Online. And what gets me is when I go to bid on my car, I’m bidding then was
the winner, somebody outbid me. I let it get about half way thru the countdown
before it closes and usually put my bid in at about the 3/4 mark. Somewhere
after half and 3/4 it was declared sold on approval. In other words, it appears
they ended bidding too early.

Series II would definitely have had Lucas electric. No one would accuse them of
being reliable. Easily repaired maybe...

Actually that makes me think of an interesting question, of course we'd all
want to have a very reliable vehicle that was easily maintained and repaired
but what if you could only have one, what if the choice was:Very reliable but
difficult/expensive to repairornot terribly reliable but easy/inexpensive to
repair
?

There is a reason they are so inexpensive. They are ticking bombs loaded with

I looked at Santa Fes when I was shopping for my Focus wagon. They seemed like
good, solid vehicles and appeared to be relatively trouble free.

What is Mom hauling that she needs such a beast, anyway?

And the indie I referenced does all sorts of foreign cars, not just Rovers.
He'd starve to death if he just did Rovers, for sure,. Aren't that many in the
immediate area. Lots of them in Sarasota and South Tampa ().

Re: [MBZ] Land rover thoughts?

2013-12-25 Thread dseretakis
Well, I went to prep school in Fairfield County, CT - not my choice and I've
never driven anything but a MB or BMW. To claim that I don't have any yuppie in
me despite my very ethic name would be rather hypocritical. So I'm OK with the
yuppie rover. I'm not ok with it's potential reliability issues.

LR dealerships and mechanics are not a scarcity in the Northeast.

In my opinion all the MB SUVs up until the mid 2000's are garbage. The G-wagen
is clearly an exception.

I don't have any problems with the domestic stuff and will certainly consider
it.

I would rather break down in a LR 10x per year than drive an Asian vehicle.

We've talked about one to replace the Ranger, we don't really need a pickup

Why not just get a domestic exploder/clone or a santafe or whatever? At
least those you can get parts for.

No. the issues were mostly minor and cosmetic, and have likely already been
fixed by now. I had a 2001, that I sold the Kaleb when I dumped all the old
cars last year. It was fine.

I had an old 1973 series III. Was a cool vehicle. Aluminum body doesn't
rust but frames did on older ones. I also had a GMC Jimmy but LR was
better esp off road in snow. YMMV

Only in the USA. RangeRover is a high-end product all over, but
the Discovery is thought classy only here - I guess like
Mercedes. Elsewhere, it is on the short list with Toyota Land
Cruiser as the get-you-there transportation choice.

No parts availability problem for LRs newer than '85 or so (around the time
of the first generation Range Rover that was imported to the US, the really
boxy ones with the amazing approach angles). Portland has quite a big LR
fan club, at least judging by the number of LR-only indies (three that I've
seen, as opposed to five MB-only shops).

That being said, my impression is that they are pretty darn unreliable,
with the notable exception of the ones built when BMW briefly owned the
company.

My question would be, why have a Gelaendewagen if you aren't going to drive
it in the winter? Yeah, I know, salt. It still seems like a waste.

They are not bad. But clearly not a Mercedes! Don't expect that
level of engineering or build.

I'm most familiar with the earlier ones - up through Series III.
Those are sturdy, rugged, simple, and capable. The Disco is
decent, as I understand. I'd be leery of the complex systems on
some of the Range Rovers.

Is 4WD and off-road capability a requirement?
