Re: [MBZ] Dead/dying battery
Tim, Before blaming tha battery, try this - with the engine off! Reach down grab the alternator pulley twist to see if it will slip in the belt. It should not slip no matter how much pressure you apply and if it does the belt is too loose. Tom www.kegkits.com Quoting Tim C. bb...@crone.us: It seems the battery in my W115 is going: it failed to start at lunch on the battery alone, but when I put my 450A boost box it cranked right up. Probably not coincidentally, my clock has been losing substantial time while parked, and keeps fine while driving, so I'm suspecting the battery rather than the alternator. The battery in the car is a 1000CCA, class 49-1. Big big battery. Dated 7/05 but I don't know its maintenance history, it is obvious the car sat for some time before I got it. 1) I have the parallel glow plugs, so is it safe to go down to the W123 850CCA in a new battery? 2) I have several ~450CCA batteries from my Volvo days on a slow-charge in the basement, at last test they were good. Assuming I do a reasonable wiring job would it be safe to use two or even three in parallel? Primarly concerned about the circuits in the car if one of the batteries goes low, not so much about the shortened lifespan of the batteries. 3) What are the chances it's a weak alternator or stuck light switch versus battery? I should be able to tell with my voltmeter/ammeter, right? 4) Is there any way to refurb the battery, or better to just trade it in? Re: [MBZ] Synthetic Oils
Oil analysis is not just about your oil. It also uncovered leaky head gaskets, unfiltered air intake and accelerated engine wear. For example, an oil analysis can tell you that you have abnormal cam lobe wear by the type amount of metals found in the oil. This may lead you to discover (in a 1972 4.5 liter gas engine, BTW) that the plastic spray bar keepers have worn out and most of the oil destined for the cam lobes is actually going elsewhere. Or you may find higher than normal silica in the oil, which would indicate unfiltered air entering the engine and might lead to the realization that the new KN filter you installed wasn't such a good idea afterall. Tom www.kegkits.com Quoting Curt Raymond [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I'm of the mind that extended oil changes are something you work up to. How do I know 20,000 is safe if I don't try 19k first and so on? Re: [MBZ] OT Jeep!
It's just begun Tom www.keglits.com Quoting R A Bennell [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Off topic but I thought you all might find this interesting. Last Monday, a client stopped into the office in the late afternoon. He is a car guy but not into MB. He has a nice 67 or 68 Mustang fastback that he drives and an old Comet convertible stored and waiting for rebuilding. One of the things he asked was whether I wanted another project. He had, in his recent travels, run into someone with a 1973 Jeep Commando (like a Jeepster) that appeared intact, if a bit rusty, that he wanted to be rid of for the princely sum of $100. I cannot say that I wanted it but my younger son is 18 and enamoured of 4X4's in general and often critisized by me for getting our old 4Runner or the short F150 real dirty in the mud. I went home and asked my wife if I should even mention it to him or if I should keep my mouth shut. (See how smart I am?). In any event she agreed it might be OK for him and we went to look at it that evening. It was indeed a $100 vehicle but I bought it for him anyway as he liked it. I debated towing it home from Wilkes to Fort Richmond - maybe 5 miles but was concerned about the quality of the brakes and the bumper on my truck and the possibility that the authorities might not approve. I paid $70 to have it towed by a genuine tow truck the next evening. It was full of parts. Unfortunately, all of the parts were for an 80's Buick and went into the dumpster at my office the next morning. The Jeep had not been licenced in 10 years and lord knows how long since it had even been started and run. We were told it had a replacement engine but then the clutch linkage broke and it was parked. It had a hole in the gas tank and a broken clutch linkage so we did not try to start it. Tom washed off the engine and, at my suggestion, pulled the plugs and poured a bit of oil in and then cranked the motor over with a wrench. He got a filter and I gave him oil so he changed the oil. I got him a fuel tank repair kit on Friday afternoon. I went away to the lake for this past weekend. On Saturday, he and a friend not only had it running, but the clutch linkage repaired and were driving it around the back lane and out onto the field next door. I was impressed. I never would have got the clutch fixed that fast. I would have gone looking for a used part. He and the friend didn't. They picked up a swivel end at a farm supply place and welded it on. So it will not yet pass a safety examination to be licenced, but for about $200 it runs and moves on its own. Not a bad investment so far. Re: [MBZ] surprising experience at autozone
Gary, I had a girlfriend one who was a better mechanic than I was I consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to cars. She got so tired of being treated like a stupid broad at places like tire shops that she'd have her boyfriend (me at the time) act as a front man while she stood back quitely, listening to the mechanic. Tom www.kegkits.com Quoting Gary Hurst [EMAIL PROTECTED]: i've been having a terrible time lately with customer service. we changed our merchant bank recently and i've had nothing but trouble with them since. spent another 2 hours on the phone with them today. nobody there cares one bit. the employees are not only indifferent, but stupid, rude, mendacious and incompetent. needless to say, i was in a pretty foul mood when the phone rang and it was the ex-wife with some sort of car issue. she is at the mechanic with her 92 300E being told that her windshield wiper transmission is damaged and extensive and expensive repairs are needed. i ask her what the symptoms are and she tells me that the wiper blade smashed into the window pillar and keeps repeating until it flies off. I think for a moment and say look, you're short anyway. just put a really short wiper blade on it and call it fixed. this all seems conceptually beyond her, so i tell her to meet me at the local autozone (where i've never been before) and we will just figure it out there . we walk in and there is a young woman behind the counter (and let's face that fact that a young woman behind the counter does not inspire confidence at achieving any sort of solution at an autozone type of place). being in a bad mood, i start by asking whether she knows anything about cars at all or whether she is just there because they needed to hire a woman and i ought to go elsewhere. she then calmly explained that she had some minimal knowledge of automotive systems and i was welcome to present her with my situation and see if she can be of any help. within 3 minutes, we were all outside with a dozen wiper blades looking for hte perfect size and withing another 5 minutes we had our solution. she snapped on the new blade and we were fixed for $11. i was very impressed, so i asked her about the battery on my saturn as it sounds kinda funny now when it cranks. 2 minutes later, she is out with the battery tester telling me i have a dead cell. so i tell her to just give me whatever battery she thinks will do the job, and she tells me that she should put it in for me because i shouldn't be driving around with a battery that could fail me at any moment. i try to explain how i can't have her put in a battery for me as i have a street rep to preserve, but she says she does it all day long at it is really no big deal. and this is where it gets really charming. she pretends to be unable to break open the fastener holding down the battery and asks if i might be so good as to help her get it done. now that is downright brilliant! all my problems are fixed in a half hour for under 70 bucks. how different this is from all my recent experiences with customer service? ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com Thanks, Tom Hargrave 256-656-1924 ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Bilstein vs Monroe shocks on a 80 SD
Shocks aren't really shocks. They are motion dampers that absorb the up down motion of the car body they convert 100% of the motion they dampen into heat. Just drive your car a few miles then pull over carefully touch one of your shocks. All shocks that I know of are dampened in both directions but the cheap shocks have smaller tubes, cheaper seals and cheaper valving. All of this adds up to a shock that will not dampen as well, will run hotter will wear out faster. Re: [MBZ] Fuel leaks, was Duraterm Chromium plugs for OM603
The most common cause for this is a cracked bleed line. Tom Hargrave www.kegkits.com Quoting OK Don [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I seem to be collecting fuel at the base of the #2 injector on the '87 603 engine, but I can't tell where it's coming from. It's not obvious. There is also a light coating of fuel on top of the injection pump. I hung 4X5 inch film between the IP and the fuel filter, and another peice between the IP and the block to try to see if the fuel was coming from one place and spraying around, but didn't detect any. Any ideas? It does beg the question what is the plastic collar for? Not sure except to distinguish between vertical and inclined injectors! There may be another reason, but I don't know what it is. May be to prevent/minimize the accumulation of any wetness (fuel or water) at the base of the injector(s). Re: [MBZ] Bilstein vs Monroe shocks on a 80 SD
It's true - my Mercedes takes speed bumps and RR tracks better at 45 MPH than at 25 MPH. Tom Hargrave 256-656-1924 Quoting OK Don [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I've been told, but have never tried to verify, that a Mercedes has more suspension travel than most cars, and is designed to use that range of travel. That's why you can drive your Merecedes over railroad tracks and speed bumps at speeds that would throw the passengers of a Japanese car through the roof, and not be bothered by them. This range of travel is not accounted for in the cheaper shocks. On 10/18/05, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Shocks aren't really shocks. All of this adds up to a shock that will not dampen as well, will run hotter will wear out faster. who's apartment is heated on the landlord's dime?? No, who's heating bill is included in the rent! Tom Hargrave www.kegkits.com Quoting Curt Raymond [EMAIL PROTECTED]: More efficient ways? Like just having it not cold here? The ads for natural gas/propane and oil heat companies fight over which is more efficient. At this point I'm thinking propane is slightly ahead as the best choice, the cost of natural gas is up something like 200%. -Curt who's apartment is heated on the landlord's dime. Andrew, You are correct - its the same type of coverage as Iraq. And I know better. My youngest Son was on the ground there and he constantly told us about the good that was being done in that country. Tom Hargrave www.kegkits.com Quoting andrew strasfogel [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Then by your logic, since the media focusses on the pain, death, destruciton, and suffering more than focussing on the overwhelming number of survivors, then this proves that the crisis is a creation of the liberal media out to get Bush! Re: [MBZ] New Orleans looting
John, This isn't the President's fault - he actually delared the area a disaster area before the storm hit so that federal funds would flow that much faster. It's also not the local politicians fault - they spend funds, including funds for levee improvement based on the State's wishes budget restrictions. And from what I understand, there were levee improvement projects on the books. But improving levees is like improving the road systems - some of these projects take decades because of the logistics involved. It's not like you can tear them down start over. The situation is a little more complicated. The inner city in most of our large cities are is full of the poorest of our people and new Orleans is no exception. Many did not have the physical or financial means to evacuate before the storm. Remember, the population was told to evacuate, to somewhere. Where were they to go and more important, how were they supposed to pay to get there? Now, here they sit in their houses, surrounded by water and all they have left. They survived the storm and now we want them to leave it all behind to the looters? No way, at least not until they are starving. I predict that many residents will stay in New Orleans until thay have absolutely no choice. The National Guard will still be pulling the dead and dying out of their houses two weeks from now for no other reason than they refused to leave. That's not New Orleans, Louisiana, the Federal Government or the President's fault! Tom Hargrave www.kegkits.com Quoting John Robbins [EMAIL PROTECTED]: With the sea of school buses that were left unused for the mandatory evacuation, the leaders in Louisiana dropped the ball. Now all the buses are half submerged and probably inoperable. The local leaders are the ones who should take the heat, not Bush or anyone else in Washington. Bingo. Also, who has 500k people surrounded by levees without a PLAN on how to fix a damaged one ___ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net
