Re: [MBZ] coil spring compressors

2023-11-05 Thread Ronald Courcy via Mercedes
Hi Jim, yes I have done that on a w123, the way you are describing.
The angle of removal and installation on the w124 does not lend it self to
doing the replacement. Pelican parts has a illustrated step by step for the
replacement. Short of removing the complete rear suspension it would be
advisable to use a spring compressor. Also less than a hour needed to replace
a spring using a spring compressor. There seems to be guite a few "knock off"
spring
Compressors on the market. Are any of them decent or are they junk? Ron

I'm not sure about W124, but I replaced the rear springs in a W123 using
nothing more than a floor jack, jack stands and the weight of the car.

Front springs is an entirely different proposition.

Does anyone have recomendations with regards to coil spring compressors?
I see prices ranging from $60 to in excess of a thousand dollars. At the
moment I want to replace rear coil springs on a w124 due to excessive camber
resulting from weak springs.
Any "brands" that should be avoided?
Are there any suitable ones available to rent at Advance,Autozone, O 'reiley?

Pretty optimistic for a W114, even with the miles.

If that had AC AZ Bob would be on it like a hobo on a hotdog as he says. Could

Just for grins I clicked on a link for ?MRCOOL DIY? mini-splits yesterday, and
after going to their website got directed to a number of different retailers,
one of which was Costco. I was just doing some research on a possible
mini-split for the Flagstaff garage, which I was thinking might be a 240V
12,000 BTU unit or thereabouts.

https://mrcooldiy.com

The Costco price (members only) was significantly lower than all the other
retailers who offered the same product (Amazon, Lowe?s). Costco wanted $1,450
for a 12k BTU 120V system, Amazon $1,738, and Lowe?s $1,738.

This brand looks pretty good and has a lot of positive reviews. They?re
designed specifically for DIY installation. I?m not quite ready to pull the
trigger on one, but good to know there is an option directed at DIY
installation that?s reasonably priced.

Since the extended performance is $26.XX and the Advanced Fuel Economy
is $24 the end cost is the same after the rebate.

Order 2 jugs of the extended performance for $26.XX each. Total is
about $52.XX plus tax. Choose curbside pickup at your local wallyworld.

Use code WOWFRESH which is $10 off of a $50 order. Not sure what all it
works on, but I was able to use it on two jugs of Mobil1. That gets the
price for 2 jugs to $42ish plus tax.

Then submit the two rebates, get $20 back.

Or, buy a $40 oil change bundle at AAP, get $15 back, get the $8 rebate
from Mobil, and the deal includes an oil filter (not Mann)

Suddenly today Nissan Frontier will not start. Starter turns very slowly or not
at all. Acting like low battery but jump start does not change anything. Also
headlights are bright, windows open normally, etc so that indicates battery is
good. I don't have a battery tester but battery is only a few years old.

It's a manual so tried to roll start it but didn't really have enough of a hill
to get much speed. It didn't work. Do you normally use 2nd or 3rd gear for that?

Of course it's not at home. Will try to start it tomorrow pulling with a tow
chain, and bring a voltmeter so i can at least see what battery voltage is.

Getting ready to get this stripped belt tensioner bolt fixed on the 99
606 of my fathers.? My current plan is to repair it with the cover in
place with a time sert.? These things are expense and the kit for this
is $258.? Of course that includes 5 inserts. I am planning on having the
possibly remove the radiator and condenser. Doing that the timing chain
is right behind the hole so would have to mark the depth on the drill
bit so I know how far I can go.

Pricing a new cover, its around $193 for a new cover from various MB
parts dealers online.? Should I attempt to repair the threads or just
bite the bullet and start pulling the front of the engine apart?? I
assume water pump, vacuum pump, pulley, alternator bracket, ps pump and
bracket, crank pulley?? What else would have to come off.? Is it
removable without pulling the head and oil pan?

This tiller looks to have been repowered by a Harbor Freight preditor engine

tiller is the way to go, much easier to operate than a front tine tiller. How
big a garden are you planing on? This would do the job for a small garden. My
concern would be the gear box construction. Does this tiller have a cast iron
gear box with real bearings or an alluminum or worst yet tin gear box with
bushings instead of bearings. An older(pre fmc) Troy Bilt horse would be a
better long term and large garden choice.

A caliper to fit the right rear 300td appears to not be that rare an item. If
you look at the link to the oem brake caliper at the bottom of the listing is a
list of all the vehicles it will fit. Which includes 84 and 85 300d,sd and cd,
as well as 86 and 87 300sdl.

I joined Kathy Kenels's MBCA list in the mid 90s, but it had little
content about W110s, and little expertise.? I Joined Alex Gabbard's
veteran's list in 95 or 96.?? Great people there. Tried the ritter
easley(hitler) list about the same time.?? Nothing there but 124/126
stuff, so I quit.?? When Alex gave up being listmom, I was about to
offer to, when Dickarde offered, and he already had equip and running
lists.? From dickarde's MBZ.org I was on Diesel and Veterans lists.??
The veterans morphed into 108 list, and was of no use to me. By then I
had the 81 240D since about 1994 or 5.??? The dickarde DIesel list and
the others all melted down when Dickarde's server melted down.??
Dickarde was too busy tok'in' weed to be bothered to get a server up and
running so the lists died for a couple months.? Kaleb scavenged the
dickarde list emails he had and invited us onto his new Mercedes list.??
Was there until I was booted for speaking truth. Okietalk is a great
place to be!

My 200D turned 56 in August.? I've had it 49 years.
Lost count of all the running and junker MBs I've owned.
I think I was up to 16 or so by 1979.

All Diesels other than the 2 380SLs #1 daughter insisted on, and the
E320 (124) I got from Kleb for her to drive in the winter.? Then there
was the 230TE and the 300TE.. and a junker 190c.?? So I guess I have had
6 vergassers.?? Happy when each one went down the road. (Except the
190c, it was only intended to be parts for 190Dc s and 200D.? I WAS
happy when I got the M120 engine from it sold!)

My _personal_ survival vehicle would be my trusty '97 Dodge 4wd diesel pickup.
100% mechanical if you lash up the P7100's fuel cutoff solenoid, and you can
push/tow-start it if need be. (Steep hill recommended!) But I am not a
prepper, in any real sense, so I don't have all that other stuff. With any
advance
notice, my first response would be, while civilization still held, to load up
valuables and supplies in said truck/camper, with trailer, and move family and
self to the old family farm. Then help the locals blow bridges and such, in
fine Lucifer's Hammer tradition. Trade my sentry, and engineering, services
such as they are for food, hope they'd let me stay. Alive.

I have had really good results using grout able vinyl tile over existing tile.
It is recommended that you use a texture filler
On the original tile so that the texture does not eventually mirror on the new
tile. Best to make sure the seams do not line up on the old and new tiles as
well.

An exterior chimney is no good if you're trying to burn wood while it's really
cold out. The draft is terrible until the chimney warms up and if it's really
cold sometimes its hard to keep the chimney warm.

Our new house up north has a chimney in the kitchen/diningroom which is
connected to an old cook stove that's all worn out, you can see the back wall
right through the firebox. The chimney is covered like Dimitri's but in really
nice shape so I'm going to uncover it and hopefully find a small cook stove as
a replacement. Same thing in the parlor/living room, its got what must have
been a nice stove in the '80s but looks really dated and out of place now. I'm
on the lookout for either a Jotul 602 or an antique parlor stove. The Jotul
looks right-ish and will be way more efficient...

Re: [MBZ] Lary T. Mini split

2021-07-22 Thread Ronald Courcy via Mercedes
Is your shop a free standing metal building with two inches of insulation?
Where are you located? 12 to 14k of cooling sounds inadequate and the heating
needs may not be met as well.
Most min split systems come with adequate refrigerant in the outside unit for a
25 foot run of tubing. There are high efficiency units available that can
provide heat when outside temperature is five to ten degrees below zero.
Installation is pretty simple. Run 220v power to outside unit. Low voltage
wiring between inside and outside units. install llneset tubing in-between the
inner band other units. Outside unit needs to sit on a slab on the ground or on
brackets attached to the building. You will need to rent or borrow a vacume
pump. After connecting the tubbing between the inner and outer unit you will
need to "pull a vacume" on the tubing inorder to create a negative pressure and
to verify that there is no leaks in the connections. Than you would open the
valves on the outside unit to allow the refrigerant to flow through the system.
Of course if you install yourself you will void the warranty. There are some
systems that are made to use precharged linesets so you do not have to use a
vacume pump. I HAVE WHOLESALE ACCESS TO SEVERAL DIFFERENT MANUFACTURES MINI
SPLIT SYSTEMS (FUJITSU, Mitsubishi,LG etc) AND WOULD BE WILLING TO HELP YOU
WITH YOUR selection/PURCHASE AND INSTALL. Ron Courcy

I was curious about it, since two people in my immediate household contracted
COVID in November. I never had any symptoms. Also been going to the gym 4x week
throughout the pandemic, very little mask-wearing there, never had any
symptoms. A few weeks ago I got an antibody test, which was negative.

What size tires are you using on your Ghia? It would be a good idea to verify
that they fit in your spare tire "well". I seem to remember that the stock
size is 560/15 but 600/15 were a popular oversize. Nowadays 155 versus 165.
Anyways the larger size did not fit in the spare tire well of the VW bugs I am
not sure about the Ghia's.

Some sort of special edition or special order or something?? Looks
original though, and kinda nice. Get the VIN and see what it says

Correct.? IIRC the orifice size for propane is smaller.? Not long after
we moved in I pulled one of them and somebody has welded them closed
then drilled them out to the smaller size.? I also ordered a kit to
convert it with new orifices and some sort of springs and things for the
valve or regulator on the unit. I have not installed them yet.

Yup, different orifices that will be smaller as propane has a higher BTU
content than natural gas. The springs are for the demand regulator, as they
will alter the pressure for operation on propane as well. Just unscrew the
cover, remove the old spring, pop in the new one, screw the cover back on.

I must admit, I spent a lot of time working on air cooled VW's. Staring in
highschool and progressing to owning a gas station for four years after
college. I tried to get one engine rebuilt a week in addition to the other
repairs. Lots of floors, rocker panels and ball joint front axle
reinforcements. I still have the engine line boring equipment as well as an
assortment of air cooled VW'S, mostly rusting away. My attention lately has
been to Mercedes vehicles. Ron Courcy

First car was a '71 super beetle. Rebuilt the engine, which was a
success. Attempted to repair rusted-out rocker panels, which was less so
but ended up servicable. Never really got the hang of adjusting the drum
brakes. Could get them working for a week or two but the pedal always
ended up going back to full travel and I'd have to pump the brakes to
stop. Replaced several wheel cylinders during my ownership, maybe I
never got all the air bled out. I was 17 and didn't really know what I
was doing -- Bentley mamual was my guide for everything.

Since we?ve been posting jokes recently?.

A crusty old biker out on a long summer ride in the country pulls up to a
tavern in the middle of no where, parks his bike and walks inside..

As he passes through the swinging doors, he sees a sign hanging over the bar:

COLD BEER: $2.00

HAMBURGER: $2.25

CHEESEBURGER: $2.50

CHICKEN SANDWICH : $3.50

HAND JOB: $50.00

Checking his wallet to be sure he has the necessary payment, the ole' biker
walks up to the bar and beckons to the exceptionally attractive female
bartender who is serving drinks to a couple of sun-wrinkled farmers.

She glides down behind the bar to the ole biker.

"Yes?" she inquires with a wide, knowing smile, "may I help you?"

The ole biker leans over the bar, "I was wondering young lady," he whispers,
"are you the one who gives the hand-jobs?"

She looks into his eyes with that wide smile and purrs "Why yes, yes, I sure
am".

The ole' biker leans closer and into her left ear whispers softly, "Well, wash
your hands real good, cause I want a cheeseburger.

I have been driving the $675ML500 (well, $700 now that I spent $25 on a
new ignition switch) a bit the last few days and I concur.? It is bouncy
and twitchy on bumpy roads (like my driveway), very stiff suspension,
tall, short wheelbase.? On smooth roads it is not bad but as soon as it
hits a bump in the road or a dip or hole of some sort, it bounces all
over again.? I find it somewhat tiring to drive just from the fairly
short trips I have taken.? I recall the former wife's 164 being softer
and less harsh in the steering and suspension, so it was fairly
comfortable on longer drives.

I went on a little ramble on Sunday, went down a dirt road to visit some
friends, we had big rains Saturday evening so there were some large
fairly deep pits filled with water, the sand gets soft but not really
muddy, I was quite impressed with how it went right through those spots,
I could feel the 4m pulling it along but there was no torque steering or
anything like that as I have noticed on my 4WD trucks and the old Jeep
Cherokee I had -- a lot more "agricultural" feel to the systems.? Seems
a pretty refined system.

The 4m on the 211 E320 wagon is fairly not noticeable although I have
driven it a bit through a wet field (grass) and I could feel it pulling
right along on the wet grass, so that was gratifying. The 210 might have
gotten mired up in that.

Strong work. Hella deal. Looks really nice.

I don?t know how this compares to the 400E, power, torque etc. comparable?

Slightly better. 4.2 liters of displacement versus 4.0. Facelift model, (94-95)
so the last and best of the design and enhancements to the W124 chassis.

Just loaded on the truck about 30 minutes ago. Should be here on Sunday or
Monday.

I went to geezer hour at the grocery on Monday morning 6A-7A.? It was
mobbed with geezers driving their carts like they drive their cars in
the parking lot.? Some of those people were rather vicious and of course
they tend to wander and leave their carts crosswise of the aisles and
are oblivious to anyone else around.? Then after going through all the
checkout they stand there and oops realize, oh I actually gotta pay for
this, then root around for a wallet and debit card or whatever and that
takes another 5min.? I got a few things and decided not to deal with
that madness again.

Popped in yesterday afternoon, there was hardly anyone there. Only good
steaks, not much other beef.? Some chicken etc.? Plenty of eggyweggs.?
Other staples in short supply but I am fairly well-stocked in that regard.

Get off my damn lawn!!!

Ac or ac & heat? Most manufacturers make multiple efficiency levels of their

Very happy with the performance.

Use a bright light, find the two screws inside the console box, one each
side, I think toward the front of the box. Get that console box out of the
way and you'll find the screw to remove so you can get the center console
wood piece out.

Thank you, Max, for the reply. It turns out I did just what you said and
came back to the computer to post I had found the solution and saw your
email.

The two screws are at the extreme front end of the console box on the
outside corners underneath fuzz, hair, and other cruft so they were
hidden. Once that was out of the way, yes, the screw to remove was
visible and now the ashtray is out.

I put the radio removal tools I got from Floyd's link on Amazon and am
now trying to pull the radio out so I can disconnect the electrical plugs.

The radio, however, does not want to cooperate.

Do I just pull harder?

I understand the mindset, but I don?t think it?s endemic.

My youngest is putting out resumes and applying for jobs daily now that he?s
graduated. The worst part of all this is that the current industry climate in
the environmental business, no matter where you are, is to circle the wagons
and hunker down. He?s applying for really crappy public works jobs that will
give him some broader experience to try and improve his potential for getting a
?real? job. I have been using what favors I have to try and get him into the
County so he might be able to get a start in the environmental business with
them. In the meantime he works at a local golf course where rich white guys
shove cash at him for taking care of their golf carts.

This is a real conundrum for him - it?s not uncommon for him to come home with

[MBZ] RE Time-Sert thread repair inserts

2016-03-03 Thread Ronald Courcy via Mercedes
Hello all , I can personally attest to Time-Sert inserts efficacy and superior
quality. I have used them for more than 30 years beginning when I ran an
import repair business and was looking for an alternative to KD solid spark
plug repair inserts which were notorious for backing out when spark plugs were
later removed for replacement. (VW air cooled engines) . I also used them
routinely to repair stripped VW head stud threads in the block as well stripped
Magpilotjet threads on Solex carburetors. Time -sert inserts lock in place when
they are installed they do not back out. Time-sert inserts require a smaller
oversize hole due to the way they are made, the peaks and valleys of their
internal and external threads are "timed" synchronised so that the internal and
external threads align and thus a smaller outside diameter is required as
compared to other thread repair systems. Time-Sert thread repair has been
selected for OEM to dealer supplied engine thread repair kits for mos
t american cars for at least the last 10 years. The only "Big-Sert" I am
aware of were made to repair those same spark plugs threads. The only real
drawback with the Time-Serts is the initial investment in the repair kits.
Time-serts repair kits are typically at least six times the cost of a similar
Helicoil repair kit. However the cost of the inserts themselves are quite
competitive with other systems. If anyone on the list wants to borrow a
Time-sert kit I have quite a few different ones that I am willing to loan out.
 Thanks Ron Courcy

[MBZ] 300sdl over heating

2015-12-11 Thread Ronald Courcy via Mercedes
I had driven close to 1000 miles on the trip, mostly at about 65 mph, before
overheating became an issue. At that time I could not get heat from the
heater or defroster ( low coolant level). Not the easiest car to purge the air
out of the cooling system. When it was at worst the car quickly heated up if
driven at low speeds or if forward motion was delayed by traffic or a traffic
light. Drove last 150 miles of the trip to Florida at 50 mph as temp would
approach 120 c if driven slower or faster. Used the car today for a short
errand ( 9 miles one direction) ran defroster to maximize cooling, car did
not overheat even in traffic, stayed about 90 degree c . On return trip I did
not run the defroster, no over heating. Both drives no more than 55 mph. Even
heating of radiator at conclusion of drive. I don't think there is a blockage
as the radiator heats up evenly when the car is not overheating. Ron Courcy

[MBZ] 300sdl overheating

2015-12-11 Thread Ronald Courcy via Mercedes
My 1987 MB 300sdl just started overheating on a road trip to Florida from Rhode
Island.I do not appear to be getting proper water circulation. Engine gets very
hot even though the water in the expansion tank is still cold. If I feel along
the radiator it is a little warm at the top but cold everywhere else. I have
already had the thermostat replaced which did not make much difference except
that the normal operating temperature is slightly higher. I tried to bind up
the fan clutch so that it drives constantly that appeared to work for a short
while until the wire ties I used to bind it up failed. I am thinking of
replacing the fan clutch. Is there much of a possibility that the water pump
itself is worn out? Its not leaking. When the car gets hot the radiator
hoses gets rock hard and their does not appear to be any circulation through
the radiator. That is when the top of the radiator is warm and all else cold.
There is no immediate production of pressure upon a cold start
up, bubbling into the expansion tank/reservoir. The car starts easily and does
not sound like an overheated motor even when the temp gauge indicates it is
very warm. Any ideas? Ron Courcy

[MBZ] limited slip rear end for w126 cars

2015-02-27 Thread Ronald Courcy via Mercedes
Hello Does anyone on the list have access to which w126 cars may have come
with limited slip rear ends (posi).

I have the idea that some of the big body gas cars may have been equiped with
a limited slip rear end. Which ones would have a similar gear ratio to what
the sdl came with? How to identify the limited slip rear end? Thanks Ron
Courcy
