[MBZ] Models that have the same transmission as the 300 SD.

2006-01-16 Thread Nick Wellinghoff
Hi all,

Does anyone know, have a list, or know how I can find out what models of
Mercedes have the same transmission that is in the 1982 300 SD? I am
searching for used transmission locally and am getting a lot of replays from
people with similar models that say it might work in an 82 300 SD. Any
information or model listing with equivalent transmissions will be
gratefully appreciated.

For older p/s pumps, roughly up to the mid-80's and/or with V-belt
drive, some form of approved ATF is fine; with Mobil-1 probably being
the preferred ATF. For newer pumps, I'm kind of changing my thinking
back to Constantine's, especially on any car with the expensive
dual-converter pump (most with SLS have this). The MB fluid might even
be synthetic, for all we know - I haven't investigated that, but I
know it's a little spendy at $7-$8 per bottle wholesale.

Now, for the SLS fluid (which goes to a different section of the same
pump), you can NOT use ATF. That definitely requires special hydraulic
fluid. Not a lot of cars have SLS, though - wagons, and a handful of
later sedans, but that's about it. I guess it wasn't a very popular
 option for some reason.

The Mercedes PS and transmission fluids were researched a few years ago
by Dr Eric Chowanietz:

I researched the composition of the various MB fluids last December when
pondering what to refill my 190 manual transmission with (I didn't want to
pay the exhorbitant price MB were asking for their fluid). Castrol and
Elf
Lubricants Technical Depts. provided a lot of information.

 Here are the details again:

Basically MB fluid 236.2 is an old Type A Suffix A fluid. It is less
highly
friction modified that Dexron II/III and has a lower low-temperature
viscosity. This means the synchromesh 'bites' better than if Dexron were
used, especially when cold. If I were running a manual in a cold climate
then I'd be sure to use Type A fluid rather than Dexron. On the other
hand
Type A has a higher viscosity index than Dexron, meaning that it thins
more
quickly with increasing temperature than Dexron would. This can lead to
gear chatter at idle on a hot gearbox - not harmful but possibly
irritating.
Note that these fluids are all made to GM's spec. - it doesn't matter what
manufacturer supplies it; the friction-modifier additive packs all seem to
come from Lubrisol. In 1988 Ford introduced Mercon, their equivalent to
Dexron II. I note that the ATF that Motorcraft supply is badged both
'Mercon' and 'Dexron II' on the SAME bottle.
Synthetic ATF is made with synthetic base oil, rather than SAE 20 mineral
oil as is used for Mercon/Dexron. Provided that the synthetic oil is
friction modified to Dexron II or III spec. then I can't imagine why it
shouldn't be used on an MB. Synthetic ATF is likely to have a lower pour
point and better viscosity index that mineral ATF - ie its viscosity is
more
 stable wrt temperature.

The power steering fluid MB 236.3 is a slightly lowered viscosity version
of
Type A Suffix A - ie they start with a slightly thinner mineral oil and
then
friction modify it. I would think that the low-viscosity fluid is
required
because the steering system operates with a low fluid volume (0.6 litres)
and high flow rate. When the engine is at high rpm the fluid is really
moving quickly. Dexron is a fair bit thicker that the MB 236.3 fluid - in
very cold conditions with a high engine speed I imagine that there could
be
risk of cavitation in the pump if Dexron were used - maybe this is why MB
introduced their own fluid in '86?

In summary, if the car is not in a cold climate I'm sure Type A fluid
would
be quite satisfactory for the PS, most likely Dexron also. In terms of
'anti-wear' properties, Dexron is likely to be better than the MB fluid.
In
a cold climate I'd be certain to use the MB stuff to avoid possible
 viscosity-related problems.

 Regards,

 Eric

Re: [MBZ] computer question no mb

2006-01-03 Thread Nick Wellinghoff
Your board might be grounding out, power supply is bad or your BIOS is
corrupt (Or all of the above). Try taking the motherboard out of the case
and place it on a non conductive surface such as a wood board. Plug just
the power supply, CPU and memory in. Boot. If a go then go to another
computer and download and burn MemTestx86 to a bootable CD or floppy. Attach
either drive and boot, run the memtest for a few hours. If no errors then
you know you are good so far. Download your newest BIOS from your MB
website. Wipe out the existing CMOS according to the exact manual
instructions. Reinstall BIOS. Start plugging things in one at a time. Make
sure your HD has the correct jumper settings, also if you have another hard
disk plug it in the master IDE slot to test to see if the problem is
specific to your disk. If you get everything running well outside of the
case that means your board is for sure grounding out. Place plastic washers
in-between the metal screw mounts in the computer case and the board. Make
sure nothing on the board is touching anything metal on the case. GL. Report
back when done. A few tips. The power supply and RAM are the two components
of the PC where you want to drop the most money and get quality parts, as
they are the most volatile components. If you need to buy a new power
supply, get an Antec. If you need new RAM, run memtestx86 on it to make sure
it is indeed compatible with your board so you can return it. If you drop a
few extra bucks on these two components your computer will run very stable
regardless of OS.

Here's a question for those of you that know the intricate workings in
computers. I have a computer that has a ASUS A7V-VE motherboard and an
Athlon XP1800 + (AX1800DMT3C) CPU. It started having problems a while back
and I just set it aside. I had a few moments today to play with it, so I set
it up and turned it on. I think it has some motherboad problems because if I
plug an IDE cable into the master connector it either won't recognize the
drive is there, or will hang the system. I can take the same ribbon lead and
drive plugged into the slave IDE connector and it works fine. At the same
time the video seems to have some sort of intermittant connection as it
flickers and rolls intermittantly. Sometimes pressing or tapping various
places on the M/B seems to either correct the video or make it worse. My
question is...is this just caused by a bad M/B or can it be a problem with
the CPU? I can get a M/B from PC Liquidators that should work with the CPU
for about $30 but that M/B takes DDR memory instead of the PC100 that the
ASUS now uses, so I don't want to invest money in another M/B and memory to
re-use the CPU if the CPU is faulty. It appears to me from the info that I
have been able to dig up that the IDE functions are controlled by the
chipset, but I wanted to make sure. I appreciate any info that you folks
might have.

Re: [MBZ] transmission rebuilding

2005-12-07 Thread Nick Wellinghoff
Hi all,

My transmission just recently went out and I have purchased a new car
(needed something that doesn't burn out every few months.) but defiantly
want to put my old Benz back to running condition. I just love the way that
thing rides. Time is of no concern as I can spend a very long time
attempting to rebuild. This valve body stuff sounds a little advanced and
undocumented. In what circumstances does one need to rebuild the valve
body? First gear still works but I can't get it to go into 2nd. The fluid
went from red to black in about 1 week after this happened. And that is only
driving it three times to get it moved from the point of failure (at a
10m.p.h crawl)back to my house. What other publicly or cheaply accessible
documentation is available on how to do this sort of thing besides this
video?

Thanks,

YES. But of course, his video can ONLY illustrate one model. You need
the specific for YOUR transmission. His video can't illustrate the valve
 body variations of different transmission.

It CAN be done. Most of the people that rebuilt their own transmissions
managed to do it without MAJOR problems is they did it slowly and
carefully without making ANY mistakes or correcting mistakes before the
transmission was reassembled. This almost always was possible IF they
had someone experienced that they could ask questions of. 30-50 hours is
a common when DIYers rebuild a transmission, but there are a LOT of
pitfalls. Just one mistake and the transmission has to come out to
 repair THAT.

What bothers me is the answers I got from several shops: Pump is most

Two shops , MBH on Park 10 and Exclusive on Memorial definitely wanted $
2,800 for a rebuilt exchange unit.
My tranny shifts fine, no flaring or hard shifting. It was exposed to low
ATF levels at times. Is 150k to 200k the lifespan of a MB A/T ?

I've missed a chunk of this thread, so forgive me if I'm repeating anyone.

Depends on how it was maintained and used, how lucky you are, and
whether or not it was built in Oktober. Given steadfast maintenence and
lots of flat highway driving, the mechanical bits in a 722.303 should
have no problem going well beyond 200k miles. Conversely, Stu Ritter
says that 150k miles is pushing it in mountainous Denver. Seals, as
you've discovered, dry out like everything else made of rubber and may
not go the distance. A good indicator of wear is how long does it take
to engage reverse; generally 1-2 seconds is good, 3 or more is time to
start saving for a rebuild.

My 123 has 325k miles under its belt. I suspect the transmission has
been rebuilt (it had an early update B2 piston and is currently well
beyond MTBF), but it still has well over 150k miles on it. It is
perfectly behaved despite having been run low on fluid several times. I
don't anticipate selling it to Kaleb for a long time.

Anyway, you may or may not be at the end of life. Sadly, you won't
really know until you take it apart to see what's what. How badly is it
leaking? I would be tempted to do nothing yet and keep a close eye on
the fluid level.

Hope this helps at least a little,
Tom

scribe a line down the middle of each of the front tires and measure the
distance between the lines on the front of the tire and on the rear of the
tire, the difference being the toe in. The only thing tat I am concerned
about is that it would be possible to get the measurements correct between
the tires but yet have the toe set incorrectly by having the distance from
the centerline of the car different on the two sides of the car. For
example for discussion sake lets say the total toe in is to be 1/4 inch.
Assuming 1/8 inch toe on each side. It would be theoretically possible to
set the toe on one side as 0 and on the other side to 1/4 If I'm all wet

The AC in my car is completely dead this morning.I
changed the fuse to no avail. The push button control
was replaced about 2 months.
I suspect it's the blower because there's no air
movement at all.
The AC had been working fine before I lent the car to
a buddy. I'm sure it's just a coincidence, but I know
this guy, not accustomed to the Arizona climate,
always runs the AC on my car at high speed.
Any suggestion?
Thanks.

[MBZ] Car shaking at shutdown

2005-06-22 Thread Nick Wellinghoff

The collective wisdom,

Ok so last week I changed out my engine shocks, engine mounts and did a
valve clearance adjustment. To my amazement my car ran perfectly afterward.
No shaking etc. The most noticeable improvement was when I turned my car off
the whole car no longer shook back and forth on that final swing of the
engine. It was nice; I turn key, engine stops, no car shaking. Within two
days one of the engine shock mounts failed under the new pressure of working
engine shocks. I had to drive around a few days with the shock free
standing because I had to wait for the new shock mounts to come in. After
replacing the mounts now my engine has resumed the old final shake when I
turn it off. What the hell!? I was soo happy. My current theories are as
follows. The rubber on the old mounts was so soft and worn out (because they
were about to fail, which they did) that I was getting the illusion of a
soft stop. Or me driving it around for a few days with out shocks (because
of the failed mount) caused something else to go wrong. Any ideas? I want
my shake free stop back!!

Thank you for stating what is already known. Hence the name Engine stop
shocks. They do assist a little in preventing overall shaking during idle
btw. That still does not give me any ideas about why my final shake has
returned with new shocks, and new mounts.

Well FYI the only thing the shocks are for is to prevent that final

[MBZ] List information management

2005-06-21 Thread Nick Wellinghoff

Hello all,

I have a question about the lists information organization. This is an
extremely valuable resource and I am grateful to have found it. Many people
have spent a lot of time contributing etc. However, it is not easy to query
the list for past threads etc. (I am aware of the current search) As a
result a lot of repeat questions are always asked and answered, space is
wasted, not to mention it would be nice to be able to query with years of
responses to search from. I think formulating a system for organizing the
old data of the system is too large of a task but maybe introducing a new
system for submission of questions would be good. For example when a user
submits a new question we use a set of tags to categorize it and these tags
will carry along with the thread as users reply etc. Then we can
periodically pump the information into a relational database and be able to
query it efficiently. Not to mention backing up, optimization, etc and other
administration tasks could be improved. I would be game for helping devise
such a system with the help of SMEs to determine criteria for categories
etc. I hate to see all of this knowledge contributed by Marshall, Kaleb,
and etc go to the waste side by not being searchable. Enforcing the rules
for submission would be a breeze, no tags= no submission. Bad idea? Good
idea? Better ideas?

RE: [MBZ] Searchable database??

2005-06-21 Thread Nick Wellinghoff
Ahh the FBI is not that good at what they do, obviously. I think I have
sufficient programming skills to do a large part of it. I am not talking
about anything particularly fancy here. Just more metadata to make searching
an easier programming task.

Let's put it this way. If the FBI (just as one shining example) can't come
up with a decent computer system (with their budget), what makes you think
Kaleb can? Hmmm?

What the heck are we going to go crazy and blow a wad of cash on a car that
cost $125!?! I shop the pick and pull so I can have the green stuff for
coolant, and the black stuff for the engine. Change them every few visits,
and when I get a flat, heck the wheel and tire are $8. DO I care if the
silly rubber's not the same on all the wheels?
And do not even get me started on fuses! Get those by the handful from all
sorts of car. I think they charged me $1 for a few hundred. Keep a bag of
spares under the seat

So, the 1990 300D 2.5 arrived via shipping from New Orleans for my wife- I'm
sad to say that it has a few problems. I think they can be fixed at a
reasonable cost- can anyone tell me rough numbers?

1.Broken Windshield
2.Rear Muffler
3.Motor Mounts
4.Alignment (steering wheel upside down!)
5.Fuel leak on a small piece under hood, photo at
www.immersionstudio.com/images/fuel.jpg -- what is this piece??

Of course, the motor mounts make the thing sound like a Mack truck-
unbelieveable difference between my 1991which has 71k. It shakes like
crazy.

In the end, the sad thing is that my wife will probably not want to keep the
car and I'll need to sell it. She thinks it is just too rough for her.

Should I sell it as is or do the above repairs? I paid 6k plus shipping. My
1991 was 7500, a much better deal as it turns out! It needed nothing.
