Re: [MBZ] Tire changing sucks

This certainly isn't an option for most, but if you have access to a
military auto hobby shop, they invariably have a tire machine. Once I
learned how to use it, took about a half hour for all four. I started doing
it because my metal valves got thrown out one time too many.

Re: [MBZ] 1983 300D Fuse and AC Issues

2006-04-24 Thread Tjohn
Ok, pressures are all relative, you really need to know low and high side
pressures to get a full picture of what's happening. Also need to have an
idea of the ambient temperature. The temperature/pressure chart at
www.aircondition.com can help there. Also, it sounds like you perhaps do
not have a set of manifold gauges? Mandatory for A/C work, Harbor Freight
sells a set for $50 or a bit less on sale.

An easy way to cheat is to monitor your center vent temperature. I like to
watch the temperature as I add refrigerant, and of course quit when the
temperature stops going down. You want to watch that especially with R134,
because I thought that 2.2 pounds was the weight for R12. R134 should be
around 25% less...

Re: [MBZ] Oil Cooler Lines

2006-03-05 Thread Tjohn
Mine seeped a bit, then began to leak in earnest before I replaced them.
They pretty quickly got to a point where a 30 min highway drive would
produce a spectacular spray of black oil on the drivers side of the car. I
removed the mounts to do the job, and even then it was unpleasant. I didn't
have any problem unscrewing the lines, but I understand I may have been
lucky in this regard. Not a bad time to replace a leaky oil filter housing
gasket while youre in there.

Re: [MBZ] 126

2005-12-28 Thread Tjohn
126's are wonderful cars. Make sure that you check the trunk for rust, both
in the wheel well, and underneath the package shelf (you may have to lie on
your back in the trunk to see it). I believe that as others have stated the
380 engine is a bit underpowered, although the double chain versions are
perfectly reliable. I actually prefer the diesel, since its low end grunt
makes it accelerate acceptably for around town driving. You'll find that
the 560 returns mileage only a couple mpg less, and with a large plus up in
the hp department - and you could put all the hydraulic suspension knowledge
to use. You'll soon see why Kaleb swapped in the 500 engine in his.

Replace the window seals to make sure the silly thing is water tight. Look
down below carpet and carpet pad behind the seats to make sure no rust - it
loves to form there. Leaks in the trunk usually are tail light gasket.
Subframe was defective resulting in cracking, MB was still honoring recall
last time I looked (two years ago). And a big second on the D-Jet thing.
That electronic FI was always problematic, MB went to K-Jet mechanical
injection within a couple or three years. Good thing is yours should have
avoided all that pesky emissions stuff, and actually develop a couple
hundred horsepower or so.

Oh, and watch timing chain like a hawk on these babys. For all that, a 107
even in mediocre condition draws constant comments, in a way that my much
nicer 126 never has.
