Here's one that got my attention, when I heard his North Carolina victory

was Barack Jr. proclaiming his allegiance to Kenya's flag? Barack Sr. was

I'm sure he didn't get a USA military funeral. And I don't think Jr. was
talking about his stepfather, who lived and died in Indonesia.

I don't recall the word honorable ever being used to describe Bush's
tenure in the National Guard. He clearly used his family connections as a
means to avoid the draft and a combat stint in 'Nam. It would have been
nice to hear him admit this instead of accepting the BS that his handlers
came up with. I actually have no problem with Bush' avoiding service, but I
took extreme exception to the blatant hypocrisy of the Bush campaign
supporters who scorched John Kerry for his military record. Kerry was a man
who, after all, actually DID serve in 'Nam, was wounded, and received a
medal for his actions.

Not only are you wrong, but you have been wrong for quite some time. This is an
old issue. The Supreme Court took up this exact question and determined that
the draft does not violate the 13th Amendment.

Before the United States entered the first World War, the Court had anticipated
the objection that compulsory military service would violate the Thirteenth
Amendment and had answered it in the following words: ''It introduced no novel
doctrine with respect of services always treated as exceptional, and certainly
was not intended to interdict enforcement of those duties which individuals owe
to the State, such as services in the army, militia, on the jury, etc. The
great purpose in view was liberty under the protection of effective government,
not the destruction of the latter by depriving it of essential powers.''
Accordingly, in the Selective Draft Law Cases, it dismissed the objection under
that amendment as a contention that was ''refuted by its mere statement.

In addition, The Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of the draft.

The Supreme Court's opinions leave no doubt of the constitutional validity of
the act. In United States v. O'Brien, upholding a statute prohibiting the
destruction of selective service registrants' certificate of registration, the
Court, speaking through Chief Justice Warren, thought ''[t]he power of Congress
to classify and conscript manpower for military service is 'beyond
question.'''http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/data/constitution/article01/41.html#f1449#f1449
In noting Congress' ''broad constitutional power'' to raise and regulate
armies and navies, the Court has specifically observed that the conscription
act was passed ''pursuant to'' the grant of authority to Congress in clauses
12-14.

Oh, I thought Rich was asking about JFK (JohnForbesKerry, not
JohnFitzgeraldKennedy). Seems like after Kerry came stateside,
he got some political ideas, and asked the Admiral he was working
for to discharge him, as he conscientiously objected to the war and
wanted to devote himself full time to his agitprop activities with
VVAW (www.vvaw.org) and run for Congress. Can't let military service
get in the way of political ambition, now, can we?

It seems he requested the Swift Boat assignment himself. I've seen
three explanations floating about for that. 1: He wanted to be like
the other JFK. 2: He'd rather be the commander of a small boat than
just another officer on a larger vessel, or 3: It was perceived to
be relatively safe duty.

The Supreme Court's opinions leave no doubt of the constitutional validity
 of the act.

The issuance of a SCOTUS opinion does not automatically remove all doubt on
this or any other topic. How many times has the Supreme Court overturned
itself? Just think of all the wrongheaded racial decisions which were
overturned by Brown v Board of Education, which in turn was also incredibly
wrongheaded.

The opinion you cite has a good bit of circular logic. Let us assume the
draft is necessary. Then, based on that assumption, let us assert that
since it's needed it must be Constitutional. And then for good measure,
let us hold this Amendment subservient to the prior terms of the
document which it modifies.

I'd rather rely upon the plain language of the 13A text, which prohibits
involuntary servitude, and makes no exceptions for 'good' involuntary
servitude. It's clear, unambiguous, and anyone can read it for himself.

On the moral question upon which the SCOTUS bases their unconstitutional
ruling: Prohibiting the draft would not have materially hampered our
ability to execute military operations in WWI and WWII. The People were
supportive of those wars, and for the most part, were willing to do their
part. In the two conscripted unwars that followed, the popular support was
not there, and for good reason. You can't force Patriotic Duty.

Too bad that the letter was put out as it was not what it pretended to be.
Interesting that in an interview his commander said that while he had not
written that one, it was certainly what he would have said had he written
the letter. Somehow the message got a lot less press than did the
messenger. I will concede a strategy win to the folks who made a combat
wounded vet look less patriotic that a NG pilot whose commander did have
those words to say about him.
But I am one of those who was happier with the semi-ban on political
comments on this list.

I think that was totally unfair. Hire a newsreader. Give him falsehoods

2008-04-03 Thread Tom Hargrave
There is a lot of misleading press out there about all of the candidates and
it's only going to get worse.

Understand that I'm a Republican but:

I still know that the press about Obama disrespecting our flag is BS. There
is one photo circulating that shows him turned away from the American flag
during a pledge. All I can say is that you can do a lot with a camera and
angles and timing.

The same goes for the rumor that he's Muslim - he is not. Also, the most
recent flaming attack is where he's tied to statements made by his
(Christian, not Muslim) minister. Just because his minister is way out in
left field does not mean that he is.

In other words, I believe Obama to be a decent, respectable man. I just
can't vote for him. Our political and economic views are too different.

I think he's a man who will do anything to win. (AKA a politician)
I also disagree with his political views, as I do with the views of
Willie's Marxist wife. I do think it's ridiculous for so many Osama
supporters to point fingers at Hitlery and claim that she's engaging
in dirty politics, when his entire career has been dirty politics.
For crying out loud, Mr Honorable got his state Senate seat by
having all his opponents tossed off a ballot. (Democratic primary,
in a purely Democratic district, 1996)
After that, his achievements have consisted of delivering speeches well. If
that's a qualification for the Presidency, we may as well pick an actor at
random and put him/her in the white house. How about somebody with a really
awesome speaking voice, like James Earl Jones? (actually, I'd vote for Jones
before I'd vote for Osama, Hitlery, or McLame)

Re: [MBZ] O/T Politics: Obama

I agree!

I don't tell my Black friends either.

Or my white friends.

Neither my Gay friends.

Family would be digusted.

Church group offended

As a matter of fact, I try not to think of it myself

I don't mean to chastise anyone, that's just the way it is here.
Nothing wrong with it. I don't talk about gay rights at my nephew's
boy scout meetings (he has 2 mommies), and I don't talk about my
belief in the right to bear arm's on the Oberlin forum. That's life.

I seem to recall some talk of immigrants, and what vehicles

We have black people here, we do not have a problem with them.
