but any soft
brush will work.. Work up a lather with good suds from the Dawn...
Rinse with garden hose and repeat if necessary on remaining soiled spots.
Rinse again..
Leave the chair in Arizona dry heat to drain and dry for however long it
takes.
The foam cushions will dry out, the fabric will dry out, and with the chair
fully reclined and open, it will drain away any remaining water and the
Arizona sun will evaporate the rest.
When it's nice and dry, [touch will tell you if the foam cushions are fully
dried out]. fold the fresh cleaned chair and return to service.

Re: [MBZ] Who wants to get strapped and go with me to get this

2024-04-05 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Take the VIN number and pictures of the car, If it has a license plate
still attached, picture of that, to your local Department of Vehicles
License office, tell them the story and ask them to do a title search on it
and a lien search.
Talk nice to them.. you might have to bump it up to a supervisor to get
results, but with the VIN number they can find if there is a title, if it
was reported stolen, or if there is a lien.. What they won't do, is reveal
the name of the title holder, or lien holder..
They can't give that out.
But, it's a place to start.. If possible, trailer the car to the DMV
office, and let them look it over... It's a pain to go through those steps,
but will lay groundwork for filing for a lost title, or other methods to
gain legal registered ownership [with registration and license issued].

Re: [MBZ] OT How stupid am i? Hot Tub,$300$400

2024-03-24 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
If you want a cold "hot tub" wire it all 110V ... If you want a "Hot Tub"..
you will want it wired into 220V with a stand alone dedicated circuit
breaker for the tub.. Plus.. you will absolutely want to wire in a circuit
disconnect "near the tub".. by code, you can't reach anything electrical
while in the tub and wet so plan that into the disconnect location.
Also, you will want a good quality, insulated cover, that can be opened and
closed easily, but seals the tub so critters can't invite themselves into
your new "critter water trough"
Have fun, plan for your electric bill to increase every time you heat the
tub full of H20... and chemicals,,, and, and, and... etc.

Re: [MBZ] Dorman v OEM

2024-03-21 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Overall, I have had good service with Dorman products.
In the daisy chain of chineseium, Dorman has been generally at a higher
quality standard.
Pick one up at the seller's, inspect it, walk it out to the car and do a
point by point comparison as to fitment.. Then decide.
Having it in your hand before you buy it is golden..

Re: [MBZ] Sidewall Musings

2024-03-02 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Dan,
This particular truck predates TPS systems, plus, I'm an old school kind of
guy when it comes to nanny type systems, I trust my own tire gauge and my
own eyeball reading of what I have.
Even though the Michelin tires on the truck are load range F and 10 ply
tires, [plus expensive] In talking with my Michelin supplier I found the
sidewalls are not as stiff as previous versions, thus, my efforts to find
what inflation pressure works best.
Good luck !

Re: [MBZ] Sidewall Musings

2024-03-01 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Inflation pressure?
Could it be that you are on the low end of inflation range instead of the
high end?
As an example, I have a 9,000 lb [empty weight] Ford dually king cab [4
doors] long bed diesel equipped with Michlens. Book says 70 PSI
inflation... However, at 70 PSI the truck has handling issues [feels not
glued to the road and easily wanders without constant attention.. I dialed
the pressure back to 60 PSI [all 6 tires] and it now feels like it is
running on rails. Good contact.
Played with the pressure again to find the low end of the curve, and at 45
PSI, the "road crawl" of the high pressure setting returned..
What you describe seems to be something similar to what I've had finding
the "inflation sweet spot" on this heavy truck. Another tool I used was a
laser temp gauge to read tire temps at various inflation pressures after
driving.. Low pressures brought elevated tire temps.
I hope this might help sort your issue.

Re: [MBZ] TIG welding exhaust pieces.

2024-02-03 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
A good weld requires good [read that perfect] heat control at the weld
puddle. Old Miller rigs only used solid copper windings in the transformers
which resulted in good stable power supply at the weld point, whether it
was stick weld or tig weld, or mig weld.
New Miller welders no longer use the solid copper windings [trying to
compete with the cheap welder competition most likely] and thus do not
yield as stable an arc heat at weld point. [still better than the
"chineseium" competition IMHO but not like the older rigs].
Next on that list is "duty cycle" .. which translates to "how long can the
transformers hold a stable arc power supply before it starts to degrade?"
Again... older still remains better IF it has well built copper windings..
Next, enter coolant at the torch for TIG.. "Keep thy tungsten cool" is the
rule, for extended run time and extended duty cycle.
Next, enter pre and post argon lead and lag time, which keeps the weld
envelope protected from contamination. Let the argon flow over the fresh
weld as it cools to keep the hot weld puddle from reacting to what would be
around it without the shield gas protection.
Next, now that you have good equipment, is practice.. one trick I was
taught was with a blank sheet of paper with a line drawn across it, and a
lead pencil... The line represents your weld path.. the lead pencil
represents your weld torch. You then practice drawing uniform circles down
the entire line which represents the small hand movements while holding the
TIG torch and running a weld to make "dimes" ... If you want to practice
larger multi pass welds, draw two lines outside the center line, and "make
dimes between them" , for a 3 pass weld, or more.
Once you get the hand eye coordination skills, and truly know the machine
you are running.. you will be producing welds good enough to be proud of
them..
Good luck.. and practice, practice, practice..

That's because you have a blown head gasket and your engine is cooked .
Engine compression is blowing into the cooling system which blows coolant
out. Classic symptoms of blown head gasket.
I will give you one dollar for your scrap car, if you deliver it to me, no
cost.
Otherwise, good luck.

Re: [MBZ] Leather in the W163

2024-01-18 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I have been using Groit's Leather 3 in 1 product with some success. I have
a Ford F350 with the King Ranch full leather interior, and with Arizona
heat and sun, the leather takes a harsh beating, so it needs regular
treatment.
The Groit's product seems to work, but with Arizona sun, the leather gets
baked quickly, so regular treatment is required.
There may be better products, Groit's is available at local FLAPS, so my
choice [for now].

I submit. Nearly every state now has laws that make it a criminal act to
talk on a cell phone while driving, because , in legal principle such acts
cause "distracted driving" and thus place the highway public at grave risk

Someone explain in simple terms how such EV displays, which take the

place others at grave risk of injury?
Where are the ambulance chasing lawyers we all complain about in all this?

2024-01-14 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
First, spray all the hinge points with a good penetrating lube. Then
exercise the hood up and down to work the penetrant into the hinge joints.
I had the hood on one of my 82 300D's get wonky [after setting for months]
and I opened the hood, then when I closed it, the hinge on one side didn't
work smoothly,, caused that side to not close and fit.
Could be, you're having the same issue... ??

Re: [MBZ] W163 License Plate Fasteners FUBAR

2024-01-07 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Two viable options:
Drill out the broken bolts, then increase the drill size [if you have a
number drill set slip up on it one drill size at a time until the outer
flange of the rivnut cuts off the internal compressed body, which should
leave you with a clean hole in the sheet metal, minimal paint damage.
Then, replace the seized / broken bolt rivnut with a new one. [have a look
at Temu.. search "rivnut tool" and "rivnuts" for a cheap tool that works
well.
Or..
Go to local FLAPS and pick up 4 nylon license plate inserts , pop them in
place, put new license plate screws in and never deal with rusted / broken
license plate bolts again.. [should cost less than $5 for the set].
The nylon inserts are hidden behind the license plate, so no one will ever
know until you tell them..

If there is a title loan held by payday loan type folks, that puts them in
legal first position. If you pay his ask and take possession of the car,
the title loan folks come to you to repossess it, and you have zero legal
standing without their lien release of title.. If you try to process a bill
of sale / lost title.. the state title / DMV will refuse to issue a title
to you. Check twice, pay once or...Caveat Emptor.

In principle, an autogyro is always in auto rotation. Like any flying
machine,, if you get behind the curve on altitude, airspeed or landing
place, or control, impact is predicted and injury box is pre-selected.

2023-11-26 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Volvo B18 turbo was a rare add feature, available from factory special
order in the 1978 era.
Since the engine is high compression [by turbo standards] the total boost
it is allowed to make is limited to keep things like head gaskets and
pistons from self destruction. Thus, available only as a "total kit".
I have one. New, never installed, complete. Bought it to install on the 220
GT Volvo [quite rare model] that I've started to restore, but put under
wraps and pushed to the end of the list. One owner car, perfect body, yada
yada.. owned in AZ and NV , Zero rust, etc..
There you have it.

Re: [MBZ] OT Medicare Questions

2023-11-26 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Welcome to Medicare.
It is a total system devised to be so complicated that no individual can
truly understand it, under the color of law, not the principles, and voted
on by elected persons who were elected using funds and influence owned by
huge mega rich pharma companies who have armies of lawyers to write
deliberately confusing rules and wrinkles, then defend any actions they
take, while you, the aged individual with limited resources to fight them
are kept helpless to oppose any decision they make, or action they take.
200 years ago, their business ancestors built and sold a device that pumped
tobacco smoke up the patient's anus and claimed massive curative powers,
while charging massive money [the basis for the common phrase "blowing
smoke up your ass"]. When it was finally proven that it produced no health
improvement, they dissolved that company and practice and produced a new
"miracle cure" to sell to the public. Repeat that pattern to present day,
just make it more involved and expensive [and less obvious].
They exist only to take your money and extend your life until all money is
gone, while double dipping from public money, wherever possible.
You exist only to try to live as long and as well as you can, against all
odds and obstacles if possible.
Is it a fair game? You decide..
Semi Sarcastic Rant over.

Re: [MBZ] I didn't bother with masking paper -- 1984 Mercedes-Benz 380 sl, $2, 000

2023-11-25 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Something is making metal to metal contact, relative to engine speed, so it
is a moving internal part, and sounds deadly, engine life wise.
Timing chain? or is this year not in that era?
In any case, trailer it to wherever you work on it.. and look for metal in
the oil and filter, whatever you find as the problem won't be good, or
cheap, and most likely it won't be just one little thing.. it will have
taken damage to multiple internal systems with a hammer noise like that.

Re: [MBZ] Kaboom

2023-11-23 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
My brother had that happen while driving in traffic. Suspension collapsed
to the point it ruined the front tire and steering was a real challenge [in
traffic].. Result, stuck in traffic, at side of road, 900 miles from home.
Tow bill, rental car to get home, shop charges to get fixed [over $3,000 ]
plus a rental while it was being fixed, plus flight to get car and drive it
home, etc etc.. all because an air bag decided to fail.
Brother is no longer a happy Merc owner.

Try spraying the area down with some stuff called "Super Clean Foaming"...
should be able to find it at your local FLAPS. Spray it on, hose it off,
pressure washer, or steam..
I've found it works the best of anything to date... available in squirt
bottle 32 oz size, or in gallon jugs , [can be diluted with water] and
applied with a garden sprayer to cover larger surfaces..

I would suggest you elevate the car on the lift, lay down heavy plastic
sheet, with something like sand bags to bolster and contain pressure spray,
with a path out the door, then foam the underside with Super Clean,
pressure wash , wash the plastic out the door, repeat as needed to get
finally clean..

Re: [MBZ] Shop air lines

2023-11-22 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Regardless of pipe size, ALWAYS install a shut off ball valve inline coming
OUT of the compressor tank, and ALWAYS close that valve, along with opening
the main off switch to your compressor.
Every time you leave the shop for longer than to take lunch.
Air leak = air compressor running = continuous running = compressor failure
or motor overheat = shop fire or great expense.
Plus, being able to close pressure to all airlines lets you repair or
reconfigure at any time desired.

Go for it.. you only live once, might as well "live large" with a private
jet..
Presently, there is a worldwide shortage of qualified pilots, so expect to
pay a premium to retain a chief pilot and co-pilot, with a backup reserve
flight crew. If you decide to indeed move into that level of upgrade, let
me know, I have contacts that you might find helpful for flight crew. .
In one of my past lives, I worked as a customer service engineer for the
company that built the TFE731-5 engines that aircraft has, I know it very
well. Excellent engines.
As with anything in aviation.. "Come to the airport, bring money".
Fuel capacity: 10,000 lbs of JP54 [Jet A]
Fuel burn per hour: 2,000 lbs per hour [working average at cruise power]
Current JP54 price per gallon:

Re: [MBZ] Do Harbor Freight floor jacks

2023-11-18 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Like you, I have accumulated several harbor freight jacks [and others] that
are either leaking down when loaded, or fail to pump up.. all need
resealed..
After seeing your post, I was finally stimulated to do a you tube search
for video of rebuilding such jacks.. there are several videos, teardown is
quite simple, it seems the magic trick is knowing the size of the shaft and
sleeve the needed O'Ring or seal is, or the model number/brand of the
jack...
Looks like complete re-seal kits run in the $15 or less range, and it's a
"simple job" to get to them.
So... something else to add to my "must do work list" since new jacks are
now into the $200 range [or more].
Thanks? hahaha..
