There is a movie starring Robert Redford, he is on a boat in the middle
of the ocean and the movie starts with him waking up in the morning
after his boat hit a lost cargo container and tears a hole in the side.
It was a really good movie.

Based on the amount of marine growth on the sides of the boat in the

Do I see a book deal with a movie contract in their future? ... "What

And yes, people are quite stupid. They should have been able to get to Tahiti

There are a number of was to deal wth this:

With two (or more) people you can have watches of maybe two or four hours.

Sleep and let the windvane (autopilot) steer

Lay the boat hove-to so it effectively stops in the water

A lot depends on where you are. Out in the middle of the ocean you could
pretty much do whatever you want. If you’re in or around shipping lanes, you
better have a watch.

Appel and Tasha Fuiaba, both from Honolulu, had set sail for the Polynesian
island of Tahiti in the spring. But their boat's engine died in May after a
bout of inclement weather. They pressed on, hoping to make it to land by sail,
the Navy said. But they soon found themselves lost. Their distress signals went
unanswered for months.

Did they have power for EPIRB but not for GPS?
And no knowledge of nonelectronic navigation?
