I pour it on the back and push it around with a stick. Don't let any
drip through holes in the board, or drip around the outside. You don't
want ANY of it on the components themselves. It could ruin them, and
will certainly deface them so you can't tell what they are supposed to be.

Once it's had time to work, crinkling up the varnish, you

> rinse with water and a bit of dish soap and then with just water?

wash it off, scrub with a brush and rinse thoroughly, then blow-dry
with compressed air.

Now you're ready to solder.

Yesterday I finally got around to putting a water pump on the 79 300CD.
It has sat for quite some time but I got in and glowed and it lit off on
about half a rev.  Gotta love old dizzels.  But the water pump was
seized up so the belt was smoking by the time I got it moved a little bit.

I have done this job a coupla times before so knew how to do it, figured
it would be a 30min job.  But of course one of the fan bolts was stuck
so that took about 45min to finally break loose without rounding off the
head.  Got the new pump on fine then the fan then went to put the belt
on, oh there's the pulley over there...  DUH!!!  So took it apart again
and got that done.

I think I am going to get this one on the road and have some fun with
it.  Max and Curley and I put new break calibers and pats on it a coupla
years ago, it needs a trans filter and fluid change which I will do
soon.  The tires are probably 25yo but hold air so will need new rubbers
if I drive it more than a bit around the block (which I don't have but
you know what I mean).  Should do all new cooling system hoses too.

Re: [MBZ] '79 300CD - speaking of slow

2010-03-26 Thread R A Bennell

I saw a clip on the net last night relating to that British car show with
Jeremy what's his name.

They were talking about cool cars and he was test driving an early XKE Jag and
an Aston Martin DB5 and commenting
on the claims of the makers back when they were new. The Jag, it was claimed
would top 150 mph and the DB5 was
supposedly over 300 HP. They are on a track of some sort and he is running
around squealing tires a bit etc. Then a
new Honda Accord pulls up along side and he advises they are going to compare
it with the cool cars and that the
Honda is a 2.4 - so the 4 cylinder version. They all take off and the Honda
runs away from the Jag and the Aston
Martin.

He says, how can that be and then he says THEY LIED. The Jag won't do 150
mph and there is no way that the AM
has that much HP. It was cute.

Then he gets into the fact that there are companies that are re-doing these
cars so that they will perform the way
that the makers claimed they would.

So, be warned - don't necessarily think your Honda can blow off a Jag.

Heh. When I lived in Chicago, morning expressway traffic averaged about 15 mph.

Somewhere I've got my dad's issue of Mechanix Illustrated with Tom McCahill's
test of the new fuel injected 1963 Corvette Stingrays. IIRC, he got 160+ mph in
the coupe and around 150 in the ragtop. That would make the 1963 327 roadster
equal to a 1984 350 coupe. I don't think so.

Still a nice car, as long as you only have one passenger.

I had an 85 300CD that was a beautiful car, but I had kids back then, and it
was a royal PITA to haul them around in it.

I'm driving 240D currently.
At least with this, I would have an additional cylinder, and 2 fewer doors.

True.  I wasn't thinking about it from that point of reference.

I thought a 88hp 300cd would blow the doors off a 240d.

Neither do I - so I find 240D plenty adequate.
And the 2-lane roads I travel in the 'burbs are just fine. If they
want to pass me - make my day. The idiots all try to pass me where
the road has double solid lines like they are all foreigners. Wait,
maybe they are all foreigners?
